Thirty years after it first aired, This Life will return to the BBC for a whole new generation to enjoy this 90s cult classic.

The era-defining British series – created by Amy Jenkins – starred an early-career Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead) as well as Daniela Nardini, Jack Davenport, Amita Dhiri and Jason Hughes.

The quintet played a group of twenty-something lawyers sharing a house in south London ‘as they navigated friendship, ambition and the complexities of their twenties.’

Or, as the synopsis dubbing it ‘raw, real and revolutionary’ reads: ‘The 90s’ most famous houseshare. Five aspiring lawyers are aiming for the top – but behind the scenes, they’re a mess of love, drugs and excess.’

Hailed a ‘landmark drama’ with ‘fresh, raw and unfiltered performances’, it became the ‘defining series of the decade’ and a time capsule of London life during this time.

Behind the scenes, the show was also a fertile training ground for Britain’s up-and-coming directors, such as I May Destroy You’s Bafta-winning director Sam Miller and Harry Bradbeer (director behind hits like Fleabag and Enola Holmes).

The 32-episode rerun, offering a trip down memory lane, will be introduced by Daniela.

Fans and critics alike have praised its impact as a cultural touchstone and enduring legacy – despite its short time on screens.

Metro called it ‘the greatest drama of the 90s’, adding ‘no other TV series managed to capture the Cool Britannia zeitgeist as brilliantly as This Life’.

In a 2021 review, The Guardian wrote: ‘It was the sort of television where you wanted to contact all your friends immediately after watching an episode to recap it. It was funny but it also broke your heart.

‘It felt freakishly true to life. It depicted all the messiness and glory of being in your 20s in a way that you never usually see on commercial television.’

And in a review fresh after its release in 1996, The Independent shared: ‘What keeps you watching, in the absence of much discernible forward motion, is a quality of observation – the dialogue, apart from the odd passage here and there, continues to have an eavesdropped quality.’

The show has been praised for its diverse storylines, such as gay character Warren, who is grappling with his identity and discussions around interracial couples.

Over on IMDB, user shootingstar82 wrote: ‘While there are a couple of moments where This Life feels a little dated, overall, it holds up very well and is still immensely watchable.

‘This is one of the truly great British TV shows which I look forward to viewing again at some point in the future.’

‘A near-perfect study of life’s transitional period between careless partying and responsible adulthood,’ ideorio shared.

Discussing its unexpected popularity, and what drew him to the show in 2020, Miles actor Jack shared with The Guardian: ‘The writing was really different from most television. If you took a load of drugs, you didn’t necessarily die immediately.

‘If you had unprotected sex, you didn’t automatically become HIV positive. People liked it because there was no moralising. If you’re 22, you’re going to make some really bad decisions, but that’s OK. Relax.’

This Life returns to BBC Four at 10pm on Wednesday, March 18. Seasons one and two, as well as the 10-year reunion, will be available from iPlayer from 6am.

Rich House, Poor House mum from Cambridgeshire moved by millionaire’s help

A Cambridgeshire single mum featured on the Channel 5 show with her daughters

A single mother was moved to tears when she was presented with a family holiday and a significant career boost on TV programme, Rich House, Poor House.

Katie participated in the show alongside her two daughters, as they swapped homes – and lives – with an affluent Norfolk family for a week.

The family, who had been facing financial difficulties and occasionally relied on a food bank when funds were low, vacated their three-bedroom Cambridgeshire home to reside in Matt and Danni’s £1.2 million Norfolk residence.

The families exchanged budgets, with Matt and Danni, parents of three who operate a luxury mattress and bedding business, subsisting on Katie’s weekly budget of £82.61 after bills. Meanwhile, Katie and her daughters Shelby and Dixie were given £1,900 spending money for the week.

During the poignant episode, which aired on Sunday (March 15), Katie revealed that she was juggling four part-time jobs, including caring for her father Ted, who suffers from heart failure and is both deaf and diabetic, reports Wales Online.

She also had plans to establish her own second-hand clothing business, specialising in plus-size attire, with the assistance of her mother Rosemary.

“It’s hard work trying to juggle earning a living and being a mum at the same time,” she said. “I’ve been using a food bank just to top up some shopping when I can’t afford it,” she added.

The programme showed Katie’s family experiencing the high life, being able to spend freely on takeaways and designer clothing. In contrast, Matt and Danni found themselves staying in and enjoying board games with their children as they lacked the funds to venture out.

The pair also carried out some maintenance work at Katie’s home, hanging a curtain at her bedroom window and painting the wooden staircase, which had remained unfinished as Katie couldn’t afford to decorate.

When the life swap concluded, the families met face to face for the first time. Following a discussion about their experiences, Matt and Danni expressed their desire to support Katie and her daughters Shelby and Dixie.

Katie appeared visibly moved as Danni told her: “So we thought that it would be nice to pay for a family holiday for you guys on the Norfolk Broads on a boat for a week. You guys, and Ted and Rosemary as well, so that you can all be together.”

Matt added: “And also something that we’d like to do as well is help you with the business since you’ve already made such a great start. We would like to put £500 in for initial stock just to get up and running and going. And what you do need to do is focus your attention. So we’ve basically drawn a five year plan. And I think within a year, you can certainly be giving all the other jobs up, you know, except you sort of care for your dad and stuff. But I think the business, if it all goes to plan on here, you could probably generate a £77,000 profit out of the business every year.”

Katie appeared emotional as she expressed her delight that Matt could recognise the promise in her concept.

“I’m really excited about my business now,” she said. “Matt’s given me lots of ideas. I can’t believe he has worked out a five-year plan.”

Kieran McCartney, who’s competing on the current series of The Apprentice, has opened up about his mental health struggles, revealing that he was spending £500-a-week on cocaine.

The entrepreneur has shared in a new interview that he was ‘in a bad way’ and was ‘suicidal’ after his dad’s death, but that he’s now ‘in a good place’.

The 20th series of The Apprentice, led by business magnate Lord Alan Sugar, began airing in January this year.

McCartney, 26, is one of the final 10 candidates still in the running to secure a business partnership with Lord Sugar.

The estate agent, who runs an estate agency called McCartney & Partners Estate Agents in London and Essex, won the first task as project manager in the first episode.

In a new interview with The Sun, he spoke about his previous drug use, revealing that he began taking drugs after his dad died in 2022, aged 43.

‘When my dad died, I was quite depressed. I was in a bad way. I kind of turned to drink, drugs. I was a bit suicidal,’ he told the publication. ‘I went off the rails for about six months.’

McCartney revealed that he was spending around £500 a week on cocaine, and emphasised that he didn’t take drugs while filming The Apprentice.

He told the newspaper that he would contact cocaine dealers from his company’s work phone before and after he competed on the BBC programme.

‘The Apprentice was an amazing experience — mentally very stressful. But I’m in a good place now. It didn’t even cross my mind once. I would have loved a beer, absolutely. It was summertime. It was hot,’ he shared.

‘But drugs? No. Definitely not. I had about 200 cigarettes on me when I went into the house. That was it.’

Following the publication of the interview, McCartney shared a video on his Instagram Story, saying: ‘I’m glad you all get to see my side of the story, I think that’s the main thing. I’m in a better place now.

‘So, don’t worry, love you all, thank you for all the lovely messages, let’s keep going. The sun’s out, go and have a beer, it’s gorgeous.’

Strictly star demands BBC rest the show so it can ‘go back to basics’

Strictly star demands BBC rest the show so it can ‘go back to basics’
They’ve known the show for nearly 20 years (Picture: Pa)

A Strictly Come Dancing star has suggested that the BBC take their beloved show off air for a year to ‘think about what we can do differently’.

The dance competition is undergoing a lot of change, with hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly announcing their shock departure and some long-standing professionals reportedly being axed from the show.

It’s now been on our screens for over 20 years, and continues to draw in big audiences.

But one former pro, who joined the show over fifteen years ago has some advice for the broadcaster.

Kristina Rihanoff, 48, told The Independent: ‘If I were a producer, I would give it a rest for a year, regroup and think about what we can do differently.’

She went on: ‘There’s something to say about going back to basics and back to its roots – the roots of the show were pure ballroom and Latin dancing without the razzmatazz of 101 props and 3D projections.

‘When I came onto the show, it was about ballroom and Latin dancing. It was minimum props, all the group dances were live.

‘The professionals were choreographing it and the celebrities had to learn proper ballroom and Latin dancing. It would not do any harm to go back to the good old-fashioned [ways].’

Back in 2008, when Kristina joined the show, she was partnered with John Sergeant, who secured the popular vote despite scoring poorly with the judges.

Kristina stayed on the show for seven more seasons and danced with the likes of actor Jason Donovan, singer Simon Webbe, and rugby star Ben Cohen – who later became her romantic partner and the father of her child.

She left in 2015, after dancing with TV host Daniel O’Donnell – the pair became the third couple to be eliminated from the competition.

Amid the supposed bloodbath happening at Strictly HQ, with few professional dancers seemingly safe from being axed, Kristina shared with The Independent that this isn’t anything new.

Explaining the situation in more detail, she said that professionals are only ever contracted for 12 months, meaning that the period leading up to potential contract renewal could be an excruciating one.

Kristina said: ‘You never know who is in jeopardy or if they’re going to renew your contract. It’s not a very nice feeling and obviously, on a lot of dancers, it has a big mental health effect.’

A BBC spokesperson told Metro that ‘plans for Strictly Come Dancing 2026 will be confirmed in due course’.

Metro has contacted BBC for comment.

BBC drama fans say is ‘TV at its best’ now on Netflix

One of the best BBC dramas of the late 2010s has just had all three seasons added to Netflix

Netflix is now streaming a three-season BBC drama that has left viewers feeling inspired. Featuring some very recognisable faces from British television and addressing difficult subjects with care and sensitivity, The A Word deserves a place at the very top of your watchlist.

Breakout star Max Vento portrays Joe Hughes, a young boy whose troubled family discovers he has autism. Initially believing he simply has hearing problems, parents Paul (played by Lee Ingleby) and Alison (Morven Christie) must learn to cope with Joe’s communication difficulties.

Meanwhile, Alison’s brother Eddie (Greg McHugh) and his wife Nicola (Vinette Robinson) are experiencing troubles of their own, whilst Joe’s grandfather Maurice (Christopher Eccleston), a widower with a rather forthright view of the world, must learn to adapt to the changes in his family, reports the Mirror.

Shot around the Lake District, the drama’s impressive cast also features other well-known faces, such as Death in Paradise’s Ralph Little, Inspector Morse icon Clare Holman, and Coronation Street’s Julie Hesmondhalgh.

Rising star Aaron Pierre, who will next be seen in HBO’s DC superhero series Lanterns and led Netflix’s hit thriller Rebel Ridge, also makes an appearance in The A Word’s second season.

Fans have been raving about the popular BBC series even after it came to an end in 2020, so it is certainly not one to miss now it’s become even more widely available on Netflix. One viewer on IMDb hailed the first series as the “Best Program on TV” apart from Game of Thrones.

They enthused in a 10/10 review: “There are not enough dramas featuring this issue, and the lad who plays Joe needs recognition for how well he plays the part – true to life.

“From the start of this program, to the end, it has had me in tears due to how it mirrors my family’s life – with a child who is Autistic, going through the diagnosis, coping with relatives and friends’ views on this. And the strain it places on your relationships is very well portrayed.”

Another viewer described it as “The best drama I’ve ever seen”. They continued: “I have just binge watched the three series over the past few days. Couldn’t stop watching it. It was so well acted by all. So believable.”

“Wonderful show beautifully portraying a tough topic,” someone else commented.

“Amazing show, portrays Autism Spectrum Disorder really well,” they continued. “The child playing Joe is brilliant, his acting is so authentic. The entire cast does a wonderful job getting down to the root of emotions that follow a ASD diagnosis.

“The dry humour and authentic setting really draws in the viewer. Such a welcome contrast to the bright shiny TV Hollywood pumps out, this show is television at its best.”

A final viewer remarked: “A must watch for every family. The series is very interesting and I believe that every family should watch it because there is lots to learn. I enjoy each and every moment of the drama. I am really thankful to all the people who have made this possible.”

Whether you want to learn more about autism or are simply looking for a gripping new drama for your next viewing session, Netflix has the perfect series for you with this show.

Kelly Clarkson reveals ‘lying’ ‘American Idol’ stiffed her on $1 million prize, new car

Kelly Clarkson accused “American Idol” of “lying” about the $1 million check that she was supposed to receive after becoming the singing competition’s very first winner.

The 43-year-old “Since U Been Gone” songstress made the bombshell claim during Tuesday’s episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” where she was joined by “Harry Potter” actor Daniel Radcliffe and reality star Rob Rausch.

Clarkson brought up the topic while discussing Rausch’s $220,800 winnings from Season 4 of “The Traitors” — which he revealed he still hasn’t received.

“You know what, I relate to this!” Clarkson said. “I relate to this so hardcore. You probably weren’t alive when I was on ‘American Idol,’ but I was literally on the show.”

The “Breakaway” singer claimed the show’s promises didn’t match what she actually got.

“They were like, ‘Oh, you win a million dollars,’ or whatever,” Clarkson said. “No, you didn’t. They lied. It was like a million dollars’ worth of investment in you.”

Radcliffe looked stunned and cut in: “Wait, what?”

“Yes!” Clarkson insisted, adding that she also never received another major prize she thought she had won.

“They said you get a car,” she explained. “And I needed it because my car was bashed in, and I couldn’t afford the deductible. And then — no! I did not get a car.”

Clarkson then claimed that Clay Aiken, who finished runner-up on the show’s second season, did end up getting a car.

“Clay Aiken, who didn’t win the second season, got a car — and [so did] his mom!” she told the audience as the crowd erupted in disbelief.

“I was like, ‘What the f–k!’” Clarkson added, recalling a conversation with the singer at the time. “He’s like, ‘Yeah, they gave my mom one.’ I was like, ‘I’m gonna actually kick your ass right now.’”

Radcliffe joked that early winners of a show should receive upgraded prizes if the rewards improve later.

“There should be some system where if you win something on the first season of something, whatever the prize has become, you should retroactively get that,” he said.

Clarkson pushed back, insisting the rewards had already been promised at the time.

“No, it was supposed to be the prize then, OK? It was supposed to be the prize then!” she said.

She then jokingly warned Rausch he might also be waiting a while for his payout.

“That’s why I’m saying — you might not see it,” Clarkson quipped. “But, you know, I hope you got enough TV time.”

Clarkson famously won the inaugural season of “American Idol” in 2002, launching a chart-topping career with hits including “A Moment Like This,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” and “Because of You.”

In September, the singer reflected on the 23rd anniversary of her win, thanking fans who voted for her during the show’s early days.

“Winning ‘American Idol’ changed my life and I will be forever grateful for all of you that have supported me for so many years,” she wrote on social media.

She added, “It is a gift to find your purpose and passion, and to be able to make a living doing it is the cherry on top. Thank you, always.”

The candid comments come shortly after Clarkson announced she would be stepping away from her NBC daytime talk show after seven seasons to spend more time with her children, River, 11, and Remington, 9.

Her decision followed a difficult year after the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, who died in August following a battle with cancer.

Amazon hours from dropping ‘chilling’ Nicole Kidman serial killer thriller

The hardest-working woman in TV has another credit to add to her IMDb this week.

There are four new Nicole Kidman dramas coming in 2026 and the first arrives on Amazon Prime Video tomorrow.

Based on Patricia Cornwell’s series of novels about a criminal pathologist who brings plenty of baggage to the job, Scarpetta stars Kidman as the woman in question.

Dr Kay Scarpetta has a reputation in the world of forensics, but the grind of performing one autopsy after another is (understandably) getting to her. Just as she’s returned to take on the chief medical examiner spot for Virginia.

From the writer behind episodes of Lost and Barry, the show weaves back and forth between two timelines, in the present day with Kidman playing newly-returned Dr Scarpetta, and her younger, scrappy self in the 1990s, where the pathologist is played by Rosy McEwen.

Elsewhere on the starry cast, we have fellow screen icon Jamie Lee Curtis as Kay’s sardonic sister Dorothy (JLC doesn’t really look like a Dorothy, but ignore that), The Mentalist lead Simon Baker, Bafta’s rap star extraordinaire Ariana DeBose and owner of a new bearded dragon Bobby Cannavale.

Scarpetta Scarpetta brings Patricia Cornwell's iconic literary character to life in a gripping series starring Nicole Kidman as ?Dr. Kay Scarpetta.? With skilled hands and an unnerving eye, this unrelenting medical examiner is determined to serve as the voice of the victims, unmask a serial killer, and prove that her career-making case from 28 years prior isn't also her undoing. Set against the backdrop of modern forensic investigation, the series delves beyond the crime scene to explore the psychological complexities of both perpetrators and investigators, creating a multi-layered thriller that examines the toll of pursuing justice at all costs.

In the present-day timeline for the eight-parter, Dr Scarpetta is investigating a particularly gruesome set of murders, which look like the work of a serial killer and even bear freakish similarities to a case from the start of her career.

As the thriller’s trailer teases, ‘The case that made her could break her.’

The official Amazon synopsis of the show described the eight-parter as ‘chilling’, writing: ‘With skilled hands and an unnerving eye, this unrelenting medical examiner is determined to serve as the voice of the victims, unmask a serial killer, and prove that her career-making case from 28 years prior isn’t also her undoing.

What other shows can I watch on Amazon Prime?

  • The Paradise. The show follows the lives and relationships of those who shop and trade in and around England’s first-ever department store.
  • Young Sherlock. Guy Ritchie’s highly anticipated new series is about Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved literary detective.
  • Outlander. The period drama’s time-travelling final season arrives.

‘As Scarpetta pursues justice, she must navigate complicated relationships, including the fraught dynamic with her sister, confront long-held professional and personal grudges, and face secrets that threaten to unravel everything she’s built.’

Does Scarpetta sound like one for you?

Kidman is never one to do jobs in half measures, so it might come as no surprise that to prepare for the part of Dr Scarpetta, she learned to conduct an actual autopsy.

Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on his talk show, she shared: ‘If I needed to, I could do the autopsy. I can remove all the organs. I can name them all.

‘I can remove the lungs, the liver and the gallbladder and the intestines.’

‘I worked with an incredible medical examiner, and I studied him,’ she revealed.

Scarpetta launches on Amazon Prime from March 11.

Andy Cohen was told that Mary Cosby’s memorial for her late son, Robert Jr., was “rapturous.”

The “Watch What Happens Live” host, who could not attend the funeral, said he got a “full report” of the services from other Bravolebrities who showed up to support Cosby.

“I had so many things to do with the kids this weekend, a lot of commitments, which is why I actually was not able to go to Robert Jr’.s service on Saturday in Salt Lake City,” Cohen, who is dad to kids Ben, 7, and Lucy, 3, said on his SiriusXM show, “Radio Andy Live,” Monday.

“I got a full report, though, and I hear it was an absolutely incredible ceremony,” he added.

The Bravo boss said the cast and production team for “RHOSLC” were present, along with other “Housewives” such as Cynthia Bailey, Sheree Whitfield, and Kyle Richards.

“I love it that they went,” the TV host, 57, added. “I think that is so kind. They are real ones, those three.”

Cohen said he heard the service was “so uplifting and so moving and absolutely, kind of, rapturous.”

“And Mary was on one, I mean, in a spiritual way. She was spiritually on one, let me say that,” he revealed.

Cohen said Richards informed him that Robert Jr.’s father, Robert Cosby Sr., delivered a speech that “was unbelievable.”

During the “RHOSLC” Season 6 reunion, Mary, 53, revealed that she feared her son, who was incarcerated in Salt Lake County Metro Jail due to violating a pretrial protective order against his now ex-wife, Alexiana Smokoff, at the time, would die months before his passing.

“It’s just, you don’t want to see your kid suffer, but I know it’s good,” she explained about her son being in jail. “And I’d rather him be there than dead, you know?”

During a 2024 episode of “RHOSLC,” Robert Jr. detailed his drug addiction, saying that he would often take 10 OxyContin pills a day.
