‘The Boys’ Season 4 Recap: Everything you need to know before that bloody Season 5 premiere

The Boys returns for its fifth and final season almost two long years after that brutal Season 4 finale placed Homelander at the helm of the United States of America.

This season, it’s clear Butcher and The Boys are coming back with a vengeance. But they’ll have their work cut out for them after Season 4 saw the President of the United States declare martial law and deputize the nation’s Supes.

The Season 5 synopsis promises major drama: “In the fifth and final season, it’s Homelander’s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims. Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie are imprisoned in a “Freedom Camp.”  Annie struggles to mount a resistance against the overwhelming Supe force. Kimiko is nowhere to be found. But when Butcher reappears, ready and willing to use a virus that will wipe all Supes off the map, he sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change the world and everyone in it.  It’s the climax, people. Big stuff’s gonna happen.”

The Boys Season 4 was arguably one of the show’s strongest seasons so far. Keep reading to learn more about what happened last season to jog your memory before the new episodes premiere later this week.

The Boys Season 4 finale showed Frenchie racing against the clock to develop the virus, while the U.S. House of Representatives is certifying the election vote to decide once and for all if Singer, who has been running a campaign that was hard on Supes, is going to become president. Meanwhile, Hughie has been unknowingly shacking up with a shifter posing as Annie. You would think he would notice his girlfriend is acting weird, but he only begins to notice her strange behavior after they’ve already proposed to each other and slept together.

Homelander originally planned to infiltrate Singer’s presidency with the help of his VP, Victoria Neuman, who has spent her entire life hiding her super abilities. But that plan also gets derailed when Homelander spontaneously outs her on Firecracker’s live Vought News show. Singer publicly denounces Neuman, but Homelander makes it clear that he plans to get rid of Singer and make her the first “super-abled president.” The reality of the situation begins to dawn on Victoria when Homelander repeatedly threatens her daughter Zoe in order to keep her in line.

Meanwhile, Butcher is getting treated for his “super cancer” in a government safe house where he’s being plagued by visions of Kessler (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). He convinces Ryan, who is still living with Homelander, to visit him but it doesn’t go according to plan. Mallory tells Ryan the truth about Homelander – about Flight 37, about how he was conceived – in a last-ditch effort to get him to join their side. Ryan becomes angry when he realizes Homelander and Mallory lured him here to trap him and convince him to kill his own father, leading him to kill Mallory in a fit of rage.

After Singer gets elected, The Boys spring into action. Mother’s Milk tells Hughie to leak all of the dirt he had on Victoria, but Hughie realizes all of their blackmail material has been deleted (by the Shifter, though he still doesn’t realize she’s posing as Annie.) Since they don’t have the virus yet or any dirt to use against Neuman and Homelander, Mother’s Milk decides to get newly elected President Singer in a protected bunker with Secret Service.

Back at Vought, Homelander orders Noir, Firecracker and The Deep to kill every Vought employee named on a list Ashley compiled that includes every Vought employee who could have dirt on The Seven. But when The Deep suggests Ashley should also be on the list, Homelander gives him the green light. She runs to Homelander’s room and injects herself with compound V in a desperate attempt to save her own life as Firecracker, The Deep and Noir go on a murder spree through Vought Tower.

Hughie realizes the Shifter has been posing as Annie this entire time – but it’s too late. They’re already locked inside a bunker with the president of the United Sates, Singer. The Shifter goes for Singer but she’ll have to get through Kimiko first, who puts up a brutal fight until Annie finally appears to save the day. But The Boys’ effort to keep Singer alive is for naught.

Victoria finally has a change of heart and reaches out to Hughie. She wants to join The Boys, after all. The Boys don’t know whether to trust her at first, but it doesn’t matter. Butcher reappears in a violent haze after losing Ryan again and kills her using his powers.

Back at Vought Tower, Sister Sage reveals this was all part of her plan; Singer has been arrested, which means Speaker of the House Calhoun will be appointed president. They never needed Victoria after all. Calhoun has already pledged allegiance to Homelander. The Season ends on a somber note: Calhoun declares martial law in the United States and deputized superheroes nationwide to report to Homelander himself.

Homelander pins Victoria’s murder on the Starlighters and promises, “America will be safe again. … A new age of superheroes begins.” The season ends just as The Boys get captured by U.S. forces.
