A Green MP has slammed Keir Starmer for making “Trumpian” remarks after the prime minister accused the rival party of pushing “dangerous” policies.
Speaking to the Observer, the prime minister said: “They’re anti-Nato at a time when the world is more volatile than it has ever been.”
Green Party leader Zack Polanski has previously called the Nato policy “out of date” because of Donald Trump’s involvement, although in October he said he was not calling for the UK to leave the defence alliance right now.
Starmer also claimed: “The Green party thinks it’s all right to sell drugs and there should be no restrictions.
“So somebody could sell drugs outside my children’s school but, if you’re a landlord, it should be unlawful. That’s nuts. They’re dangerous.”
Polanski backs the legalisation of all drugs and has called for an approach which is “led by public health experts not politicians”.
The Greens also officially adopted a new policy to “abolish landlords” after members voted on the plan at a party conference in Bournemouth in October.
The party was quick to fire back at Starmer’s attacks.
Polanski wrote on social media: “Starmer says he’s ‘taking the gloves off’ and that the Greens are ‘nuts’.
“Big talk from the PM of vibes based cruelty and trickle down cowardice.”
In a post on X, Green MP Sian Berry said: “I see the PM is being very rattled and very untruthful about the Greens again in the papers.
“He couldn’t say this stuff in Parliament because he would be lying to the House – both about what our popular, evidence-based policies are, and about him believing this guff. Trumpian.”
Labour has stepped up its attacks on the Greens in recent months as the party has become significantly more popular under Polanski’s leadership.
Now with more than 170,000 members, the party is also surging in the polls – one YouGov survey from October on 16% to the Tories and Labour’s 17%.
