After pledging to ban single-use plastics in 2019 while he was prime minister, Trudeau was spotted at Coachella in California with paramour pop star Katy Perry, drinking out of plastic cups.

The photo sparked mockery on social media, with Canada Proud’s X feed posting the shot with the words: “How would you caption this?”

“Those aren’t juice box water bottle thingys,” commented one user.

“Sorry but I don’t want to be reminded of this village idiot,” wrote another.

Some fans were supportive, with one Instagram commenter writing on Perry’s Instagram, “Seeing you with your boyfriend, Justin Trudeau, not only makes me believe in love, but also that a couple can be a perfect match. You and Justin are such a fun couple and I love that neither one of you takes yourselves too seriously or cares what haters have to say.”

The pair were at the music festival to see Justin Bieber’s headline performance, with Perry posting the caption “heat-checkin’ these chickens,” a lyric from Bieber’s song Speed Demon.

High-profile relationship

Trudeau, 53, and Perry, 41, have been an item since at least last December when Perry shared an Instagram post while travelling with Trudeau in Japan, though they were linked in the summer when media reported a romantic outing in Montreal.

The couple frequently documents their relationship on social media, often to the exasperation of Canadians who were glad to finally see the back of Trudeau when he stepped down as prime minister in January of 2025 amid  mounting political pressure to do so.

Trudeau was married for 18 years to Sophie Grégoire until their separation in 2023. He shares three children with her. Perry was with actor Orlando Bloom for nine years before announcing their split last July. They share custody of their five-year-old daughter Daisy Dove.
