Maple Leafs interviewing Mats Sundin for hockey department job

Quick note for a Friday morning: The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for someone new to lead their hockey operations. In addition to that process, the organization is pursuing adding franchise legend in a management role.

Sportsnet has learned that ownership will meet with the Maple Leafs’ all-time leading scorer, Mats Sundin, as soon as Friday about a role in the hockey department. It’s unclear when the process began, but the ex-captain is in Toronto and has met with MLSE president Keith Pelley at least once. An advisory role — or something along those lines — is being discussed.

It’s an excellent idea. Sundin loved representing the blue and white and would bring credibility because he’s extremely popular among the alumni and fanbase. He worked as an analyst for Swedish TV at the recent Winter Olympics and was part of Team Sweden’s management at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

We will see where it goes over the next few days, but there’s mutual interest in this reunion.
