Tom Izzo takes defiant stance on retirement after Michigan State’s tough March Madness ending

Tom Izzo has no plans to slow down.

Not when that hunger for an elusive second national title still fuels him.

The legendary 71-year-old Michigan State coach defiantly said he’s not considering retirement and vowed to “get back there” after a tough 67-63 loss to UConn in the Sweet 16 on Friday.

Tom Izzo and Michigan State fell in the Sweet 16. AP

Izzo and the Spartans are in their longest Final Four drought in his 31 seasons, having last played in the season’s final weekend during the 2018-19 campaign.

“I don’t know, I’m feeling good. We all talk about retirement. Why? What the hell am I going to do?” Izzo said following the end of a 27-8 campaign. “The minute I don’t feel good, the minute I don’t feel like I’m giving my AD or president or school every ounce of energy I have every day or that energy drops, you don’t have to worry about it. I don’t steal money. I won’t steal anybody’s time.

“But it’s sure as hell not going to be now. I’ve got some things to accomplish. I’m going to make damn sure that — I said a couple years ago that I’ll find a way to get back there. We’ve knocked on the door twice. We haven’t gotten back. We’ll get back.”

Michigan State is perennially one of the sport’s top teams, but they have not been the Final Four constant they were earlier in Izzo’s tenure.

The Spartans have only made the Elite Eight once in their last six postseason appearances despite having strong rosters most seasons.

This year’s third-seeded team had the potential to win a title, but they fell behind, 25-6, to UConn on Friday and rallied to take the lead before the second-seeded Huskies made more plays down the stretch.

It’s fair to wonder just how much longer Izzo would want to keep pushing for a championship now that he’s in his 70s and in this Name, Image and Likeness era that can exhaust coaches.

Izzo, though, made it clear that he wants to add a third championship to the trophy case in East Lansing when asked what he sees himself doing in five years.

The longtime coach won his lone title in 2000.

“Trying to win a National Championship, plain and simple. That’s it. Those things usually start after your last loss. Nowadays it’s a little more screwed up, but not at Michigan State,” Izzo said.

“After our last loss, we all talked about what we’ve got to do next year and how we’ve got to learn from this. It is — I’ve got to give UConn a lot of credit, but man, we didn’t look like ourselves early. You’re right. That’s got to fall on the coach. I’ve got to get them ready to do that.”

Izzo said there are some “bright things” in his program’s future, with the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class featuring four top-100 prospects on the way, per 247 Sports.

He said he has seven to eight players set to return, with star guard Jeremy Fears Jr. and forward Coen Carrr both having eligibility.

“I’m going to the portal right away. (Saturday), I’m going to the portal. The only difference is the portal at Michigan State is different than the portal at most places.

“I’m going right to my frickin’ locker room, and I’m going to talk to each and every player right there. I’m going to make some decisions about what we’re going to do that I feel very comfortable with. Then, I’m going to make sure that every one of them call our four freshmen that are going to be coming in next year and set the table on what’s going to be expected and how we can, not do better than this year in a lot of ways, but how we can learn from maybe the mistakes we made.”

Tom Izzo said he’s not going anywhere. Getty Images

If Izzo retains his top players, the Spartans will be ranked highly in the preseason poll and perhaps give him a strong chance at winning his second championship.

“I’m the luckiest guy in the world. I’m just not lucky enough to be playing on Sunday,” Izzo said. “I’ll get to play on another Sunday. Hang around.”

Cam Newton says NFL’s global push is ‘on brand’ ahead of historic 2026 season: ‘It’s business’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The NFL will play a record nine international games during the 2026 season, spanning four different continents and seven countries, and beginning with a stop in Melbourne, Australia.

The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers will play the first-ever game in Australia, but it will be played at 10:35 a.m. local time on Friday Sept. 11 to coincide with a Thursday night game at 8:35 p.m. ET in the U.S.

With the NFL continuing its push to reach millions more globally, there is a question: what do players think about it, especially those that will be in situations like the Rams and 49ers come September?

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton was never able to play overseas, as he battled a Lisfranc injury when his squad was set to play in the United Kingdom. However, he believes, from a business perspective for the NFL, a global push makes too much sense.

“I think what the NFL is doing is almost on brand. It’s business,” he said. “As we’re having this conversation about business, they understand the magnitude of magnifying the game of football. They’re doing it on one sense with full-contact football, but they’re also doing it in another sense, that comes probably more natural, with the flag dynamic.

According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 2.4 million kids under 17 who play organized flag football in the U.S. But globally, there are millions participating in the flag game, which the NFL is heavily involved in.

LEGENDARY SPORTS AGENT LEIGH STEINBERG SLAMS NOTION OF OVERSEAS SUPER BOWL: ‘CONVENTION OF AMERICANA’

As a result, international fans of all ages are tapped into the NFL game, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and the rest of the league office have made a concerted effort to allow those fans to see live-action NFL play in their home countries.

“So many different people from different colors, creeds, as well as genders, can participate in the flag game. I think the NFL understands the importance, similar to what the NBA has been on for decades now. They’re just trying to explore and expand the brand of the NFL.”

Other than Melbourne, there will be three London games, while Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Munich, Madrid and Mexico City will all be host sites for the NFL in 2026.

It may be good business for the NFL, but legendary sports agent Leigh Steinberg said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital that players have “mixed feelings” about traveling overseas.

“They actually like the travel aspect of it, seeing different cultures and other things,” Steinberg said. “But it takes a physical toll. I mean, to fly from [the West Coast] to London is 12 hours. Then, to fly back, it’s 14 hours. When you start moving east in Europe, it gets longer than that. So, it takes a physical toll.

“I think that if you ask the coaches, they don’t love international games, because it takes them out of the routine and schedule.”

EXPANDING CONTENT REACH WITH OFFSCRIPT

Newton may not be on the field any longer, but he remains tuned in to the NFL and every other sports moment through his content creation, most notably his “Funky Friday” and “4th & 1 with Cam Newton” shows as part of his Iconic Saga Productions.

Newton and his production team announced a major partnership with Offscript Worldwide, a creator-owned ecosystem that connects culture-shaping brands and platforms under one roof, which includes REVOLT Sports and 3BlackDot.

Offscript unveiled this new partnership at the 2026 IAB NewFronts, where they will begin collaborating with Newton’s independent production powerhouse, integrating his hit shows and amplifying the reach of athlete-driven storytelling for global brands.

“When you really think about Offscript, it’s like the ecosystem that bridges so many different facets of our lives, from sports, to culture, to lifestyle and so many different things,” Newton explained. “That transition for me wasn’t foreign. Instead of training to be the best football player, or the best athlete. Now, I’m just training to be the best content creator I can possibly be.

“I just always want to be a beacon of the person, in a lot of ways, figured it out as I went. I’m just so thrilled that Offscript gives me and Iconic Saga the opportunity to continue to believe in our vision, and we’re not able to do these things without great partners like this.”

As this partnership kicks off, Newton will also be hitting the road for the “4th & 1 College Tailgate Experience,” visiting HBCU’s across the U.S. to celebrate their heritage and shine a national spotlight on student-athletes, academic programs, and the unique game-day culture that defines what it means to be an HBCU.

Swiss Army Barnes does it all for Raptors | Globalnews.ca

TORONTO – Scottie Barnes is, theoretically, a power forward. But 73 games into the Toronto Raptors season, he’s played extended time at every position.

Against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday it was time to play point guard with regular starter Immanuel Quickley out with plantar facitiis in his right foot. Barnes excelled in the role with 23 points, 12 assists and six rebounds as Toronto rolled to a 119-106 victory.

“I’m just waiting for the day when Scottie is gonna tell me, ‘Coach, this is too much I’ve been asking you to do,’” joked Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic. “Play three, play four, play point guard, play five.

“Go guard the point guard, go guard the five. He’s just going to do everything that he needs to do to help our team and to win the game.”

Barnes had more than 10 assists for a third consecutive game, a career high. It was also his career-best 27th double-double of the season, surpassing the 26 he had last campaign.

“It doesn’t matter where I need to be on the floor, I’m just going to try and do what I can to try and win the game,” said Barnes. “Whatever it is, starting point guard, guarding the five, playing point, playing forward.”

The two-time all star also had two steals and three blocks in 36:29 of playing time as Rajakovic rested all of his starters with a little over two minutes left to play.

Rajakovic said that although the six-foot-eight Barnes’s size makes him a forward, he’s got a playmaker’s instincts.

“He’s a pass-first player. He likes to move, to pass, he likes to find his teammates. He is exceptional in transition,” said Rajakovic. “We were getting stops early in the game, and he was really pushing the ball in transition and all he does is scanning the floor.

“It really allows him, with his size and his athletic ability, to play over the top of the defence.”

Second-year player Ja’Kobe Walter started in Quickley’s place. He was one of four Raptors who scored 18 points, and he doled out four assists with Barnes bearing the playmaking load.

Both Barnes and Rajakovic had high praise for Walter’s efforts.

“His shooting is just something that we need on our team,” said Barnes of Walter, who went 6-for-14 on field-goal attempts and 4-for-10 on three-pointers. “He’s been on fire. Every shot he takes it looks like it’s going in.

“Sometimes we get in these situations where we’re not making shots, but we can count on him to be able to play defence and make shots.”

Rajakovic said that Walter has been making an impact for the Raptors in two ways.

“He did a really good job defensively, pressuring the ball. He really set a tone on (Pelicans guard) Jeremiah Fears tonight and he’s shooting the ball really well,” said Rajakovic. “He’s good out there for us and the whole team trusts him.

“He plays so hard so there is not much you can object to when he plays that hard.”

Rookie centre Collin Murray-Boyles left the game early with back spasms. He finished with nine points and two rebounds.

St. John’s wild ride ending in tears proves one thing about its unique character — this team cared

WASHINGTON — This wasn’t supposed to be part of the equation anymore. Cynicism has crept into all of the corners of college basketball. They’re pros now. It’s all a transactional game. Players don’t stick around long enough to learn the words to the alma mater, let alone battle a lump in the throat when it’s played at the end of a game, or a season.

There aren’t supposed to be tears anymore.

There were tears Friday night. Zuby Ejiofor and Dillon Mitchell sat behind a couple of microphones deep in the bowels of Capital One Arena, maybe half an hour after a valiant attempt to topple a basketball citadel known as the Duke Blue Devils. St. John’s led by one at halftime. They led by 10 five minutes into the second half, and were still within three with under 10 seconds to go.

It ended 80-75, Duke. It ended one of the great runs in St. John’s history, a 21-1 stretch that against almost any other team in the tournament might have stretched to 22-1. It didn’t. To the red-clad fans who’d tried to make Capital One sound like the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, there were a lot of sore throats and a lot of long faces. These are the people who are supposed to wear the emotions now.

TORONTO – Scottie Barnes had a double-double as the Toronto Raptors routed the New Orleans Pelicans 119-106 on Friday.

Barnes had 23 points, 12 assists and six rebounds for Toronto (41-32). Jakob Poeltl also had a double-double with 18 points and 11 boards.

Raptors point guard Immanuel Quickley missed the game as he recovers from plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Ja’Kobe Walter started in his stead but Barnes was Toronto’s de facto playmaker. Walter was one of four Toronto players to finish with 18 points.

Zion Williamson had 22 points and added seven rebounds as New Orleans (25-50) lost its fourth straight.

Dejounte Murray (injury management) and Trey Murphy (ankle) sat out for the Pelicans. Murray had drawn the ire of Toronto fans on March 11 when he crossed up Jamal Shead and stood over the prone Raptors guard, shouting and flexing.

“The trip from L.A., it’s really hard to do it right after the game,” said head coach Darko Rajakovic pre-game. “It would bring you home around 5, 6 in the morning, which is pretty late.

“So we decided to stay over to get some extra rest. (…) We just wanted to push a little bit to give our guys another hour of rest and sleep.”

Takeaways

Pelicans: Both teams struggled to shoot the three ball, but New Orleans was especially bad from beyond the arc. The Pelicans went 7-for-28 from with forward Saddiq Bey responsible for three of those threes.

Raptors: Barnes — who had played every position this season — had more than 10 assists for a third consecutive game, a career high. It was also his 27th double-double of the season, a career best, surpassing the 26 he had last campaign.

Key moment

Barnes stole the ball from Williamson with 2:17 left in the second, feeding Poeltl for a layup to cap a 12-0 Toronto run and a 21-point lead.

Key stat

The win, coupled with Atlanta’s 109-102 loss to the Boston Celtics, moved the Raptors into sole possession of fifth in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks were half a game back of Toronto.

Up next

Toronto: Hosts the Orlando Magic on Sunday in a critical game for both teams vying for a playoff berth.

New Orleans: Hosts the Houston Rockets on Sunday.

Sportscaster Jim Gray says Tiger Woods’ DUI arrest is ‘another cry for help’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tiger Woods was taken into custody after a rollover crash on Jupiter Island, Florida, Friday, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

At a press conference, Sheriff John Budensiek said the five-time Masters winner was traveling at “a high rate of speed” when his vehicle collided with another car, causing it to roll over onto the driver’s side.

Budensiek added that Woods appeared to have exited the vehicle by “crawling” out of the passenger side.

Fox News contributor Jim Gray said Woods’ crash and subsequent arrest mark the latest chapter in what he called an ongoing “sad story.”

“It is a sad story, and it continues to be a sad story. We’ve all been thrilled with him watching him playing golf. He’s a national treasure (and) an international icon, perhaps the greatest ever. Jack Nicklaus has more majors, but Tiger (is) widely acclaimed, is the greatest golfer ever,” Gray said Friday on “Special Report.”

“To see this happen, not only once but twice, now the third time … and to have been able to survive the last time and to now go through it again, it just leads you to wonder who is surrounding him. Why does he keep getting in these circumstances? And he’s been so great with his driver on the course, perhaps he should get a driver to drive him.”

Authorities said Woods “exemplified signs of impairment.” He blew “triple-zeroes” for alcohol but refused a urine test.

“DUI investigators came to the scene here, and Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. They did several tests on him. Of course, he did explain the injuries and the surgeries that he had. We did take that into account, but they did do some in-depth roadside tests,” Budensiek added.

“We really weren’t suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case, and that proved to be true at the jail. … But when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused. And, so, he’s been charged with DUI, with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.”

Gray described the incident as a troubling pattern.

“It’s just another cry for help, it’s screaming out. At some point, somehow, some way, somebody has to get to him to get him this help. Get him a driver, get out from behind the wheel. When you’ve had this many surgeries, obviously we see this with professional sports all the time, numerous surgeries leads to just tremendous pain.

“And with that pain you’ve got to somehow try to curtail it, and it leads people down this path. I can’t speak to whether or not he’s gone down that path. I haven’t spoken to his doctor, and I haven’t spoken to him about it.

“But we do know from habits and from the patterns that we see from others and his own pattern, that something is drastically off here. Thankfully, he hasn’t hurt himself as bad as he did the last time, and he didn’t hurt anybody else.”

The Masters begins April 9 at Augusta National, and Woods recently said he has not ruled out playing in the season’s first major.

In the 14 majors since he won the green jacket in 2019, Woods has failed to muster a top 20 finish. It’s his longest such streak since failing to finish in the top 20 in the first six majors of his career in 1995 and 1996. In his last 26 majors, he has only four top 20 finishes.

Since finishing tied for ninth at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, his best finish in his 18 official events since then has been a tie for 37th at the 2020 PGA Championship.

“He’s given us so many thrills and so much joy. I think it would be a joy for all of us for us to see him get himself back together. To get through the pain. He’s had surgeries on his back, his neck, his Achilles, his knee … so on and so forth.

“They’ve all added up. Just to be able to see him smile and to be a part of the game and to be around his children and to be able to function normally would be a great joy for us going forward. He doesn’t have to live up to himself and what he’s done on the golf course in the past. That’s set in stone, and it’s set forever.”

Woods has not competed in a professional golf tournament since 2024, when he competed in just five events — the Genesis Invitational and the four majors. He withdrew from the Genesis, finished dead last in the Masters and missed the cut in the other majors.

Former UNC basketball star Kenny Smith reacts to Hubert Davis’ firing, shuts down coaching job interest

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

North Carolina’s men’s basketball program parted ways with head coach Hubert Davis earlier this week after an upset loss to VCU in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

UNC did not disclose details about Davis’ departure, instead describing the move as a change in leadership.

The former Tar Heels coach later confirmed on social media he was “let go” despite wanting to continue coaching at Chapel Hill.

Since Davis’ exit, several possible candidates with ties to UNC have emerged, including Kenny “The Jet” Smith, who was notably mentioned by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

After praising Hubert Davis, who both played and later coached at North Carolina, Kenny Smith shut down any interest in the vacant job, calling speculation linking him to the opening “disrespectful.”

“Yeah, we can talk about North Carolina,” Smith, a basketball analyst, said during halftime of the Texas-Purdue Sweet 16 game in the NCAA tournament.

“But that vacancy — I thought that was honestly disrespectful. But first of all, Coach Hubert Davis, thank you. Your service and what you did for North Carolina basketball as a player and as a coach, you moved it forward. I think people forget that because of one game here and there.”

2025-26 MEN’S ELITE 8 ODDS: SPREADS, LINES, WHAT TO KNOW FOR ALL 4 GAMES

Smith emphasized the importance of preserving North Carolina’s coaching lineage.

“But I also think this is a precarious position for North Carolina and for us as Tar Heels. Because what makes us special, when you fire one person, that’s Hubert Davis. But when you have Coach [Brad] Frederick, you have Sean May, you have Jeff Lebo, you have Marcus Paige, you have Pat Sullivan.

“What that is, is you have a lineage to every era of basketball that’s Carolina that was on that staff, including Hubert Davis. Every era was connected.

“That’s what makes us special. Forget all that ‘blue blood.’ What makes Carolina family is the connection of all of those eras were in one building at one time. That’s what makes people pay attention and have some animosity or some love for us.”

It remains unclear how wide UNC will cast its net, but hiring outside the program would break from a tradition tied closely to Dean Smith. Nevertheless, Smith hopes the next coach will be committed to Chapel Hill for the long haul, much like Davis was.

“I will say this. Dean Smith retired as a Tar Heel. Roy Williams retired as a Tar Heel. Hubert Davis was going to retire a Tar Heel. Whoever we come in, they have to want to retire a Tar Heel,” Smith said.

“I don’t care what that means. You don’t want to look for, ‘Oh, [what] JJ Redick has done in LA. I want to be a Laker.’ You retire a Tar Heel, the next person.”

Davis succeeded Roy Williams in 2021 after being elevated from his assistant role. Williams led the Tar Heels to three national titles. North Carolina’s deepest tournament run under Davis was a Sweet 16 appearance.

Former Oakland Raiders center Barret Robbins has died at age 52, Robbins’ former teammate, Tim Brown, announced on X Thursday night.

The cause of death has not yet been publicly released.

“Please pray for their girls, his family and tons of teammates who will be affected by this! It’s unfortunate that his life was never the same after he was not allowed to play in the Super Bowl! Rest peacefully, BR, you deserve it!”

Robbins played nine seasons in the NFL, all with the Raiders, from 1995 to 2003. Before the 2003 Super Bowl, Robbins disappeared for 24 hours, causing concern. Coach Bill Callahan said Robbins was incoherent and unable to play when he returned.

Robbins played all 16 games that season and made the Pro Bowl and was named a first-team All-Pro. The Raiders lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48-21 in the Super Bowl without him.

The Houston, Texas, native later said he had not taken his bipolar disorder or depression medications.

Robbins had multiple issues with law enforcement after his football career. In 2005, he was being investigated by police for a reported burglary in Miami Beach and was shot three times. He pleaded guilty to five charges.

Robbins was sentenced to five years in prison for a drug-related probation violation in 2011. He was released in 2012. In 2016, he was charged with assaulting a woman and her daughter outside a bar.

Tiger Woods involved in rollover crash in Florida less than 2 weeks before Masters: reports

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tiger Woods was involved in a car crash in Florida Friday, according to multiple reports.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office told ESPN the crash happened on Jupiter Island Friday afternoon. Woods’ condition was not immediately known.

Woods competed in the TGL championship earlier this week with his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, and her daughter, Kai, in the stands.

It was his return to competitive golf after he ruptured his Achilles last year ahead of the Masters.

The winner of 15 majors, five at Augusta, was noncommittal about playing at this year’s Masters. President Donald Trump said on “The Five” Thursday Woods would be at Augusta but not play.

Woods has had trouble behind the wheel in the past.

In 2021, he got into a wreck that resulted in serious leg injuries that kept him off the golf course for the entire year. In 2017, he was arrested for driving under the influence, also in Jupiter Island, after taking prescription drugs.

It has been a tough go since Woods made the ultimate comeback in 2019 and miraculously won the green jacket again. In 14 majors since then, he has failed to muster a top 20 finish. It’s his longest such streak since failing to finish in the top 20 in the first six majors of his career in 1995 and 1996. In his last 26 majors, he has only four top 20 finishes.

Giants coach John Harbaugh dismisses viral Joe Biden comparison: ‘I’m not accepting that’

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has made it clear: he will not accept the comparison that he sounds like former President Joe Biden.

Harbaugh went viral after his introductory press conference with the Giants in January when it was pointed out on social media that he sounds like the 46th President of the United States. It is not a comparison that the 63-year-old coach was pleased with.

“I’m not happy with that at all,” Harbaugh said during an appearance on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take.”

“I mean, I might have had a little sore throat that day. I got a little sore throat today. You know, Joe Biden, really? I mean, I mean, come on – did you guys think I sound like Joe Biden?”

Dan Katz, a host known as “Big Cat,” said that when he closed his eyes and heard Harbaugh speak, he thought the comparison was apt. Katz asked Harbaugh to talk about how much he loves ice cream, referring to Biden’s affinity for the dessert.

“I do love ice cream,” Harbaugh said in his Biden impression, drawing a laugh.

While they joked about ice cream, Harbaugh was serious about his disdain for the comparison.

“I’m going to have to dispute that. I’m putting that in dispute right now,” Harbaugh said. “I’m not accepting that. I will not accept that comparison.”

Giants fans will not care about who their new head coach sounds like if he can lead the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2022. The Giants have gone 6-11, 3-14 and 4-13 over the last three seasons, and are starved for a winning team.
