Wizards’ Young recovering, Davis still not cleared for practice

The Wizards’ new All-Stars aren’t making their Washington debut any time soon. The franchise said Thursday that Anthony Davis and Trae Young, who the team traded for earlier this year, would remain sidelined with injuries.
Young has “progressed positively,” Wizards officials said. The four-time All-Star guard will continue participating in practices before being reevaluated next week. A knee strain and a quad contusion have kept him sidelined.
Davis, a 10-time All-Star, “is progressing as expected,” according to the Wizards. The No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft is dealing with ligament damage in his left hand. He has not been cleared to practice and will be reevaluated in two weeks.
The Wizards are in no rush to see the two trade acquisitions return. The team needs to finish as one of the eight worst teams in the NBA to guarantee that they will keep their first-round draft choice. If the Wizards make a successful push toward the league’s play-in tournament, the first-rounder could convey to the New York Knicks due to an earlier trade and protections.
The 14-39 Wizards, who play their first game since the All-Star break on Thursday night, hold the second-worst record in the NBA.
