Leeds taunts that sparked Pep Guardiola response when Man City won

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola turned to the home fans when the final whistle went at Elland Road

Pep Guardiola turned round to celebrate in front of the Leeds fans after being subjected to taunts during Manchester City’s win over Leeds. The City boss said ‘w*****, w*****’ had been chanted at him by home supporters behind the dugout but suggested that his theatrical waves to the crowd at full-time were meant for his family rather than sarcastically responding to the home supporters.

Those scenes were part of a chaotic end to the game, with Daniel Farke racing onto the pitch to confront the officials over the lack of added time. He was sent off, with his assistant suggesting that the referee should have recognised the emotional nature of the game and only given out a yellow card..

Guardiola then had to play peacemaker after Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias appeared to be involved in angry altercations with Leeds players after the game. As everyone settled down, the City manager was left to reflect on a ‘huge victory’ that takes them to within two points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

“It was. Erling is a massively important player for us but we behaved really well,” he said. “My idea of the game: They started really well, we expect it here. Leeds is so intense. After that we did what we are good at for the last decade, we are together, a thousand million passes to make the vibe of the crowd a little bit more calm and make them run and run.

“We missed a little bit more intention up front to make more movements but when they got fatigued we had more intention in the last 15-20 minutes of the first half to try to score a goal. We found it. We drop in the second half normally but it didn’t happen today, we were incredibly focused in all departments and we didn’t create much but we didn’t concede anything.

“It was long balls where we struggled with Calvert-Lewin and Nmecha and it was more uncomfortable but we defended really well for a huge victory for us.”
