Eight Wild Horse And Burro Roundups Underway Across The West As BLM Targets 14,830 Animals – World Animal News
Multiple federal wild horse and burro roundups are currently underway across Nevada, Arizona, and Utah as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continues coordinated removal operations on public lands.
According to American Wild Horse Conservation (AWHC):
“The latest numbers as of April 13. 8 roundups are currently active throughout the West, as part of the BLM’S plan to capture 14,830 wild horses and burros this year.”
The simultaneous nature of these operations has placed multiple herd management areas under pressure at once, with captures unfolding during peak foaling season, a period advocates say is especially vulnerable for wild horse and burro populations.
AWHC warns:
“Everyday, pregnant mares and jennies, as well as foals who have just entered the world, are losing their freedom-trapped and taken from their home. Spring is foaling season: This means the wild horse and burro population is at its most vulnerable. We are extremely concerned for their safety, not only during capture and removal, but also in the days and weeks that follow. Extreme stress can lead to complications during pregnancy, deadly capture myopathy in foals, and fatal illnesses in burros.”
AWHC provided updates across several active roundup sites, noting varying levels of completion and limited public reporting in some areas.
Capture Numbers and Deaths:
-
Caliente Complex (NV): 71 wild horses captured (37 stallions, 31 mares, 3 foals); 3 deaths reported

-
Lake Pleasant HMA (AZ): 79 burros captured (46 jacks, 30 jennies, 3 foals)
Advocates are calling for an immediate suspension of roundup operations during foaling season, citing heightened risks to mares, jennies, and newborn foals across multiple active sites.
