A small fire at a church in Winnipeg’s Osborne Village area Thursday morning is now under investigation, city officials say.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service ( WFPS) responded to the blaze in the Augustine United Church on River Avenue at about 7 a.m., the city said in an email.

A sprinkler system had extinguished a garbage fire by the time first responders arrived, the city said. There were no injuries reported.

Housing and shelter services non-profit 1JustCity runs a drop-in centre at the church, which also hosts the Oak Table health and wellness programs.

1JustCity executive director Craig Wynands said in a statement Thursday the Augustine site was closed for the day, with community members redirected to its other drop-in sites for support.

The extent of the damage is still being assessed, with further programming information to be provided as it becomes available, Wynands said.

Winnipeg police said Thursday there is no threat to public safety. Police and WFPS are investigating.
