RR vs MI, IPL 2026: Rajasthan Royals climb to No.1 with dominant win over Mumbai Indians | Cricket News – The Times of India

Rajasthan Royals continued their dominant run in the Indian Premier League 2026, defeating Mumbai Indians by 27 runs in a rain-curtailed 11-over-a-side clash at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.Leading the charge was Yashasvi Jaiswal, who smashed a scintillating unbeaten 77 off 32 balls, laced with 10 fours and four sixes. He shared a blistering 80-run opening stand with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who hammered 39 off just 14 deliveries. The pair laid the foundation for Rajasthan’s imposing total of 150/3, which ultimately proved too much for Mumbai. The match, delayed by over two-and-a-half hours due to rain, turned one-sided soon after the Royals’ innings. Mumbai Indians crumbled early in the chase and were reduced to 46/5 inside five overs, losing key batters Ryan Rickelton, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya for single-digit scores. Despite some late resistance, they finished at 123/9, slipping to their second consecutive defeat.Chasing 151, Mumbai’s troubles began in the very first over when Rickelton, after hitting a six, miscued a rising delivery from Jofra Archer and was caught by Dhruv Jurel. Suryakumar Yadav showed brief intent with a six but fell soon after to Nandre Burger, leaving Mumbai at 20/2.Sandeep Sharma then struck a crucial blow, trapping Rohit Sharma lbw – the sixth time he has dismissed the Mumbai skipper in the IPL – as the five-time champions slid further. Ravi Bishnoi tightened the screws by removing both Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma in quick succession, effectively ending Mumbai’s hopes.Earlier, Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start with Jaiswal hammering 22 runs in the first over off Deepak Chahar. Sooryavanshi then took on Jasprit Bumrah, smashing him for two sixes in a fearless display. Jaiswal continued the onslaught, hitting Trent Boult for back-to-back sixes as Rajasthan raced to 50 in just 16 balls.Sooryavanshi’s explosive knock ended when Shardul Thakur had him caught near the boundary, while AM Ghazanfar removed Jurel and skipper Riyan Parag. However, Jaiswal remained unbeaten till the end, ensuring Rajasthan Royals posted a match-winning total and climbed to the top of the table with three consecutive wins.

The teenage batter hit two sixes in four deliveries, including one off the first ball he faced, putting Mumbai Indians under pressure early. The match had been reduced due to rain, which delayed the start by over two-and-a-half hours. Sooryavanshi and his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal built the innings, with the early attack setting the tone. Despite some control in the middle overs from bowlers like Bumrah, Hardik and Allah Ghazanfar, Rajasthan Royals kept the momentum, helped by a set batter at the crease. The team finished with 150 runs in 11 overs.Sooryavanshi scored 39 before being dismissed. Shardul Thakur had him caught by Tilak Varma, ending an innings that had already made an impact. The contest between Sooryavanshi and Bumrah had been seen as a key moment before the match, and the way it unfolded drew strong reactions online.“Mi wale keh rahe hai baarish hi sahi thi,” commented a user.

NEW DELHI: ‘See the ball and tonk the ball’ – that’s the approach young batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi follows against any opponent and any bowler in the world. As Rajasthan Royals gear up to face Mumbai Indians in a mouth-watering clash in Guwahati, the spotlight has once again shifted to the 15-year-old sensation, with much of the discussion centred around how he will tackle world-class pacer Jasprit Bumrah.Ahead of the clash, the Rajasthan Royals team management chalked out a plan on a board, leading to a light-hearted moment.Sooryavanshi, who was looking at the board with Vikram Rathour, Rajasthan Royals’ batting coach, by his side, started with: “Koi to akele batting karega hi na, toh mai kar leta hun akele batting.”After Rathour nodded, Sooryavanshi added: “Aree 5 minute kam kar lunga sir,”.He then began teasing Siddhartha Lahiri, Rajasthan Royals’ performance coach, who was writing the batting plan on the board.“Your game plan is correct,” Sooryavanshi said.Lahiri jokingly replied: “Isko nikalo pehle mere paas se”.Rajasthan Royals will be aiming to register a third consecutive win when they take on five-time champions Mumbai Indians on Tuesday.Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back after their loss to Delhi Capitals.Sooryavanshi has carried his form from last season into the current one.In two innings so far this season, he has scored 83 runs at an average of 41.50 and a strike rate of 237.14, with a 17-ball 52 against Chennai Super Kings as his best score. Former Chennai Super Kings batter Ambati Rayudu has backed Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag, stating that the young captain has already earned the trust and respect of his teammates early in his leadership stint. Rajasthan edged past Gujarat Titans by six runs in a tense encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 4. After posting 210/6, RR managed to restrict Gujarat to 204/8, sealing a narrow but impressive win. Speaking during a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, Rayudu highlighted how Parag has settled into the role and how the squad appears to be responding positively to his leadership. “He is doing a fantastic job and I am sure the coaching staff are giving him all the freedom. I can easily see the RR group having great respect for him. That is great to watch. When you have a young captain, the biggest challenge is to command that respect. I can see a lot of respect for him in the squad. They look to be enjoying themselves, which is a great sign.” Parag was handed the captaincy ahead of IPL 2026 after Sanju Samson moved to CSK. The 24-year-old had already gained some leadership exposure last season, stepping in as stand-in captain during Samson’s injury phase. Former Australia captain Aaron Finch also weighed in, pointing out a key factor that has helped Parag ease into the role. He noted that the absence of a dominant senior figure in the dressing room has worked in the young skipper’s favour. “What is also important in that regard when you have got a young captain – there is not an overshadowing figure who has missed that opportunity to lead the side. Often there can be a resentment there towards the person who has got the job. He has got a team of young superstars. He can almost guide them through the next phase of their career and forge a generation of seriously good players for RR.” Under Parag’s leadership this season, Rajasthan have made a strong start, winning both of their matches so far. While his individual returns with the bat have been modest — 14* off 11 against CSK and 8 against GT — he has contributed with the ball as well, picking up the wicket of Kumar Kushagra in the latter game. With early results going his way and strong backing from former players, Parag’s captaincy stint has begun on a promising note, both in terms of results and dressing-room dynamics.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra heaped praise on Ravi Bishnoi for his decisive spell in Rajasthan Royals’ narrow six-run win over Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026. He also remarked that the leg-spinner was undervalued at the auction and deserved a significantly higher price.Chasing 211 in Ahmedabad on April 4, Gujarat were undone largely by Bishnoi’s impact with the ball. The wrist-spinner returned figures of 4/41 from his four overs, striking at key moments to tilt the game in Rajasthan’s favour.Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra reflected on Bishnoi’s value and performance.“Ravi Bishnoi, we were talking at the time of the auction that he was sold very cheaply – seven crores is cheap. He should have got 10-11 crores. He was a brilliant acquisition at seven crores. He picked up four wickets and made the difference in the end because all the important wickets were in his name.”Chopra also reserved special praise for Tushar Deshpande, who delivered under pressure in the final over to seal the game.“Tushar Deshpande came into the team and Brijesh Sharma wasn’t there, and what a change in the end because Tushar Deshpande was standing between a win and a loss. Tushar Deshpande executed those yorkers beautifully. Thumbs up with both hands for executing under pressure,” he observed.Deshpande finished with figures of 1/24 in three overs and held his nerve in the final over, conceding just four runs while dismissing Rashid Khan when Gujarat needed 11 off six balls.Earlier in the innings, Dhruv Jurel played a standout knock, scoring 75 off 42 deliveries to anchor Rajasthan’s innings. Chopra praised his maturity, especially after being promoted up the order this season.“Before that, Dhruv Jurel. They have taken a big call this season to make him bat at No. 3, and he was absolutely stellar. He batted almost till the end. He scored his first Test century at this ground only. Very good guy. I love him to bits. I feel very happy when he does well. Then their two openers. In my opinion, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the most explosive openers of this league,” he said.Alongside Jurel, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (31 off 18) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (55 off 36) provided Rajasthan with a strong start at the top.On the other hand, Chopra pointed out shortcomings in Gujarat’s chase, suggesting that better planning could have changed the result.“GT, this match was yours. There are problems in batting. Shubman Gill’s injury, of course, didn’t help, but wickets fell at regular intervals. I thought it was a slightly haphazard chase. You could have won this game had you constructed it slightly better,” Chopra observed.

Hardik Pandya missed the match against Delhi Capitals due to viral.

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya missed the clash against the Delhi Daredevils due to viral, but he is set to return for the five-time champions’ away clash against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Tuesday. Pandya travelled with the rest of the team right after the afternoon game in Delhi, and will resume training after staying away from action for the last few days. Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed at the toss that Pandya is unwell and “doesn’t look good”. “He’s not well, doesn’t look good, so he was not fit for today’s game. So, just getting into his shoes today,” said Surya at the toss.

TimesofIndia.com has learnt that the situation wasn’t as alarming as it sounded after the toss and the decision to rest the all-rounder was taken merely as a precaution because the tournament is still in its early days. The team was scheduled to fly out of Delhi right after the game and the MI management didn’t want to take any chances with their premier all-rounder. Pandya traveled to Delhi but missed the team’s two training sessions before the game due to illness.Plenty of changes were made to the XI for the game against Delhi Capitals, but the result didn’t go MI’s way as the Surya-led unit was outplayed by six wickets. After a disciplined effort with the ball, Delhi, riding high on a Sameer Rizvi masterclass, chased the total in just 18.1 overs to hand MI their first defeat of the season. MI’s next match is against the unbeaten Rajasthan Royals, who will be coming into the fixture after winning convincingly wins in their first two games against Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans. The Riyan Parag-led team are currently topping the table, courtesy a healthy net run-rate.

Ashok Sharma’s 154.2 kmph rocket not the fastest: Here are IPL’s quickest-ever deliveries | Cricket News – The Times of India
Ashok Sharma bowls fastest bowl of IPL 2026 vs Rajasthan Royals

Gujarat Titans unearthed a moment of raw pace brilliance in IPL 2026 as Ashok Sharma sent down the quickest delivery of the season so far during their clash against the Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The young pacer consistently hurried the Royals batters, but it was the final ball of the 16th over that truly stood out. Charging in with intent, Sharma unleashed a searing yorker at 154.2 kmph to Dhruv Jurel, marking the fastest delivery recorded in the ongoing season. The effort not only highlighted his potential but also placed him among the quickest bowlers to feature in the league this year. The Indian Premier League has long been a stage for extreme pace, with several fast bowlers pushing the limits of speed. Despite Sharma’s effort, the all-time record still belongs to Shaun Tait, whose thunderous 157.71 kmph delivery in 2011 remains unmatched. Representing the Rajasthan Royals, Tait produced that fiery spell against the then Delhi Daredevils in Jaipur. Bowling with hostility, he had already dismissed Virender Sehwag before testing Aaron Finch with sheer pace. The record delivery beat Finch all ends up, narrowly flying over the stumps. Over the years, a few have come close. Lockie Ferguson clocked 157.3 kmph during the IPL 2022 final while playing for Gujarat Titans, falling just short of Tait’s mark. Meanwhile, Umran Malik set the benchmark for Indian pacers with a 157 kmph rocket for Sunrisers Hyderabad the same season, later earning an India call-up after a 22-wicket campaign. He also went on to record a 155 kmph delivery in international cricket against Sri Lanka in 2023. More recently, Mayank Yadav made headlines in IPL 2024 by hitting 156.7 kmph for Lucknow Super Giants against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, registering one of the fastest deliveries by an Indian in the tournament.

Fastest deliveries in IPL history

Bowler Team Speed (kmph) Opponent Season
Shaun Tait Rajasthan Royals 157.71 Delhi Daredevils 2011
Lockie Ferguson Gujarat Titans 157.30 Rajasthan Royals 2022
Umran Malik Sunrisers Hyderabad 157.00 Delhi Capitals 2022
Mayank Yadav Lucknow Super Giants 156.70 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 2024
Anrich Nortje Delhi Capitals 156.22 Rajasthan Royals 2020

Even as new names continue to emerge, Tait’s iconic Jaipur thunderbolt remains the benchmark for extreme pace in the IPL, with every new generation of fast bowlers chasing that elusive record.

In the shortest format of this sport, impact beats quantity any day of the week. Hence, in an IPL game where nearly 420 runs were amassed in approximately 39 overs, a player who faced just 11 balls walked away with the Man-of-the-Match award.

In the victory over Chennai Super Kings in Chennai on Friday (April 3, 2026), Punjab Kings opener Priyansh Arya was the fifth-highest scorer overall, but it was his quickfire 39 – a flashy knock studded with four sixes and three fours – which had the strongest influence on the outcome of the duel.

For Priyansh, turning out in his second IPL season, providing brisk starts comes naturally. “It has been like this since childhood. I play positively whenever I feel that it will benefit my team. There is risk involved, but if I have the belief that I can hit the first ball, I will do it,” the 24-year-old said after bouncing back from a low score in the previous game.

“There are experienced bowlers at this level, but I believe in my abilities as much as I believe in myself. I do proper practice for executing it.”

Priyansh’s PBKS teammate Shashank Singh hailed him for his mental toughness. “Priyansh knows the areas he can score runs in, and he is mentally very tough although he does not speak much. He is young, but he has matured a lot with his batting. Technique has never been an issue for him. He will do well for sure,” said Shashank.

Fasten your seatbelts whenever Priyansh takes strike, you are in for a ride.

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has thrown his support behind opening batter Sanju Samson, even as the latter’s start to life with the franchise has come under early scrutiny in IPL 2026.Samson’s high-profile move from Rajasthan Royals ahead of the season carried significant expectations, particularly with CSK looking to bounce back after finishing at the bottom of the table last year. The wicketkeeper-batter also arrived on the back of a stellar run, having been named Player of the Tournament in India’s victorious 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. However, his returns so far have been underwhelming. Samson has managed scores of just 6 and 7 in his first two appearances for CSK, including a low return against his former team Rajasthan Royals and another modest outing at Chepauk against Punjab Kings.Despite the slow start, Fleming dismissed concerns over Samson’s form and urged patience. “He is not going to score every time. It’s T20 cricket, and he just nicked one today. But he is in good form. He is training well. And when he gets going, he is often a match-winner. So, two innings don’t define an area of concern,” Fleming told reporters after the match.Samson’s struggles at Chennai’s home venue have also come into focus. In six IPL innings at Chepauk, he has scored only 66 runs at an average of 11 and a strike rate of 100 — his lowest across venues where he has played at least five matches. With six more games scheduled at the ground this season, CSK will be hoping he can reverse that trend.

Poll

Do you believe CSK will improve compared to last season?

The team itself is enduring a difficult phase. After a disappointing campaign last year, CSK have begun IPL 2026 with back-to-back defeats and now face a stern challenge against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their next fixture.

Young batter Ayush Mhatre has opened up about a memorable meeting with his idol Rohit Sharma, describing it as a “dream day” that left a lasting impression on him.Mhatre’s admiration for Rohit has been well known. Earlier, he had even written an emotional note after losing his spot to the former India captain in a Ranji Trophy match. Ahead of his tour of England last year, the youngster finally got the chance to meet his idol — a meeting that turned into a cherished experience.

Rohit Sharma unleashed: MI coach explains tactical calls after explosive knock

Speaking on Chennai Super Kings’ YouTube channel, Mhatre revealed how a simple message led to a personal interaction with Rohit. The opportunity came after Rohit had earlier told him he could reach out whenever he needed guidance following his first IPL appearance against Mumbai Indians. Before departing for England, Mhatre decided to take that offer and sent Rohit a message requesting a meeting.“So I was about to go on the England tour, and I wanted to speak to him a bit. I messaged him. Then I said I wanted to meet him, so he directly called me himself. He called me from his side and said, tell me what you want to say. I told him that I am going on this tour and wanted to meet. He asked me, where do you stay? I said Virar. He said, will you come from Virar to meet me? I said yes, I can come anywhere to meet you, I just want to meet you,” said Mhatre.Despite Rohit suggesting they could simply speak over a video call, Mhatre was determined to meet him in person. The next day, he travelled to Rohit’s residence, where the two spent nearly two hours in conversation.“He said it’s not like that, we can also talk on video. I said no, I want to meet you personally and talk. Then he gave me his home address and I went to his house the next day. I spoke to him for at least 2 hours. I mean, it was crazy that he gave me so much time, that’s a big thing for me. My idol gave me time, so it was a dream for me, a dream day. I didn’t even realise how time passed, 2 hours went by. It felt really good talking to him,” he added.Since then, Mhatre has gone on to achieve success, leading India to the Under-19 World Cup title earlier this year. However, his IPL 2026 campaign began on a disappointing note, as he was dismissed for a golden duck against Rajasthan Royals.

Meanwhile, Rohit has started the season in style, scoring a blistering 78 off 38 balls to guide Mumbai Indians to victory against Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring chase of 221.For Mhatre, though, that meeting with his idol remains a defining personal milestone — one that continues to inspire his journey in the game.
