Bryson DeChambeau had a tumultuous first round of the Masters.

DeChambeau, 32, who shot 4 over par on the day, hit a patron with a tee shot on the sixth hole before later struggling to get out of a bunker on the 11th hole, hitting out of the sand three times before escaping the trap.

On the 180-yard, par 3, DeChambeau pulled his tee shot toward the left and hit a patron in the leg. The ball bounced back toward the hole and ended up settling off the green.

DeChambeau covered his mouth with his hand when he saw the ball strike the patron. When he walked toward the green, he found the patron, gave him a golf ball and shook his hand.

DeChambeau, who was even par at the time, made an outstanding recovery, chipping the ball to three feet from the hole despite being 24 yards out and eventually saved par by making the ensuing putt.

The Clovis, California, native, remained at even par until the 11th hole, when he had difficulty escaping a greenside bunker.

DeChambeau’s second shot was from the fairway, hitting down toward a green that was flanked by a pond and a bunker. DeChambeau stayed far away from the pond, and his ball ended up rolling in the bunker.

The LIV Golf star hit his first bunker shot just three yards, not even nearing the lip of the bunker. His second bunker shot went nowhere, and he appeared to completely miss the ball.

DeChambeau finally escaped the bunker on his third attempt, hitting the ball just over the ledge of the sand trap before letting it roll about 15 feet away. He ended up two-putting for triple bogey, bringing him to three over par for the day.

His struggles continued on the 16th hole, when he three-putted for bogey to bring him to four over par on the day. DeChambeau erased the stroke gained with a birdie on the 17th hole after a great iron shot from the rough left him eight feet from the hole.

However, DeChambeau bogeyed the 18th hole, finishing with a 4-over 76 for the day.

For DeChambeau, his start to the Masters was similar to last year’s, when he shot an opening-round 73. DeChambeau rallied in the second and third rounds, and he entered the final round in the final pairing with Rory McIlroy before shooting a 75 on Sunday to end in a tie for fifth place.

DeChambeau will look to turn things around Friday, when he tees off at 1:20 p.m. ET.

Tiger Woods may be down, but his former right-hand man does not believe he is out.

Joe LaCava was Woods’ caddie when he broke his 11-year major drought and miraculously won the 2019 Masters, his first green jacket since 2005.

Woods is now 50, and in recent memory, his performances on the course have been plenty to forget.

But LaCava, now on Patrick Cantlay’s bag, is not putting “anything” past the 15-time major champion, who certainly has a flair for the dramatic.

“He’s got anything in him, and he’s proven that. But yeah, that’s the hope for me. He’s done everything, right?” LaCava told The Athletic when asked if he could one day again contend at Augusta.

“He’s going to be 50-plus, I get it. But I wouldn’t put anything past the guy. So I’d never write him off.”

LaCava said he has not reached out to Woods since his DUI arrest, instead “leaving him alone and letting him figure it out for himself.”

“He’s got to help himself, which is what I’m hoping he’ll do. But I have not made any contact with him …” LaCava said.

“He’s got enough people probably texting him and hounding him, right? I don’t need to bother him. I care greatly about him. I’m not p—-d at him. He knows that. He knows that I care deeply about him. He’s got enough stuff going on, so I’m sure we’ll communicate once he’s back home. I’m assuming he doesn’t have access to his phone anyway.”

In 14 majors since his last victory, he has failed to muster a top 20 finish. It’s his longest such streak since failing to finish in the top 20 in the first six majors of his career in 1995 and 1996. In his last 26 majors, he has only four top 20 finishes.

Since finishing tied for ninth at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, his best finish in his 18 official events since then has been a tie for 37th at the 2020 PGA Championship.

He has not competed since 2024, when he competed in just five events — the Genesis Invitational and the four majors. He withdrew from the Genesis, finished dead last in the Masters and missed the cut in the other majors.

The Masters’ no-phone policy does not discriminate, even if you are a former major golf champion.

Mark Calcavecchia, the winner of the 1989 Open Championship, was allegedly removed by Augusta National Golf Club security for using his phone this week at the Masters.

Golfweek spoke to Calcavecchia, who didn’t deny taking out his phone out on the grounds, which is automatic dismissal.

“I’ve got nothing negative to say about Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, so I think we should literally hang up right now,” he said.

While Calcavecchia, 65, isn’t a previous Masters winner, he did play in the event 18 times during his career from 1987-2008. He even finished in second place in 1988.

Winners of the three other majors like Calcavecchia had do get a five-year exempt invitation to play in the Masters, and then they become “honorary invitees” for life.

But the rules are the rules, especially at Augusta National. No one is above the law on the premises, and the Masters official website says so when it comes to cell phones.

“The use of any device for phone calls, emails, text messaging, or to record and/or transmit voice, video or data is strictly prohibited,” the website reads.

Augusta National does provide phone service on the grounds. Designated phone banks, where AT&T provides service as a “champion partner” with the Masters, are found on the course to make phone calls if needed.

Any other technological form of communication is strictly forbidden, and Calcavecchia is paying the price.

It’s the unfortunate reality for some who don’t abide by the rules, but the Masters is all about logging out and living in the present, adding to the wonder and mystique that is the first golf major of the golf season.

Paulina Gretzky, the daughter of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky and wife of LIV Golf star Dustin Johnson, was at the Masters Par 3 Contest caddying for her husband on Wednesday.

The Masters Par 3 Contest is the event that takes place before the Masters tees off. It’s one of the lighthearted events of the week as golfers were able to test whether they can get some aces on specific holes at Augusta National. It’s an event meant for fun and family.

Gretzky was pictured with Johnson as he participated in the event. Johnson finished 1-over par during the event, which Aaron Rai won. She was also spotted with Nicole Willett, the wife of Danny Willett.

Gretzky has appeared at the event for several years, including when Johnson won his first green jacket all the way back in 2020. That year, the event was held in November due to the coronavirus pandemic. Johnson set a record with a final score of 20-under par.

It was the last time Johnson won an event that also featured PGA Tour competitors. He was one of the first golfers who joined LIV Golf, participating in his first event in June 2022.

In the LIV Golf series, Johnson has picked up three individual wins. He won the LIV Golf Boston Invitational in September 2022, LIV Golf Tulsa in 2023 and LIV Golf Las Vegas in February 2024. He hasn’t won an event since then.

He’s 26th in the standings through five events this season. His best finish came in Singapore where he finished tied for 10th.

Johnson will be in the field for the Masters once more. He tees off in the first round at 9:43 a.m. ET on Thursday.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The green jacket had barely settled onto Rory McIlroy’s 5-foot-9 frame as the freshly minted Masters champion a year ago when he posed this question to the packed interview room at Augusta National:

“What are we all going to talk about next year?’’

That was McIlroy’s verbal retort to the assembled media after not only ending an 11-year major championship drought, but capturing his first Masters and completing the coveted career Grand Slam.

With every major championship he’d entered since his last win, in 2014, the questions had come to McIlroy in rapid succession, and the narrative had become suffocating.

When was he going to win another major?

Would he ever win a Masters with the baggage he was carrying?

Finally, in April 2025, McIlroy answered, staving off Justin Rose in a playoff.

So, that comment from McIlroy to open his winner’s press conference was his public exhale.

A year later, here we are and there is a fresh question in place for McIlroy: What now?

“I think the story as it relates to me is what do I do from now onwards? What motivates me? What gets me going? What do I still want to achieve in the game?’’ McIlroy said Tuesday in advance of his Masters defense. “I think that’s the story.’’

No player has defended his Masters title since Tiger Woods in 2001-2002.

“There’s still a lot that I want to do,’’ McIlroy said. “You think every time you achieve something or have success that you’ll be happy, but then the goalposts move, and they just keep nudging a little bit further and further out of reach.

“I think what I’ve realized is, if you can just really find enjoyment in the journey, that’s the big thing, because honestly I felt like the career Grand Slam was my destination, and I got there and then I realized it wasn’t the destination.’’

The prevailing thought is that McIlroy comes to Augusta now completely liberated from the dark questions that followed — and dogged — him before winning last year.

“I think the nice thing now is instead of it being, ‘Come on, Rory, you know you can do this,’ it’s [trying to win] back-to-back,’’ McIlroy said. “There’s a real positive connotation to it instead of, ‘Geez Rory, we’ve been waiting a while. When are you going to get this done?’

“It’s just very different, and maybe that’s just my perception of it. But it is so nice to walk around property or be out on the golf course and just not have that hanging over me, like it feels that it’s a big weight off my shoulders.’’

Asked what he believes will be the most difficult element of repeating, McIlroy said, “Probably the 90 other players that are in the field.’’

“There’s so many great players and so many players with so much experience on this golf course, it’s not quite like some of the other major championships. It seems like you get a lot of the same guys contending year in and year out. That’s the challenge.’’

The final so-called distraction McIlroy faced as the defending champion came Tuesday night when he hosted the annual Champions Dinner.

“People keep asking me why didn’t you go more Irish?’’ McIlroy, who’s from Northern Ireland, said of the menu.

“And I said, ‘Because I want to enjoy the dinner as well.’ ’’

The best question asked of McIlroy on Tuesday was about any fear of missing out he had in previous Masters Tuesdays, seeing the past champions get ready for the clubhouse dinner he wasn’t invited to.

He called that feeling every year “not great,’’ adding, “I wish I was a part of it.’’

Then he launched into a funny story about last year.

“Myself and Justin Rose actually went for dinner at the club last year on the Tuesday night with a few of the Augusta National members,’’ he recalled. “And it was weird, I was pulling up Magnolia Lane, and you get to the circle, and I’m like, ‘Well, do I go and park way over at the players parking lot? Because I’m not going to park in the champions parking lot.

“Then at that specific moment, the champions were having their cocktails out on the balcony [and] I’m like, ‘I don’t want to valet and get out [because] they’re going to see me and it’s going to be weird.’ So I had this really awkward moment with it all last year.

“Thankfully, that was the last time that I needed to do that.’’

Gary Woodland’s return to Augusta National Golf Club carries added significance this year after he pulled off a surprising win at the Houston Open in March.

Woodland embraced the moment at Augusta National this week, reflecting on the tradition and significance of the Masters.

“I love this place,” Woodland said Tuesday. “I love the tradition. There’s nothing like driving down Magnolia Lane. I definitely drove down a little slower this year than I ever have, even the first time I was here in 2011. I’m definitely taking it all in this week for sure.”

However, Woodland also acknowledged that the crowds and close quarters at Augusta National could be triggering.

“It’s a big week for me this week,” he said. “The fans are very close on the tee boxes. There’s a lot going on. There’s probably not a safer golf tournament in the world, so I’m happy for that. But it’s still a battle in my head if I’m safe or not. That’s a tough pill to swallow.”

Woodland, who won the 2019 U.S. Open, recently revealed that he has battled post-traumatic stress disorder for roughly a year. In 2023, he underwent a procedure to remove a benign brain lesion that triggered seizures, anxiety and fear.

But even after the surgery, Woodland’s symptoms persisted, leading to a PTSD diagnosis.

Woodland, 41, spent part of his week at Augusta National meeting with security officials.

“The main deal is they were showing me where security is,” Woodland said. “The whole deal for me is it’s visual, right? If I can see somebody, then I can remind myself that I’m safe constantly. So, I have a good idea now where security is on every hole.”

Woodland described a recent tense stretch at the Houston Open two weeks ago, when he was on high alert late in his second round.

“I battled the last 10 holes thinking people were trying to kill me,” Woodland said. “I have security with me. But I talked to [PGA] Tour security that night, and I told them what I was going through. Every time I looked up on the weekend, my security team was behind me.”

The victory at last month’s tournament secured Woodland the last spot in the highly competitive Masters field.

Months before undergoing surgery in 2023, Woodland finished tied for 14th at that year’s Masters. He missed the cut at Augusta National in 2024 and also fell short of qualifying for last year’s Masters.

“I’m emotional from the standpoint I know how close I probably was to never being back here, and I’m very proud of myself for earning my way back,” Woodland noted. “People ask me, ‘How was the win?’ The one thing I know is having this brain tumor and having PTSD, it doesn’t matter if I win or lose. It doesn’t care.”

Michal Szubarczyk, 15, makes snooker history after becoming the youngest winner of a World Snooker Championship match; this year’s ​tournament begins on April 18 and runs until ⁠May 4 at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield

Michal Szubarczyk of Poland made history in World Snooker Championship qualifying

Michal Szubarczyk became the youngest winner of a World Snooker Championship match in the first qualifying round.

Aged just 15 years, two months, and 25 days, the Polish prodigy beat the previous record that was set by Liam Davies in 2022 as he defeated Hong Kong star Ng On Yee 10-7 on day one of the World Championship qualifiers at the English Institute of Sport.

Three-time women’s world snooker champion, Ng, came into the match on a high after claiming wins on the women’s tour in February and March.

“I feel very proud,” Szubarczyk told the World Snooker Tour.

“I’m very excited to play the next match, and maybe this year or next year, I can become the youngest Crucible player.

“For me, it’s the first goal of every player in professional snooker [to play in the World Championship]. I’m enjoying the pressure. It doesn’t work in a bad way for me.

“I even like it, and I think that’s good. For the last six years, I have been dreaming about playing at the Crucible.

“I love representing Poland. Without the Polish events I wouldn’t be here, because I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to play at European or World Championships.”

Szubarczyk has to win three more matches to become the youngest qualifier for the Crucible Theatre.

If he does, he will surpass the record held by Luca Brecel, who made his Crucible debut in 2012 aged 17 years and 45 days.

Jimmy White has not played at the World Championship since 2006

Six-time World Snooker Championship finalist Jimmy White bowed out in the first qualifying round to Gao Yang in agonising fashion.

The snooker legend, who turns 64 next month, established an early 5-1, but the 21 year-old from China battled back with the match decided in a final-frame thriller, won by Gao.

It means White’s 20-year wait to return to the Crucible continues – despite attempting to qualify every year.

Tiger Woods may not be competing in this year’s Masters Tournament, but he is on golfers’ minds as they prepare for the major this year.

Woods’ DUI arrest in Florida on March 27 sent a shockwave through the golf community, and despite needing to lock in at one of the hardest courses on the golf schedule, it’s hard not to think about the five-time Masters winner.

Bodycam footage from his arrest, which occurred after a rollover crash in Jupiter Island, Florida, saw Woods admit he was “hoping to” play in the Masters. But he released a statement after his arrest, saying he would be stepping away from golf to “seek treatment.”

“I look at it and go, ‘He’s just a human being like everyone else, and we have struggles,’” Jason Day said on Monday regarding Woods’ situation, per ESPN. “It’s unfortunate. The only thing that I don’t understand is that it’s a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harm’s way as well.”

Day added that Woods was “my hero growing up.”

“The reason why I play golf is because of this tournament and Tiger. It’s hard to see him go through what he’s going through, and especially under the microscope.

“Some people want him to fail. Some people obviously want him to succeed. It’s really difficult for me to go through that and watch him, and I know that he’s getting the help now, which is good. I’m just hoping he comes out on the other side and is better.”

Patrick Reed, a green jacket winner like Woods, is also missing him in Augusta, as well as fellow LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson, who announced he won’t be playing in the tournament due to a family health matter just days after Woods’ arrest.

“Let’s be honest, without Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in the events, in golf, when they both step away, honestly I feel it hurts the game of golf,” Reed said, per ESPN. “But at the same time, we want them to come back and be healthy and ready to go.”

Bubba Watson viewed Woods’ situation from a human perspective — not as a fellow golfer.

“I could care less about Tiger’s golf,” he said, per ESPN. “I told him from day one that we started hanging out back in [2006 or 2007], somewhere in there, that I’m pulling for him as a human being. Forget his golf — I could care less about his golf.”

Woods’ DUI arrest resulted in charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a blood alcohol level (BAL) test after law enforcement said his vehicle collided with another while he drove impaired.

Woods released his statement after entering a plea of not guilty, waiving his right to an arraignment and demanding a trial with a jury Tuesday.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said in a statement posted on social media.

This arrest marked Woods’ second DUI arrest within the last decade. In 2017, he was taken into custody, also in Jupiter Island, after taking prescription drugs and falling asleep behind the wheel of a running car at 3 a.m.

The Masters Tournament is all about tradition, and that includes everything down to what the golfers wear during the four days at Augusta National Golf Club.

That was on display last year when Australian star Jason Day was asked to keep his Malbon Golf outfits a bit more reserved. But it seems that he’s already starting to push the boundary before teeing off for his first round on Thursday.

Day, a former world No. 1 golfer, was spotted on Monday for his practice round in Malbon’s “Birds of Georgia” collection, wearing a top that featured a bunch of different birds, from orioles to cardinals to woodpeckers and more. The outfit was supposed to have matching pants, but it was reported by Sports Illustrated that Day was told by Augusta National to wear normal, solid-colored pants instead.

This came after Malbon dropped Day’s fits for the week on social media.

“If you are on the course and you are tuned in with nature and know the sounds of birds, you’ll make more birdies,” Malbon Golf founder Stephen Malbon told the outlet about Day’s lineup for the week. “It’s inspired by Native American beliefs. Each one of these birds has a different meaning. I’ve been sending the noises of the birds to Jason for the last six months. Hopefully, he’s trying to stay in touch with nature.”

Throughout the week, Day’s birdwatcher-themed outfits will even feature a vest, set for Wednesday’s practice round.

Day isn’t the only Malbon athlete in the field either. Sungjae Im will be rocking Malbon’s bird-themed clothing.

In 2024, Day made national headlines with his first Masters collaboration with Malbon. He was spotted wearing a vest that had “No. 313. Malbon Golf Championship” written across it in bold lettering with accompanying blue, baggy pants.

But, when Day showed up to the course for his next round, which came on the same day due to a rainout on Thursday, the vest was no longer being worn.

Day revealed that Augusta National told him to remove the sweater, and as he didn’t want to ruffle any feathers during the first major of the year, he did what he was told.

“My agent got a call from high above and said, ‘Hey, we need Jason to take that vest off.’”

Day said last year’s original Masters plans were “a lot crazier” than the 2024 lineup, and the Masters requested an early look at what he was expected to wear. Plans had to be changed.

But, while Day admitted he was “not here to step on anyone’s toes because I know that when we play at the Masters, it’s all about the Masters,” his outfits this week already seem to be pushing the limit.

This will be Day’s 15th Masters Tournament appearance at Augusta National, with his best finish coming in 2011 when he finished tied for second.
