President Trump plans to build a 4,500-seat venue for the widely anticipated Ultimate Fighting Championship cage match at the front of the White House this summer.
“I’ve been involved in a lot of big events,” the president told reporters gathered outside the Oval Office on Monday. “I have never had an event that has had more interest than the UFC fight we have right at the front door.”
“UFC Freedom 250” will commemorate America’s semiquincentennial, falling on Mr. Trump’s 80th birthday on June 14. The longtime fan of the sport made history as the first sitting president to attend a fight in 2019.
He revealed the venue’s construction details for the mixed martial arts fight, complete with a custom-built outdoor octagon.
“Right there,” the president said while gesturing toward the South Lawn, “they’re going to start building a 4,500-seat arena.”
An overflow area will be erected on the Ellipse, a 52-acre park just south of the White House grounds.
“And then in the back at the Ellipse, we’re going to have 100,000, maybe [50,000] to 100,000 people, I guess,” he said. “They’re building tremendous stages, and we’re going to have massive screens of the fight. It’s a very popular sport.”
UFC, led by Trump ally Dana White, announced last month its full card of bouts, with six prime-time fights.
Lightweight fighters Ilia Topuria of Georgia in Eastern Europe and Justin Gaethje of Arizona will be pitted against each other for the night’s main event. Other fights, between Brazilian Alex Pereira and France’s Ciryl Gane, will be featured, including a match between Montana native Sean O’Malley and Canada’s Aiemann Zahabi, who said that he is “eager to spoil the party.”
This past weekend, the president, some of his children and Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat ringside for a UFC event in Miami after negotiations to end the Iran war failed.
