One of the Richmond FC favourites could be on the precipice of turning fiction into reality, as he is reportedly in the running to sign a professional football contract.

Dani Rojas walked into the hearts of Ted Lasso fans with his infectious smile and all-purpose mantra that ‘football is life’.

Now, Mexican actor Cristo Fernández, who plays Dani, might prove the catchphrase in his own life, as he’s said to be in contention for a contract at a football club in El Paso, Texas.

A report has claimed that Fernández played 30 minutes in a pre-season friendly for El Paso Locomotive football club against New Mexico United over the weekend.

The Locomotive side has competed in the USL Championship in the US since 2019, a year after the Texan team was founded.

The club is reportedly expected to make a decision on Fernández’s future there this week, according to US football news outlet Goal.

Before he appeared in all three seasons of the beloved Apple TV series, the Jalisco native found a love of football from a young age.

The 35-year-old played youth football for Tecos FC academy in Jalisco, but sustained a knee injury aged 15 that brought his nascent career on the pitch to an end. He then pursued acting while at the University of Guadalajara.

Fernandez is not alone on the Ted Lasso cast with his past life in the world of football, as Kola Bokinni – who plays captain of the Richmond team Isaac McAdoo – also went semi-pro as an attacker.

It comes as the show is set to make a highly anticipated return with a fourth season this summer, albeit with a slightly different focus for the dramedy.

Once again starring and executive produced by Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso will nowtell the story of the female Greyhounds when it returns to screens this August, according to Hannah Waddingham.

The actress, who plays girlboss and club owner Rebecca Welton, told Deadline on the Baftas red carpet: ‘It’s a whole different deal with our Lady Greyhounds. I can’t wait for everyone to see what they’ve come up with.’

As for the release window? ‘August, I think,’ she told the publication, then realising she might have let the cat out the bag, added: ‘Am I allowed to say August? What if I’m wrong?’

Metro contacted Locomotive FC and Cristo Fernandez’s representative for comment.

Ted Lasso is available to stream on Apple TV, with season 4 returning later this year.

Deadliest Catch star Todd Meadows’ mum begs show not to air son’s death footage

Deadliest Catch ‘newest member’ Todd Meadows has died aged 25 (Picture: GoFundMe)

Todd Meadows mum has begged Deadliest Catch producers not to air her son’s death after he ‘fell overboard’ while filming.

He was only 25 and had been crabbing in Alaska on board the Aleutian Lady when the shocking accident took the newest crew member’s life.

The boat’s captain, Rick Shelford, confirmed the news on Monday, calling it the ‘most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady’.

Cameras were rolling when Meadows fell into the icy cold waters of the Bering Sea, with his body reportedly recovered 10 minutes later and attempts to resuscitate him failed.

His mum, Angela, has now pleaded that the events of February 25, 2026, are not aired for the public to watch in the new season.

She told TMZ: ‘We don’t want to see any footage of the accident and do not want Discovery to air any of that footage or make money off of our son’s death.’

Instead, they’ve asked that footage of him crabbing and doing what he loved is shown, adding: ‘We hope they only air good things of Todd on that boat.’

The family are still waiting for a definitive answer about the circumstances surrounding Meadows’ death.

They have, however, been assured that he did not suffer in his final moments.

She said: ‘We don’t want to put the blame on anyone, but someone has to take responsibility. We will have justice for Todd.’

Meadows’ death was announced by Captain Rick Shelford on Monday, writing on Facebook the crew had ‘lost our brother’.

He continued: ‘Todd was the newest member of our crew, he quickly became family. His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away.

‘His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.’

The United States Coast Guard Arctic District has since shared a statement with People, detailing the shock incident while filming what is thought to be the long-running show’s 22nd season.

The statement noted that theCoast Guard received notification from the Aleutian Lady that ‘a crew member by the name of Todd Meadows fell overboard’.

‘He was recovered unresponsive by the crew approximately ten minutes later. First aid and attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful, and the crew transported the deceased to Dutch Harbor,’ the statement continued.

The Coast Guard also shared that officials are ‘currently investigating this situation’.

Deadliest Catch first aired in 2005 on the Discovery Channel, giving insight into the incredibly harsh conditions that fishermen in the North Atlantic face.

In his tribute, Captain Shelford added: ‘He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him. Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express.

‘Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood. Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him. Rest easy brother, till we meet again.’

A spokesperson for the Discovery Channel also shared a statement, saying they are ‘deeply saddened by the tragic passing’.

‘This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time’.

A GoFundMe has also been launched to support Meadows’ family, which includes his three young sons, with funeral costs and other expenses.

They have been inundated with support, having originally asked for $16,000 (£11.9k) but have now raised over $45,600 (£34k), with the new target at $55,000 (£41k).

Meadows isn’t the only Deadliest Catch loss in recent years as in June 2024, Nick Mavar died suddenly, aged 59.

He had been the longest-running cast member, appearing from 2005 until 2021, when he had to step back due to an appendix-related health scare.

In 2020, deck boss Nick McGlashan died aged 33 and two years before that, Captain Blake Painter was found dead in his home at just 38.

Metro contacted Warner Bros. Discovery for further comment.

24 Hours in Police Custody returns with chilling episodes tonight

The true crime documentary returns tonight with a deeply disturbing two-part special about an investigation that shocked even experienced detectives

The much-loved Channel 4 true crime documentary is poised to make a return to television screens tonight with an episode that promises to be “deeply disturbing”.

24 Hours in Police Custody has garnered a loyal following since its debut in 2014. The groundbreaking documentary immerses viewers in the high-stakes world of criminal investigations, following detectives as they pursue justice for serious crimes.

The programme offers a glimpse into the real-life drama unfolding within a local police force, as detectives race against time to uncover horrifying truths. Over the years, the show has earned the accolade of being the “best ever”, with viewers eagerly anticipating new episodes.

In recent weeks, fans of 24 Hours in Police Custody were disappointed when the show appeared to have been taken off air and replaced with a new series on Channel 4. However, tonight (March 4), two episodes will be broadcast from 9pm, back to back.

Entitled 24 Hours in Police Custody: The Butcher of Suburbia, this two-part instalment delves into the 2024 murder of a 74-year-old woman. Viewers will watch as detectives investigate the killer who dismembered and concealed her body, initially claiming she had moved away, reports Wales Online.

For the first part, set to air at 9pm on Channel 4, the broadcaster teases: “The landmark series brings us the gripping inside story of the murder of a 74-year-old woman – and the killer’s macabre efforts to conceal her death.”

Promising a “deeply disturbing” episode, part two reveals: “The suspect admits to the murder of a 74-year-old woman. But a deeply disturbing tale that shocks experienced detectives has only just begun.”

The two instalments tonight are repeat episodes that previously shocked viewers. Taking to social media, one person said: “Omg that episode of 24 hours in police custody – the butcher of suburbia is HARROWING.”

Another wrote: “Shocking two-part documentary. When a 74-year-old woman is murdered, police uncover the killer’s macabre efforts to hide her death.”

A third added: “Watching the butcher or suburbia episode of 24 hours in police custody. Wow!”. A fourth penned: “Pleased that “24 Hours In Police Custody” returns tonight (C4 9pm). It’s a consistently good series.”

One person commented: “Watched another true life horror. 24 hours in Police Custody: Butcher of Suburbia.”

Another echoed: “#24hoursinpolicecustody is undoubtedly one of the best programs on TV. The Butcher of Suburbia…the chilling calmness, openness, honesty about killing and chopping up a 70-year-old lady. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything quite like it.”

24 Hours in Police Custody returns tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm and 10pm. Episodes are also available to stream online.

Susanna Reid sparks debate if Brits in Dubai ‘should pay for evacuation’

Susanna Reid has questioned the government’s plans to evacuate thousands of Brits from Dubai in the wake of Iran’s strikes across the region.

The Good Morning Britain co-host sparked the debate on the ITV show after it was reported that more than 50,000 British people are believed to be stuck in the United Arab Emirates with its airspace currently closed.

Speaking to co-host Ed Balls, Susanna said: ‘This row blew up on social media and in the Commons about the fact that tens of thousands of Brits have moved to places like Dubai, potentially… to avoid paying tax.

‘And there are questions now about if they need rescuing, if there is a mass evacuation of all those Brits, should they actually pay for their own evacuation.

‘Because if they’re avoiding paying tax then they’re avoiding paying into public services, like the government coming to get you when you’re in trouble.’

Responding to a clip of Susanna on X, viewers were split over whether people ‘who do not contribute to the tax system should not receive any services’.

Disagreeing with Susanna’s questioning, Wendy wrote: ‘Conflating paying taxes with whether your home nation state should rescue you when your chosen country of residence is being attacked by a terrorist state, is unhelpful.

‘Yes we should allow people to be adults and to shoulder the consequences of their choices and actions, but this is a rather more risky and complicated situation.’

@Alnuaimi222 similarly echoed: ‘People living in Dubai still pay fees, indirect taxes, and often contribute to the UK economy more than some who never leave.

‘And by the way… a passport isn’t a Netflix subscription that gets cancelled when you change your address.’

Meanwhile, Peter called it ‘utter nonsense’, arguing: ‘If they return they quickly become British tax residents again and will be liable for worldwide income and assets. It’s a non-story.’

Suzanne, however, wrote: ‘If they are happy to live there and pay no tax because they can pay to evacuate.’

Michael similarly said: ‘Any Brit who goes to live elsewhere is no longer our concern. Effectively they have severed ties with us.’

Stuart also added: ‘The price of a British passport, and the price of protection of the British state should be paying UK taxes.’

Speaking on Sunday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that roughly 200,000 Brits are in the Middle East on holiday or otherwise travelling across the Gulf.

He has urged everyone in areas targeted by Iranian strikes to register with the Foreign Office to receive advice, and so far more than 94,000 have done that, the Guardian reports.

More than 50,000 are said to be in the UAE, with most of them holidaymakers or travellers rather than residents, given Dubai’s pull as a major tourist and business destination.

Brits in Dubai share their experience

But with its airspace closed, tourists have been left without a plan for getting home.

Following the government’s advice for people to follow local instructions, the government is said to be looking at all options including evacuations via different routes if the airspace remains closed and tension escalate.

People could alternatively be evacuated to neighbouring countries where the airspace remains open, such as Saudi Arabia.

Good Morning Britain is available to watch on weekdays on ITV1.

Hollywood stars break down as ‘genius’ Catherine O’Hara wins posthumous award

Catherine O’Hara was posthumously awarded an Actor Award on Sunday for her performance in The Studio.

The Schitt’s Creek star died in January at the age of 71 following a brief illness, having made her final public appearance at the 2025 Emmy Awards in September.

The star and creator of The Studio Seth Rogen went on stage to accept the best actress in a comedy award on O’Hara’s behalf, in front of a visibly emotional Hollywood crowd.

On the Apple TV show, O’Hara played studio exec turned producer powerhouse Patty Leigh, in a role that strove for film quality before commercial success, in the face of Rogen’s character Matt Remick’s swerve towards the former.

Rogen had prepared a speech to accept O’Hara’s posthumous award and was audibly moved as he told the audience: ‘I was asked to assume the very sad honour of accepting this award on O’Hara’s behalf.’

The 43-year-old said he knew O’Hara would have been ‘honoured’ to have been in the same category as stars Jenna Ortega, Jean Smart, Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Wiig at the Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

‘She was such big fans of all of yours,’ he said, before sharing his recent reflections on working with O’Hara on The Studio.

‘Something I’ve just been marvelling at over the last few weeks was really her ability to be generous and kind and gracious while never ever minimising her own talents, and her own ability to contribute to the work that we were doing,’ he said.

The camera moved to O’Hara’s fellow nominee and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-star Ortega at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in LA, as she wiped away tears.

‘She knew she could destroy and she wanted to destroy every day on set,’ Rogen continued.

‘I haven’t said this to the other actors, because I haven’t wanted them to get ideas, but pretty much every evening before she had a shooting day on our show, she would email me and [co-creator Evan Goldberg] an email that always was pretty similar, that said, “Hello, I hope you’ll consider the following”, and then there would be a completely rewritten version of the scene that she was in.’

Saturday Night Live alum Wiig laughed in the gathered crowd as Rogen went on to say that O’Hara’s notes would make a scene better ‘100 percent of the time’.

He continued: ‘She really showed that you can be a genius and be kind, and one of those things does not have to come at the expense of the other in any way, shape or form.

‘If you have people in your lives who don’t know her work – if you have kids in your lives or people that are out of touch or stupid or something – just show them O’Hara dancing to Harry Belafonte in Beetlejuice.

‘Show them O’Hara hurting her knee in Best in Show and doing that amazing thing where she hobbles around. And tell the people as they’re laughing that that’s Catherine O’Hara, and we’re lucky that we got to live in a world where she so genuinely got to share her talents with us.’

The Studio is available to stream on Apple TV.

An Iranian state television anchor broke down in tears as he announced the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following coordinated US and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.

Reading from an official statement issued by the National Supreme Council, the presenter said: ‘God is great. God is great.

‘With deep sorrow, it is announced to the nation of Iran that Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, was martyred today in a joint criminal attack by the United States and the Zionist regime.’

As he continued, his voice began to falter.

The statement described Ayatollah, 86, as a revered Islamic figure whose ‘long dream of martyrdom became true’. It also noted that he had been killed during the holy month of Ramadan.

Partway through the broadcast, the anchor became visibly emotional, covering his mouth with his hand and lowering his head as he tried to compose himself.

Others could be heard crying off camera. He resumed reading but broke down again before finishing the announcement.

It is unknown if his tears were in mourning, fear for continued strikes on the country, relief at the end of the authoritarian regime, or some mixture of the three.

Iranian state media confirmed early Sunday that Khamenei had been killed in airstrikes targeting his compound in Tehran.

According to semi-official Tasnim news agency, he died in his office at home during the attack. Satellite images showed smoke rising from the site, and officials said his body was found under the rubble.

Four members of his family and two senior military commanders were also reported killed in the strikes.

His wife, Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, and several of his children and grandchildren were believed to have been at the compound.

He and his wife had six children: sons Massoud, Mojtaba, Mostafa and Meysam, and daughters Bushra and Hoda.

The government announced a 40-day mourning period and declared a seven-day national holiday. The statement read on air said that while Iranians were mourning, ‘martyrdom will spark a massive uprising in the fight against oppressors.’

US President Donald Trump had announced Khamenei’s death hours earlier in a post on Truth Social, calling him ‘one of the most evil people in History’.

Trump urged the people of Iran to ‘rise up’, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging them ‘to flood the streets and finish the job’.

Iranian officials initially dismissed reports of Khamenei’s death as psychological warfare, but later confirmed it as further strikes were reported across the country.

Crowds gathered overnight in parts of Tehran and other cities, with some mourning and others celebrating.

Khamenei had served as Iran’s supreme leader for nearly four decades and was a central figure in the country’s political and religious establishment.

His death marks a significant moment for the Islamic Republic as the conflict with the United States and Israel continues.

Line of Duty star Martin Compston has revealed that he’s begun dieting ahead of his return to the hit BBC crime drama.

Martin, 41, plays Anti-Corruption Unit Detective Inspector Steve Arnott – best known for his choice of tight-fitting waistcoats on the show.

After years of speculation, it was recently announced that Line of Duty would be returning for a seventh series with all principal members of the cast.

Martin will reprise his role alongside Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar as AC-12’s top cops, with filming set to begin this Spring.

The actor has already begun preparing for the new series by undergoing a strict diet, under the supervision of his wife, Tianna Chanel Flynn.

This involves cutting out all sugar, and sticking to a strict menu of organic food.

Speaking to The Times newspaper, Martin said: ‘I’m filming series seven of Line of Duty in the Spring, and before I start a new project I do this thing called the Whole30 organic diet, orchestrated by my wife, who, unlike me, is a phenomenal cook, where you totally cut out sugar.’

Martin and actress Tiana have been married for ten years, after meeting at a bar in a Los Angeles hotel, and now share one son together.

Describing his new diet, he continued: ‘Yesterday she made chicken wings, asparagus, cabbage and a miso sauce for lunch, which all helps me fit nicely into my Steve Arnott waistcoat.’

Martin didn’t share whether or not she’s cooking these meals with gas.

The core AC-12 team will be joined by series newcomer Robert Carlyle as its guest lead, Detective Constable Shaun Massie.

The Trainspotting and Once Upon a Time star will follow in the footsteps of previous guest stars Lennie James, Keeley Hawes and Daniel Mays, all of whom played corrupt coppers investigated by the gang.

On joining the series, Robert said: ‘The scripts for the series are excellent and will absolutely maintain the quality that the audience have come to expect from this fantastic show.’

‘DC Massie is an extraordinary character and I look forward to bringing him to life,’ he added.

The BBC has shared a few details of what to expect from the plot of season seven, which begins with AC-12 disbanded and rebranded.

Now designated the Inspectorate of Police Standards, the team come together when the commanding officer of a Tactical Operations Unit is accused of being a sexual predator.

How this ties in to the divisive ending to series six remains to be seen, but we’d wager that there’s more to the tale than meets the eye.

Indeed, a TV insider has suggested that the show will revisit its biggest dangling thread when it does return – the identity of enigmatic crime boss ‘H.’

H was revealed to be bumbling Ian Buckells at the end of season six, although many fans weren’t thrilled about how the mystery was resolved.

An insider told The Sun: ‘There was genuine anger about the way series six ended and that was part of the reason that a seventh outing was ordered.

‘But this is the first time that there’s been any news on whether they’ll bring back the “H” storyline – and devotees will be thrilled to hear Jed will be giving them just what they want.’

The source said there was ‘still likely to be a new villain introduced into the new season’, just as with every series since the show was launched.

‘But the incoming baddie’s storyline is likely to be intertwined with that of H in a sensational double-whammy,’ the added.

While season seven is believed to begin filming in Spring 2026, its release date has yet to be confirmed.

What we do know is that the show will return to BBC iPlayer and BBC One at some point next year.

Line of Duty is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.

“When she became unwell, our security team assisted her and escorted her safely out of the venue,” the statement continued. “We pulled and reviewed all available surveillance footage from the time in question and interviewed staff on duty.”

The bar claimed they found “no evidence” of drink tampering or suspicious behavior toward her.

“We cannot speak to medical findings and do not want to speculate about toxicology results,” the statement said. “We take any report of a guest feeling unwell or unsafe extremely seriously and follow established investigative protocols.

The venue expressed they are aware of the severity of drink tampering, calling it a “crime.”

“If any guest believes their drink has been compromised, we strongly encourage them to report it immediately, either to our management team so we can respond in real time, or directly to law enforcement if they prefer,” they wrote.

“The Abbey has extensive surveillance coverage, trained security personnel, and ongoing drink-safety measures in place,” the statement concluded. “Guest safety remains our highest priority.”
