United’s Kvaratskhelia ‘decision’ sparks bewilderment amid Rashford’s new stance

Manchester United will soon be focusing on the summer transfer window as they first look to seal qualification for the Champions League under Michael Carrick

Manchester United face a crucial stretch of the season as they look to secure Champions League qualification under interim head coach Michael Carrick. The Reds have not played in Europe’s elite competition since 2023, but are in an excellent position to qualify.

United sit third and could go 10 points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea when they meet the Blues on Saturday evening (8pm). And attention will already be turning to the summer transfer window behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford has enjoyed a solid campaign on loan at Barcelona and could be sold to raise some funds. Meanwhile, French football expert Julian Laurens has questioned why there was no significant attempt to bring Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to M16 before he joined Paris Saint-Germain in January 2025.

Kvaratskhelia decision

Football journalist Laurens has questioned why United and other Premier League clubs did not make a stronger attempt to sign Kvaratskhelia before he joined PSG.

Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast, he said: “How come Kvaratskhelia never came to the Premier League instead of PSG is beyond us, really. I can’t believe there is not one of the top English clubs who looked at him

“Manchester United, I mean, right now, I know [Matheus] Cunha plays there and he’s a good player, but put Kvaratskhelia at Old Trafford and he becomes your new hero automatically.”

Isaac Seelochan of the Manchester Evening News says: “Kvaratskhelia would have been an excellent signing, but it’s hard to imagine he would have chosen United over a PSG team playing Champions League football.

“And after what happened to both clubs last season – even the most die-hard United fans cannot fault his decision!”

Rashford response

United loanee Marcus Rashford is reportedly open to returning to United this summer as doubts over a permanent move to Barcelona continue.

BBC Sport report that Rashford and another loanee Andre Onana could return if needed.

However, it is said that the Reds do not want to address the issue publicly as they still have work to do to seal a Champions League return.

Isaac Seelochan of the Manchester Evening News says: “It’s hard to see Rashford having the motivation to play for United again. It feels like that ship has sailed and he’s happier in Spain.

“Perhaps another La Liga club could be tempted if a permanent move to Barca fails to materialise.”
