What our Post expert thinks about the Masters

The past four winners at Augusta have come from the top of the betting board. Last year’s champion, Rory McIlroy, teed off as a +650 second-favorite. The previous iteration saw Scheffler win as a 5/1 favorite. Jon Rahm took home the title at 10/1 in 2023, and Scheffler captured his first Green Jacket as the third choice in 2022.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a surprising winner, but Augusta has produced plenty in the past.

Trevor Immelman, Angel Cabrera, Zach Johnson, and Charl Schwartzel all won as triple-digit long shots between 2007 and 2011, and Danny Willett came from nowhere when he took home the trophy in 2016.

2026 Valspar Championship predictions: PGA Tour odds, picks for Copperhead

The PGA Tour’s Florida Swing comes to an end with a trip to Copperhead for the 2026 Valspar Championship.

This year’s journey through the Sunshine State has certainly delivered. All three tournaments on the famously chaotic Florida Swing have featured Sunday collapses, with Ludvig Aberg becoming the latest victim.

The Swede had a two-shot lead as he stood on the 11th fairway at last week’s PLAYERS Championship. He finished T5, allowing Cameron Young to storm from behind to collect the biggest win of his career.

The chaos should only continue this week as we head to the Snake Pit.

Xander Schauffele is a lukewarm 11/1 favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook, with last week’s runner-up, Matt Fitzpatrick (13/1), and defending champion Viktor Hovland (17/1) also inside 20/1.

This tournament does tend to produce surprising winners, most recently Peter Malnati as a 350/1 long shot in 2024, so we’ll bypass the top of the board and try to catch lightning in a bottle at a course that is made for it.

Wyndham Clark (60/1, FanDuel)

It’s been a quiet season for Wyndham Clark, but his resume stands out in this range.

The 32-year-old is a three-time PGA Tour champion, with one of his wins coming at the 2023 U.S. Open and the other two at signature events. He won’t be intimidated by a tough course or a decent field, and he’s also proven to be a terrific closer, which is vital in these conditions.

This will be Clark’s fifth trip to Copperhead as a pro, and while the results are a mixed bag, he did finish T5 in his last start here in 2023.

John Parry (110/1, bet365)

It’s fair to be hesitant to back a debutant on a treacherous course like Copperhead, but John Parry is off to a flying start as a PGA Tour rookie.

The Yorkshireman has yet to miss a cut (8-for-8) and just turned some heads with a T8 finish at THE PLAYERS, also on debut.

The numbers suggest that Parry’s start is legit. Although he’s had some issues putting, the two-time European Tour winner currently leads the varsity circuit in greens in regulation. If he can bring that accuracy with him to Innisbrook, he’ll have a chance to hang around the leaderboard at a terrific price.

2026 Valspar Championship predictions: PGA Tour odds, picks for Copperhead

Billy Horschel (110/1, bet365)

We finally got a glimpse at the good version of Billy Horschel two weeks ago.

The eight-time PGA Tour winner had a pretty sluggish start to 2026 with two missed cuts and one top-30 finish in his first six starts, but he put things together at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, finishing T13 on a tough track, and now heads to a course that has been kind to him in recent years.

Horschel finished fourth at last year’s Valspar and was 12th in 2024, so Copperhead clearly jives with the 39-year-old’s game. That shouldn’t be a shock considering Horschel is a Florida native, went to college in Gainesville, and currently resides in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Mackenzie Hughes (120/1, bet365)

Having a short game that can get you out of trouble is imperative at Copperhead, and Mackenzie Hughes has that in spades.

The Canadian won’t blow you away off the tee, and he’s certainly not the type to drop a pin from the fairway, but his short game is magical.

His volatility off the tee makes him a boom-or-bust player, but Hughes seems to have taken a liking to Florida golf. He’s had some strong showings in recent years during the Florida Swing, most notably a third-place finish at this event in 2024.

2026 NCAA Tournament odds: Michigan and Duke top the betting board after bracket released

The bracket is out, which means it’s time for madness.

The Selection Committee established Duke as the No. 1 overall seed for the 2026 NCAA Tournament, which is not exactly in line with the bookmakers at bet365 Sportsbook, who have Michigan at the top of the odds ahead of Round 1.

That said, the gap between the Wolverines, Blue Devils, and third-favorite Arizona is extremely narrow.

Duke, which started the season at 14/1, is +325 to win the title, while Michigan, which was 20/1 before the season started, is down to +340 after the bracket was released.

Arizona is right behind them at +425.

Defending champions Florida is +700 to repeat. No other team boasts single-digit odds.

2026 NCAA Tournament odds

  • Michigan +325
  • Duke +340
  • Arizona +425
  • Florida +700
  • Houston 10/1
  • Connecticut 20/1
  • Illinois 22/1
  • Iowa State 22/1
  • Purdue 40/1
  • Michigan State 45/1
  • Kansas 50/1
  • St. John’s 50/1
  • Gonzaga 55/1
  • Arkansas 60/1

Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars are 10/1, putting them in a range of their own, as there is no other team under 20/1.

UConn, winners of two of the last three NCAA Tournaments, is 20/1 after finishing runner-up at the Big East Tournament to St. John’s. UConn is the No. 2 seed in the East Region.

Speaking of the Red Storm, they are down to 50/1 after winning their second Big East title in a row. The Johnnies were handed a No. 5 seed and will play Northern Iowa in Round 1.

Betting on College Basketball?

St. John’s isn’t the only notable long shot to keep an eye on over the next few days.

Arkansas, which won the SEC Championship after defeating Vanderbilt, is a tempting price at 60/1.

Tom Izzo’s Michigan State will also get some betting support at 45/1 after landing as a No. 3 seed in the East region.

Purdue, which was the betting favorite before the season started, is 40/1 after being handed a No. 2 seed. The Boilermakers upset Michigan in the Big Ten Championship.

Team USA vs. Dominican Republic prediction: Odds, picks, best for World Baseball Classic semifinals

The odds for Sunday’s World Baseball Classic semifinal between Team USA and the Dominican Republic could hardly be tighter.

The Stars and Stripes are a -125 favorite over the Dominican Republic, which essentially makes this game at loanDepot Park in Miami a coin flip.

Paul Skenes will get the start for the Americans, while the Dominican Republic will counter with Luis Severino.

Team USA vs. Dominican Republic odds, prediction

The USA may be the favorite to win this game, and the tournament, but they have not been the most impressive team in this competition. That honor belongs to the Dominican Republic.

Powered by a relentless offense, the Dominicans have yet to lose a game, and they’ve outscored their opponents by an aggregate scoreline of 51-10.

You can call into question the quality of opposition that the Dominican Republic has faced, but you can only play who is in front of you, and averaging better than 10 runs per contest is an accomplishment against any schedule.

Whether the Dominicans can keep up that pace against Paul Skenes is another question entirely.

Team USA vs. Dominican Republic prediction: Odds, picks, best for World Baseball Classic semifinals
Juan Soto of the Dominican Republic celebrates. Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

The Americans won’t ask Skenes to completely shut out an offense that is headlined by Juan Soto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Julio Rodriguez, and Manny Machado, but if the Pittsburgh Pirates ace can keep a lid on the Dominicans, the pendulum swings in the Americans’ favor.

While the Dominicans are built to get ahead and stay ahead, the Americans bring a little bit more to the table in a lower-scoring, chess-match style contest.

There’s still plenty of game-breaking pop in the American lineup, but they can apply pressure in a variety of ways outside of the threat of the long ball. Luis Severino will have his hands full trying to navigate the sluggers in the heart of the order, but the Stars and Stripes can also play a bit of small-ball if the situation calls for it.

The lineups may be a wash, but the pitching matchup favors Team USA, and I think the Americans simply have more paths to victory than the Dominican Republic does in this specific matchup.

You can feel comfortable laying a bit of juice with Team USA on Sunday, or just play them to win the tournament at +140.

The Play: Team USA moneyline (-125, bet365 Sportsbook)

Experts warn surge in online sports betting is drawing teens into gambling | Globalnews.ca

Online sports betting is emerging as a growing digital distraction among adolescents, particularly teenage boys, experts warn.

Experts warn surge in online sports betting is drawing teens into gambling | Globalnews.ca

The multi-billion-dollar industry is expanding rapidly as betting platforms become increasingly accessible through smartphone apps. Online gambling is expected to generate US$8.7 billion by 2030, up from US$3.9 billion in 2024, according to data compiled by Grand View Research, with sports betting registering the fastest growth.

“You can just turn on your phone and then all of a sudden you can be betting hundreds of dollars,” student Alex Bergman from Montreal’s Dawson College told Global News on Thursday.

Another student at the college, who asked not to be identified, said he lost $2,000 through online betting, including sports gambling.

“It’s so accessible. And it feels like when you’re not gambling, you’re missing out on making money, and you just have this urge to keep gambling,” he said.

Study says more Ontario male teens and men seeking help for gambling problems

Dr. Jeff Derevensky of McGill University, director of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-risk Behaviours, says sports betting among youths is becoming an epidemic.

“I think we need to raise more awareness as a public health issue and as a mental health issue,” Derevensky told Global News in an interview. He says stronger regulations are needed.

“Advertising, accessibility, availability will breed more individuals with gambling problems,” he said.

Rabbi Benjamin Bresinger runs Chabad Lifeline, a treatment and counselling centre for youth with at-risk behaviour and addiction. He says families are increasingly seeking help for teenagers hooked on online gambling, particularly sports betting.

“Boys between the ages of 12 and 16, that’s where it’s really taken off,” he said.

Experts say part of the appeal comes from slick advertising campaigns from a growing number of online sports betting websites and apps, some featuring high-profile celebrities and athletes.

‘Micro-betting’ concerns

In Ontario, a study published earlier this month said the rate of young men contacting Ontario’s mental health helpline for gambling-related problems has increased by more than 300 per cent after the province allowed private online gambling.

Story continues below advertisement

The researchers behind the study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal said the findings showed a need for stronger harm-reduction measures and more access to treatment.

Dr. Daniel Myran, a research chair at North York General Hospital who co-authored the study, said the study includes concerns around micro-betting and other types of gambling that are associated with higher risk of addiction.

“Let’s say that you bet on the outcome of the Super Bowl. It’s one bet that you’ve made. But you can now actually bet on events that occur within the game itself,” he said.

“That means that if you lose money, you might do what’s called loss chasing, where you try and re-wager it to win more, and it can really accelerate people into gambling disorders.”

Myran noted there has been a higher volume of gambling marketing since the privatization of betting in the province.

“I think that we need to think very carefully about who these ads are reaching and the messages that they’re conveying,” he said.

“When we see that the visits or the contacts have really gone up in young men, I think that this is exactly who’s being targeted by the advertisements and who’s going to be placing sports bets.”

He said the study’s findings underscore why gambling disorders need to be treated as a public health issue and treatment should be readily available.

What our Post expert thinks about Knicks vs. Clippers

The Knicks are playing the second game of a back-to-back set in Los Angeles after losing an ugly game against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena. There will be no rest for the weary as they head to Inglewood for a meeting with the new-look Clippers.

The Clippers have clawed their way back to respectability this season after a terrible start to their campaign. They enter this game just one game below .500 and have won four of their past five games.

Adding Bennedict Mathurin and Darius Garland has given them the youth and scoring they lacked before the trade deadline. Those additions alongside Kawhi Leonard make the Clippers much more dangerous than their record suggests.

What our Post expert thinks about World Baseball Classic

The Dominican Republic has an explosive lineup, along with a rotation that still has plenty of power arms, even without Framber Valdez and Freddy Peralta. But it really comes down to the bullpen — if guys like Seranthony Domínguez and Camilo Doval can throw strikes and limit the walks, the Dominicans have the talent to bounce back from their 2023 disappointment and win this.

Japan’s path to another title hinges on how its rotation holds up without Shohei Ohtani, Yu Darvish and Roki Sasaki taking the mound. There’s still plenty of talent led by Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Yusei Kikuchi, but with less depth than in 2023, Japan likely needs Yamamoto to be dominant again if it wants to repeat.

More young men contacting Ontario gambling helpline, new study finds | Globalnews.ca

The rate of young men contacting Ontario’s mental health helpline for gambling-related problems has increased by more than 300 per cent after the province allowed private online gambling, a new study suggests.

Experts warn surge in online sports betting is drawing teens into gambling | Globalnews.ca

The researchers behind the study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday say the findings represent a need for stronger harm-reduction measures and more access to treatment.

The study analyzed the number of contacts to ConnexOntario, the province’s free 24-hour mental health and addictions helpline, for gambling-related concerns from January 2012 to September 2025.

It noted an increase after January 2015, when the government launched the gambling platform PlayOLG, as well as after the province expanded private online gambling in April 2022.

Over the 13-year period researchers looked at, ConnexOntario was contacted more than 745,700 times, the study said, and about 37,000 of those contacts were gambling-related.

Story continues below advertisement

The study found that among boys and men aged 15 to 24, the mean monthly rate of gambling-related outreach per million people rose by 317 per cent from the time before Ontario’s launch of PlayOLG to the period after the privatization of online gambling.

The rate increased about 108 per cent over the same time frame for men aged 25 to 44, the study further found. Prior to the policy changes, the rates were stable, it said.

While better awareness of the hotline could be a factor, the spike may not be solely explained by people seeking help for existing problems, said Dr. Daniel Myran, a research chair at North York General Hospital who co-authored the study.

“There’s very good evidence that most people with gambling disorders or gambling problems don’t seek care, and when they do seek care, it’s often through helplines like ConnexOntario,” said Myran.

Story continues below advertisement

“The increases that we’re seeing in these contacts to the helpline — is it the tip of the iceberg of much larger increases in the number of people who are engaged in gambling in harmful patterns?”

Myran noted there has been a higher volume of gambling marketing since the privatization of betting in the province.

“I think that we need to think very carefully about who these ads are reaching and the messages that they’re conveying. And I think we need move to place restrictions on them because they’re right now occurring in venues that are widely seen by youth,” he said.

“When we see that the visits or the contacts have really gone up in young men, I think that this is exactly who’s being targeted by the advertisements and who’s going to be placing sports bets.”

The study further found that between the dawn of online gambling privatization in April 2022 and August of last year, the number of active player accounts per 100,000 people aged 15 or older increased from roughly 2,160 to more than 7,300 — a 239 per cent increase.

Myran added there are concerns around micro-betting and other types of gambling that are associated with higher risk of addiction.

“Let’s say that you bet on the outcome of the Super Bowl. It’s one bet that you’ve made. … But you can now actually bet on events that occur within the game itself,” he said.

Story continues below advertisement

“That means that if you lose money, you might do what’s called loss chasing, where you try and re-wager it to win more, and it can really accelerate people into gambling disorders.”

Ultimately, the study’s findings underscore why gambling disorders need to be treated as a public health issue and treatment should be readily available, said Myran.

“Gambling can have really severe consequences to individuals. People who have gambling disorders are really at high risk of mental health conditions including self-harm and suicide,” said Myran.

“It can also have much broader impacts on families and communities around them,” he added. “I think that we have not adequately considered how some of the changes that have occurred may have much broader health implications for society.”

Now, both head into this game as top-five teams in net rating, with the Spurs ranking No. 3 (6.9) and the Knicks (5.4).

This projects to be a high-scoring affair with both teams ranking within the top-seven of offensive rating and the Knicks averaging 119.3 points at home.
