“Loser has to take Terry Rozier back”: Bill Simmons ups the stakes for Charlotte Hornets-Miami Heat NBA Play-In matchup

The Miami Heat waived Terry Rozier, who has been on indefinite leave after getting arrested at the start of the season, on April 10. The Heat will face the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA Play-In Tournament, and Bill Simmons found a way to up the stakes.

On the latest episode of “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” Simmons shared a hilarious way to make things interesting between the Hornets and Heat. A well-known WWE fan, The Ringer founder, added a stipulation for the loser of the game.

“For Charlotte vs. Miami, winner advances to the 8-9, loser has to take Terry Rozier back,” Simmons said, according to NBA Courtside. “He’s actually at the game hanging from the arena like how WWE does the Money in the Bank (briefcase). Terry Rozier is just in a strap hanging from the arena, and after the game, gets lowered down and joins one of the two teams.”

Bill Simmons was alluding to the Money in the Bank concept in WWE. For someone to win that match, they have to climb a ladder and get the Money in the Bank briefcase, which contains a future world title shot. It can be cashed in at any time and anywhere in the next 365 days.

In this case, the winner gets a shot at earning the No. 8 seed in the playoffs, while the loser takes home Terry Rozier. It’s a hilarious proposition by Simmons and was done in good fun.

Rozier is already a free agent and will likely remain one until the federal investigation into his alleged involvement in sports betting is over.

Terry Rozier’s NBA career

After two years at Louisville, Terry Rozier entered the 2015 NBA Draft. He was selected 16th overall by the Boston Celtics. He played sporadically as a rookie before becoming part of the rotation in his second year.

Rozier spent four seasons in Boston, primarily playing as the sixth man. His best season in Beantown was in 2018, averaging 11.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

The Charlotte Hornets scooped him up in the summer of 2019 as part of a sign-and-trade involving Kemba Walker. He had his best years with the Hornets, putting up 20.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game in the 2020-21 season.

At the 2024 trade deadline, the Miami Heat acquired him in exchange for veteran guard Kyle Lowry and a protected future first-round pick. He had his ups and downs in Miami, mostly coming off the bench since the trade.
