Arsenal are through to the Champions League semi-finals after beating Sporting CP on Tuesday night, and Manchester City may have a key advantage

Manchester City may have been given a welcome boost after the Gunners booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a 1-0 aggregate victory over Sporting at the Emirates Stadium. It was a tense evening for the Gunners, who could only manage a 0-0 draw against the Portuguese club on home turf.

Kai Havertz’s goal from the first leg proved decisive as Mikel Arteta’s men kept their dreams of a Premier League and Champions League double very much alive. However, the Gunners have endured a difficult spell in recent weeks, with a number of pundits now casting doubt over their ability to claim any major honours, with City ramping up the pressure on their title rivals.

Arsenal were defeated by Premier League title challengers Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final last month, before suffering an embarrassing FA Cup exit at the hands of Championship outfit Southampton.

Further damage was done when the Gunners surrendered points at home to Bournemouth, with the Cherries claiming a 2-1 triumph in north London. Man City wasted no time in capitalising, thrashing Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to close the gap on Arsenal.

Pep Guardiola’s men now trail the Gunners by just six points and boast a game in hand in the title race. The two sides are set to meet at the Etihad Stadium next, with the victor of that fixture widely expected to emerge as firm favourites for the title.

City were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid and have less games to play between now and the end of the season, which could be huge in the title race.
