Call of the Wilde: Canadiens extend winning streak to eight games in New Jersey shootout – Montreal | Globalnews.ca

The Montreal Canadiens late-season success is the talk of the hockey world. They went into a home-and-home series with the New Jersey Devils this weekend with seven straight victories. The Devils hosted the Saturday’s opener, and Montreal extended its streak to eight games, winning an absolute thriller 4-3 in a shootout.

Wilde Horses

All the talk these days is about the Canadiens top line and deservedly so, but this contest had an important development on the second line.

Alex Newhook, Oliver Kapanen and Ivan Demidov have been defending too much in the last couple weeks. They are talented when they get in the offensive zone, but they haven’t been in that area of the ice enough. Against the Devils, they dominated the first period. They had an Expected Goals shot share of 75 per cent. They finished with a 60 Corsi.

Story continues below advertisement

Ivan Demidov was the most noticeable of the three. He is levelling up in a massive way right now. It hasn’t translated to big nights on the scoreboard yet, but scoreboard victories start with possession victories. Puck-battling is a vital skill,  and a player can’t do great things, if he can’t win the disk. That’s where the magic starts.

It’s becoming nearly impossible to take the puck off Demidov. He dangles it with such talent and efficiency, and he’s starting to realize that opposing players simply cannot take it off him. He has the ability to move through defenders like they’re not even there.

Demidov is also shooting more, which is another strong sign of an increasing comfort level. He would normally defer, but now he is seeing that he has the talent to hold on to the puck and make plays.

Demidov has learned another valuable lesson on the power play this season. He used to stay on the half-wall and wait for a pass to come to him. Generally, he was static, and easily defendable. Recently, he has been moving up and down between the half-wall and moving toward the net.

By doing this, he changes the angles for passes and he loses his defenders more easily. On Saturday, it made him available for a scintillating back-door pass from Cole Caufield, giving Demidov his 60th point of the season on his 17th goal. Nick Suzuki picked up his 95th point of the season on the tally.

Only a minute and change later, Lane Hutson notched his first point of the night as he continues his assault on the record book with his 74th point on his 12th goal. Suddenly, the Canadiens had a 3-0 lead. Hutson said before the season began that he could score more goals. He was right. He’s doubled his total from his rookie season.

Some of the support staff had notably good games, too. Arber Xhekaj is getting more and more comfortable, and Jayden Struble put in a strong performance in addition to scoring his second goal of the season. At forward, Joe Veleno is also playing strong hockey. He’s a hard worker on the forecheck. Zachary Bolduc continues to improve his decision making to help the play progress positively.

The shootout was thrilling, too, with Caufield and Demidov scoring for Montreal with perfect shots. Still, it took five rounds to decide the game, with Oliver Kapanen smoothly going to the five hole to extend the Canadiens winning streak . The Canadiens magic number to make the playoffs is one single point.

Wilde Goats

Saturday’s game was well in command. The Canadiens were up by two goals and were on a four-minute power play. Then they lost their concentration. With the man advantage they gave up consecutive two-on-ones in about 15 seconds. The Devils scored on the second one to get back into the game.

Story continues below advertisement

It’s hard to criticize a club that has won seven consecutive games for poor game management, but in that moment, the Canadiens forgot that a two-goal lead after two periods would be a good result. Certainly, a power play goal at that moment would have been preferred, but the game is yours if it’s managed well. Instead, they gave the Devils life.

All that is positive that can be said about the sloppiness is learn that lesson in the regular season, because in the playoffs, that’s exactly how to lose games.

That shorthanded goal mattered because the Devils tied it with the goalie pulled and two minutes remaining.

Wilde Cards

The line is unstoppable. It is among the best lines in the NHL, and it might just be the best.

Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky have been on an absolute tear since being reunited. It’s been 15 games since head coach Martin St. Louis took Slafkovsky off the second line and put him back with Suzuki and Caufield. They have, in that short time, 30 goals.

Caufield is so hot he is scoring at more than a goal-per-game for almost a half season. He has 28 goals in 27 games. Slafkovsky is having a breakout season looking for his first 30-goal campaign. Suzuki is on the verge of his first 100-point season — and the first for the franchise since Mats Naslund in 1986.

Story continues below advertisement

The Canadiens have fallen short offensively for a long time. The last time they were truly powerful offensively was 1993. That was the last time they had a 100-goal line with Kirk Muller, Vincent Damphousse and Brian Bellows. They counted 110 goals the season they won the cup.

The numbers for this year’s top line are impressive, but they are even more impressive when compared to the rest of the league. With Caufield’s 49 goals this season, Slafkovsky’s 29 and Suzuki’s 27, they are at 105 goals in total. That compares quite favourable to the best lines in the league.

Nathan MacKinnon with Martin Necas and Artturi Lehkonen have 105 goals. Anthony Cirelli with Brandon Hagel and Nikita Kucherov have 99 goals. Mark Scheifele with Gabe Vilardi and Kyle Connor have 96 goals.

The only caveat for the Suzuki line is that they weren’t together all season to achieve these totals. That says that they could do even better if they were always together. It makes it an exciting proposition for next season when the organization hopes it can find a strong second line. That way, it won’t  have to tinker with the chemistry of the top line to find balance.

The other three top lines this season that will eclipse the 100-goal plateau all have one thing in common that the Canadiens line doesn’t. They are all veteran players at the height of their powers. The oldest member of the Canadiens line is 26. They’re just getting started.

Dodgers place Mookie Betts on injured list, call up Hyeseong Kim

The Dodgers placed star shortstop Mookie Betts on the injured list Sunday with an oblique strain.

Second-year infielder Hyeseong Kim was called up from triple-A to replace him on the roster.

The roster move comes after Betts left Saturday’s game in the first inning, when he felt something in his back while running from first base to score on a Freddie Freeman double.

Betts went for an MRI later Saturday night, and was expected to miss at least the “next couple days,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Now, he will be sidelined for at least 10 days, representing the team’s first injury loss since the start of the regular season.

In Betts’ absence, Roberts said Miguel Rojas and Alex Freeland would likely share time at shortstop. They had previously been platooning at second base, and figure to remain in the mix for playing time there, too.

However, with Kim now back on the roster, he could be in line for regular playing time at that spot.

Despite a strong start to his rookie season last year, Kim struggled down the stretch, was used only as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement in the playoffs, and then failed to make the Opening Day roster this spring amid a continued swing makeover.

The 27-year-old has started the season well down in triple-A, batting .346 (9-for-26) with a double, two RBIs and four walks. Importantly, his strikeout rate has been better too, punching out just seven times in his first 32 plate appearances.

That will be the goal for Kim now: Trying to work good at-bats, play up to his contact-first skillset and use his speed and defensive strengths to make positive contributions.

Just eight games into the season, the Dodgers will need it to navigate their first impact injury.

NHL fan goes into labor during Oilers game against Golden Knights, broadcaster says

An NHL fan at Rogers Place to watch the Edmonton Oilers take on the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday gave birth in the arena during the game, according to a broadcaster.

Oilers play-by-play man Jack Michaels made the revelation as Sportsnet came back on air for the start of the third period.

“Breaking news, we have word that someone has gone into labor here tonight,” Michaels said. “There’s a baby being born on the seventh floor at Rogers Place as we speak. So, someone is going to have a great story to tell. It would be nice to have them join us on ‘After Hours’ to describe what’s happened but that could be asking a bit much.”

There was no more information given about the baby, including the child’s name. Perhaps Edmond or Edmund could be a fitting name if the child is a boy.

Meanwhile, the Oilers fell to the Golden Knights, 5-1. Brett Howden and Jeremy Lauzon each had a goal and an assist. Colton Sissons, Mark Stone and Rasmus Andersson had a goal each as well.

Vegas goaltender Carter Hart made 31 saves in the victory as the team remained perfect since John Tortorella was named head coach.

Both teams are in the midst of a division title race. Edmonton maintained a slim lead over the Anaheim Ducks with five games left in the season. Each team has 87 points on the year.

With the win, Vegas moved a point back behind both teams.

UConn’s Dan Hurley hears boos after Final Four win over Illinois

UConn Huskies men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley celebrated with his team after advancing to the national championship with a victory over the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday.

But not everyone in the Indianapolis crowd was excited to see Hurley get back to the title game for the third time in four years.

Hurley was getting ready to speak to CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson. When freshman Braylon Mullins wrapped up his talk, Hurley headbutted the player appearing to call back to his interaction with a referee immediately after the win over the Duke Blue Devils.

The crowd booed Hurley as he stepped up to the mic.

“The start to the game and the finish to the game,” Hurley began to say about Mullins with the boos being picked up on the CBS broadcast. “I don’t know what … are they booing? The headbutt? I don’t know what they’re booing.”

Hurley’s intensity has drawn criticism and praise from college basketball fans. Since he took over the UConn job from Kevin Ollie before the 2018-19 season, he’s helped the Huskies regain national prominence.

ILLINOIS KNOCKS OFF IOWA TO REACH FINAL FOUR AFTER BUZZER MALFUNCTION DELAY

He’s only had one losing season with the Huskies – his first year in which they went 16-17. It was a two-year improvement for the school that was hit with sanctions for the last two years of Ollie’s tenure.

Now, he’s doing something that no coach has done in a very long time – getting back to the national title game quickly. Roy Williams got back to the national final in two straight years with the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2016 and 2017. Brad Stevens led the Butler Bulldogs to back-to-back appearances in 2010 and 2011. Billy Donovan won two-in-a-row in 2006 and 2007.

The last coach to have three appearances in four years was Mike Krzyzewski with Duke, but he went to three straight from 1990 to 1992. He won two of those titles in 1991 and 1992.

Megan Rapinoe rips IOC’s new policy to protect women’s sports, rejects notion rule is based in science

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Former U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe ripped the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for implementing a new policy to ensure fairness across women’s competitions.

The IOC said “eligibility for any female category event at the Olympic Games or any other IOC event, including individual and team sports, is now limited to biological females, determined on the basis of a one‑time SRY gene screening.”

Megan Rapinoe rips IOC’s new policy to protect women’s sports, rejects notion rule is based in science

(Andrew Thomas/CNP for Fox News Digital)

The organization added that the policy was “evidence-based” and “expert-informed.” The testing can be conducted via saliva, cheek swab or blood sample.

A presentation at a World Athletics panel in Tokyo in September revealed that 50 to 60 athletes with male biological advantages have been finalists in the female category at global and continental championships since 2000.

The panel was led by the head of the World Athletics Health and Science Department, Dr. Stéphane Bermon, who said sex tests were necessary because of an “over-representation” of DSD (differences of sex development) athletes among finalists, per multiple reports.

However, Rapinoe rejected the policy in the latest issue of her “A Touch More” podcast.

“Unfortunately, we have to say that all in the same breath as a really horrible rule came out from the International Olympic Committee,” Rapinoe said as she praised the transgender community. “They announced a new policy that they’re calling, I can’t even believe that they’re calling it this because it has nothing to do with protecting women, I feel like two people, who played at the very highest level for every competition that you possibly could, don’t agree with this and never felt like this was an issue at all, ‘The Protection of the Female [Women’s] Category.’”

Rapinoe dismissed the notion that the policy was rooted in science and said that the IOC was subjecting women to “invasive testing.”

OLYMPIANS REACT TO THE IOC POLICY CHANGE TO PROTECT WOMEN’S SPORTS

“We already know that biology, as much as we want it to be just nice and clean and tight and perfectly in one category and another, it’s not,” Rapinoe said. “We know that. So, now what we’re doing is subjecting everybody, all women and all people who are identifying as women to this really invasive testing that only to me says like, ‘Oh we’re just trying to whittle it down to a certain type of woman. Is that what we’re doing? That’s really the whole game here.

“They sort of lost the battle on gay marriage and lost the battle on all these things so it’s just like, ‘We’re gonna have this whole campaign for all these years to just hate trans people,’ which is such a small percentage of the population. It’s actually on a single hand when we’re talking about sports. And just like thread the absolute tightest needle thread that you possibly could.”

Rapinoe added that the IOC only implemented the rule to appease President Donald Trump’s administration.

“This committee is framing it as based in science, which it’s not,” she said. “This will ultimately just prevent people from competing within the women’s category that they feel like they have an unfair advantage. It’s just really hateful. There’s been so few athletes that are trans or competing as trans and it’s so blatant on its face. It’s a total acquiescence to the Trump administration and to really right-wing conservative politics that really is just bringing down so much hate against such a small percentage of people who are just trying to live their life. It’s just horrible and I’m just sickened by it, really.”

Conversely, several Olympians supported the IOC’s decision.

Kaillie Humphries, a three-time Olympic gold medalist for the U.S. and Canada, was among them.

“Today is a great day for women’s sports and a big win in the Olympic world,” she told Fox News Digital last month. “By implementing the sex testing, it will allow for fair competition. It used to happen years ago, and by bringing it back it will protect the women’s category. I think it’s very fitting that LA28 will be the games to protect women’s sports as it’s something that our president has advocated for.”

Vegas’s bet on Tortorella looking good so far | Globalnews.ca

EDMONTON – Betting on John Tortorella as a late-season replacement for head coach continues to pay off for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Call of the Wilde: Canadiens extend winning streak to eight games in New Jersey shootout – Montreal | Globalnews.ca

Jack Eichel had three assists as the Golden Knights came away with a huge 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Brett Howden and Jeremy Lauzon each had a goal and an assist and Colton Sissons, Mark Stone and Rasmus Andersson also scored for the Golden Knights (35-26-16) who have won all three games since Tortorella replaced Bruce Cassidy on the bench and are 3-0-2 in their last five contests.

“I think we’re buying into the mindset of just playing fast hockey, checking, moving our feet and playing teams really tight and aggressively and getting up in people’s faces,” Sissons said. “We’re kind of building our confidence back and our swag in that department, so it’s been good.”

Vegas moved one point back of both Edmonton and Anaheim, who share first place in the Pacific Division standings.

“I think we’re consistently trying to play fast, certainly playing north. We had a lot of good minutes tonight,” said Tortorella, who joined Cassidy and Gerard Gallant as the third coach in Golden Knights history to record wins in their first three games as Vegas bench boss.

Hart recorded 31 saves to earn the win for Vegas.

“He just looks solid,” Tortorella said. “I know nothing about goaltending, but you can tell when a goaltender feels big. He looked big to me, he just feels solid and made some key saves at key times. He made a couple of saves on the power play, so it was good.”

Lauzon hadn’t scored in 112 games, stretching back to Feb. 22, 2024.

“It was a great moment. I was waiting for it for a long time,” Lauzon said. “I thought our team played unbelievable tonight and it’s a huge win for our club.”

Ivan Barbashev had two assists to give him 200 in his career.

Eichel assisted on the opening goal to help him reach his second-straight 80-point season. No other player has reached the mark for the Vegas franchise. Eichel also recorded his 95th multi-point game, tying Jonathan Marchessault for the second most in franchise history behind Mark Stone with 102, and his 25th three-point game with Vegas, tying Marchessault for second with the franchise, again behind Stone (31).

The Golden Knights were in need of a win against the Oilers, having lost all three of their previous games to them this season and nine of their last 10 overall, including falling in five games to Edmonton in the second round of last year’s playoffs.

“Everybody has bought in,” Sissons said. “We knew the level of urgency that we needed to come out and play a tough game on the road. It’s a tough place to play, against a rival and I think everybody showed up and I’m proud of the effort.”

The Vegas win also represented Edmonton’s first loss in regulation time to a divisional rival at home this season, falling to 9-1-2.

Evan Bouchard scored the lone goal for the Oilers (39-29-9) who saw a season-high five-game win streak come to an end.

“They could have been, what, five points (back)? Now it’s one, right? So, yeah, pretty big,” said Oilers forward Trent Frederic, who retained his sense of humour when asked how the players reacted in the locker room after the loss.

“It’s just bickering back and forth, everyone telling everyone they make too much money. Which is all true. Sounds like a lot of people are jealous.”

Edmonton played without star forwards Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman.

Vince McMahon faces graphic sexual abuse allegations in new court filing from ex-WWE employee

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A former WWE employee who is suing the company and its former CEO, Vince McMahon, made new and graphic allegations in a filing in the U.S. District Court of Connecticut earlier this week.

Janel Grant, who filed her initial lawsuit against WWE, McMahon and former executive John Laurinaitis, detailed more claims about how she was allegedly recruited to work for WWE, the alleged “abuse” she received while WWE leaders allegedly did nothing and other assertions.

Laurinaitis was previously removed from the lawsuit.

Fox News Digital reached out to McMahon’s lawyer and WWE for comment.

Grant, who worked at WWE from June 2019 to 2022, alleged that she was “subjected to repeated physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault, and sexual trafficking perpetrated” by McMahon and “most senior officials and talent, knew about and facilitated the abuse” she experienced.

“Instead of protecting Ms. Grant, WWE and McMahon conspired to use his coercive control over her to conceal its leaders’ wrongdoing and bar Ms. Grant from speaking out or seeking help,” the lawsuit read.

Grant made allegations of having “violent” sexual encounters with McMahon and others.

“Throughout the three years, sex was violent, invasive, degrading, and produced injuries that could not heal because there would consistently be subsequent violent encounters, often involving other men or objects,” the lawsuit read. “Ms. Grant did not raise a complaint concerning her abuse because she lived in a state of duress and was fully under McMahon’s control, her survival ultimately depending on her complete submission to McMahon.”

Grant claimed in the lawsuit that McMahon pressured her to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and that he allegedly sexually assaulted after she signed the document.

The sordid allegations are a part of an ongoing lawsuit between the parties.

McMahon stepped down as the CEO of WWE in 2022, and stepped down from TKO in 2024 after the initial lawsuit was filed. He has maintained his innocence through the process.

“The Complaint’s outrageous claims of sexual abuse and coercion are pure fiction—plainly intended to garner publicity—and are flatly contradicted by Plaintiff’s own contemporaneous statements,” McMahon said in an April 2024 filing. “Contrary to Plaintiff’s false allegations, Plaintiff and Defendant (collectively, the ‘Parties’) engaged in a consensual relationship during which Defendant never coerced Plaintiff into doing anything and never mistreated her in any way.

“In fact, in a love letter Plaintiff wrote to Defendant shortly before the Parties ended their relationship, Plaintiff described Defendant as ‘[m]y best friend, my love and my everything,’ praising him for being the ‘wonderful, tender, vulnerable, heart-on-your-sleeve soul you really are.’ It is incredulous that Plaintiff, a then 42-year-old woman who claims on her resume to have a law degree from Pace University, would have written these words to Defendant months after all the events in the Complaint of alleged abuse, coercion, and ‘sex-trafficking’ took place.”

TKO Group told The Associated Press in January 2024 it took Grant’s allegations “very seriously.”

“Mr. McMahon does not control TKO nor does he oversee the day-to-day operations of WWE,” the company said at the time. “While this matter pre-dates our TKO executive team’s tenure at the company, we take Ms. Grant’s horrific allegations very seriously and are addressing this matter internally.”

Clark missed the game with an upper body injury, as did Knights defenceman Linus Funck.

London goaltender Seb Gatto did not dress due to a lower body injury.

Will Nicholl signs entry-level deal with Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers selected Will Nicholl of the London Knights in the seventh round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

Nicholl was selected 196th overall that year. The majority of players  drafted ahead of him — 118 in total —have yet to sign their first deal.

Nicholl is a two-time Ontario Hockey League champion and a Memorial Cup champion. If there was an award for most positive player in hockey you would see Nicholl as a nominee, too.

He was honoured at this season’s London Knights awards ceremony as the 2025-26 Player’s Player, which is chosen by a player’s teammates.

Nicholl missed 36 games this year while recovering from off-season surgery but still managed to score 15 goals and 26 points.

Nicholl will be eligible to join the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors at the conclusion of his season in London.

The Condors are captained by former Knight Seth Griffith.

The Buffalo Sabres have done it.

They ended the longest playoff drought in NHL history on Saturday.

With the New York Rangers’ 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, the Sabres clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2011.

It has been a long stretch of bad hockey in Buffalo prior to this season. Just once in the last 14 seasons, they have had more than 90 points once in a season.

They have been a mainstay at the top of the NHL Draft, owning the respective No. 1 and No. 2 selections twice while owning a top 10 pick in 11 different drafts.

In the beginning of December, it looked like this season would be no different than the others, as the team started out with an 11-14-4 record. However, the team rattled off a 10-game winning streak after beating the Edmonton Oilers.

After winning the third game of that streak, they fired general manager Kevyn Adams and hired Jarmo Kekäläinen. Since hiring Kekäläinen, the Sabres have been an NHL-best 32-8-4.

While the team has clinched a playoff berth, the Sabres still have to play for playoff seeding.

They currently are tied for the first place in the Atlantic Division with the Tampa Bay Lightning, as they each have 100 points, but the Sabres have played one more game. The Montreal Canadiens, currently in third place in the Atlantic Division, are right behind them with 98 points.

The Sabres will take on the Washington Capitals at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday night as they look to shore up their seeding for the playoffs.
