A Cape Breton Regional Police officer has been charged with assault in relation to an alleged incident in November.

In a news release, Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team said Const. Charles Maurice Bourgeois was charged Thursday in connection with an alleged altercation that occurred while he was off-duty on the night of Nov. 28, 2025.

According to an earlier news release, an altercation broke out at a craft beer festival in Sydney when an off-duty officer was speaking to another man. The other man was taken to hospital for treatment of head injuries.

Bourgeois is scheduled to appear in Sydney provincial court on May 1.
