Kai Rooney was among the Manchester United starlets to send their messages of support to youngster Jaydan Kamason after he signed a new contract until the summer of 2028, with the option of a further year. Last season, the full-back was part of a strong Under-18 squad and was included on the bench under Ruben Amorim in both the home and away matches of the Europa League quarter-final and semi-final.

The 19-year-old has missed parts of the current campaign through injury, but has still managed 15 appearances for the Under-21s. United signed Kamason from grassroots outfit Stockport Vikings for the Emerging Talent Programme (ETP) aged 10 and became the first player from that scheme to put pen to paper on a professional deal with the club.

After signing a new deal, Kamson took to social media and said: “Proud moment for me and family to sign a new long-term contract at this special club. We thank God and keep pushing. More to come, just a matter of timing.”

Several Manchester United youth stars were quick to off their support, with Kai Rooney attaching a video of a man applauding.

He said: “Jaydan has been in real good form of late, so he’s in that position where he’s put in some real strong and consistent performances, as you’d expect from a second year U18 player here.

“He’s in a real good space. He’s such a fantastic kid, he’s got real good athleticism and he likes to get forward on the outside. And listen, he’ll be watching that goal back for a while.

“He’s always been a full-back that has liked to get forward and he can wear people down, he’s wiry, he’s very athletic and can get on top of people and really impact the game in the final third.

“We’re really excited about him and think that he has real big potential, but he’s a humble kid and he’ll know he needs to get better and that he’s got things to work on.”

Manchester United have a rich history when it comes to promoting players from their academy into the first team. The Class of ’92 will forever be the standard the Reds aspire towards for their young players but in recent years, golden generations have been few and far between.

That being said, we have still seen gems come through the ranks who have contributed to the first team. Kobbie Mainoo is the standout of recent years while Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad have all had varying degrees of success and exposure to the United starting XI.

With Ruben Amorim in charge, the relationship between the first team and academy was strained but, under Michael Carrick’s watch, this is starting to mend. Once again, it seems like the club are united in their approach to development and that pathway from Carrington to Old Trafford is now realistic.

There are plenty of young players who are impressing but United’s attackers are the ones who are really catching the eye. Even if you are not following the academy regularly, you will have heard of the name JJ Gabriel. The 15-year-old has been the subject of highlight reels aplenty this season.

Despite being in his mid teens, the forward has been excelling in the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup. He has scored an astonishing 21 goals in 24 appearances and plays with the elegance of a more seasoned professional. Gabriel has even been invited into first team training sessions this season – a remarkable feat for someone so young.

However, because of his age, Gabriel has been unable to play in the Premier League this season. That ban will lift in the summer and there is already hope he will be able to emulate the success of Max Dowman at Arsenal.

Thanks to the brilliance of Gabriel, Noah Ajayi has floated under the radar this season. However, he is another player who the Reds think highly of.

The 17-year-old German winger has scored a more modest seven goals in 16 appearances this season but has hit red hot form at the right time as United fought their way to the FA Youth Cup semi-finals. That competition is a testing ground for young players and Ajayi is proving more than capable of holding his own.

He is also closer to making that step up to the first team as he has a physical presence that is more suited to senior football. His goal in the victory over Sunderland was a sign of his potential as he showed great awareness to drift through the defence and slot home.

But while Ajayi is progressing nicely away from the limelight, Kai Rooney is having to adapt to senior exposure at just 16.

Of course, his surname has led to this fame but don’t be fooled, Rooney is not simply living off his father’s legacy. The winger has been slowly exposed to the U18s this season and has made his Old Trafford debut in the FA Youth Cup.

He bagged his first U18s goal against Middlesbrough in August and after a spell away from the age group, returned in February to bag a goal and an assist in three U18 Premier League matches. Sadly for Rooney, injury has brought a premature end to his season.

But, those dreaming of another Rooney stealing the headlines for United in the future can take encouragement from the progress he has made this term. All this is incredibly positive for the Reds and should be encouraged for the future.

Continuing to bring players through the academy will allow the Reds to save money in transfer windows. Even if just one of these players becomes a regular United starter, the investment in the academy continues to be worthwhile.

Kai Rooney has confirmed he will miss the rest of the season after picking up an injury.

The 16-year-old had been on a major rise in trajectory for Manchester United after making seven appearances and finding the net twice. The teenager was part of the U16s side that won the Premier League Shield and has featured for Darren Fletcher’s U18s team throughout this campaign.

Kai is aiming to follow in his father Wayne’s footsteps at Old Trafford. The forward became an icon at United, scoring 253 goals and assisting 143 times in 559 appearances for the club.

He won a plethora of silverware, including five Premier League titles, one Champions League, a Europa League trophy and plenty of domestic cups.

Heartbreaking injury

Kai Rooney confirmed he has sustained an injury that will rule him out for the rest of the season. This will in turn deny the teenager the chance of featuring in the U18s bid for glory in the FA Youth Cup.

In a sad post on his Instagram story, the 16-year-old wrote: “Disappointed to be out for the rest of the season. Back stronger next pre-season,” alongside a red love heart emoji. The caption was written on top of a black-and-white image of Kai in a United kit during a game.

The United youth side have been finding success with Kai in the squad, as he made his first appearance at Old Trafford in a FA Youth Cup fourth-round win over Derby County. The team will face Crystal Palace in the semi-finals and will face the same opponents at Selhurst Park in the Premier League Cup final.

The U18s are locked in a battle at the top of the league with Manchester City but Kai will now no longer be able to participate in the run-in.

Support from within

Parents Wayne and Coleen were on hand to support Kai at his final appearance before his injury was confirmed. The 16-year-old helped the U16s to a statement 2-0 win in the Premier League Shield on Tuesday.

The Rooney clan were in attendance to cheer Kai on as Wayne posted a picture of the teenager with a medal around his neck on social media. Youngest brother Cass was also there to take in the victory.

Despite previously banning his famous dad from attending the games as per Coleen, the young star’s mother admitted he is used to handling fame. Speaking to The Times, Coleen said: “He’s lived it from a young age.

“When we used to go to matches when he was younger and he’d get a lot of people coming up saying, ‘Oh, are you Wayne Rooney’s son?’

“But he is strong-minded and he always has been. I’ve got no worries about the way he deals with it. It’s nice that we know what to expect.

“And we can try to guide him. Obviously, it’s his life, his passion. He can decide what he wants to do. But I think it’s good we’ve got the knowledge.”

Kai has been enjoying a great year so far in the youth brackets of United’s academy set-up. After scoring for the U18s, the teenager has been offered a scholarship in the youth system and will be able to sign a professional deal next campaign.

The youngster has also signed with Triple S Sports, an agency that secured a long-term deal with dad Wayne. Other United first-team stars, including Harry Maguire, are among the agency’s clients.

They announced the signing on Instagram with a caption that said: “Delighted to announce the signing of @kairooney.10 to Triple S Sports! We’re excited to begin working with the Manchester United forward as he continues his journey in the game. A bright future ahead.”

The left-winger signed a boot deal with Puma in 2022 when he was just 12 years old, too. However, Kai is not allowed to wear his Puma boots when playing for the U16s due to a longstanding club policy.

Speaking to the Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast, dad Wayne said: “He’s obviously with Puma but when he plays for the Manchester United U16s, something which I really like is he can’t wear his Puma boots.

“All the academy have to wear the same boots. They do it because there’s people from areas where they can’t afford certain boots so I think it’s really good. But he’s played for the U18s a few times and he can then wear his Puma boots. He’s doing well to be fair to him.”

Both teenagers found the net on Saturday as Manchester United’s Under-18s beat Blackburn 3-0, further fuelling excitement among supporters who see them as future first-team prospects. But despite the rising hype, those closest to their journeys are urging restraint.

Carrick, United’s interim head coach, has already highlighted the need for patience with 15-year-old Gabriel. He stressed that while the club rates him highly, careful development is key to managing both his talent and the attention that comes with it.

“JJ is a big talent. We obviously think an awful lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development,” Carrick said earlier this month.

Rooney, United’s all-time leading scorer with 253 goals, has taken a similar stance regarding his son Kai. Speaking to former team-mate Gary Neville, he made it clear it is far too early to predict whether the 16-year-old will follow the same path he took to the top.

“You never know. I think he’s shown potential and good signs,” Rooney Sr said. “He’ll be at United for the next two years and that’s when they make decisions on you so we’ll have to just wait and see.”

Man United’s U18s are locked in a title battle with neighbours Manchester City for the U18 Premier League crown, and their latest win over Blackburn only strengthened their push. Gabriel opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Kai doubled their lead shortly after coming on from the bench. Jim Thwaites then wrapped up the victory with a stunning free-kick.

Gabriel has been the U18s’ star this season, scoring 21 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions. Although still too young for Premier League action, he has already trained with the first team on several occasions – an indication of how highly he is rated within the club.

“What he’s done when he’s trained, he’s done well as you’d expect and it’s good to have the younger players come up with us,” Carrick said. “He’s doing really well.”

United have been keen to show Gabriel a pathway to the first-team – and the youngster and his family were invited into the Old Trafford directors’ box for the opening game of the season against Arsenal.

Kai, meanwhile, has drawn attention of his own after rising rapidly through the academy ranks. Like Gabriel, he is among the youngest players featuring regularly at U18 level, underlining just how highly both are regarded.

The club’s track record in developing youth talent only adds to the excitement. From Bobby Charlton and George Best to David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, and more recently Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, Manchester United’s academy has consistently produced first-team stars.

With that history comes inevitable comparisons – but as Wayne Rooney and Carrick have both stressed, expectations must be managed carefully.

The Old Trafford icon has supposedly promised his 16-year-old offspring he wouldn’t attend any more of his matches. Not due to any underlying tension or animosity, however, but because Rooney Sr is routinely swamped by fans.

United’s under-18s progressed to the semi-finals of the Youth Cup on Wednesday after beating Sunderland 3-2. Chido Obi, Noah Ajayi and Junior Brown provided the goals in a comeback win over the Black Cats.

However, Rooney will nevertheless have been left disappointed to see son Kai remain an unused substitute for the quarter-final clash. He will have been over the moon to see the next wave of United talent advance as they look to claim the crown for the first time since 2022, however.

Like any prospect, Kai would likely love to see his iconic dad attend as many matches as possible. However, Wayne’s wife, Coleen, previously revealed their son’s frustrations after seeing his dad’s attention stolen by others whenever he turned up for his matches.

“That’s the thing with kids I think, it’s hard to go on days out,” she said in 2024. “Kai told Wayne to stop coming to football games when he played grassroots tournaments and stuff because he used to get swarmed, and he couldn’t even watch the game.

“How do you say to all of these kids, ‘Go away, I’m watching my son?’ Adults, it’s different, you could speak to them. So he (Kai) just said, ‘Oh, dad there’s no point you coming because you don’t even watch me play anyway.’ Which is sad, but it can’t be helped anyway.”

Despite not turning out for Darren Fletcher’s side in the quarters, Kai may get another shot in next month’s semi against Crystal Palace. United will take on the Eagles in the hopes of setting up an FA Youth Cup final against either Manchester City or Blackburn.

It’s not that Fletcher’s shy of promoting any especially young talents among his crops of future stars, either. That much is apparent after 15-year-old JJ Gabriel played a prominent starting role in the win over Sunderland.

Rooney Jr. has made six total appearances for United’s under-18 this season. He has scored a single goal (in a 5-0 rout of Middlesbrough back in August) and recorded one assist in that span, while his sole Youth Cup appearance came late in a win over Derby two months ago.

Kai is still aiming to revive the kind of form that once saw him grab 56 goals and 28 assists in a single season for United’s under-12s. However, he has time on his side, to say the least, as he looks to follow his father and forge his own path to success at United.

The United legend had discussed his son’s future in the game and made it clear what he wants to see.

Speaking via the BBC last year, he said: “He has great coaches at Manchester United, so I take a stand off approach. I speak to him, but for me it’s all about his mentality and his mindset, to make sure he keeps enjoying it – that’s the main thing for me.”

Rooney’s words on those coaching his son, which includes former teammate Darren Fletcher, was further proven only recently by their progression to the under-18s Premier League Cup final.

Rooney was on the score sheet in the 3-1 semi-final victory over West Ham United with the battle for silverware set for next month at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.

Fellow United starlet JJ Gabriel, who has trained with the first-team, was also on target with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in attendance at Carrington.

Michael Carrick has also been at several academy matches since taking charge but he was busy preparing the first-team for a Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

16-year-old Rooney appears to be taking everything in his stride despite the huge pressure that could be felt on his shoulders with Mum Coleen recently opening up on that.

Brooklyn Beckham and Kai Rooney had contrasting reactions when it came to dealing with the pressure of being sons of football icons.

Now a business owner, Brooklyn’s struggle to deal with the sporting legacy his father forged led to him quitting football, which was previously revealed by the Inter Miami co-owner in a 2015 interview.

Speaking to ABC at the time, David said: “One of my boys turned around to me the other day and said, ‘Daddy, I’m not sure I want to play football all the time.’ “It broke my heart a little bit.

“He said, ‘Every time I went to the field, I know people are saying, ‘This is David Beckham’s son,’ and if I am not as good as you, then it is not good enough.'” In a 2022 interview with Variety, Brooklyn admitted turning his back on football was “sad”.

He said: “My dad wasn’t sad, because he was like, ‘I just want you to be happy.’ But of course, I was sad. It was my whole life since I was literally two.” Brooklyn’s inability to handle the pressure is a far cry from Kai’s circumstances.

The 16-year-old currently plays for Man United’s U18 team as his father – the club’s record goalscorer – casts quite the shadow given his historic legacy at Old Trafford. However, the illustrious career of Rooney is not hampering his son’s belief in himself.

While Rooney was primarily a centre-forward, Kai usually operates as a right-winger. Coleen spoke to the Mirror in September 2024 on the expectation placed on her children, Kai specifically, as she said: “We’ve never pressured them into even playing football. We’ve always just let them decide what they want to do.

“My eight-year-old was playing and doing really well but then decided he didn’t want to, and that’s OK. I think they sometimes get pressure off other people, you know. People approach them now and then if we’re out, they do say, ‘Are you are as good as your dad?’

“Kai says ‘I’m a different type of player.’ You’ve got to let them know that you don’t have to follow and to be your own person.”

Manchester United prospect Kai Rooney has already outlined the scale of his ambitious targets. The teenager, son of legendary United forward Wayne, previously stated he aspired to be a regular fixture for the first team at Old Trafford within the next decade.

Kai, 16, has developed into one of United’s most promising talents in recent years. Much like his father, he is a prolific forward whose main strength lies in his goalscoring ability.

The youngster has recently moved into a right-wing position and made his first competitive appearance at Old Trafford in the FA Youth Cup. He is even eligible to feature for the first team this season, though he doesn’t look especially close after he missed much of the first half of the campaign through injury.

Speaking in 2023, he discussed the scope of his goals should he progress to elite level football. He demonstrated that, despite his footballing pedigree, he isn’t expecting things to be handed to him on a plate and is prepared to work tirelessly and commit fully to realising his aspirations.

“In 10 years, hopefully I will be playing in the Premier League for Man United,” the youngster said. “That’s where I see myself but I’ve got to make it happen with the hard work and everything behind the scenes.

“I could play on the wing as well, but I’m mainly a striker that scores goals,” he said while representing Manchester Grammar Schools during an international tournament in 2023. “That’s what I’ve got to keep doing to win the tournament.

“I’m quite pleased with my performances. Obviously, I could have been better, but generally, I think that I have been quite good.”

Coming anywhere near matching his father’s achievements will be no simple task. Wayne found the net 253 times to become United’s all-time leading scorer, but Kai has displayed promising signs of his ability at age-group level.

During the 2021/22 season with United’s Under-12s, Kai racked up 56 goals and provided 28 assists in a single campaign. This means he was directly involved in 84 goals over the course of the year.

Earlier this month, he netted four times for United’s U16s, and his displays have also secured him multiple appearances with the U18 squad, despite being younger than the majority of his team-mates.

“He’s enjoying it,” his father Wayne told The Athletic in July 2023. “That’s the most important thing. He’s doing everything he can to try to have a career in football and not just him, my other children as well.

“They love the game and my advice – to any children – is play to enjoy. There’s that much pressure when you do get to the professional level and sometimes you forget why you’re playing the game.

“You’re playing because you love playing the game and you enjoy playing the game. As long as you’re doing everything right to give yourself the best opportunity then you never know.”

Representing Liverpool Schoolboys, Wayne once netted 72 goals in a single season in his teens – a record that stood for nearly 20 years.

At just nine years old, playing for Copplehouse boys’ club in the Walton and Kirkdale junior league, he bagged 99 goals during the 1994/95 campaign. That remarkable goalscoring run caught the eye of Everton scout Bob Pendleton, who brought him to the Merseyside club.

Following his arrival at Everton’s academy, the goals continued to come. In 1995/96, featuring for both the club’s U10 and U11 sides, Wayne racked up an astonishing 114 goals in just 29 matches before eventually breaking into the first team at 16 and later going on to sign for United.

Kai has spent several years in the United academy and plays as an attacker, just like Rooney Senior. After showing promise in the youth system, Kai is amongst a group of 14 exceptionally talented youngsters who have been presented with new terms by United.

According to The Sun, Kai and Jacey Carrick, the son of the Red Devils’ current head coach, Michael, have been presented with new deals alongside others. If accepted, Rooney Jr would sign a one-year scholarship which would then convert to a three-year professional contract when he reaches 17.

The report suggests said contract would see him earn approximately £50,000 per year plus an annual signing-on fee, though the Rooney family are yet to approve the deal.

A source told the outlet: “The group is very strong and the majority of the boys including Kai and Jacey have been offered deals. It means when they finish school they can go into full-time ‘football employment’ and then when they turn 17 are guaranteed a pro status.

“They still have a long way to go to make the grade, but they can be very proud that the club thinks they have a chance of making it.”

Wayne, who holds the record for the most goals scored for the club, expressed his pride last month after watching his eldest son play for Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup against Derby County.

He said: “Kai got moved up to the under-18s squad for the Youth Cup and it was great to see him come on. It brought back memories of when I played in the Youth Cup for Everton.

“It was a proud moment and I’m delighted for him. Hopefully he continues that and he can have a good run with the team.”

Kai’s mother, Coleen, has emphasised that they have not pushed their children to follow in Wayne’s footsteps. Speaking to The Mirror in September 2024, she stated: “We’ve never pressured them into even playing football. We’ve always just let them decide what they want to do. My eight-year-old was playing and doing really well but then decided he didn’t want to, and that’s OK.

“I think they sometimes get pressure off other people, you know. People approach them now and then if we’re out, they do say, ‘Are you are as good as your dad?’ Kai says ‘I’m a different type of player.’ You’ve got to let them know that you don’t have to follow and to be your own person.”

Wayne has expressed his satisfaction with the interest Michael Carrick and his coaching team have shown in the academy since taking over. Speaking on his BBC podcast last month, he said: “It is great to see all the coaches taking a big interest in the academy. In the next few years, some of those players might get an opportunity for the first team, so it is important they have that interest.

“On Saturday, they were all at the under-16s game as well before they travelled to London. It is great to see that coming back into the club.

“I have been quite vocal on this. It used to be the norm but it has been missing in the last few years. With my two lads in the academy, I haven’t seen that and it was a bit disappointing. The lift it gives to the players and the players’ parents, seeing the first team manager there. That is how the club should be run.”
