The Israeli military has also attacked the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon, where at least eight people were killed late Wednesday into Thursday, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state media.

Lebanon death toll rises to 77

The death toll on the number of people killed in Lebanon since a resurgence in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah has grown to 77, with 527 wounded, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

It’s unknown how many of the deaths were civilians. The health minister said earlier that seven children were killed.

More than 83,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon due to the renewed conflict.

Hezbollah command centres in Beirut hit

Additional Hezbollah command centres were struck in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, according to the Israeli military.

“A short while ago, the Israeli Air Force completed a wave of intelligence-based strikes in Beirut against several command centers belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organization,” the military said in a statement.

Among the targets was a command centre used by Hezbollah’s aerial unit. The military said the centres were intended to be used by Hzbollah to attack Israeli military personnel and civilians.

Airstrikes were heard throughout Beirut on Thursday. It wasn’t immediately clear what was hit.

Iran claims responsibility for attack on U.S. tanker

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has claimed responsibility for a Thursday attack on an American oil tanker in the northern Persian Gulf.

A statement read on Irian state television didn’t elaborate further, but it may be linked to an attack off the coast of Kuwait earlier in the day where a tanker was targeted, according to a report from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre.

Carney can’t rule out rolll in conflict

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada can’t rule out military participation in the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

During a joint news conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra, Carney said the question around Canada’s potential future involvement is a “fundamental hypothetical,” stating the conflict can spread very broadly.

“One can never categorically rule out participation,” he said. “We will stand by our allies, when it makes sense. There’s a distinction between the offensive actions that were taken and are being taken by the United States and Israel, that were taken by them without consultation with Canada, with other allies, and we’re not party to those actions.

“But we will always defend Canadians, we will always stand by and defend our allies when called upon.”
