Spring is looming, and that means that it’s nearly time to make the exciting (or dreaded, depending on how you view it) wardrobe swap around from chunky boots, heavy knitwear and long coats are tucked away until later in the year. Along with this comes the time of investing in key season staples, such as new shoe trends with the likes of minimalist basics, laidback loafers, and statement stilettos taking over the high street.

It should be a joyful add-to-basket moment. And yet, for those of us with wider feet, it can feel more like an endurance sport. Because while the trends are trending, not every brand gets the memo when it comes to fit. Straps dig in, pointed toes pinch, and by midday, you’re already plotting your escape route home. Blisters? Inevitable. That sinking realisation that they “might stretch”? Rarely accurate.

The good news? More brands are finally delivering fashion-forward options that actually allow your feet to breathe, whilst looking and feeling their best. From polished workwear staples to trend-led heels and everyday flats, there are wide-fit alternatives out there that look just as good as their narrower counterparts.

New Look has been offering wide-fit shoes for a while now, and their collection keeps on growing as they introduce more trend-led options for shoppers to enjoy. From crossover sandals, slingback pumps, and comfy loafers, they are ticking all of the boxes.

Our personal favourites have to be the Wide Fit Dark Burgundy Faux Patent Leather Pointed Toe Ankle Strap Pumps, which retail for £29.99. Not only does it tick multiple trends thanks to the faux patent leather fabric and the burgundy tone, but the pointed toe is a key shape for the new season. The point might make you weary, but they have been made specifically wide so your feet won’t suffer.

Marks & Spencer

Black wedge heels
M&S Ankle Strap Wedge Sandals, £46(Picture: Metro/Marks and Spencer/Metro)

M&S provide multiple versions of their standard designs in wide fit, so you don’t have to miss out on key styles from their main collection. They say that the perfect spring/ summer sandal doesn’t exist, but the M&S Ankle Strap Wedge Sandals, £46, will give you a run for your money. Available in both standard and wide fit, these espadrille-style wedges have a buckle fastening on the slim ankle strap to maximise comfort, whilst the signature cord heels make for a truly versatile and classic design to pair with countless outfits.

ASOS

Green shoes with bow
ASOS DESIGN Wide Fit Bow Slingback Shoes, £32. (Picture: Metro/ASOS)

ASOS provides a broad range of styles in the wide fit section of their website, including biker boots and studded ballet pumps. However, statement heels are big for the new season, and these ASOS DESIGN Wide Fit bow slingback shoes in sage green velvet, £32, are ones on our wish list. Wear them with a slip skirt and shirt for an office-to-dinner look, a pair of jeans for a smart/ casual vibe, or they make the perfect finishing touch to a wedding guest outfit. They also come available in a natural linen option that is just as stunning.

River Island

Chunky gold heels
River Island Gold Wide Fit Open Toe Heeled Sandals, £32. (Picture: Metro/River Island)

Whilst River Island doesn’t have a great deal of options, they are another high street retailer to keep an eye on for their wide fit range, as they are adding more and more as the season goes on.

One of our favourites, which is a must in every wardrobe, is a go-to pair of gold heels that you can always rely on to have your back (and your feet) when in need of reliable and versatile footwear. These Gold Wide Fit Open Toe Heeled Sandals, £32, are style staples that come with chunky heels that help distribute your weight, providing better balance and comfort.

Next

Black loafers
Next Black Patent Standard/Wide Fit Chunky Loafers, £36. (Picture: Metro/Next)

Next is one of the high street retailers that has a vast amount of wide-fitting designs and styles available to shop. Whether you’re after daytime essentials, need a signature pair of courts, or want to invest in some knee-high boots, you can shop to your heart’s desire to snap up the best they have to offer.

We love their Black Patent Standard/Wide Fit Chunky Loafers, which retail for just £36. Loafers are known to pinch and squash your feet, so opting for a wide fit will help alleviate some of that. This stylish pair has been given an updated look to pair perfectly with formal or casual outfits. The faux leather allows for slight stretch, so as you wear it will relax slightly. They are also fitted with the brand’s Forever Comfort® cushioned footbed, providing all-day comfort.

Sole Bliss

White trainers with stripe
Sole Bliss Hero Stripe, £189. (Picture: Metro/Sole Bliss)

One brand to have on your radar if you suffer from bunions, as well as finding options for wide feet, is Sole Bliss. Loved by celebrities such as Dame Helen Mirren, Julia Roberts, and Shirley Ballas, they’ve even had the royal seal of approval from Queen Camilla and Prince Harry.

Whilst all of their shoes are specially designed with a wide toe box to accommodate wider feet, and have three layers of memory foam for extra cushioning, there are countless options available.

Their Hero-Stripe: White Leather & Multi Pastel trainers, £189, are a brilliant addition to your spring shoe collection, thanks to their pastel stripes along the side that subtly nod to the season. They would look great with a pair of light denim, a Breton stripe tee, and a bomber jacket.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey? This is the latest UK Foreign Office advice

Is it safe to travel to Turkey? This is the latest UK Foreign Office advice
Some 63.4 million international tourists visited Turkey last year (Picture: Getty Images)

While tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, it remains business as usual in Turkey’s main tourist hubs.

With historic cities and spectacular coastlines, the West Asian country remains one of the most popular holiday destinations for European travellers.

In 2025, it welcomed 63.4 million visitors, with Russia, Germany and the UK the top markets for inbound travel.

But as geopolitical tensions flare across the region, and given Turkey’s eastern land border with Iran, some may be reconsidering trips to the country during the busy Easter and summer seasons.

If you’re still weighing up plans, here’s everything you should know.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey? Latest FCDO advice

The Foreign Office continues to advise against ‘all travel to parts of Turkey’. This specifically refers to travel within 10km of the border between Turkey and Syria, in light of the terrorism risk.

As is stands, there is no travel warning for popular holiday destinations such as Istanbul, Cappadocia and Antalya.

For other parts of the country, the Foreign Office last updated its travel guidance on March 1, when it changed its advice on entering across the land border from Iran.

This means British nationals are required to request support from the British Embassy in Ankara before travelling to the border.

The guidance continued: ‘If you intend to leave Iran overland, you do so at your own risk.

‘In Iran, holding a British passport or having perceived connections to the UK can be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to detain you.’

Have flights to Turkey been cancelled?

Flights from European cities to major Turkish airports, including Istanbul’s two main commercial airports and Antalya Airport, continue to operate on schedule.

Flag carrier Turkish Airlines has only cancelled services to select locations across the Middle East and the Gulf.

British Airways, AJet, and Pegasus all run daily routes from London to Istanbul.

British Airways said it is closely monitoring the situation, and that it’s cancelled a ‘number’ of flights to the Middle East.

‘Safety is always our top priority and we would never operate a flight unless it was safe to do so,’ the guidance, posted on the BA website, reads.

BA gave passengers flying between Heathrow and Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai and Tel Aviv before March 15 the option to change their flight, free of charge, until March 29.

How close is Turkey to Iran?

Turkey and Iran are connected by land, and Tehran and Istanbul are between 2,000 and 2,050 kilometres away from one another by air.

The border between the two countries stretches for around 300 miles.

According to Alaraybiya English, day-trip crossings at the border between Turkey and Iran have been halted at all three customs gates.

However, Turkey’s trade minister, Omer Bolat, said Iran is allowing its own citizens to enter Iran via Turkey, and Turkey is allowing its own citizens to come back to Turkey from Iran.

The Turkish Riviera is home to iconc resorts such as Bodrum and Antalya (Picture: Getty Images)

Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city and its major tourism gateway, lies in the northwest of the country, thousands of kilometres from areas currently experiencing tensions.

The Turkish Riviera – which includes well-known holiday resorts such as Antalya, Bodrum and Marmaris – is located along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts in the southwest.

What if I don’t want to travel to Turkey?

If you already have a holiday booked to Turkey and you choose not to travel, you won’t be eligible for a refund, because the Foreign Office has not explicitly advised against travelling there.

However, you should keep an eye on the Foreign Office guidance to monitor the situation.

If they do advise against travel, contact your tour operator, travel insurance provider or airline, who will be able to provide further assistance.

The Oscars are celebrating the best films of 2025 with the glitzy ceremony taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Conan O’Brien, 62, is returning to host the show for a second consecutive year after taking over the role from Jimmy Kimmel.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners leads the pack with a record-breaking 16 nominations, the most for any film in Academy Awards history.

The horror flick is one of the ten films up for Best Picture alongside Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and Train Dreams.

Sinners star Michael B. Jordan faces a stacked Best Actor category, competing against fellow nominees Timothee Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).

Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie, netted nine Oscar nods, with leading man Timothee Chalamet up for Best Actor and the movie nominated for Best Picture

Set in 1930s Mississippi, Sinners follows twin brothers (both played by Jordan) who return to their hometown only to face a supernatural evil.

The Best Actor race is currently a dead heat. While Chalamet dominated the early season with wins at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, the momentum shifted after Jordan won at the Actor Awards, formerly known as the SAG Awards.

Adding to the tension, the ceremony arrives on the heels of Chalamet’s controversial comments about how ‘no one cares’ about ballet or opera, which sparked a wave of backlash from the arts community.

Based on the life of professional ping-pong player Marty Reisman, Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme stars Chalamet as a table tennis prodigy in 1950s New York whose ambition to become world champion jeopardizes his personal relationships.

Irish star Jessie Buckley is the frontrunner in the Best Actress category for her work in Hamnet. She faces a star-studded field including Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I would Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).

Helmed by 2021’s Best Director winner Chloe Zhao, Hamnet dives into the reimagined story of William Shakespeare’s home life and how the death of his 11-year-old son provided the emotional blueprint for his masterpiece, Hamlet.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another earned 13 nominations.

Along with a Best Director nod, the film also nabbed a Best Actor mention for DiCaprio, and Supporting Actor nods for Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn.

The black comedy action-thriller follows a washed-up ex-revolutionary (DiCaprio) who is forced to come out from hiding to rescue his daughter, after she is targeted by his former nemesis, a corrupt military officer (Penn).

Irish star Jessie Buckley is the frontrunner in the Best Actress category for her work in Chloe Zhao's Hamnet, which is also up for Best Picture

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein secured nine nominations. Leading the film’s acting honors is Jacob Elordi, who earned a Best Supporting Actor nod for his portrayal of the Creature

Aside from Penn and del Toro, the Best Supporting Actor category includes Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Delroy Lindo (Sinners) and Stellan Skarsgard (Sentimental Value).

Paul Mescal (Hamnet), Adam Sandler (Jay Kelly), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) were the most notable snubs from the category.

Frankenstein and Sentimental Value both earned nine nominations at this year’s ceremony.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is a lavish reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic, focusing on a heart-wrenching tale of a father’s rejection and a creature’s quest for love.

Meanwhile, Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value follows two sisters forced to reconcile with their estranged filmmaker father.

Nominees for Best Supporting Actress include Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value), Amy Madigan (Weapons), Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) and Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another).

There was a massive backlash after Ariana Grande was snubbed in the Supporting category for Wicked: For Good.

She had been nominated last year for her work in the first film of the musical franchise.

Wicked: For Good was completely shut out of nominations. This came despite an acclaimed leading performance by Cynthia Erivo, as well as new songs written for the film, including No Place Like Home and The Girl In The Bubble.

Gwyneth Paltrow was also left off the list in the category for her work in Marty Supreme.

There was a new award announced this year for Best Casting as the inaugural field includes: Nina Gold – Hamnet, Jennifer Venditti – Marty Supreme, Cassandra Kulukundis – One Battle After Another, Gabriel Domingues – The Secret Agent, and Francine Maisler – Sinners.

The ceremony kicks off at 7pm ET/ 4pm PT, airing live on ABC and streaming live on Hulu. It will also be streaming via Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV and FuboTV.

Here’s to the mum groups that keep us sane this Mother’s day

Here’s to the mum groups that keep us sane this Mother’s day
Alicia Drabble-Castellano pictured with her mum friends (Picture: Supplied)

At 35 weeks pregnant, Sophie Baldwin is excitedly looking forward to the arrival of her third baby.

And one thing she knows she can count on in the delightful, all-consuming chaos which accompanies a newborn, is the support of her ‘mum group’.

Modern mum groups have come under fire in recent months, with singer and actress Ashley Tisdale writing a viral essay ‘breaking up’ with hers, sparking countless articles, TikToks and Reels about these sometimes ‘toxic’ settings.

But Sophie thinks mum groups are well worth celebrating this Mother’s Day.

Sophie is 35 weeks pregnant with her third child (Picture: Supplied)

She counts two members of her original NCT group from 2021, Hannah and Amy, among her closest friends, and says she’d be lost without best friend Charlotte, who she also met through her daughter.

Mum to Luca, four, and Amelie, two, Sophie, 33, from Harrogate, tells Metro: ‘Knowing I have these friends is invaluable. Before becoming a parent one doesn’t realise how much you lean on a network which is going through similar things at the same time.

‘This time, I have a support network from day dot which is brilliant.’

The NCT supports 250,000 parents each year in the UK and Channel Islands and whilst not all parents will join the prenatal classes, or get along with their groups, for some it’s invaluable.

Sophie was drawn to Hannah, 39, and Amy, 40, by their similarly dark sense of humour. She met best friend Charlotte when she came to model for Sophie’s maternity and breastfeeding clothing line, with her own nine-week-old baby.

Sophie says: ‘I thought I would get to the school gates before I found a group of people who I really gelled with. Instead I have friends I can lean on, whenever I need.

While her friends are always on hand for emergency childcare, one moment sticks in her mind.

‘Charlotte and her partner came over to ours not long after our second was born and cooked us dinner and did bath and bedtime for our eldest, so that we could just relax,’ she remembers.

‘Moments like that are invaluable and often ones you don’t want to ask for, but when you have the right people around you, you don’t have to ask, they’re just done out of love.’

When Ashley Tisdale put her former mum friends on blast, she described feeling excluded by a group which was no longer ‘healthy and positive’ for her. Sophie she doesn’t think mum groups deserve such a bad rap, though.

‘Mum groups, in my experience, have been as far away from toxic as they possibly could be,’ she says.

‘I’ve had nothing but support, kindness, unconditional love, and plenty of chocolate and wine out of them!’

Sometimes, it can take a little longer to find friendship and support though. Recently, the NCT found 62% of new parents feel lonely or isolated at least some of the time.

This was the case for Elaine Gregersen, 45, of Newcastle on Tyne. In 2019 she and her husband Mark, 45, an IT Asset and Contracts manager, were expecting identical twin boys, but the pregnancy was complicated.

She says: ‘I tried to meet people through pregnancy yoga but with my sickness it was too difficult. We weren’t part of NCT but we were meant to be going to London to have a special class on twins further into my pregnancy. However, at 24 weeks my waters broke.’

Her twins, Henry and Blake, arrived in May 2019, four months early, and critically ill. Sadly, older twin Henry, lived only one week.

Elaine says: ‘I was a twin mum and then I was a mum who only had one baby and was grieving, and doctors didn’t expect Blake to live. He was very unwell.’

Miraculously, despite being ‘at death’s door’ numerous times, Blake survived. ‘It was a lonely time,’ Elaine says. ‘I left Whatsapp groups. I had two amazing friends who checked in on me, but I withdrew from everyone.’

Elaine Gregersen pictured with newborn Blake (Picture: Supplied)

In September 2019, after 123 days in hospital, her son was allowed home. Soon it became apparent he wasn’t reaching milestones such as sitting, crawling, or making eye contact and in time he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, amongst other disabilities and life-limiting conditions.

Elaine says: ‘I didn’t know anyone with a child like mine. Holidays were difficult because we couldn’t go to spaces other children went too.

‘Wheeling Blake in his wheelchair into a park can be quite intimidating because I wouldn’t know if there was anything accessible for him. Although my friends were amazing, I didn’t have the group I thought I’d have.’

Elaine Gregersen with her son, Blake (Picture: Supplied)

Then in summer 2024, Elaine came across an advert for group Little SENDsations.

She says: ‘The group was for disabled children and their parents, carers or grandparents.

‘I didn’t know what made me do it, because I’m not necessarily brave, but I decided we would go to a meet up. I needed it and I thought even if it was awful, then I’d given it a go.’

When she arrived, she immediately felt accepted.

Elaine says: ‘One of the organisers walked up and started talking to Blake like a typical child, even though she knew it was unlikely he’d reply.

‘The day was incredible. All the other children were wheelchair-based as well and I started asking questions about their chairs and swapping stories of the difficulties we had all faced with the SEND system or the local authority.

‘We fitted in and I didn’t have to do any explaining.’

Through the group, Blake and Elaine have tried swimming, been on speed boats and enjoyed dolphin-watching. And now Blake, six, commando crawls up to friends made through the organisation.

Elaine says: ‘He knows everyone and it’s life-changing. I know that if I’m having a difficult day or something, good or bad, happens, then I can send a message to the group or ring someone, who will listen and understand.

‘Although each child is different, we understand what it’s like to be caring for a child with very complex needs.

‘Meeting that group changed my life. My sanity has been saved so many times by knowing they are there.

‘I’m never alone now. They are a group of superheroes that I know I can call on, and they are my mates.’

While some groups may drift apart once their child is a little older, for others, the friends made in the first days of parenthood last for life.

Business founder Alicia Drabble-Castellano, 49, from Wimbledon Park, London, gave birth to her daughter Mia nearly 17 years ago. She and her NCT group still regularly meet up, have gone on holidays together and are life-long friends.

Here’s to the mum groups that keep us sane this Mother’s day
Alicia Drabble-Castellano pictured with her mum friends (Picture: Supplied)

Alicia says: ‘I got pregnant in 2008, one of the first in our friendship group to have babies.

‘Because I was an EYFS teacher, I naively imagined I would have it sorted. I loved kids and was a perfectionist, so I put a lot of pressure on myself.’

The couple joined an NCT class where Alicia hoped to learn about pregnancy and childbirth.

She says: ‘I didn’t go in thinking these were going to be my friends but we all gelled straight away, especially when one friend, Felicity, commented to the teacher that she was being misleading by implying a birth with medical intervention was a failure.

‘I didn’t think about it at the time, but when I was in a difficult, 56-hour labour, I remembered that comment and was glad she had said it.’

Alicia Drabble-Castellano with baby Mia (Picture: Supplied)

After the traumatic birth, Alicia found herself feeling ‘fragile and vulnerable’.

She says: ‘Every Wednesday lunchtime the NCT group would meet up. I went and was so shellshocked, these amazing women who I had only known for a few weeks just held Mia and looked after us both.

‘I felt there was a lot of pressure to look a certain way, with make-up done and swishy hair, and I was so far from that, but the girls just hugged me and I realised I didn’t need to put on a show.’

Alicia Drabble-Castellano pictured with her son, daughter and husband (Picture: Supplied)

Practically, having a handful of friends going through the same thing was useful for 3am messages asking why sleeping patterns had changed or whether a dirty nappy was a normal colour.

The group supported Alicia through her decision to leave teaching and set up clothing brand Single Swan in 2020, and she describes them as her ‘emergency contacts, both practically and emotionally’.

Together they’ve been through highs and lows, including school choices, annual trips to Christmas grottoes and group holidays.

And now, nearly two decades on, they still meet up.

She says: ‘We have been really lucky, lots of people lose contact with their group after a couple of years.

‘We just clicked, it was the rawness of letting down our guard and admitting to finding things tough to each other.

‘My friends demonstrate acceptance, unconditional love and sisterhood. They have seen me at my most vulnerable and held me close. They are very special people.’

New café offers taste of Quebec independence | Globalnews.ca

MONTREAL – When you walk into the Club Pays coffee shop in Montreal, the first thing you see are the posters with Quebec sovereignty slogans plastered on every wall.

New café offers taste of Quebec independence | Globalnews.ca

Complete with comfortable couches, a polished-wood espresso bar, a small stage and even a conference room, Club Pays — country club in English — opened its doors to the public on Friday and is ready to become a hub in Montreal for the Quebec independence movement.

“Some countries are born out of celebration,” reads one of the posters on the wall next to where 32-year-old Camille Goyette-Gingras was sitting as she spoke to The Canadian Press.

She presides over a Quebec sovereigntist organization called Organisations unies pour l’indépendance (Oui Québec) that runs the new coffee shop.

Aside from coffee and snacks, Goyette-Gingras said the venue will also offer people a taste of separatist politics.

Story continues below advertisement

“We wanted to combine the spirit of celebration with the push for independence because, for us, creating a country is a moment of collective joy,” she said inside the café.

The shop is the latest niche café in a city that already has a range of venues for different tastes, including a coffee shop for cat lovers, another for ceramics as well as a café for gaming enthusiasts.

The operators of Club Pays say their own spot will be the first of its kind, showcasing how millennials and gen Z are adopting the independence movement amid renewed promises for a referendum. They also say it reflects an enthusiasm for Quebec sovereignty that goes beyond any particular political party.

Their space was actually open to their own members and other advocacy groups representing youth, seniors and feminists since October, before opening to the general public.

“People (were) banging on the window, for real,” said Goyette-Gingras. “You’d be surprised how often they come in to find out who this group of young people is that’s opening a café on St-Hubert (Street). Their curiosity is sincere and wonderful, and we regularly have really interesting discussions.”

Set up in a neighbourhood known for its Latino population, the café’s workers say they want to demystify the Quebec sovereignty movement, addressing questions and concerns of people from all walks of life.

“For some people it’s the first time they meet a separatist,” said Goyette-Gingras. “When you only see things on television, it’s true that you don’t feel like you’re being spoken to as a human being.”

Goyette-Gingras said Club Pays will also host events and serve as a working space, all dedicated to promoting discussions around Quebec culture and the independence movement.

Oui Québec members are also hoping their new café serves as an inspiration that will lead to a network of sovereigntist venues throughout Quebec.

Alex Valiquette, responsible for communications at Oui Québec, said he brought back the idea after a student exchange last year in Spain, where he visited a number of Barcelona bars and cafés supporting the Catalonian independence movement.

The proceeds of these spaces run by sovereigntists groups help them finance other political activities, he said.

“In Quebec, we’re already a society that invests and is known for its co-operatives and social economies. I was like, ‘Hey, there’s so much to do with that,’” said Valiquette.

The Catalonian sovereignty movement goes back to the 19 century. Spanish dictator Francisco Franco abolished Catalonian autonomy in 1938, and Catalonians held a referendum of their own in 2017. Leaders of the movement were jailed as political prisoners and pardoned in 2021.

Story continues below advertisement

Valiquette isn’t the first to draw comparisons between the Quebec and Catalonian independence movements. Politicians like Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchette and Québec solidaire parliamentary leader Ruba Ghazal have made their way to Catalonia to participate in conferences and distribute letters to political prisoners.

Quebec’s National Assembly also unanimously passed a motion in support of Catalonians in 2019.

But despite their dreams and hopes for the new coffee shop, public opinion surveys in Quebec suggest they have some work to do.

Although a CROP survey from last August suggested 56 per cent of those between the ages of 18 and 34 said they were favourable to the idea of independence, other polls in recent years have consistently indicated that only 30 per cent of Quebecers would vote yes in a referendum on sovereignty.

Valérie-Anne Mahéo, a political science professor at Université Laval, agrees that most Quebecers are not eager to push for sovereignty at this time, but she said grassroots spaces like the coffee shop can be a healthy part of democracy by promoting dialogue and countering polarization.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a proper debate on the pros and cons (of Quebec independence),” she said. “There is a new generation, one that has not experienced the high points of the ‘yes’ campaigns, that has not experienced the major societal debates on the future of Quebec.”

Story continues below advertisement

But Goyette-Gingras said there’s a “sovereigntist third wave” brewing among young Quebecers.

She said she embraced the independence movement after joining major social protest movements in Quebec, including in 2012 when tens of thousands took to the streets for weeks, banging pots and pans to protest proposed hikes in university tuition fees.

Explicitly separatist artists have also been rising in popularity, like rapper Kinji00 and singer Lou-Adriane Cassidy — who won four ADISQ awards, including best female artist, and was shortlisted for the Polaris prize. Meme pages promoting sovereigntist ideas gather more than 100,000 followers and separatist student organizations have cropped up in CEGEPs and universities.

It’s part of what is decentralizing the separatist movement and taking it out of the hands of political parties like the Parti Québécois and Québec solidaire, Goyette-Gingras said.

Goyette-Gingras said while politicians have their role to play, the independence movement needs to be larger and more inclusive.

“Quebec culture is enduring precisely because it is constantly changing. One of the things that has ensured that Quebec culture has always remained enduring is that it has become intertwined with the people who have settled in Quebec,” said Goyette-Gingras.

She adds that at Club Pays, everyone is welcome.

We’re almost out of the woods —the worst-ever Mercury in retrograde is finally coming to an end

Folks, we’re almost out of the woods.

On Friday, March 20, Mercury, our planet of the mind and mouth and the mischief that lives between, ends its retrograde.

Mercury is the planet of communication, connection, expression, media, technology, travel, and commerce. It is the fastest-moving celestial body in our sky, second only to the moon.

Mercury has been backspinning in Pisces, its least favorite place to be and sign to shine in, since February 26.

Mercury will station direct at 3:32 p.m. ET at 8°29 degrees of Pisces, but will remain in its post-retrograde shadow or retroshade until April 9. During this post-game wrap-up, we’re tasked with integrating everything we’ve learned or been taught over the past few weeks.

Mercury is both in fall and in detriment in Pisces, which makes communication murky when the planet is direct in these mutable waters and opaque AF when it’s retrograde.

Contrary to the terminology, Mercury and other planets do not ever move backward in space; they merely slow down, a deceleration that appears to be a reversal from our vantage point on Earth. Mercury slips into this illusory backspin three or four times a year.

As above, so below, my friends, as this optical illusion can translate to us earthlings feeling like we are stuck, impeded, or regressing during this transit.

When Mercury is direct, the realms that it rules generally move smoothly, communication is clear, words are our friends, and we are infinitely less likely to accidentally send a nude to the family or work group chat.

When the planet goes retrograde, all bets are off.

Mercury loves logic, details, research, conversation, and the honey bee accumulation of information.

However, Mercury in Pisces is more concerned with how things feel or could be rather than how they are. In this sign, Mercury prefers research that looks like reading soap scum in the bathtub for symbols.

Mercury wants clarity, and Pisces is about as clear as an iridescent oil spill.

While Pisces is the most psychic, imaginative, and intuitive of all zodiac signs, it is also the most prone to delusion and self-deception.

“During this retrograde, discernment is everything,” said astrologer and spiritual advisor Latha Jay. “Ask yourself: am I seeing clearly, or am I projecting what I want to see or what I wish was true?”

Add to the punch bowl that retrogrades bring up and dig up people and themes from the past, and Pisces is the sign of romantic hallucination.

Translation: a high time for haunting when exes reemerge, and the draw of blinking back at them through rose-colored glasses is nigh.

We’re pulled to the past not as punishment, but as a necessary step toward progress.

All that has come before is bubbling up from the underbelly for three primary purposes:

  • To show us how far we’ve actually come and how much healing we’ve woven between then and now
  • To draw our attention to a lesson we’ve failed to learn/a truth we’ve been avoiding
  • To deal us a little karmic test, providing a choice that keeps us in a familiar cycle alongside an option that serves our evolution.

“Making concrete, life-altering decisions now is like trying to read a map underwater—the details are blurred. The shadow side here involves confusion, escapism, and the potential for old addictive patterns to resurface,” Hong Kong-based certified counselor and award-winning astrologist Letao Wang told The Post.

If you’ve been having trouble finding a steady place to land amid this tumult or are confused about what to do, your body is the truest compass point.

When Mercury retrogrades through a water sign, as it is now and will be for the rest of this year’s retrogrades, we are called to listen to the water we are made of.

There’s an old British idiom, “to feel it in your waters,” used to describe a deep psychic certainty, and never has there been a better time to call it in

Pay close attention to your nervous system in the coming days; if your hackles raise or your stomach clenches, it’s a no-go. If you feel at ease and/or energized, go forth.

Onward and upward, even when feeling backward, folks.

Mercury retroshade

While Mercury stations direct on March 20, it will not clear its post-retrograde shadow or retroshade until April 9.

Next Mercury retrograde

After this cycle, Mercury will go retrograde in the sign of Cancer on June 29th. It will station direct on July 23 and clear its post-retrograde shadow on August 6.

Dear Abby: I prefer sleeping without my wife

DEAR ABBY: I have been married 44 years and have always slept in the same bed with my wife. Last week, I caught a virus, and we decided that I would sleep in the spare bedroom until it was gone. I have now discovered I sleep better by myself, and I enjoy the freedom of the bed. How do I tell my wife I’d prefer sleeping alone? I love her to death, but I really like my freedom in bed. — SLEEPING FOR ONE IN WISCONSIN

DEAR SLEEPING: Couples sleep apart for many reasons — and it doesn’t signal that there is anything wrong with the marriage. Tell your wife what a restful and restorative sleep you had in the spare room (“the best you’ve had in years”). A good night’s sleep is imperative for good health. Then explain that it’s nothing personal, but you would like to continue sleeping solo.

Don’t be surprised if she then tells you that she, too, slept better not having to share the bed. However, if she isn’t receptive, perhaps two beds in your main bedroom would work for the two of you.

DEAR ABBY: My 71-year-old husband tells looonnnggg stories about himself to everyone — family, friends and even strangers. I’m bored to tears hearing the same stories over and over, and I can see others’ eyes glaze over to the point of avoidance. I have asked him to share only stories that are less than 10 years old, but that hasn’t stopped him. What else can I do? This has gotten so bad that I find myself avoiding social situations with him. — MAKE IT STOP IN CALIFORNIA

DEAR MAKE IT STOP: Has your husband always been like this, or could his repetitiveness be a symptom of mental decline? When people regale others with old stories, it can mean that their short-term memory is deteriorating. Is the problem that your husband had an illustrious career years ago but has nothing recent to discuss? If his problem is simply that he’s a crashing bore, consider socializing without him more often. Your friends and family will appreciate you for it.

DEAR ABBY: I live in an independent retirement home. There is a lady who sits at our table at lunch. If someone asks a question, before the person being addressed can respond, she butts in and answers. If someone says something, she tries to top them. We have tried insulting her, but she pouts for a few minutes and then is back at it. When we moved to another table, she moved also. Any suggestions? — SPOILED LUNCH IN ALABAMA

DEAR SPOILED: Yes, rather than shun the clueless woman, one of you should have a private conversation with her. (Is she in control of all of her faculties?) Explain that her personality is “too strong and dominant” for the rest of you, which has made you all uncomfortable, and this is why she should sit elsewhere at lunchtime. If she denies it, give her some examples. Do not expect her to like it, but if you speak up, you may be able to enjoy your lunch in peace after that. If not, talk to the manager of the retirement home about reassigning her.
