NEW DELHI: Babar Azam has been dropped from Pakistan’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Bangladesh, as the selectors begin reshaping the team with an eye on next year’s 50-over World Cup. The decision follows Pakistan’s disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in India and Sri Lanka, where they failed to reach the semi-finals.

Babar endured a lean run in the T20 tournament, managing only 91 runs. Despite that dip in form, his ODI numbers remain impressive — 6,501 runs and 20 centuries in 140 matches — making his omission a significant call. Alongside him, opener Saim Ayub, all-rounders Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, and fast bowler Naseem Shah have also been left out of the 15-member squad.In a clear sign of transition, Pakistan have drafted in six uncapped players: Abdul Samad, Maaz Sadaqat, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Saad Masood, Sahibzada Farhan and Shamyl Hussain. The three ODIs will be played in Dhaka on March 11, 13 and 15, giving the newcomers a chance to prove themselves on the international stage.Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury during the T20 World Cup.Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi will captain the side, the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed, as the team enters what appears to be a rebuilding phase.With the next ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October next year, Pakistan seem focused on refreshing their squad and testing new combinations in the lead-up to the global event.

Sanjay Manjrekar has raised concerns over the batting approach of India captain Suryakumar Yadav during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.Manjrekar praised Suryakumar’s 84-run innings against the United States in Mumbai, where he adjusted his tempo and finished strongly. However, he said the India captain has continued with a cautious approach in later matches, which has limited the roles of Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh in the closing overs.“There is something that I am seeing in Suryakumar Yadav which I’m not liking too much. 77-6, India against USA, at the Wankhede, and Suryakumar Yadav had to change his game, which he did brilliantly. Just slowed down a little bit, and then exploded, and got a great score, player of the match, and everything,” Manjrekar said on his Instagram page.

He added that Suryakumar may have taken that approach too far after that game, including during the match against Pakistan. According to him, both Suryakumar and Tilak Varma have been batting conservatively, which has reduced the impact of finishers.“Since then, I think he is taking that a bit too far. Against Pakistan, where India lost a couple of wickets, he really pulled down the shutters quite a lot. He and Tilak Varma are both playing slightly conservatively, and in the end, what happens is that people like Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, and Rinku Singh are not really tapped into resources as much,” he continued.Manjrekar also said such an approach can be risky in T20 cricket if a senior player or captain feels the need to stay till the end, especially while batting first or chasing big totals. He said no top-order batter should try to control the innings in that way.“In T20 cricket, that is a dangerous thing to do, where a senior player or captain feels like he has got to stay in, especially while batting first. When you are setting targets of 200 plus, if you have somebody in the top four who believes that he is the guy who has got to control the innings and make sure he is the one who will take India to a certain score, that is a very dangerous tactic. No batter must think like that. So, Surya must be careful about that,” Manjrekar concluded.Suryakumar has scored 164 runs in the tournament so far, second only to Ishan Kishan among India’s batters. His strike rate of 136.13 is well below Kishan’s 202.29.India will play South Africa in their first Super 8 match in Ahmedabad on Sunday. India topped Group A with eight points after winning all their group-stage matches.

NEW DELHI: Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie broke through England’s middle order as the West Indies secured a 30-run win in their T20 World Cup match in Mumbai on Wednesday.West Indies posted 196 for 6, built around Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 76, with support from Jason Holder in the final overs.England were bowled out for 166 in 19 overs in reply. They began the chase quickly, but Motie, who mixes left-arm orthodox and wrist spin, dismissed Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell and captain Harry Brook in a spell of 3 for 33.England slipped from 85 for 2 in the eighth over to 131 for 5 in the 14th when Brook was out for 17. Sam Curran tried to keep the chase alive with 43 not out from 30 balls but ran out of partners.The result gave West Indies their second win in two matches and moved them to the top of Group C in the race for the Super Eights.England started strongly as Phil Salt took 24 runs from Jason Holder’s first over, hitting two sixes and three fours to move the score to 31 without loss after two overs. Salt made 30 before being caught by Rutherford off Romario Shepherd in the fourth over.England reached 67 for 1 at the end of the powerplay, with Jos Buttler on 15 and Bethell on 20. Buttler hit a six off Roston Chase but was caught in the deep by Rovman Powell for 21.Banton was out for 2 for the second match in a row, and when Bethell fell for 33, both to Motie, England were 90 for 4. Motie then dismissed Brook, caught and bowled for 17, leaving England 131 for 5 after 14 overs.Earlier, Rutherford and Holder added 61 runs for the sixth wicket in 32 balls. Rutherford struck seven sixes and two fours, while Holder made 33 with four sixes and a four.Rashid was England’s most effective bowler with figures of 2 for 16 from four overs.
