It’s officially over now for the Winnipeg Jets, who were clinging to a thin thread of playoff hopes.
A 6-2 rout at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday night in Las Vegas officially eliminated the Jets from any chance of grasping a wild card spot.
The Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings clinched the final spots in the Western Conference.
“The guys are, they’re hurting,” Jets head coach Scott Arniel said after the game.
“Everybody, you know, we all want to be in the playoffs. That’s what our job is and our role is. And and when you get the reality of it, it sucks.”
Monday’s loss came two days after the Jets were hammered 7-1 in their own barn by the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.
One bright spot was Mark Scheifele recording a goal and assist to set a franchise single-season scoring record for the Jets with 101 points. Marian Hossa had 100 in the 2006-07 season when the team was still based in Atlanta and known as the Thrashers.

“I’m very blessed to play with some amazing players. I’m very blessed, man, … yeah, I’m proud of myself. And I know there’s still more, so that’s exciting,” Scheifele said.
With two games left in the Jets season — Tuesday night in Utah and Thursday night at home in Winnipeg — Scheifele can build on that record.
Vegas has not lost in regulation since coach John Tortorella (6-0-1) took over after Bruce Cassidy was fired.
Mark Stone scored his fourth goal in three games and added two assists while Jack Eichel had a goal and three assists to move Vegas closer to winning a fifth Pacific Division title in its nine seasons.
A victory over visiting Seattle in Wednesday night’s regular-season finale will give the Golden Knights the division title and home-ice advantage through at least the first two rounds of the NHL playoffs.
Ivan Barbashev, Rasmus Andersson each had a goal and an assist for Vegas, and Reilly Smith and Pavel Dorofeyev each scored a goal. Dorofeyev’s extended his club record for power-play goals in a season to 20.
Noah Hanifin had two assists and goalie Carter Hart finished with 21 saves.
Gabriel Vilardi also had a goal and assist for the Jets, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 32 shots.
The Golden Knights dominated from the beginning, outshooting the Jets 10-3 in the first period, but failed to get the puck past Hellebuyck. They finally did at 7:38 of the second on Stone’s short-handed breakaway.
Penalties were the theme in that period, the teams combining for eight of them. Vegas nearly scored on a power play late in the third, but Smith’s deflection of Hanifin’s shot from the point came just after the penalty time expired.
The teams combined for 15 penalties in the game.
Winnipeg won the Presidents’ Trophy last year for having the most regular season points (116) in the entire 32-team league. They went on to lose in the second round of the playoffs.
This year they have 82 points with the two games remaining and are in 25th place.
They’re tied in points with the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, who had a similar collapse this year.
