EDMONTON – With trips to the last two Stanley Cup finals to their credit, the Edmonton Oilers seem to know when to ramp up their game.

Matthew Savoie scored the winner as the Oilers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 for their season-high fifth victory in a row Thursday.

Edmonton tied Anaheim for top spot in the Pacific Division with 87 points, looking to win its first divisional title since 1987 — the longest drought in NHL history.

“Everybody just kind of ramped it up with it being close to playoff time and we’re still jostling for a spot and positioning. These games matter and we’re dug in,” said Oilers captain Connor McDavid.

“Just putting the ‘X’ beside our name is the main thing, just getting in, that’s our main focus. Where we’re seeded, I’m not too concerned about it. We can start a series on the road, we can start a series at home, we’re pretty comfortable either way. We just have to get in.”

McDavid saw his goal-scoring streak end at five games, but picked up an assist to extend his point streak to six games, totalling 11 during that stretch. He’s two points ahead of Tampa’s Nikita Kucherov for the NHL scoring lead with 126 on the season.

“The past few weeks we’re really buying in,” said rookie forward Savoie, who has four goals in his last five games and 14 points in his last 18. “We know how important this time of year is and the push we have to make to make the playoffs and give ourselves a really good spot in the seedings.

“Guys know how big a time a year it is and guys are digging in.”

Edmonton is now 29-5-5 when scoring first.

The Oilers are on a strong run even without star forward Leon Draisaitl, out for the rest of the regular season with a lower-body injury.

“It’s just a team game, top to bottom. Missing Leon, nobody’s going to fill that in, we’ve got to do that as a group,” said Henrique. “It’s been a complete effort top to bottom, every line, special teams and in net getting big saves at key times when we need it. It really has been a team effort on this streak and it’s something we need here to the end and obviously through playoffs.”

Henrique’s goal was his third of the season and first goal in 50 games, dating all the way back to Oct. 23.

“As a forward, I’m sure he has the most blocked shots per minute,” said Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch of Henrique’s value to the team. “He had two or three tonight. He’s been snake-bitten, not being able to score goals. Nice to see him score. Everybody was excited.”

Knoblauch said he is pleased with the way the team is playing of late, but doesn’t think trying to end the 40-year drought without a divisional title is top of mind.

“That was long before any of these guys were born. It would make it a little extra special, but right now, as boring as it is, we’re looking at the here and now,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’s absolutely necessary. Be nice to finish first and put a banner up next fall, but this team, whether at home or road, it responds well. If we get into a Game 7, maybe it would be (important), but we’re just trying to play as well as possible.”

Tristan Jarry recorded 17 saves to earn the win for Edmonton.

The Blackhawks (27-35-14) were eliminated from playoff contention for the sixth straight season with a fifth consecutive loss.

Doncic was hobbling after a drive attempt against Thunder wing Jalen Williams midway through the third, limping to stay off his left leg before laying down underneath the basket by the Thunders’ bench.

He appeared to aggravate a left hamstring ailment that he was dealing with in the first half but tried to play through.

Call of the Wilde: Montreal Canadiens win 7 straight, shade the New York Rangers 3-2 – Montreal | Globalnews.ca

It was a trap game. After running the gauntlet beating hot teams like Columbus, Carolina and Tampa Bay, the Montreal Canadiens had to make sure that they didn’t take it easy against the struggling New York Rangers.

Battle-tested Oilers ‘buying in’ as playoffs near | Globalnews.ca

They didn’t, giving it another strong effort against a Rangers team that gave it all they had. It was a 3-2 Canadiens victory.

Wilde Horses

It took until near the midway point of the second period, but the stars did come out to shine on Broadway in the end.

The first moment of brilliance was from Ivan Demidov. He didn’t just pass it over to Alex Newhook, which would have had a limited level of effectiveness. He looked right at the Rangers goalie for a shot, then passed it.

It’s that high level of deception that makes all the difference in the NHL.

Story continues below advertisement

It was the same intelligence and creativity on the second Canadiens goal. Nick Suzuki knew the pathway to passing to Juraj Slafkovsky wasn’t there if he tried it direct, so he banked it off the boards at the perfect angle instead. Slafkovsky redirected it in a deft fashion 90 degrees to Cole Caufield. He wired it home with a one-timer into the top corner with the perfect shot.

That wasn’t it for the night, though, as they just kept on going. With five minutes remaining, it was a defensive zone draw, but seconds later, it was in the net. Suzuki with won draw to Mike Matheson to a streaking Caufield. He danced around the defender, then slid in his second of the night.

The numbers are stunning for the line. That’s 30 goals in the last 15 games since being reunited. The sample size is getting bigger and they’re not slowing down at all. Caufield has 49 goals this season, 28 of them in his last 27 games. Caufield is only one goal behind the league-leader Nathan MacKinnon for the Rocket Richard Trophy.

Suzuki has 94 points with another two point game. The milestones are within reach with seven games remaining. From that line, it’s remarkable. They are a top-three line in the NHL in the same category as the MacKinnon line in Colorado and the Mark Scheifele line in Winnipeg for goals this season.

The Canadiens got yet another stellar game from their goaltender. The issue with the team when Samuel Montembeault was struggling has become a strength. Jakub Dobes is seventh in the entire league in Goals Saved Above Expected. They gave him a rest, so Jacob Fowler put in a Dobes-like number himself. Fowler stopped 21 of 23 shots for a GSAE of .96.

Wilde Goats

The Canadiens have won seven straight games. The Canadiens have seven games remaining and a playoff spot is almost a certainty. They need four points. They have allowed only eight goals in their last six games. They are sixth in the league in points.

It’s excellence all around. No goats.

Wilde Cards

Lost in the shuffle of Nick Suzuki making a charge to be the first 100-point player on the Canadiens since Mats Naslund in 1986 is Suzuki’s status to win the Selke Trophy.

The award is given to the best defensive forward in the NHL. Aleksander Barkov won the award the last two seasons, but with his serious injury this season the race is wide open.

Suzuki has had such a remarkable campaign leading the Canadiens to huge success that he has become the favourite — only a slight favourite, though, over Nico Hischier. Suzuki has a 31 per cent probability to win the Selke, while Hischier is second at 26 per cent.

Suzuki is finishing the season with a charge while Hischier is on a weak Devils club. Suzuki has a plus-34 to lead the Canadiens. Hischier has a minus seven on the Devils. Based on that metric, it’s difficult to understand at all why Hischier would be second favorite to win the Selke.

Story continues below advertisement

Offence does have some sway in the vote done by the NHL hockey writers association, and Suzuki is on his way to a 100-point season. Hischier is on pace for only 65 points.

Looking at the statistics and how the clubs are performing, the bettors may have this one wrong. This doesn’t look close at all. Suzuki should be the insurmountable favourite to win the Selke.

Tiger Woods was ‘hoping to’ play in Masters before shocking DUI arrest, bodycam footage shows

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Bodycam footage of Tiger Woods’ DUI arrest in Jupiter Island, Florida, last Friday showed the 15-time major winner saying he was “hoping to” play in this year’s Masters.

As Woods was sitting in a police vehicle, an officer was talking golf with him, mentioning a putter Woods said he won “14 majors” with.

Then, the officer asked Woods if he planned on playing in the Masters, and he responded, “Hoping to.”

Someone associated with Woods walked up to the group talking and added, “Depends on y’all.”

Woods won’t be playing at Augusta National Golf Club next week for the first major of the season, which Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley confirmed earlier this week after the rollover crash and arrest of the five-time green jacket winner.

“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being,” Ridley said in a statement. “Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta.”

TIGER WOODS’ TEAMMATE CALLS GOLFER’S DUI ARREST ‘VERY DISTURBING’

There was a chance Woods was trying to play in the Masters, and he clearly had that mindset before his crash.

Woods put out a statement, announcing he is stepping away from golf to “seek treatment” after his DUI arrest, which resulted in charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a blood alcohol level (BAL) test after law enforcement said his vehicle collided with another while he drove impaired.

Woods released the statement after entering a plea of not guilty, waiving his right to an arraignment and demanding a trial with a jury Tuesday.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said in a statement posted on social media.

“I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

Woods was found with prescription opioids in his pocket, which the bodycam footage showed. Deputies with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office reported observing several signs of impairment after the crash. They noted Woods was “sweating profusely,” his movements appeared “lethargic and slow” and his eyes were “bloodshot and glassy” and “extremely dilated” after he removed his sunglasses.

Deputies conducted field sobriety tests with Woods as he sat on the bumper of a car, and one deputy had her finger in the air as Woods, while hiccupping, tried to follow with his eyes.

This arrest marked Woods’ second DUI arrest within the last decade. In 2017, he was taken into custody, also in Jupiter Island, after taking prescription drugs and falling asleep behind the wheel of a running car at 3 a.m.

Woods was also involved in a 2021 rollover crash that resulted in serious leg injuries and emergency surgeries, which is what he was alluding to during the field sobriety tests.

Woods also signed up for the U.S. Senior Open, according to The Golf League teammate Kevin Kisner, which is scheduled for early July.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The wife of NBA player Jaden Ivey has disputed claims that she “abandoned” him after he was waived following comments in which he criticized pride month, citing his Christian faith.

Caitlin Ivey, who has had two children with her husband, made a post on her Instagram story on Wednesday in response to comments from social media users who have accused her of “abandoning” Jaden.

“These DMs (and many more) over one lie spoken on my name,” she wrote. “If you know me, you know I have never once abandoned that man through all the trials … and I still haven’t now. There is obviously a lot more going on, so leave your conspiracies and guesses to yourselves.”

Jaden himself made claims during an Instagram livestream that his wife had been watching his broadcast without speaking to him after the controversy involving his anti-pride month remarks erupted.

“Those who are around me, those who are my family members betraying because of what I spoke. The truth. Betraying me. Saying that I’m losing my mind. Saying that I’m crazy. These are my own family members, my blood. ‘Man, he’s psycho. He’s this, he’s that.’ Those are my own household,” Jaden said. “That’s why my wife in here, and she not even texting me.”

The Bulls claimed Ivey was waived for “conduct detrimental to the team” after he made the comments critical of pride month.

In a series of Instagram live posts, Ivey gave his thoughts on being waived by the Bulls.

“They’re liars, bro. This is lying,” Ivey said in one Instagram live. “They’re lying saying my conduct is detrimental to the team. That’s a lie. Ask any one of them coaches in there, ‘Was I a good teammate?’ All I’m preaching about is Jesus Christ and they waived me. They say I’m crazy, right? I’m psycho.

“They gonna try to stop me but I’m not, I’m going to keep speaking the truth. That’s why everybody around me turning their back on me because of my faith. I didn’t get myself waived. I was in the gym today, I was rehabbing, lifting, and doing what was required of me in my job… I could’ve quit on my own self but they kicked me out.”

Ivey later spoke about his addiction to pornography and how Christianity helped him overcome it.

“Before I came to the Lord Jesus Christ, the NBA was everything to me,” Ivey said in one livestream. “I didn’t know God. I didn’t know Jesus when I came to the NBA. I was a fornicator, I was a pornography addict and I used to get drunk. That’s all I knew. And after a win, and after all those points, I felt good… I felt like I had everything set out for me.”

Ivey also appeared to criticize Steph Curry and LeBron James, questioning their devotion to Christianity.

“That’s why you got Steph Curry… he don’t know Jesus, and I pray he comes to the truth, that him and his family be saved in Jesus’ name… ” Ivey said. “All them rings he got, all them rings LeBron got, all them rings Michael Jordan got, all them people in the Hall of Fame who don’t know Jesus Christ — No. It’s not gonna matter on Judgment Day if you don’t know Jesus and your name is not written in the book of life.”

Ivey’s video calling out the league was posted on Monday morning, as he said it was “unrighteousness” that the NBA would celebrate pride month.

“The world can proclaim LGBTQ, right?” Ivey said in that video. “They proclaim pride month and the NBA. They proclaim it. They show it to the world. They say, ‘Come join us for pride month to celebrate unrighteousness.’ They proclaim it. They proclaim it on the billboards. They proclaim in the streets. Unrighteousness. So, how is it that one can’t speak righteousness? Who are they to say that this man is crazy?”

Ivey also said in a different video that Catholicism was a “false religion,” which comes as a potential issue for Ivey’s mother.

Ivey was the fifth overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft by the Pistons, who hoped he would be a key piece in their rebuild. He was solid to start his career, making the 2022-23 NBA All-Rookie team after averaging 16.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game, while shooting 41.6% from the field.

Ivey was traded to the Bulls as part of a three-team deal involving his previous Detroit Pistons and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He posted a career-high 17.6 points per game during the 2024-25 campaign, as the Purdue product looked to be hitting his stride.

However, Ivey saw a regression in his production this year, primarily playing off the bench for the Pistons before the trade.

Mavericks’ Cooper Flagg admits rookie season has been ‘mentally taxing’ amid the team’s struggles

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Cooper Flagg’s first season in the NBA has not gone as planned and the rookie admitted it’s been tough.

Flagg, 19, has had considerable personal success this season and is in contention for the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award. However, the Dallas Mavericks have not had much success, as they are 24-52 and nowhere near playoff contention.

“Obviously, it’s been tough. Like you said, you know, through high school, college, I mean, I only lost four games last year. So there have been times of the season where it’s been, you know, really mentally taxing on me,” Flagg said during a recent appearance on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Flagg hopes that he can look back at the tough times and say he learned from them.

“Just not having success that I would’ve hoped for, and obviously, we’ve had a lot of injuries and a lot of unfortunate things happen throughout the year. It’s obviously not been ideal. I’ve had growth along the way, and I’ve had to get better and learn on the fly, but definitely not the start I would’ve looked for. Hopefully, eventually I’ll be able to look back on it and know that I was able to learn a lot from it,” Flagg said.

Flagg said he was thrown out there and into the fire more than he was expected, but he said it’s helped him develop and become more confident and comfortable.
