A ruptured pipe is to blame for water flowing through the Van Horne overpass onto a main artery’s walkway Thursday in Montreal.
William Murray, section chief for the Montreal fire department, confirmed they received a call around 9:20 a.m. Thursday about a “burst pipe” at 1 Van Horne Ave., next to the overpass over St-Laurent Blvd. in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough.
At noon Thursday, water was flowing down the wall of the pedestrian walkway and onto St-Laurent on the west side of the overpass. The pedestrian walkway on St-Laurent was blocked with caution tape on both the north and south sides at Bellechasse St. and the Van Horne Ave.
One of the car lanes on St-Laurent next to the leakage was closed off with orange cones at around noon. A fire hydrant nearby also had water flooding out of it.
Geneviève Allard, spokesperson for the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, said police officers and borough teams were on site Thursday morning. Police temporarily closed the road to traffic to ensure safety, she added, and the road was reopened at around 11:15 a.m.
“After inspection, our crews confirmed that the leak was coming from a private building located on private property, with water flowing under the viaduct. Our crews closed the valve and cleared the sump under the viaduct to allow the water to drain properly,” Allard wrote in an email statement.
Murray said fire department personnel were at the scene in the morning, but it is the borough’s jurisdiction to manage the issue.
Allard said the “abundance of water” caused potholes to appear in the area.
“Our asphalt crews were dispatched to the scene and are currently working to make the necessary repairs. Police officers are still on site to direct traffic, with one lane open,” Allard said.
The flooding appeared to be over by 1:45 p.m.
