Man City midfielder Rodri talks up Real Madrid transfer

Man City midfielder Rodri talks up Real Madrid transfer
Rodri says he is keen on a return to La Liga (Onda Cero)

Manchester City midfielder Rodri admits he would find it difficult to turn down a move to Real Madrid.

The 29-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world during his time at City, helping Pep Guardiola’s side win 11 major trophies including four Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Rodri suffered a cruciate ligament injury in September 2024 and completed just two Premier League games in 2025.

But since the New Year, the Spain international has played on a more consistent basis and delivered an impressive performance in City’s 2-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final last Sunday.

Rodri will have just a year remaining on his contract with City at the end of the season and in an interview with Spanish radio station Onda Cero on Wednesday evening, the midfielder made it clear that he would welcome a move to Madrid.

Asked if he would like to return to La Liga, Rodri replied: ‘I’d like to return, yes, obviously.

‘For me, La Liga is where I started. I still follow it, it’s true not as much as before, but I still follow it.

‘And I have to admit that the Premier League is my weakness. I think it’s a thrilling league but at the same time very demanding, meaning it pushes you to the limit. I’ve been there for seven years now, and I’m noticing the passage of time, but for the moment I’m very happy there.

‘I’m currently recovering from an injury, and what worries me right now is my feeling, my level, how to get back to my previous level. Not the contract issue, that will come, especially with a World Cup coming up, which is crucial for reaching my level.

‘Right now I’m free, well, obviously I have a year left on my contract, obviously there will be a point where we’ll have to sit down and talk, have a conversation.’

Asked if he would turn down a move to Real Madrid because he has already played for Atletico, Rodri replied: ‘No, I mean, there have been many players who have gone down that path, right? And especially not directly, but over time.

‘I mean, for me, you can’t turn down the best clubs in the world.

‘They have a fanbase that really goes all out for them, and for me, the Bernabeu is always incredible, a stadium that’s very imposing.’

Vinicius strikes twice as Real Madrid edge Atletico 3-2 in pulsating derby

Vinicius strikes twice as Real Madrid edge Atletico 3-2 in pulsating derby

Vinicius Jr scored twice as Real Madrid fought back to beat visitors Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a breathless Spanish capital derby on ‌Sunday, keeping Alvaro Arbeloa’s side within four points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Billed as a relatively low-key Madrid derby, with Atletico sitting a distant fourth in the table, the match instead delivered a five-goal spectacle between the rivals.

It had everything — stunning goals from both sides and a straight red card to Real captain Federico Valverde that reduced the hosts to 10 men in the dying minutes.

Atletico’s Ademola Lookman opened ‌the scoring in the 33rd minute, finishing a slick counter-attack involving Matteo Ruggeri and a delightful backheel from Giuliano Simeone.

Vinicius equalised from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after ‌David Hancko clumsily tripped Brahim Diaz, and Valverde capitalised on a Jose Maria Gimenez error three ‌minutes later to make it 2-1 to Real.

Nahuel Molina silenced Real’s Bernabeu stadium with a thunderous 30-metre strike in the 66th minute, but Vinicius restored Real’s lead with a cracking solo effort six minutes later.

Valverde then saw red for an inexplicable challenge on Alex Baena, and Julian Alvarez struck the post as Atletico pressed, but Real held firm.

“In control from the start”

“Real Madrid always come out ‌on top,” Vinicius told Real Madrid TV.

“I’m very pleased with the performance we put in today. We were in control from the start; we conceded a goal, but we kept our cool and did what we had to do so our fans could go home happy with another win.”

Atletico’s disappointing ‌league campaign contrasts starkly with their Copa del Rey form, where they will face Real Sociedad in next month’s final after knocking Barcelona out in the semis. They also face Barca in the Champions League quarter-finals in a fortnight, after the international break.

They gave Real a proper fight, pressing until the final whistle of a hugely entertaining contest.

Real almost took the lead inside three minutes when Vinicius made a fabulous solo run from the left and was denied by a great ‌save from Juan Musso, while Valverde hit the post after another fantastic run a few minutes later.

Giuliano Simeone made a selfless goal-line clearance to deny Vinicius from point-blank range inside the six-yard box in the 20th minute, blocking the Brazilian’s effort twice.

Real pay for wastefulness

Real paid dearly for their wastefulness when Atletico opened the scoring through Lookman’s counter in the 33rd minute.

Yet they found the equaliser seven minutes after the restart when Hancko lost his balance trying to dispossess Brahim inside the area, clumsily tripping the Moroccan to gift ‌the hosts a penalty. Vinicius blasted it home to his left as Musso dived the wrong way.

Three minutes later Valverde gave Real the lead after a schoolboy error from centre back Gimenez, introduced at halftime to shore up the defence. The Uruguayan failed to deal with a routine pass, allowing Valverde to pounce on the loose ball, wrestle past the flailing defender and fire past Musso.

Just as Real appeared in full control, Atletico conjured an equaliser from nothing in the 66th minute. Right back Molina tried his luck from 30 metres and sent a thunderous strike arrowing into the ‌top-left corner.

Vinicius took matters into his own hands six minutes later, cutting in diagonally from the left, dribbling past two opponents and unleashing an unstoppable shot just inside the far post.

Then came a bewildering twist when Valverde was flashed a straight red, but Real held firm to claim all three points.

Federico Valverde’s heavily deflected 95th-minute drive snatched injury-hit Real Madrid a 2-1 win at Celta Vigo in La Liga on Friday. The Uruguayan midfielder needed a stroke of fortune at the death to pull his team to within one point of leaders Barcelona, who visit Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.Aurelien Tchouameni opened the scoring for Los Blancos early on but Borja Iglesias soon pulled Celta level at their Balaidos stadium.Alvaro Arbeloa’s Madrid, without injured striker Kylian Mbappe, had lost their previous two league games and are struggling to find consistent form.Valverde’s shot, which flew into Celta’s net after bouncing off former Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso, stopped his side going three consecutive La Liga matches without a win.“There’s a long way to go in La Liga, a lot of points left to play for… at this point it’s almost like La Liga has not started yet,” Arbeloa told reporters.“Every game you’re playing against a team that has their own objectives and each game will be a war.“We came here with 10 players out so I think our win deserves a lot of credit.”As well as French superstar Mbappe, the team’s top goalscorer, Arbeloa was without several other players including Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo Goes and Eduardo Camavinga.Despite the victory, Madrid’s form and their injury list does not inspire confidence ahead of next week’s Champions League last 16 clash against Manchester City.Arbeloa started 18-year-old midfielder Thiago Pitarch for the first time and he offered a decent display even as his team failed to impress.Iglesias forced Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into a solid low save with a drive from the edge of the box in the opening exchanges.Arbeloa’s side started well and Vinicius Junior struck the post before Tchouameni put them ahead in the 11th minute. The French midfielder produced a fine finish from the edge of the box as Madrid worked a corner to him, his strike hitting the upright on its way in.Celta were not discouraged though and some poor defending from Trent Alexander-Arnold let them back in.The England international allowed Williot Swedberg to get in behind him and then lacked the agility to block off the Swede, who cut the ball across for Iglesias to finish.Hard-fought winCourtois made a good save to keep Swedberg at bay before the break, as sixth-place Celta largely gave as good as they got.Madrid appealed for a penalty when Ferran Jutgla handled the ball in the box, but a VAR review showed there was a push on a Celta defender just before and no spot kick was awarded.Celta substitute Iago Aspas hit the post late on and it seemed like his team were destined for a point as the clock ticked down. However in the final minute of stoppage time Valverde’s effort from the edge of the box hit Alonso and left Celta goalkeeper Ionut Radu wrong-footed.“We hardly gave up any chances, and the shot at the end was well defended, so we’re a bit annoyed (to lose),” Iglesias told Movistar.Arbeloa said he hoped Madrid’s determination to claim the three points could be a platform to build from going forward.“I know we can do a lot of things better, but with the personality and character we showed today, I hope that this is a turning point and from here everything goes a lot better,” added Arbeloa.

‘He truly deserves it’: Vinicius Jr gets his revenge as Real Madrid knock Benfica out of Champions League

Real Madrid defeated Benfica 3-1 on aggregate to reach the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 as Vinicius Junior scored a decisive goal after first-leg controversy. Head coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised Vini’s impact after the match. Aurelien Tchouameni also starred with an equaliser after Benfica took an early lead.

Real Madrid defeated Benfica 2-1 on Wednesday night and 3-1 on aggregate to book their place in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. But the score does not tell the full story of how dramatic the match was.

Benfica started strongly and shocked the home crowd in the 14th minute. Rafa Silva scored the opener. However, the response from Madrid was immediate. Just two minutes later, Aurelien Tchouameni scored with a precise shot from the edge. The goal restored Madrid’s aggregate lead and brought life back to Bernabeu.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

The game continued at a high tempo. Arda Guler scored in the 32nd minute, but the goal was disallowed for a very close offside. Benfica kept fighting and even hit the crossbar later in the second half. Madrid also suffered a big blow when Raul Asencio had to be taken off on a stretcher after a painful aerial clash with teammate Eduardo Camavinga.

Then came the moment that many were waiting for. Vinicus Junior’s revenge moment after all the controversy and tension from the first leg. In the 80th minute, Federico Valverde provided a perfect assist to Vini Jr on the counterattack. The Brazilian winger curled a beautiful shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. It was his second goal of the tie, after scoring the winner in the first leg as well.

This goal felt special because Vinicius had alleged that he was racially abused by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni in the first leg, an accusation that Prestianni denied. UEFA later suspended Prestianni for this match after his appeal was dismissed. With everything that happened, Vinicius’ goal felt like a revenge on the pitch.

After the match, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised the Brazilian star. He said Vinicius deserved the goal and highlighted how important he has become for the team, especially in the absence of Kylian Mbappe.

“I’m happy for the great goal he scored, because he deserves it and for the form he’s in. Without Mbappé, he is even more important, and I’m very happy for him because I think he truly deserves it,” Arbeloa said after the match.

Meanwhile, Tchouameni, who was named Man of the Match, also spoke after the match. He said the team did not start well but always believed they would score. He added that the squad must defend better and start games stronger in the future.

“The truth is, we didn’t start the match very well, but we had the confidence that we would score goals. Then we did things a little better. Those who came on later and the young players from Castilla contributed very well to the match. Now we will keep moving forward. We need to adjust a bit how we defend and start matches better. In the end, we won, which is the most important thing,” Tchouameni said.

Real Madrid will now wait to see if they will face Sporting CP or Manchester City in the Champions League Round of 16, the draw for which will take place on Friday.

Barcelona took advantage of Real Madrid’s stumble and regained the Spanish league lead with a comfortable 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Levante.

Marc Bernal, Frenkie de Jong and Fermín López scored a goal each as Barcelona ended a two-game losing streak to get back in front of rival Madrid, which lost 2-1 at Osasuna on Saturday.

Barcelona moved one point ahead of Madrid, which had won eight in a row in the league before losing to Osasuna.

“We know it isn’t easy to start winning again after two defeats, but the team gave a very good response” Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said.

Barcelona was coming off a 2-1 loss to Girona in the league and a 4-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals.

“It was important to win and earn three points again,” Barcelona defender João Cancelo said. “Soccer gives you these opportunities to rebound and that’s what we did today, playing well again after two bad games.” Barcelona had earned a clean sheet only once in its previous six games in all competitions.

Good start for Barcelona Bernal scored from close range four minutes into the match at the Camp Nou Stadium. The 18-year-old Bernal had scored his first goal with the first team two rounds ago in a win over Mallorca.

“They had an early chance but my goal helped us settle and gain some confidence,” Bernal said.

De Jong added to the lead from inside the area in the 32nd and López sealed the victory with a beautiful long-range shot in the 81st, with the ball ricocheting off the post before going into the net.

Levante’s Australian goalkeeper Mathew Ryan kept Barcelona from adding the fourth with a pair of outstanding saves in a row in the final minutes, first off a header by Raphinha and then off a point-blank strike from López on the rebound.

It was the fourth straight defeat for Levante, which is in 19th place. It is one point ahead of last-place Oviedo, which has a game in hand.

Levante has only one victory in its last eight matches.

Pedri entered the match in the 66th to make his return to action nearly a month after an injury layoff.

Yamal’s 100th win Lamine Yamal celebrated his 100th win with Barcelona, becoming the youngest player to reach that mark in official matches for the club.

The 18-year-old Yamal’s 139 games include 16 draws and 23 defeats.

Flick downplayed Yamal’s apparent disappointment at being replaced in the final minutes.

Other results Third-place Villarreal, Barcelona’s next league opponent, restored a three-point gap to fourth-place Atletico Madrid by coming from behind to beat Valencia 2-1 at home. Atletico beat seventh-place Espanyol 4-2 at home on Saturday.

Sixth-place Celta Vigo defeated relegation-threatened Mallorca 2-0 at home with veteran forward Iago Aspas scoring in the 85th and 90th minutes. Celta had been winless in four straight league matches. Mallorca has lost six of its last eight games.

Sevilla won 1-0 at 10-man Getafe for its second win in its last 10 matches in all competitions.

Djibril Sow scored a 64th-minute winner for the visitors. Getafe played a man down from the 26th after a straight red card for Djene Dakonam.

The result left Sevilla in 11th place, immediately above Getafe. (AP) APA APA

Benfica fan makes ‘monkey gestures’ against Real Madrid players as Prestianni defends Vinicius’ accusation: ‘…threats received from players’

Gianluca Prestianni has defended himself after being accused of racism by Vinicius Junior, while a Benfica fan has been caught racially abusing Real Madrid players during the Champions League clash.

Vinicius Junior was allegedly racially abused not only by Gianluca Prestianni but also by sections of the crowd during Real Madrid’s Champions League match against Benfica at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon on Tuesday. The involvement of at least one fan in racially abusing Brazilian football star Vinicius came to light after a video of the incident went viral.

In the purported video, a young Benfica fan could be seen making ‘monkey gestures’ towards Real Madrid players during the match.

Benfica fan racially abuses Real Madrid players

While Vinicius cannot be seen in the video, the fan is sitting just behind the Benfica goal, and it appears that he is directing the racist gesture towards The Best FIFA Men’s Player of 2024 or his Real teammates.

Meanwhile, Prestianni, who has been accused of racially abusing Vinicius during Real’s 1-0 win in the playoff match first leg, has defended himself in an Instagram post. The Argentine footballer claimed that he did not use any racist language towards Vinicius.

“I want to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults to Vini Jr, who regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard,” Prestianni said on his Instagram account. “I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players.”

Mourinho criticised for justifying racism

Prestianni’s coach and legendary manager, Jose Mourinho, is also facing accusations of
justifying the racism against Vinicius as he questioned the Real Madrid player’s celebration after scoring the only goal of the match.

“I told [Vinicius], when you score a goal like that you just celebrate and walk back. When he was arguing about racism, I told him the biggest person in the history of this club [Eusebio] was black,” Mourinho said after the match.

“This club, the last thing that it is, is racist. If in his mind there was something in relation to that, this is Benfica.”

It has to be noted that Vinicius has been at the receiving end of racist abuse multiple times in La Liga. His bold and unapologetic conduct is often used as an excuse for the heinous crime, but in reality, it in no way reduces the ugly nature of racist abuse.

‘It’s DISGUSTING’: Trent Alexander-Arnold fumes after Real Madrid team-mate Vinicius Jr accuses opponent of racism in clash with Benfica, as match is stopped for 10 minutes after referee activated new protocol

Real Madrid’s Champions League match away to Benfica descended into chaos after Vinicius Jr was allegedly racially abused and hit by a water bottle – as his team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold branded the scenes a ‘disgrace to football’.

In a tinderbox evening at the Estadio de Luz, where play was halted for 10 minutes after referee Francois Letexier made a crossed arms gesture to signal reported racial abuse, Jose Mourinho and a member of his Benfica staff were also shown a red card.

Vinicius, who has since branded racists as ‘cowards’, had just scored the opening – and ultimately winning – goal of the game before being booked by referee Francois Letexier for his dancing celebration which seemingly antagonised the home crowd.

When walking back to the centre circle with his team-mates, the 25-year-old was incensed by something said allegedly to him by Argentinian Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni, who held his shirt over his mouth while speaking to the Madrid star after his goal.

While Alexander-Arnold said the scenes were ‘disgusting’ post-match, Mourinho claimed Vinicius had incited his players by celebrating and that the Brazilian ‘was not just happy to score that astonishing goal’.

‘I believe (Vinicius incited the players and the crowd),’ Mourinho said in a post-match interview with Amazon Prime Video.

‘The words that Prestianni exchanged with Vinicius, I want to stay independent. I don’t want to say I believe in Prestianni, I don’t believe in Vinicius, because they told me two completely different things. I want to be independent and I don’t comment about it’

‘I told (Vinicius) exactly that. I said ‘when you score a goal like that, you just celebrate and walk back’ and when he was arguing about racism, I told him that the biggest person in the history of this club (Eusebio) was black.

‘The last thing this club is, is racist. So if, in his mind, it was something in relation to that, this is Benfica.’

Asked if Prestianni denied racially abusing the Madrid star, he said: ‘Yeah. But I don’t believe in one or another, I want to be independent.’

Confronted with the fact that Vinicius had been the victim of racial abuse in the past, Mourinho then said: ‘There is something wrong because this happens in every stadium. In a stadium where Vinicius plays, something happens – always.’

Former Madrid manager and Benfica boss Mourinho was seen speaking to Vinicius on the pitch, before the winger sat in the away dugout while the match was paused as members of both teams’ coaching staff and players spilled out onto the pitch.

The Madrid star then released his own statement, where he branded racists as being ‘above all, cowards’.

‘They need to put their shirts in their mouths to show how weak they are,’ Vinicius’s statement began.

‘But they have the protection of others who, theoretically, have an obligation to punish them’.

‘Nothing that happened today is new in my life or in my team’s life. I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don’t understand why’.

‘On the other hand, it was just a poorly executed protocol that served no purpose’.

‘I don’t like to appear in situations like this, especially after a big win and when the headlines should be about Real Madrid, but it’s necessary’.

Kylian Mbappe was among those visibly enraged by what had happened, with the French forward having to be held back by his team-mates.

His fellow Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold branded the scenes ‘disgusting’ after the match.

‘I can’t comment too much on it because there’s probably an ongoing investigation… but I think what’s happened tonight is a disgrace to football,’ the England international said.

‘It’s overshadowed the performance, especially after such an amazing goal. Vini has been subjected to this a few times throughout his career and for it to happen tonight and ruin the night for us is a disgrace, a disgrace to football.

‘There’s no place for it in society. It’s disgusting.’

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney added: ‘I just think it’s so sad in this day and age that we still have to deal with this.

‘Football is a game that brings so much joy, love and passion around the world and still we get highlights like this where we’re getting players allegedly, I think you’d have to say, because you don’t know whether he’s said it or not.

‘But we’re still getting this now in football and in the world and society, and it’s so sad that all the joyous moments are overshadowed by this, in this day and age.’

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg said after the incident on Amazon Prime Video that Vinicius was ‘not happy with what has been said’.

He added: ‘The referee is following the protocol for a racial comment that has been said.

‘Once Vinicius has approached the referee the referee now has to follow the protocol and the rules that Uefa have set out when this happens.

‘As a referee, I have had this situation before when players have reported a racial comment on the field of play. All he can do is make the report. Afterwards, then Uefa will look into this. As a referee it is very difficult in this situation.’

Alan Shearer, on commentary, added: ‘We don’t know what’s been said to him. We can see Jose Mourinho down there and he’s gone speaking to Real Madrid staff and Vini Jr himself to calm him down.

‘It’s such a shame, isn’t it? We should be talking about an excellent piece of skill and how he produced a piece of magic which this game needed.

‘Calm heads are needed because you can hear the crowd going after the players – as tough as that may be.’

Shortly after play resumed – to the sound of whistles and jeers from the crowd – Mourinho was sent off for seemingly calling for Vinicius to be shown a second yellow for a foul on Richard Rios.

One of the Benfica coaches were also shown red during the period play was halted, though it is unclear what for.

And deep into the 12 minutes of stoppage time, the chaos continued in Lisbon as play was briefly halted again by the referee after missiles were repeatedly thrown onto the pitch.

Standing over a corner shortly before the final whistle, a bottle was then thrown from the crowd before it crashed of Vinicius’s arm.

It is unclear what was said to the Madrid star in Portugal but he has been the victim of racial insults in the past.

On one occasion, three Valencia fans were given prison sentences for abusing him after an incident during a LaLiga match in May 2023 which left him in tears.

The supporters were each jailed for eight months and banned from attending football matches for two years in what were the first criminal convictions for racially abusing a footballer in Spain.

Responding to the convictions at the time, the Brazilian said: ‘Many asked me to ignore it, many others said that my fight was in vain and that I should just ‘play football’. But, as I’ve always said, I’m not a victim of racism. I am a tormentor of racists.

‘This first criminal conviction in the history of Spain is not for me. It’s for all black people. May other racists be afraid, ashamed and hide in the shadows. Otherwise, I’ll be here to collect.

‘Thank you to La Liga and Real Madrid for helping with this historic conviction. More to come…’

‘He has one dream’ – £60m Liverpool star tipped to pursue shock Real Madrid move

Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai harbours dreams of moving to Spain to play for Real Madrid, according to his national team head coach Marco Rossi.

Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for £60million in 2023, and has gone on to become a vital player under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot.

The Hungarian midfielder was instrumental in the Reds’ Premier League triumph last season, and has been one of the few Liverpool players to impress in what has been a tough campaign for the defending champions.

Szoboszlai is under contract at Anfield until 2028, but his long-term future at Liverpool has come under doubt after Hungarian head coach Rossi said the 25-year-old has a lifelong dream to play for Los Blancos.

‘Dominic is currently one of the best players in the ranks of Liverpool and the Premier League, thanks to his outstanding form, where he has developed a lot and clearly,’ Rossi told Qatari outlet Winwin.

‘He is currently one of the best players in Europe and the world, and it is natural that there are clubs that will be interested in signing him.

‘From what I have heard and what I know, and because of the very good and direct relationship I have had with Dominic since he started playing football as a child, Real Madrid was his dream.

‘Dominic, ever since he started playing football, has had one dream, which is to play for Real Madrid.’

Rossi, though, also said he would not be surprised to see Szoboszlai extend his stay at Liverpool, such is his importance and form in Slot’s side at present

‘He’s currently playing for Liverpool and they’re a big team in the Premier League,’ he added. ‘I don’t know if he can take that step, because it depends on his personal decision, as well as his club’s decision.

‘The idea that is always in your mind is to achieve your dream and make that dream a reality, and in my opinion, that is the only thing, and the most important thing, that can dominate Szoboszlai’s thinking.

‘But on the other hand, I don’t rule out the possibility that he will stay at Liverpool and renew his contract there, especially since he is highly regarded within the club.

‘He is a very important player for Liverpool, and Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world.’

Szoboszlai, meanwhile, does not appear to be publicly angling for a move away from Anfield, and instead recently expressed his desire to commit his long-term future to Liverpool.

‘I would love to,’ he told reporters earlier this month when asked about the possibility of signing a new deal at Liverpool.

‘I like the city, I like the club, I like playing with these guys, I love Anfield, I love the fans, let’s see what the future holds. Let’s see what happens, hopefully everyone will be happy at the end.’

The midfield also suggested that talks had begun over a new deal, but nothing had been agreed.

‘It’s not in my hands,’ he added. ‘There is no progression but if the right offer comes then let’s see.’

Real Madrid star tipped to beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s record: ‘If anyone can surpass him, it is…’

Real Madrid defeated Valencia 2-0 in the LaLiga on Sunday to close the gap between them and Barcelona to one point at the top of the LaLiga standings.

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa is backing Kylian Mbappe to break Cristiano Ronaldo’s records at the club after the French star found the net once again in Los Blancos’ 2-0 win over Valencia in the LaLiga on Sunday, February 9.

Real Madrid defeated Valencia comfortably after a scratchy first half on Sunday. Alvaro Carreras broke the deadlock in the 65th minute before Mbappe doubled the lead in the injury time. Despite the win, Arbeloa’s men still remain a point adrift of the leaders Barcelona who thrashed Mallorca on Saturday.

Arbeloa praises Mbappe after win

“Words fail to describe Kylian,” Arbeloa said after the match. “We thought we wouldn’t see anything like Cristiano, but he’s on his way. We’re very lucky to have him. He’s the best player in the world right now.”

“Like I said, Cristiano’s performance seemed otherworldly, and Kylian still has a long way to go, but he has the talent to follow in his footsteps. Why not surpass him? If anyone can, it’s Kylian,” the Real Madrid head coach said.

Mbappe has now fired seven goals in his last six matches in LaLiga where he is currently leading the goalscoring charts. In fact, he has 23 goals, eight more than the second-placed Vedat Muriqi of Mallorca. He has a total of 38 goals this season. Ronaldo’s record in one campaign at Madrid was 61 goals in the 2014-15 season.

He also praised Carreras who opened the scoring for the Madrid side against Valencia to set up his side’s seventh straight victory in the league.

“Alvaro’s goal shows that he has a lot of talent going forward. He also scored a great goal against Valencia in the first leg. There are no adjectives left to describe Kylian. We thought we weren’t going to see anything like Cristiano, but this one is on his way,” Arbeloa said after the match.
