Champions Cup: Bath beat Saracens to set up quarter-final clash with Northampton Saints

Bath came back from a disappointing first half to progress through to the Champions Cup quarter-finals with a 31-22 win over Saracens; they will face fellow English club Northampton Saints in the quarter-finals at home next weekend

Champions Cup: Bath beat Saracens to set up quarter-final clash with Northampton Saints

Joe Cokanasiga scored Bath’s second try to turn around the game in the second half

Bath turned to a quartet of their England backs to turn the tide as they edged into the Champions Cup quarter-finals with a 31-22 victory over Saracens.

Trailing 10-0 at the interval at the Recreation Ground, the hosts burst into life with tries from Henry Arundell, Joe Cokanasiga, Ben Spencer and Ollie Lawrence as they set up a last-eight appointment at home against Northampton.

Spencer’s 59th-minute finish of an audacious attack that began on their own try-line looked to be pivotal but the determined Saracens refused to throw in the towel and were only truly beaten when Arundell ran in his second try in the 80th minute.

Bath’s scrum needed rescuing after a humbling first half with the introduction of prop Thomas du Toit making the difference with the South African tighthead also being named man of the match.

Unlike their visit to the Recreation Ground a fortnight ago when they were overwhelmed 62-15, it was clear Saracens meant business from the start as they halted an early Bath onslaught including holding up a forward drive over the line.

Having proved their mettle in defence, they surged ahead in the 14th minute when Charlie Bracken deceived Cokanasiga with a dummy from the base of a maul and raced over.

Bath’s scrum was beginning to buckle and they were also suffering at the breakdown, but the visitors were their own worst enemies at times with Fergus Burke failing to find touch with a penalty.

Rhys Carre rampaged into space and Noah Caluori almost crossed in the left corner before Guy Pepper was shown a yellow card for cynically heading the ball away on the floor.

So many elements of Saracens’ game were firing but the points they deserved proved elusive with an Owen Farrell penalty their only other score in a half they had controlled.

Henry Arundell scored Bath's first try

To punish their wastefulness, Arundell sprinted across after being released by Charlie Ewels early in the second half and then Cokanasiga scooped up a loose ball to weave over after Lawrence had carried into space.

The tries sandwiched a dramatic reversal in the scrum with Beno Obano sin-binned for a cumulation of penalties before Du Toit forced a penalty, providing Cokanasiga with the platform to score.

Bath led for the first time and then produced the highlight of the afternoon by stopping Saracens from scoring by dislodging the ball from Andy Onyeama-Christie as he ran at the line before strking with a move that began from their own whitewash.

Cokanasiga escaped the 22, found Alfie Barbeary who waited for Spencer and the England scrum-half had gas to finish from long range.

Maro Itoje and then Ivan van Zyl burst through the breakdown and Saracens were far from done as a period of pressure ended with Max Malins touching down in the left corner.

But Harry Wilson was the next to see yellow for a dangerous tackle on Miles Reid and soon after Lawrence crashed over from close range before Caluori replied for Saracens, but Bath ultimately had the final say at the death through Arundell.

April’s Huge ‘Pink Moon’ Rises This Thursday: The Best Time To See It In The UK

On Thursday, 2 April, the “Pink moon” will rise.

Though it’s likely to be full and bright, unfortunately, the moon probably won’t actually look pink during the event.

But the fourth full moon of the year, which may appear a kind of peachy orange, is still worth a proper good gawk, if you ask us.

Here’s when, where, and how to see it.

When will April’s pink moon rise?

In the UK, it’ll peak at 3:12 am on Thursday, 2 April, 2026.

But it’ll look full for much longer than that. Watch the skies the night of, leading up to, and immediately after that date for an almost-full sight.

Where can I see April’s pink moon in the UK?

The full moon should be visible anywhere without too much light pollution at night.

What will April’s pink moon look like?

OK, it won’t be Barbie pink. But when it’s near the horizon, April’s full moon will look 1) huge and 2) faintly orange.

That’s because, BBC Sky At Night explained, the sunbeams that reach the moon – which is expected to sit quite low in the sky – get filtered by the thicker air of the Earth’s horizon before it rises higher.

It’s quite similar to what happens during a “blood moon,” which, sadly, was not visible in the UK this March.

But we’ve been repaid, I reckon. The moon will look more like a grapefruit in the sky than a tangerine; the same low-down position that gives the moon its orange tint also creates an illusion that makes it seem massive, too.

Why is April’s full moon called a pink moon?

Sadly, the moon’s pale face won’t blush as much as the name might suggest. Instead, the “pink moon” is named after a flower in North America that blooms at the same time April’s full moon typically rises.

It is sometimes also called the sprouting grass moon, the egg moon, and the fish moon.

Adam Gemili: British Olympic sprinter returns to Chelsea academy as speed coach following retirement from athletics

Adam Gemili: British Olympic sprinter returns to Chelsea academy as speed coach following retirement from athletics

Great Britain’s Adam Gemili has announced his retirement from athletics after 14 years at the top of the sport

In the space of a few months, Adam Gemili went from playing for Dagenham and Redbridge academy to becoming World Junior 100m champion and stepping onto the start line at the London 2012 Olympics.

Gemili had left Chelsea’s academy at 15 after training alongside the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and three years later was racing against Jamaican legends Asafa Powell and Yohan Blake at the Olympics.

Now, as the Londoner announces his retirement from athletics, he will be sharing his wisdom with the current Chelsea youngsters as he joins the Premier League club part-time as a speed coach.

Gemili made his Olympic debut at 18 and raced Jamaican Yohan Blake

Gemili made his Olympic debut at 18 and raced Jamaican Yohan Blake

“I dabbled a little bit in athletics, but I didn’t really try properly, and I remember just suddenly getting into the sport in training, and I just picked it up so quickly,” Gemili said.

“I was winning races and next thing I know, six months later, it’s a home Olympics and I’m lining up for GB thinking ‘what am I doing here?’

“Honestly, it the most imposter syndrome I’ve ever had, I was thinking ‘how does this happen to me?’

“Six months prior, no one had ever asked for my autograph or asked for a picture with me and now all of a sudden I’m at a home Olympics.

“Everyone sort of knew who I was, I was the young sprinter on the block, it was a really crazy time, not just for myself, for my family as well.

“I’d seen Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Yohan Blake on the TV, then suddenly, I’m in the call room, looking across and Usain’s sitting there.

“I remember thinking to myself ‘lock in, come on, focus’ – I was fangirling.

“I was in the Olympic Village in London walking around and Serena Williams walked in front of me and I was like ‘what’s happening? I was playing at Dagenham five, six months ago’. I didn’t really feel like I belonged.”

Gemili's major breakthrough into the sport came within three years of leaving the Chelsea academy

Gemili’s major breakthrough into the sport came within three years of leaving the Chelsea academy

Now as Gemili retires with a plentiful collection of medals, including a 4x100m gold from the London World Championships in 2017 and four European golds, he returns to where it all started to help the next generation at Chelsea.

“I’m just a normal guy from Dartford, we didn’t grow up with a lot,” Gemili added. “We just worked hard and I committed to my sport.

“I just hope one or two of them [the academy players] take some inspiration from that and say ‘you know what, it doesn’t matter if I can’t do it in this way, I’ll always find a way to be successful’.

“It doesn’t matter what you do. My story is my own and I hope a lot of these guys can create their own stories.

“I really hope they will go on and become super famous, rich, successful footballers that I can ring up and say ‘oh, I need some tickets for this game’, but the reality is it might not happen.

“But they might then be able to go ‘Adam used to do that and then he became a professional athlete in another sport, maybe I can do that’.

“These kids are so talented, they’re going to be talented no matter what they do – these 12, 13, 14-year-olds, they are just a different breed.

“It’s more brutal to be amongst [academy football] now, social media wasn’t a thing when I was growing up and now everything you do is online.

“Everyone can judge everyone, so the pressure, the performance, you’ve got to be on it.”

Gemili placed fourth at the 2016 Olympics and 2019 World Championships over 200m, and in 2023 in the 4x100m

Gemili placed fourth at the 2016 Olympics and 2019 World Championships over 200m, and in 2023 in the 4x100m

Through his background in football and athletics, Gemili can provide a unique perspective on improving your speed and emphasises that while all sports are different, the key is to learn was ‘fast’ feels like.

He’ll be setting up his own ‘academy’ to help sprinters, footballers, and young athletes from other sports learn how they can optimise their speed.

“Knowledge is power and if I’m able to teach these kids everything that I know, I can die happy,” he added.

“I hope even just one or two of them can feel some sort of inspiration from my story because football is very tough sport – like, I never planned to become an athlete.

“For a lot of these guys they won’t make it to the top level, they won’t make it to the top of the Premier League.

“But if I can teach them the skills that I got, one or two of them might even come into athletics, you never you never really know.”

Home World Championships ‘inspire a nation’

Gemili won gold at the London 2017 World Athletics championships in the 4x100m alongside Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, CJ Ujah and Daniel Talbot

Gemili won gold at the London 2017 World Athletics championships in the 4x100m alongside Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, CJ Ujah and Daniel Talbot

The bidding process for the 2029 World Athletics Championships is ongoing, but British Athletics’ bid has been hit by reports West Ham are yet to agree to the London Stadium’s use.

Gemili said the impact of a home championships cannot be missed, as he reflected back on his experience competing in the stadium in 2012 and at the 2017 World Championships.

“It gives athletes a great opportunity, but also it inspires a city, inspires a nation,” he said.

“Who knows in 10 or 15 years, that moment might make the future because there would definitely have been people in that 2017 stadium that were inspired by performances there that are now on British teams.

“I really hope they can come to an agreement, because sport should be celebrated and – football, athletics – there’s so much joy and brilliance that it brings to people.

“It brings such community in it, and especially London, it brings such a city together when especially over the last couple of years, it’s felt quite divided.”

King of the Swingers! Jack Whitehall’s saucy stag do with James Corden and Jamie Redknapp

Jack Whitehall was on par for a stag night to remember – including stopping off at a cheekily named mini-golf bar called Swingers and visiting a racy club.

The comedian and actor, who is to marry model Roxy Horner in a few weeks, kicked off Saturday’s festivities wearing a golden crown during a six-hour pub crawl through Soho.

He was joined by former footballer Jamie Redknapp, actor and TV presenter James Corden and ex-rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio.

Corden, 47, and Redknapp, 52, were long-time colleagues of Whitehall on Sky’s sports-comedy panel show A League Of Their Own.

Their stag do reunion started at the Devonshire pub at 3pm, where 37-year-old Whitehall was clearly already in high spirits, raising glasses and laughing with his close-knit friends.

Their camaraderie was evident with pictures showing the group laughing and embracing each other.

By 5pm the party had moved to risque cabaret venue The Box in Soho, usually an evening-only venue, for what was thought to be a private show.

At 8.30pm the celebrations took a playful turn with a round of mini-golf at Swingers.

Corden briefly vanished for a couple of hours, sparking speculation that he might have stepped away to put his children to bed before returning to join the group.

The evening then continued at the Soho Hotel bar, with whispers that Whitehall may have been staying there, keeping the group together for late-night drinks.

He and Miss Horner, also 37, got engaged in December 2024 and are already parents to two-year-old daughter Elsie.

Ms Horner, a model and social media influencer, met Whitehall in 2019 through mutual friends.

Sources say their connection was instant, bonding over a shared sense of humour and love of London, quickly becoming inseparable. Despite Whitehall’s high profile, they have kept much of their relationship private.

But preparations for their wedding are said to be in full swing, with Ms Horner trying on dresses, hosting bridesmaid meetings, and planning for her big day.

Whitehall has also been speaking about the wedding during TV appearances.

On The Jonathan Ross Show, he described the nuptials as ‘Downton Abbey meets EastEnders’, highlighting his and Ms Horner’s very different families.

‘My family, and it will come as no surprise to you, are a bunch of gilet-wearing chinless toffs, and her family are proper Cockney, all West Ham fans, proper salt of the earth,’ he said.

Leigh 21-20 Toulouse: Leopards snatch golden-point Super League win after Gareth O’Brien drop goal

Gareth O’Brien came to the rescue with a golden-point drop goal after Leigh Leopards had relinquished a 20-point lead against Toulouse in the Betfred Super League; Josh Charnley and Innes Senior starred early on before Toulouse’s fightback was extinguished in a dramatic finale

Leigh 21-20 Toulouse: Leopards snatch golden-point Super League win after Gareth O’Brien drop goal

Gareth O’Brien of Leigh celebrates kicking the match-winning drop goal

Gareth O’Brien scored a golden-point drop goal to earn Leigh a dramatic 21-20 victory over Toulouse.

Leopards looked to be heading for just a second Betfred Super League victory of the season when they led 20-0 but the French side fought back impressively to force extra-time with a last-gasp penalty.

O’Brien kept his nerve in front of the posts, though, to clinch a much-needed win for the hosts three minutes into the first added period.

Leigh were irresistible in the opening 20 minutes, with Josh Charnley twice running through to score, while Innes Senior’s acrobatic effort saw him touch down in the other corner.

Liam Horne then broke through the middle for a try under the posts but Toulouse gave themselves hope for the second half when Romeo Tropis burst over in the 37th minute.

A great pass from Olly Ashall-Bott sent Benjamin Laguerre in 10 minutes after the break, and the gap was down to two points when Laguerre drove over again moments after Ryan Brown had been sin-binned for Leigh.

Brendan Hands was then denied a try for offside but Toulouse forced extra-time when Jake Shorrocks, who had kicked all three conversions, calmly slotted over an 80th-minute penalty,

Relieved Leigh boss Adrian Lam told Sky Sports: “We made it difficult for ourselves. I thought a soft try just before half-time gave them some hope and momentum, and the whole second half was all theirs. Grateful we got through in the end. A much-needed win.”

Opposite number Sylvain Houles admitted: “It’s a hard one to take. We gave a 20 points head start. It’s three times now and we cannot be happy with that every time. It’s such a shame because the boys managed to find the energy to get back into the game. I’m disappointed for them.”

Caster Semenya is encouraging a challenge against the landmark decision to reintroduce sex testing alongside banning transgender women and athletes with differences in sex development (DSD) from women’s competitions

For Caster Semenya, the new Olympics rules are not about providing clarity and protecting women’s sport but caving into political pressure, and discriminatory.

Having fought athletics chiefs over her own gender eligibility, the double Olympic champion is shaping up for a new battle with the International Olympic Committee.

“If we have to say women must stop taking part in Olympics, so be it,” the South African said in an exclusive interview with Sky News.

“I will encourage athletes to come together as a class action … because this does not make sense. It does not save women’s sport.”

The South African is encouraging a challenge against the landmark decision to reintroduce sex testing alongside banning transgender women and athletes – like herself – with differences in sex development (DSD) from women’s competitions.

Semenya won 800m gold at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics

Semenya won 800m gold at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics

“I’m fighting for women’s dignity,” Semenya said. “Those who say, ‘I am not going to be tested to prove that I’m a woman’ … I will encourage them to do that to stop this nonsense.”

This goes beyond sport since Donald Trump seized on stopping “men beat and batter female athletes”.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry, a former Olympic champion swimmer, and many other women in sport now align with the US president.

The Zimbabwean determined it is not fair for biological males to compete in the female competitions because physiological advantages of having gone through male puberty, or the presence of XY chromosomes, can be the difference in determining medals.

“This regulation is totally shameful,” Semenya said. “It’s something that her as a president should have not allowed such to happen.”

But the IOC has said there is at least a 10 per cent advantage in most running and swimming events for men – rising beyond 100 per cent for sports requiring “explosive power” like boxing, which creates dangers beyond fairness of competitions.

'I'm fighting for women's dignity,' Semenya told Sky News

‘I’m fighting for women’s dignity,’ Semenya told Sky News

‘There’s no scientific proof – it’s an ideology’

I put this to Semenya.

“Based on what?” she responded. “There’s no scientific proof about what has been said. It’s an ideology.”

The full scientific research behind the decision has not been published. Nor has the IOC said what has changed in recent years scientifically or medically.

But is it not clear in combat sports there are safety concerns when a biological woman takes on a fighter who was born a man, with higher testosterone levels and greater muscle mass?

“What do you expect in boxing?” Semenya responded. “We understand that it’s a dangerous sport. We all sign in, in all sporting codes, knowing that there are safety precautions.

“There are risks, but you cannot come and then try to measure someone’s power based on how they look because you think they’re intersex or you think that they’re transgender.”

Semenya has become the face of scrutiny of eligibility rules since her gender was questioned based on her appearance after winning gold at the World Athletics Championships as a 19-year-old in 2009.

Enforced verification tests showed that while she always identified as female and had female traits, Semenya also had the typical male XY chromosome pattern and high levels of naturally occurring testosterone.

After being cleared to race, Semenya was still able to win Olympic gold in 2012 and 2016.

But then she refused to artificially reduce her hormone levels as required by World Athletics and lost further legal challenges. So the 35-year-old now coaches.

Semenya has come under scrutiny since winning gold at the 2009 World Athletics Championships at the age of 2019

‘There is no respect for women’

Mandatory sex verification testing for all entrants into Olympic women’s events will ensure a competitor isn’t singled out for tests because they might have masculine characteristics.

The IOC’s stance has transformed since ruling out a return to the “bad old days” of sex testing during Paris 2024 when Thomas Bach was in charge.

But Semenya said: “There is no respect for women. The minute you start asking a woman to be tested to take part in sports, that’s not dignity.”

When the IOC said this policy would apply to all their events I asked Ms Coventry if that includes the Youth Olympics. It does, meaning girls as young as 15 will have to take sex tests.

She said: “We really went above and beyond, I think, talking to a lot of different athletes, around how the process should be followed and what does that look like, and the support networks that need to be in place.”

For Semenya this just adds to safeguarding issues: “Testing a girl, a child, it is harmful and it is shameful,” she said.

Will the rules stand up to a legal challenge ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics?

While Semenya says she is fighting for the dignity of women, the IOC insists this is about protecting the safety and integrity of women’s sport but could need to produce more evidence.

LeBron James breaks NBA record for most games played as Kevin Durant passes Michael Jordan on points list

LeBron James played a record 1,612th regular-season game in the NBA against the Orlando Magic on Saturday

LeBron James set a new NBA record by playing his 1,612th regular-season game in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 105-104 comeback win over the Orlando Magic on Saturday night.

Luka Doncic scored 33 points in the Lakers’ ninth-straight win, but was called for his 16th technical foul – an automatic one-game suspension by the league if it’s not rescinded.

LeBron had 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals on his record-breaking night, the 41-year-old passing the mark Robert Parish held for nearly 30 years.

Paolo Banchero, who led seven Magic players in double figures with 16 points, blocked a shot by James out of bounds with 4.7 seconds left. But, after a replay review, it was determined that the ball had not deflected off LeBron’s foot out of bounds – and so Los Angeles maintained possession.

That set up a Marcus Smart pass to Luke Kennard to make the winning three-pointer with 0.6 seconds left to maintain the Lakers’ win streak.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick said after the game of LeBron’s latest NBA record, into his 23rd season in the league: “He’s had an awesome season. He’s had an awesome career.

“There’s just a deep-seated love for the game of the basketball. And to do it as long as he has, you not only need to have the love, but you need to the love for the commitment to prepare your body and to prepare mind and to get your rest.

Amen Thompson’s tip-in for Houston as time expired clinched victory after Durant’s shot for the win bounced off the rim.

The 37-year-old Durant now has 32,294 points for his career, two more than Jordan.

The Rockets had been up by two when Durant made consecutive three-pointers to make it 117-109, moving past Jordan with the second of them as he briefly lifted his arms in triumph after draining the shot.

Ben Adebayo had 32 points and tied a career high with 21 rebounds for the Heat, who edged into a 122-121 lead with 5.4 seconds to go but would ultimately lose a fourth straight.

Adebayo’s big rebounding night came after he had the second-highest scoring game in NBA history when he scored 83 points in a win over the Washington Wizards on March 10.
