The trailer of Netflix’s ‘Untold: Chess Mates’ came out on Tuesday, March 10 as details of the much-awaited documentary based on the infamous cheating scandal of 2022 were revealed. The docuseries will premiere on the platform on April 7, 2026.

The ‘Untold’ documentary series is known for covering the most fascinating stories in sports and chess fans were eagerly waiting for the release of ‘Chess Mates’ which will cover one of the biggest controversies in chess history in recent memory.

The trailer delves deep into the allegations of cheating against the American Grandmaster Hans Niemann who dramatically defeated world number one Magnus Carlsen in 2022  at the Sinquefield Cup. The trailer shows Niemann, among the stronger chess players now, fighting against these allegations.

What was the Niemann cheating scandal?

During the Sinquefield Cup in September 2022, Niemann defeated Carlsen who was the then world champion. Carlsen abruptly withdrew from the tournament following that loss. Carlsen said he suspected that Niemann was cheating. In their next match, which was online, Carlsen resigned after just one move. It became a huge controversy as Niemann was removed from Chess.com platform. He admitted to cheating earlier in his career but not when he was accused.

The controversy shook the world and the trailer takes the fans into the details of the row that is considered among the biggest scandals in the game in decades.

“My entire life and career has been destroyed,” Niemann says right at the start of the trailer. “And I’ll have to live the fact that every conversation I have about chess, we’ll eventually discuss anal beads.”

Pushing the stakes further up, Carlsen in his first statement says: “I felt that I was not playing a human.”

The first lines of both the stars set up an intriguing base for the 71-second clip. The trailer then shows Niemann calling Carlsen paranoid as the world number one goes on boast: “When I sit on the board, I know I am better than the other guy.”
