Margo’s Got Money Troubles has a one-line attention-grabbing premise: a young student who gets pregnant after an affair with her married college professor turns to OnlyFans.

Based on a book of the same name by Rufi Thorpe, the new Apple TV eight-parter stars recently minted Oscar nominee Elle Fanning as the titular Margo Millet, a first-year student.

She’s not only got money troubles, but parental ones, with her ex Hooters waitress mum Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer) in her ear and her ex pro wrestler dad Jinx (Nick Offerman) drifting in and out of her life.

Margo’s life takes a turn when her slimy English teacher starts writing her poems (oh dear) and suggests she could cut it at Harvard, as part of a twisted ploy to get her into bed.

Alas, it works and Margo ends up pregnant. (It has been pointed out she doesn’t really explore the possibility of abortion, but that would have somewhat curtailed the TV show, given what comes next.)

Because this teacher is an outright wrong-un, Margo ends up having to go it alone as a parent, much like her mother did after a one-night stand with her father, a then-Hooters punter who was also, it turned out, married.

Driven by the hardscrabble need to make a living for herself and her child, Margo joins the explicit content platform OnlyFans, where she strikes upon a niche but cash-flowing community of sex-forward sci-fi fans.

Adapted by the creator of Big Little Lies, David E Kelley, the star of that show moonlights in this one. Nicole Kidman here plays a former pro wrestler (you go, girl!) turned lawyer, who represents Margo.

The show, which premieres its first three episodes today, has already scored a towering 96 per cent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

What other shows can you stream now?

  • The Capture. The third season of the BBC thriller just wrapped up.
  • Euphoria. Catch up on the show that everyone is talking about, for better or worse.
  • If It’s Tuesday, It’s Murder. Fancy a quirky murder mystery with a dollop of escapism? This one is for you.
  • Big Mistakes. A new cringe comedy from Dan Levy, the creator of Schitt’s Creek. Catch it on the Netflix top 10.
  • Beef. A bonus one, out tomorrow. Read about the new cast of characters here.

The reviews for Margo’s Got Money Troubles have been overwhelmingly positive, with Bloomberg praising the show for a ‘relatable’ depiction of a woman engaged in sex work, rather than othering her.

Elsewhere, a write-up in Roger Ebert went so far as to bill the show ‘one of the most engaging and entertaining series of the year to date’, describing it as ‘wickedly funny’.

A review in Esquire praised Fanning in particular, deeming it ‘some of the best work of her career’, but the Guardian noted that more could have been done story-wise with the stellar cast assembled.

Does Margo’s Got Money Troubles sound like one for you?

The first three episodes of Margo’s Got Money Troubles launch on Apple TV on April 15.

Hidden gem sci-fi series hailed ‘one of the best ever’ drops brand new season

Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if the Soviet Union had won the space race?

That’s the counterfactual that For All Mankind first used as a launchpad to present an entire TV show of alternate history.

Now in its fifth season, the Apple TV sci-fi show’s new 20th-century timeline has resulted in a human colony on Mars.

The show’s view of human life up at the Happy Valley outpost (no, nothing to do with the BBC show) has simmered over the seasons into an earnest, occasionally heartbreaking, portrait.

As we return to For All Mankind in the latest premiere episode of season five, viewers are treated to the show’s customary recap of the revisionist world events in the time since we last saw the cast.

We’re talking a series of headlines like, ‘John Lennon and Jay-Z perform at the Grammys, where their Grey Album wins Album of the Year’. What a world.

But things for the NASA astronauts up on Happy Valley with their families are less rosy, with the leaders of Earth threatening to withhold all help from Mars unless the outpost’s loyalty is established.

It raises an existential question for those on the Red Planet, who at this point have been there for some time: where do they really belong?

The series from Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi has become a beloved fixture of the TV schedule, with fans often praising it as the most slept-on show on the air at the moment.

The thrilling ‘what if’ currently holds a near-perfect score of 92% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as well as 8.1 out of 10 on IMDb.

What other shows can you watch this weekend?

  • Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen. Technically, more than one bad thing happens to engaged couple Nicky and Rachel.
  • Babies. The six-part BBC drama follows a married couple in their thirties, desperate to start a family.
  • Bait. Riz Ahmed plays fictional British Pakistani Muslim actor Shah Latif, who auditions for the man of the hour, James Bond.

‘You’ll be hooked’ (Picture: Apple TV)

There, one fan described For All Mankind as one of their favourite sci-fi shows ever, adding: ‘That’s not hyperbole.’

‘It may start off a little slow for some but after a few episodes you’ll be hooked.’

The consensus is that the show is far better than you would expect, particularly given how little fanfare it has received more broadly from TV viewers.

‘If you’re a sci-fi fan and have been putting it off like me…stop! Go watch this as soon as possible because I promise you won’t be disappointed,’ wrote another viewer.

Will you give For All Mankind a try?

For All Mankind season 5 launches on Apple TV from March 27.

Fan-favourite Ted Lasso star could sign real pro contract

One of the Richmond FC favourites could be on the precipice of turning fiction into reality, as he is reportedly in the running to sign a professional football contract.

Dani Rojas walked into the hearts of Ted Lasso fans with his infectious smile and all-purpose mantra that ‘football is life’.

Now, Mexican actor Cristo Fernández, who plays Dani, might prove the catchphrase in his own life, as he’s said to be in contention for a contract at a football club in El Paso, Texas.

A report has claimed that Fernández played 30 minutes in a pre-season friendly for El Paso Locomotive football club against New Mexico United over the weekend.

The Locomotive side has competed in the USL Championship in the US since 2019, a year after the Texan team was founded.

The club is reportedly expected to make a decision on Fernández’s future there this week, according to US football news outlet Goal.

Before he appeared in all three seasons of the beloved Apple TV series, the Jalisco native found a love of football from a young age.

The 35-year-old played youth football for Tecos FC academy in Jalisco, but sustained a knee injury aged 15 that brought his nascent career on the pitch to an end. He then pursued acting while at the University of Guadalajara.

Fernandez is not alone on the Ted Lasso cast with his past life in the world of football, as Kola Bokinni – who plays captain of the Richmond team Isaac McAdoo – also went semi-pro as an attacker.

It comes as the show is set to make a highly anticipated return with a fourth season this summer, albeit with a slightly different focus for the dramedy.

Once again starring and executive produced by Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso will nowtell the story of the female Greyhounds when it returns to screens this August, according to Hannah Waddingham.

The actress, who plays girlboss and club owner Rebecca Welton, told Deadline on the Baftas red carpet: ‘It’s a whole different deal with our Lady Greyhounds. I can’t wait for everyone to see what they’ve come up with.’

As for the release window? ‘August, I think,’ she told the publication, then realising she might have let the cat out the bag, added: ‘Am I allowed to say August? What if I’m wrong?’

Metro contacted Locomotive FC and Cristo Fernandez’s representative for comment.

Ted Lasso is available to stream on Apple TV, with season 4 returning later this year.

Hollywood stars break down as ‘genius’ Catherine O’Hara wins posthumous award

Catherine O’Hara was posthumously awarded an Actor Award on Sunday for her performance in The Studio.

The Schitt’s Creek star died in January at the age of 71 following a brief illness, having made her final public appearance at the 2025 Emmy Awards in September.

The star and creator of The Studio Seth Rogen went on stage to accept the best actress in a comedy award on O’Hara’s behalf, in front of a visibly emotional Hollywood crowd.

On the Apple TV show, O’Hara played studio exec turned producer powerhouse Patty Leigh, in a role that strove for film quality before commercial success, in the face of Rogen’s character Matt Remick’s swerve towards the former.

Rogen had prepared a speech to accept O’Hara’s posthumous award and was audibly moved as he told the audience: ‘I was asked to assume the very sad honour of accepting this award on O’Hara’s behalf.’

The 43-year-old said he knew O’Hara would have been ‘honoured’ to have been in the same category as stars Jenna Ortega, Jean Smart, Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Wiig at the Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

‘She was such big fans of all of yours,’ he said, before sharing his recent reflections on working with O’Hara on The Studio.

‘Something I’ve just been marvelling at over the last few weeks was really her ability to be generous and kind and gracious while never ever minimising her own talents, and her own ability to contribute to the work that we were doing,’ he said.

The camera moved to O’Hara’s fellow nominee and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-star Ortega at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in LA, as she wiped away tears.

‘She knew she could destroy and she wanted to destroy every day on set,’ Rogen continued.

‘I haven’t said this to the other actors, because I haven’t wanted them to get ideas, but pretty much every evening before she had a shooting day on our show, she would email me and [co-creator Evan Goldberg] an email that always was pretty similar, that said, “Hello, I hope you’ll consider the following”, and then there would be a completely rewritten version of the scene that she was in.’

Saturday Night Live alum Wiig laughed in the gathered crowd as Rogen went on to say that O’Hara’s notes would make a scene better ‘100 percent of the time’.

He continued: ‘She really showed that you can be a genius and be kind, and one of those things does not have to come at the expense of the other in any way, shape or form.

‘If you have people in your lives who don’t know her work – if you have kids in your lives or people that are out of touch or stupid or something – just show them O’Hara dancing to Harry Belafonte in Beetlejuice.

‘Show them O’Hara hurting her knee in Best in Show and doing that amazing thing where she hobbles around. And tell the people as they’re laughing that that’s Catherine O’Hara, and we’re lucky that we got to live in a world where she so genuinely got to share her talents with us.’

The Studio is available to stream on Apple TV.
