Toronto optometrists seeing a surge in dry eye patients

Eye care professionals in Toronto are warning of a dramatic increase of dry eye patients and digital screens may be driving the numbers.

“I’ve been practicing for about 18 years and over the last five to seven years, we’ve been seeing a massive increase, not just in the amount of dry eye patients that we’re seeing, but the age of the patients that we’re seeing,” said Liberty Village optometrist Dr. Ritesh Patel

His youngest dry eye patient, just eight years old.

According to Patel, where the condition would have earlier affected about 30 to 40 per cent of the general population and mostly women, he now estimates it’s up to 50 to 60 per cent.

“The thing that stands out the most is technology. The way our eyes work is, simply put, blinking allows your upper and lower lids to interact with each other, release oil, which keeps your eyes moist much like a windshield wiper,” said Dr. Patel. “But what we’re seeing now — staring at phones or their computers and with kids doing that much earlier in life, that blinking mechanism is just getting less and less.”

Dr. Lunksy, who practices near Bathurst and College streets, agrees, adding that it could get particularly bad in the winter months.

“When it gets really cold, people turn up the heat and in older buildings like this one, you tend to see that result in their eyes getting really dry,” said Dr. Lunsky.

Food sensitivities and what’s referred to as “eye hygiene” can also contribute to the condition and it can be an extremely painful.

Dr. Patel said the feeling of grittiness or what may feel like sand in the eyes can also take an emotional and mental toll.

The good news is that there are medical interventions, including heat and laser treatments, that can be effective. But the best measures are always preventative ones.

“Even when you’re showering or washing your face, take the heel of your hand, gently massage your eyelids, it helps the glands keep moving. Certainly giving yourself time away from the computer or away from your phone. Every 20 minutes, give your eyes a 20 second break, look 20 feet away, relax your eyes, get back into your natural blinking pattern.”

Dr. Patel said some first-line home remedies for dry eyes include a warm compress, preservative free eye drops and a humidifier if you can afford one. If the issue is chronic, you are advised to see your eye care professional.

Frank Stronach made complainant feel like ‘trapped animal’

Second of seven complainants testifies she was groped in Magna owner’s waterfront condo

She was flustered, emotional, defensive and wishing she was anywhere but in that downtown courtroom as she took the stand against Frank Stronach.

By the time his lawyer was finished with her fierce cross-examination, the second woman to accuse the business magnate of sexual assault in his lakeside condo more than 40 years ago had admitted she wondered if she’d given him the wrong message before she said he allegedly groped her and asked her to stay.

Now in her early 60s, she was in her early 20s at the time and making good money as a cocktail waitress at Rooney’s, a popular dinner club owned by Stronach, when she was abruptly fired. She left a message for the Magna owner at head office to find out why.

To her surprise, she testified, Stronach told her he’d look into it and later invited her to dinner near her new restaurant job on the waterfront to tell her what he’d learned.

Complainant says she had dinner with Stronach

After work, she said she walked over to dinner at the Admiral Inn, where Stronach was a perfect gentleman: “I felt like he was a fatherly mentor who was trying to get an answer for me,” she recalled.

She said he told her Rooney’s manager accused her of selling drugs at the club, something she vehemently denied. But she finally had her answer and could put it behind her.

After dinner, she said Stronach offered to have his driver take her home, but would she first like to stop at his nearby condo on the lake? He’d been pleasant, polite and respectful and she appreciated the effort he’d made to find out why she was fired.

It was “awkward,” but she went along, a decision she said she regrets. “I shouldn’t have been up there, really. I shouldn’t have gone.”

They took an elevator to what she thought was the penthouse or near the top of the building. She entered to find a wall of glass facing a beautiful vista of the lake. She said she declined Stronach’s offer of a drink and he poured one for himself.

‘Fatherly vibe’ was gone at condo

Asked by assistant Crown attorney Julia Bellehumeur to describe what happened inside the condo, the complainant paused for the first time to fight back tears. Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy, who is presiding over the judge-alone trial, asked if she’d like to take a break but she chose to press on. “I want to get this over with.”

She said that Stronach’s “fatherly vibe” was gone; she said she could feel the hairs on the back of her neck standing up and hear her heart pounding in her ears.

“I felt afraid to be in that apartment alone with him,” she testified.

“I felt like a trapped animal and I had to get out of there. I was terrified.”

Stronach wanted her to stay, she said, but she made excuses and moved to the door, asking for her coat. As he helped her put it on, she said she backed against the wall and felt he was too close. His body began pressing against hers, she said, as his hands began to grope her.

“They were touching my breasts and they were touching my hips and just up and down my body,” she recalled.

She said that when she insisted again that she had to go, Stronach backed off and she fled.

Bellehumeur asked if she ever suggested an interest in an intimate relationship.

“I’m absolutely convinced that I made it clear to him that that wasn’t my intention and that wasn’t going to happen,” she told the court. “He’s older than my father. I had no interest whatsoever.”

Stronach, 93, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges, including rape, sexual assault and forcible confinement, related to seven complainants. The founder of auto-parts giant Magna International faces a separate trial in Newmarket on similar charges later this year.

Despite the encounter, she later accepted a job at Magna and worked there for six years. Stronach, she explained, was always polite and professional.

After seeing a news report about his arrest and his insistence that the women were lying, the complainant came forward to her local police in August 2024.

Questioned about police statements

Under intense questioning by defence lawyer Leora Shemesh, who accused her of offering many new details for the first time, she agreed she told police as recently as last month that she never felt confined by Stronach and wondered at the time if she had given him “mixed messages.

“I don’t know. I don’t think I did,” she said in her recent police statement. “I had no intention of sharing an intimate evening with him and maybe he thought that was the expectation.”

Shemesh also read her a portion of her first police statement in September 2024, when she seemed to downplay the incident.

“I was very uncomfortable for a period of time there,” she told police. “I didn’t get, you know, sexually assaulted.”

She quickly clarified what she meant. “Well, I was referring to having any intimate sex with him. That’s what I was referring to.”

And then she was finally done.

A third complainant is expected to testify Wednesday.

Saskatchewan invests additional $1.4 million in gender-based violence programming | Globalnews.ca

The government of Saskatchewan is extending additional support to programming addressing gender-based violence.

Saskatchewan invests additional .4 million in gender-based violence programming | Globalnews.ca

The $1.46 million investment will help 10 organizations and programs across the province and is the latest in funding through the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence program.

“These actions reflect our work to prevent violence before it happens, support survivors, and strengthen communities,” said Alana Ross, Saskatchewan’s status of women minister, at a news conference announcing the funding Tuesday.

The province says the funding will support a range of programs over the next two years — from existing services, such as transition houses and second-stage shelters, to new, innovative ones supporting children and Indigenous communities.

The new funding is also to support group therapy camps for men who have caused harm in intimate partner relationships. These camps are operated by the Rapport Clinical Consulting Group and the Buffalo Narrows Friendship Centre.

“If we want to interrupt the cycle of abuse, we need programming for people who’ve used violence to build skills and change their behaviour,” said Crystal Giesbrecht, director of research at the  Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan (PATHS).

PATHS is receiving $280,000 through the latest funding announcement to support children who have experienced trauma and improve long-term educational outcomes, according to the province. The funding will also be used to provide free online workplace domestic violence training sessions to Saskatchewan businesses.

The Saskatchewan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will receive $250,000 to support pets caught in the middle of domestic abuse.

“Research shows that if there is violence in a home where a human is at risk and there are animals in the household, the animals are likely at risk as well and vice versa,” said John Hourie, executive director of SPCA.

The funding will target the SPCA’s animal safekeeping program, said Hourie, which provides pets with safe, temporary spaces as owners find new homes.

Offering spaces for animals is important as not all domestic violence shelters accept pets, which can often serve as a barrier for those looking to leave situations involving gender-based violence, said Hourie.

“There’s a risk there that their animal may continue being abused. But sometimes one of the big challenges, too, is that there’s just no place to go when you have a pet,” he said.

In 2024, Saskatchewan had the highest rates of police-reported intimate partner violence among all Canadian provinces — reporting 714 incidents per 100,000 people, according to Statistics Canada.

Despite the province being in its fourth year of the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence program, trends in domestic violence data remain steady.

When asked by reporters about this Tuesday, Giesbrecht explained there is often a lag in data.

“When we look at data that comes from Statistics Canada, we’re often looking at data from two years past. So it takes some time for us to see if there are changes, and then also to understand whether those are normal fluctuations or if we’re seeing rates go down,” said Giesbrecht.

Ross said the province does not have updated gender-based violence statistics, but that it has increased its support over the past four years since it has been involved in the program.

The National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence is a 10-year plan intended to provide a framework to end gender-based violence, while supporting victims and their families.

“We’re able to support more women, families, and victims of gender-based violence throughout the province in different avenues,” said Ross.

Other recipients of the latest round of funding include Anchor and Thread Community Services Inc. for counselling and administrative salaries, Regina Transition House for shelter outreach, United Way of Regina for an increased use of the 211 service and Coalition of Regional Sexual Assault Centres Inc. to expand trauma-informed training to police for sexual assault investigations.

Funding will also go towards Sexual Assault Services of Saskatchewan (SASS) to train criminal justice professionals in trauma- and violence-informed cultural safety practices and Muskoday First Nation to support culturally-grounded healing initiatives for women, girls and Two-Spirit+ individuals affected by intimate partner violence, according to the government.

Recipients of the funding are expected to perform check-ins with the province on its programming throughout the year.

Athlete stories can go untold due to fewer journos – National | Globalnews.ca

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO – When Canadian curling coach Scott Pfeifer was a member of the Ferbey Four, the curling team would use the large group of reporters at big bonspiels to fuel rivalries and hype the players and the sport.

Saskatchewan invests additional .4 million in gender-based violence programming | Globalnews.ca

“(We’d be) lobbing bombs across the alley to the other teams,” Pfeifer said with a laugh. “I don’t think you see that as much anymore.”

That’s an understatement.

The Canadian media contingent is not what it used to be at the curling rink or at the Winter Games. It’s even more noticeable this year with the Milan Cortina Games the most spread out in Olympic history.

A thinning journalist presence at major sports events has been a media storyline for years due to shrinking newsroom budgets. The global pandemic made remote coverage the norm and not everyone returned to on-site coverage when the sports world got back to normal.

Story continues below advertisement

In addition to impacting the depth and quality of reporting, fewer on-site journalists means many amateur athletes are unable to share their stories.

“They’re just not going to get that coverage that they got in previous Olympics and that is sad,” USA Today sports columnist Christine Brennan said Tuesday from Milan. “That’s sad because this is their moment.”

There are about 40 accredited Canadian journalists covering the Games across Italy, a Canadian Olympic Committee spokesman said in a direct message.

That’s up slightly from the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, which was an outlier due to the pandemic. Media numbers from the 2018 Pyeongchang Games in South Korea were not available, the COC said.

Brennan, who is covering the Olympics for the 22nd consecutive time, recalls how difficult it was to get near athletes in the mixed zone at previous Games over her career.

“The interview area would just be packed,” she said. “I mean, you’d have to elbow your way in.

“Well there’s none of that here. There’s plenty of room for all of us. And so that is certainly noticeable. That’s a big change.”

Rather than cover the Games in person, some outlets have reporters write stories after watching the competition remotely.

“It’s absolutely essential to be on site,” Brennan said. “Certainly that trend of sports sections and news organizations to have people cover events off TV is incredibly troubling. Although I understand the financial constraints.”

Brennan cited an example from the figure skating last week. When American star Ilia Malinin was preparing to begin his skate, she noticed from her seat in the media tribune how “shockingly nervous” he appeared.

She was able to observe some of the interaction with his coaches that wasn’t shown on the broadcast, she said, adding there was lots of colour to be gathered from the scene after his disappointing performance.

“There’s no way I could have reported on it and given my commentary and my opinions on it had I not been in the arena,” she said.

Rather than traditional media, many competitors instead use social media to build their brand or share their stories. Younger competitors have grown up in the social media age and many use those options to their benefit.

Story continues below advertisement

“Everybody is a storyteller,” said Canadian Secretary of Sport Adam van Koeverden, a four-time Olympian who won kayaking gold in 2004. “I had a blog in 2008 but I don’t think anybody read it though. It wasn’t a viral story. It was like, if I got 25 readers, I think I’d be thrilled.

“Now if you put something on social media, you might get 2,000 likes and 20,000 people looking at it, or more if you’re (freestyle skiing star) Eileen Gu. That media landscape has changed significantly.”

There are great stories to be had all around the Games, but many go untold simply because there are fewer options available to tell them. Another hurdle is travel, since most reporters aren’t moving between hubs due to the long distance.

“Athletes in other years would have received coverage,” Brennan said. “The athletes who are lesser known, are not receiving that coverage now.”

About a four-hour drive northeast of Milan, Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium has been a beehive of activity for the last fortnight with Canada at the centre of the action.

However, there are usually only three Canadian reporters in the press interview area. On some days, one-on-one sessions are available — a rarity at the Games.

“It would be nice to see a lot more in-person coverage rather than just seeing what you see online or what’s conveyed by certain people,” Pfeifer said in a recent interview. “It’s always good to have more people out there giving a more balanced perspective.”

Story continues below advertisement

COC chief executive officer David Shoemaker was asked about the changing media presence at the start of the Games.

“I wish there were more media here in Milan Cortina,” he told reporters. “It’s sort of why I started my remarks by acknowledging the challenges that each of you face, and frankly thanking you for your honest coverage of what we’re doing and what we are trying to do.”

Van Koeverden was a contributor for the CBC at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia and the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

He recalled simply hopping on buses to cover athletes at a wide array of competitions.

“We would plan our day based on where the medal hopefuls were and where the Canadians were,” he said in a recent sit-down chat in Cortina. “But you just can’t hop on a bus and go from Milan to Cortina, or Milan to Val di Fiemme, or over to Livigno.

“I guess that comes with the territory with a more environmentally sustainable Games and a more affordable Games for the organizer. So it’s a lot of changes.”

Poilievre won’t back MP’s claim Canada throwing anti-U.S. ‘hissy fit’ | Globalnews.ca

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Tuesday distanced himself from Jamil Jivani’s claim that Canadians are throwing an “anti-American hissy fit” over U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and sovereignty threats, saying the Conservative MP “speaks for himself.”

Saskatchewan invests additional .4 million in gender-based violence programming | Globalnews.ca

Jivani travelled to Washington earlier this month to meet with his college friend, Vice President JD Vance, and other Trump administration officials in what he described as an attempt to “build bridges” between Canada and the U.S.

After he returned to Canada, Jivani told U.S. right-wing news site Breitbart that Canadians would be “shooting ourselves in the foot if we continue this anti-America hissy fit” and urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to work with him and the White House on resolving the trade dispute.

Poilievre told reporters in Ottawa he has spoken to Jivani about his trip and subsequent comments.

“My message (to him) is that Canadians are understandably upset about the tariffs and the comments that President Trump has made, and that we need to focus on what we can do here at home,” he said.

“He speaks for himself, and I speak for the party.”

Jivani represents a central Ontario riding that Poilievre acknowledged has been “disproportionately impacted” by Trump’s auto tariffs. The riding includes parts of Oshawa, home to General Motors’ assembly plant that recently cut a shift and laid off some 500 employees — a move expected to affect upward of a thousand workers across the supply chain.

“I think that it’s necessary for all MPs to use all the connections and work that they can in order to overturn the tariffs and protect Canadian jobs,” Poilievre said. “So I encourage all MPs to fight the tariffs and stand up for Canada.”

Global News reported earlier this month that some member of the Conservative caucus were upset with what they viewed as Jivani’s “freelance” diplomacy with the Trump administration.

It’s also not clear if Jivani’s trip was sanctioned by Poilievre’s office, which has not responded to questions about his U.S. travels.

Jivani is not the party’s “shadow minister” for foreign affairs, international trade or Canada-U.S. trade.

Jivani said earlier this month he had “productive” meetings with Trump’s administration. He said on social media that he met with representatives of the White House and U.S. State Department and that the president asked him to pass along a message — to tell Canadians he loves them.

In a video posted to social media, Jivani said he expects criticism from “frothing, elbow-waving anti-American activists” but he thinks Canadians want someone willing to “cut through all the posturing” to deliver results.

He later described his meetings with American officials and lawmakers as “very productive, promising and positive.”

“I’m feeling hopeful and optimistic that we can get something really good done for Canadian workers and businesses,” he said. “Might take some time, but I really believe that the doors are open here.”

That later video came days before Trump threatened to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Ontario and Michigan in a social media post that complained about Canada treating the U.S. unfairly on trade and other issues.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters Tuesday he was happy to see Jivani go to the U.S. but that he disagreed with his recent comments.

“I don’t call it a hissy fit,” Ford said. “What I call (it) is making sure that we communicate with the American people.

“No one would even know who Jamil Jivani was unless I hired the guy in my office,” Ford added, referring to the fact that Jivani once worked as an adviser to his government. “I didn’t know him from a hole in the ground.”

Saskatchewan, tire recycling company reach $4.8M settlement | Globalnews.ca

Saskatchewan’s government says it has reached a $4.8-million settlement with a tire recycling company.

The province says it agreed to pay the amount to Saskatoon-based Shercom Industries and that the company has accepted the arrangement.

Shercom filed a lawsuit in November 2024 alleging the province had breached its contract with the company.

The company argued that the province’s plan to allow additional processors breached its commitment to Shercom, which had been Saskatchewan’s sole tire recycler.

Shercom laid off employees due to lost business after the province hired U.S.-based Crumb Rubber Manufacturing to recycle tires in Moose Jaw.

The province says the settlement is not an admission of liability and that other details of the arrangement are confidential.

In a statement Tuesday, it said the settlement is “believed to be in the best interests” of Saskatchewan residents and the tire recycling industry.Saskat

Bank of Canada orders tip manager XTM to halt payments as B.C. restaurants’ money missing | Globalnews.ca

The Bank of Canada announced on Tuesday that it has issued a temporary order to XTM Inc. to immediately cease performing any retail payment activities.

Saskatchewan invests additional .4 million in gender-based violence programming | Globalnews.ca

This comes after more people in the hospitality industry across B.C. are coming forward about tips disappearing from the third-party program that manages them.

XTM provides a payment service for restaurant owners to gather and distribute tips to staff using pre-paid cards through a platform called Everyday, previously called AnyDay.

In early February, members of B.C.’s hospitality industry started reporting that the company stopped distributing money and some were missing thousands of dollars.

Eric Griffith, owner of Alta Bistro and Alpha Cafe in Whistler, told Global News they were missing $4,500.

Matthew Upton, one of the owners of The Broken Seal restaurant in Squamish, told Global News they are missing $12,000.

Dan Webster with Container Brewing in East Vancouver said they are missing $3,100.

The Bank of Canada said in a statement that the order applies to XTM and its affiliated entities and “prohibits XTM or its affiliates from conducting any transactions or withdrawals from accounts associated with the AnyDay platform.

“The Bank issued this order under section 94 (4) of the Retail Payment Activities Act (RPAA). The Bank has serious concerns that XTM failed to safeguard client funds in its possession and has reason to believe that allowing XTM to continue to perform retail payment activities could be prejudicial to the public’s interest.”

CEO of Toronto-based XTM, Marilyn Schaffer, did not answer multiple emails from Global News last week about what happened to the funds from the B.C. restaurants and when merchants might get their money back.

Calgary has been hit with hazardous winter conditions, prompting Environment Canada to issue a yellow warning on Tuesday morning.

Much of Alberta is expected to be blanketed by between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow, with up to 40 centimetres possible in some areas, particularly in east-central Alberta, according to the agency. Snowfall began Monday and is expected to end Tuesday evening.

Environment Canada says strong winds with gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour can lead to very poor visibility. The agency says people in the affected area can expect visibility to be reduced to near-zero at times and potentially force the closure of roads.

Environment Canada recommends that people in the area consider postponing any non-essential travel and outdoor activities, and to avoid strain when clearing snow.

Snow returns to Calgary after weeks of warm weather

The weeks of warm winter weather have come to an end in Calgary, where 15 centimetres is expected to fall by Tuesday evening. CBC’s Jo Horwood has the forecast and details on how the city is handling the fresh snow.

The Calgary International Airport says flight delays can be expected due to the poor weather conditions, and that some flights have been cancelled. It did not provide exact numbers.

The McKnight Boulevard N.E. exit ramps to southbound and northbound Deerfoot Trail were closed around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday “due to jackknifed semis,” according to Calgary police.

Chris Hewitt with the City of Calgary says crews have been out clearing snow since Monday evening, and that drivers can still expect winter driving conditions on their evening commute.

Calgary police say 68 collisions were reported from midnight to 12 p.m. Tuesday. Seven of those involved injuries, while nine were classified as hit-and-runs.
