The length of teachers’ college in Ontario will soon be cut in half, from two years to one.
Most programs are currently four semesters and under upcoming legislation, teachers’ college across the province would be delivered in three consecutive semesters over 12 months.

The government says it will also establish a minimum practicum length as a way to emphasize real, in-class experience.
Teachers’ college in the province used to be one year, but in 2015 the then-Liberal government made it two years in response to a teacher surplus.
Now, however, the province is grappling with a shortage, which internal ministry documents have in recent years said could get worse in 2027.
Education Minister Paul Calandra says the changes for teachers’ college will be included in legislation to be tabled Monday, which will also address school board governance and trustees.
The province says Vaughn Solomon Schofield was 82 when she passed away following a short illness.
She served in the role as Crown representative from 2012 to 2018.
Premier Scott Moe says Solomon Schofield was dedicated to the province’s residents and deeply committed to the Canadian Armed Forces.

Before she was appointed to the role, she attended university in her hometown of Regina and later worked in business real estate.
She leaves behind two children and five grandchildren.
“Vaughn Solomon Schofield was a wonderful embodiment of the Saskatchewan spirit,” Moe said in a news release Thursday.
“She was lieutenant-governor when I became premier.

“Her decades-long commitment to our Armed Forces was steadfast and she will be missed by all who knew her.”
Gov. Gen. Mary Simon remembered Solomon Schofield in a statement as someone whose time in the Armed Forces and her dedication to public service and philanthropy made her a “cherished leader in the viceregal community.”
“Her legacy had a profound impact on our country and will inspire generations to come,” she said.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is on the verge of turning his minority government into a majority, a possibility that lies in the results of three byelections Monday.
It’s been seven years since the Liberals enjoyed a majority of seats in the House of Commons, when then-prime minister Justin Trudeau — who came into power with a majority government in 2015 — lost seats in the 2019 federal election and was reduced to a minority.
Since then, the party has had to rely on opposition votes and confidence agreements to survive and pass legislation, which under Trudeau was often shaped by compromise with parties like the NDP.
The Liberals under Carney won 169 seats in last year’s federal election. With the latest floor-crossing from the Conservatives by MP Marilyn Gladu this week, the party now holds 171 seats — just one shy of the 172-seat majority threshold.

While crossing that threshold could make Carney’s political life easier, experts say there will still be ways for the opposition, the public and even Liberal MPs to keep the prime minister in check.
“The same mechanisms of responsible government will still be in place,” said Stewart Prest, a political science lecturer at the University of British Columbia.
Here’s what that could mean in practice.
Stability and legislative power
If the Liberals win just one of Monday’s three byelections, they would have 172 seats and meet the official threshold for a majority — one that is thin, but functional.
However, one of those Liberal MPs is Speaker of the House of Commons Francis Scarpaleggia, who only votes on legislation and motions in the event of a tie.

Because a functional majority would see both the Liberals and the combined opposition parties with 171 voting members on each side, the government would have to rely on the Speaker to break those ties.

Although Scarpaleggia is a Liberal, he’s not required to vote with the government as Speaker, who will normally vote to “maintain the status quo,” according to Parliamentary procedure. That could mean preventing the government from falling in a matter of no confidence, but also to keep debate open on legislation to allow for a majority of MPs to pass it in the future.
If the Liberals win two of the three byelections Monday, they will hold 173 seats, and 174 seats if they win all three byelections, which would let them pass legislation without needing to rely on the Speaker or on any other parties to support them.
3 byelections called as Liberals near majority
The Parliament of Canada website notes that “most majority governments finish their standard four-year term in office between federal elections.”

That doesn’t mean Carney can get fully comfortable, Prest said. Even if the Liberals reach 174 seats, that will still be a slim majority.
“Mr. Carney still has to keep that majority together, he still has to keep the votes within the Liberal caucus on his side,” he said.
“If Mr. Carney really seemed to be no longer serving the interests of the party and Canadians, then there would be conversations within that Liberal caucus, and at the extreme, there would a confidence vote.”
And, just as multiple MPs have crossed the floor from the Conservatives and NDP to the Liberals since December, that possibility exists in the other direction as well.
“There are some more independently-minded Liberal MPs,” Prest said. “And clearly, if a member was willing to cross the floor to the Liberals, if things don’t go the way that they expected, they may choose to cross the floor again, or perhaps sit as an independent.”
Dissent has already shown up in the Liberal caucus under Carney, such as when former heritage minister Steven Guilbeault left cabinet last year in protest over the memorandum of understanding with Alberta on energy policy.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Thursday warned Canadians against the possibility of giving Carney “unchecked power” through a majority, which he said was formed by “dirty backroom deals” with floor-crossing MPs.

One reason Prest said he disagreed with the “unchecked power” claim is the current makeup of parliamentary committees, which must review every piece of legislation that passes first and second readings in the House of Commons.
Currently, committees reflect the minority government in the House, meaning opposition members narrowly outnumber the Liberals.
That has allowed the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois to band together and stall high-profile government bills on immigration, hate crimes and other issues over various concerns.
If the Liberals win a majority on Monday, however, that minority committee structure would remain the same. In order to change it, Carney would have to prorogue Parliament and start a new session that would restructure the committees with a majority of Liberals on each panel.
Carney said he was “absolutely not” considering such a move when asked by reporters this month, adding the possibility “has never even entered my thinking.”

“As long as the committee membership remains the same … there is a real avenue for for influence to ensure that legislation gets through that committee phase of review before it returns to the House of Commons for the third reading of the vote,” Prest said.
Even if Carney does end up proroguing Parliament and changing the committee structure, Prest said opposition members can still collectively influence legislation in a “collaborative spirit.”
If the Liberals decide to ignore that collaboration, he said the opposition can still use the “ultimate check” on politics: public opinion.
“They can bring those kinds of issues up with the population and say the Liberal government is not doing what they promised to do, not doing what Canadians are expecting,” he said.

The fluctuating price of dated Brent, the global benchmark for real-world barrels of crude, has prompted energy analysts warn to that acute stress in the physical oil market shows little sign of abating amid worries over a fragile ceasefire in the Middle East.
As energy market participants continue to monitor shipping disruption through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, an unprecedented gap has emerged between dated Brent and front-month Brent futures, suggesting supplies will remain tight for some time.
The spot price of dated Brent, which refers to physical cargoes that have been assigned delivery dates from 10 days forward to one month ahead, came in at $131.97 per barrel on Thursday afternoon, according to data compiled by Platts.
That’s up over 7% from the previous session but down from a record high of $144.42 on Tuesday, just before the U.S. and Iran announced a two-week truce.
Dated Brent is assessed based on bids, offers and trades in the open physical spot market, which means it reflects the real-world price tag of crude oil.
Brent crude futures for June delivery, meanwhile, were last seen trading 0.6% higher at $96.51 per barrel on Friday morning.
“Dated Brent at $144 is not just a price record. It’s the physical market telling you that real barrels are becoming scarce. The market is pricing in scarcity, not just risk,” Andrejka Bernatova, founder and CEO of Dynamix Corporation III, told CNBC by email.
“Even with the ceasefire bringing the number down, the underlying stress hasn’t gone away, and frankly, I think the market is getting ahead of itself,” Bernatova said.
“The Strait of Hormuz remains almost entirely blocked, and this ceasefire is fragile at best. Until those flows are actually moving again, the $144 print is less of a historical anomaly and more of a preview.”
Roughly 20% of global oil and gas typically passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow maritime corridor that connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Shipping and maritime experts have told CNBC that traffic through the critical energy artery will not normalize anytime soon.
“If refiners delay purchases in anticipation of further price declines while physical flows remain constrained, product tightness could worsen even amid de-escalation,” Janiv Shah, vice president of oil markets at Rystad Energy, said in a research note published Wednesday.
“The Brent flat price has fallen, but prompt physical differentials are likely to remain sticky, tanker rates stay elevated, and sour crude buyers continue to pay up for security of limited global supply away from the Gulf,” he continued.
“This goes to show that the perceived geopolitical risk can ease faster than operational risk,” Shah said.
Market dislocation
Strategists at Morgan Stanley said the Strait of Hormuz disruption has prompted a much more violent shock in physical Brent-linked barrels compared to the main financial contract of Brent futures.
“Dated Brent is the market’s assessment of what a prompt physical seaborne barrel is worth in Northwest Europe. ICE Brent, on the other hand, is a standardized, centrally cleared futures contract whose final cash settlement is linked to the forward Brent cargo market through a defined expiry process,” Martijn Rats, commodities strategist at Morgan Stanley, said in a research note published Tuesday.
“Those two prices are connected, but they do not measure the same exposure in time or at the same point in the chain.”
The market dislocation shows the Brent system identifying where the shock is most acute and immediate, Rats said.
Pavel Molchanov, senior analyst at Raymond James Investment, said this latest episode of supply disruption had caused traditional trading patterns between various grades of crude to break down.
“This speaks to unprecedented stress and uncertainty in the oil market,” Molchanov told CNBC by email.
Among some examples of this, Molchanov said Brent crude futures typically traded $3 to $5 per barrel higher than U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures over the past decade, although WTI briefly surpassed a premium of more than $10 during the Middle East crisis.
Russian Urals crude oil prices, meanwhile, reached levels as much as $30 above Brent in recent weeks, Molchanov said, noting that Urals have traded at steep discounts to Brent since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
Molchanov also pointed out that Saudi Arabia raised the premium for Arab Light crude over Oman/Dubai benchmark to $19.50, adding that this premium had “never before” exceeded the $10 level.

MONTREAL – Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the Montreal Canadiens dressing room after the team’s 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in a thrilling game Thursday night.
Carney was in Montreal for a Liberal party convention running through Saturday, attending the game following a day of media appearances and speeches across the city.
He met with Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki, forwards Alex Newhook and Jake Evans, and defenceman Mike Matheson after an eventful game that featured fights, a dramatic finish and Cole Caufield scoring his 50th goal of the season.
“I’m going to be honest, I haven’t had that much fun in over a year,” Carney said, drawing laughs from the players. “Fantastic game.”

Carney arrived at the start of the second period with the score 0-0 and sat three rows behind the Canadiens’ bench, shaking hands and chatting with nearby fans.

When Caufield scored his milestone goal six minutes into the period, Carney jumped up and hugged those same spectators.
He joined the energetic crowd in doing the wave, took photos on his phone and high-fived fans once Juraj Slafkovsky’s late goal sealed the win for Montreal, the only Canadian team to clinch a Stanley Cup playoff spot so far.
Carney placed a hand on his chest and applauded as he entered the locker room, telling players they needed no introduction.
“It’s a real, real honour,” he said while shaking Suzuki’s hand. “It was a key moment in the game, the way you stood up, it was unbelievable.”
Suzuki answered that it was a real pleasure to meet him.
“Is that all you got?” Carney joked.
Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis, meanwhile, said he discussed “leadership” with Carney when they briefly met after the game.
Carney wore two different Canadiens hats despite being a lifelong Edmonton Oilers fan. He grew up in Edmonton during the Wayne Gretzky era and was a third-string goaltender at Harvard University.

Last March, he joined Connor McDavid and the Oilers at practice and previously posted a photo of himself wearing a “McJesus” T-shirt.
The Liberal convention in Montreal — and Carney’s visit to the game — comes ahead of three byelections on Monday, and a day after a fifth opposition MP crossed the floor to join the Liberal caucus.

An expected nomination hearing for Federal Reserve chair candidate Kevin Warsh has been delayed, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC on Thursday evening.
Warsh had been set to appear before the Senate Banking Committee on April 16. That won’t happen, but the hearing is still expected soon, the person said, requesting anonymity as the details have not been made public by the committee.
The committee’s rules require that it give a week’s notice before the hearing is held, and the panel first needs to collect paperwork from the nominee, including financial disclosures. The Banking Committee has yet to receive Warsh’s paperwork, according to three people familiar with the Senate process.
The committee has not formally noticed the hearing. The deadline for doing so was Thursday. Punchbowl earlier reported the delay to Warsh’s hearing.
Warsh’s finances may be especially complicated. He is married to Estée Lauder cosmetics heir Jane Lauder, whose net worth is estimated at $1.9 billion, according to Forbes.

Financial disclosures filed in 2006, when Warsh was nominated for an earlier stint at the Fed, listed nearly 1,200 assets, the vast majority of which were held by his wife.
Since leaving the Fed in 2011, Warsh has spent 15 years working for investor Stanley Druckenmiller’s family office, where he led venture investments into tech firms, including Palantir.
President Donald Trump in January announced Warsh’s nomination to succeed Chair Jerome Powell, whose term as the Fed’s top official expires May 15.
National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told Fox Business in an interview on Thursday that he is “highly confident” that Warsh will be in place by the end of Powell’s term as chair.
While the Trump administration appears confident about Warsh’s confirmation, it will be difficult for him to advance beyond a hearing unless Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., drops a blockade of the nomination.
Tillis is refusing to vote for any Fed nominee until the Department of Justice drops a criminal probe into Powell. Tillis and Powell have called that investigation a politically motivated effort to undermine the Fed’s independence.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro told CNBC on Wednesday that she plans to move forward with the investigation. That leaves Warsh’s path beyond the hearing unclear.

Marilyn Gladu crossed the floor from the Conservative caucus to join the Liberals because it was the “best thing” for her riding, the country and herself, the Sarnia MP said Thursday night in Montreal.
Gladu stole the opening show at the Liberal national convention after she stunned political circles across the country by unexpectedly crossing the floor from the Tories earlier this week.
After just a day in her new party, Gladu told reporters in a late-night scrum that she’s “super excited” to be at her first Liberal confab in Quebec, and she’s “proud to be part of the prime minister’s new government” at a “critical moment for the country.”
Liberals kick off convention after latest Tory defection
The former Conservative MP has come under scrutiny for her history of taking positions that clash with Liberal policy and for her past alignment with the Freedom Convoy and vaccine skeptics. But she showered praise Thursday evening on the Liberals’ economic agenda and pledged to promote the party’s core values.

“I will vote with the government, I will protect the rights and freedoms of women to chose, for people to be who they are and love who they love,” she said, and noted she’s “ready to support the rights of women in this country.”
Earlier in the day — in a scene carefully orchestrated for TV cameras — Prime Minister Mark Carney and an entourage of cabinet ministers walked recent Liberal convert Gladu through throngs of party members lined up in the convention hall for selfies and handshakes.
Little more than a year ago, in the waning days of Justin Trudeau’s leadership, Liberals were gloomily contemplating almost certain electoral defeat at the hands of the Conservatives.
But as Liberals gathered for their national convention Thursday, the face of the party looked a lot more like it did when Trudeau’s father ran it: a brokerage party made up of people with disparate views.
That, at least, was the impression prominent Liberals were trying to convey.
Another floor crossing brings Carney’s government ever-closer to a majority
One day after Gladu left the Conservative benches to join the government side, Liberal House leader Steven MacKinnon told reporters outside the convention hall Thursday the party is “obviously extremely happy to welcome Marilyn” to the fold.

“Many people who live in Conservative ridings are responding positively to the kind of policies that Mr. Carney is putting forward, that the Liberal party is proud to put forward,” he said. “Obviously, Marilyn is one of those. We know there are others who want to be part of the positive building of the country that we’re undertaking.”

Supporters were all smiles before the TV cameras, cheering on the fourth ex-Tory to join their ranks.
Cabinet ministers and party members defended her decision to cross the floor.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the “party of government” should be able to host “all perspectives within Parliament.”
“I welcome Marilyn Gladu with open arms, as I have with Lori Idlout and all the others,” he said, mentioning the former New Democrat who crossed the floor to the Liberals last month.
“Ultimately, we will keep expanding and make sure we’re an open and welcome place for Canadians of all political stripes to join.”
Health Minister Marjorie Michel said Gladu is welcome under the party’s “real big tent.”
“If people are coming to us, I think it’s because we’re more welcoming maybe than others,” she said.
Liberal MP Chris D’Entremont, the first of the four former Conservatives to cross the aisle since late last year, said it’s time to “put our political sides aside and actually focus on the things that are important for Canadians.”

“That’s what you saw in the floor crossings and I think that’s what you’re seeing in the Canadian citizenship where they’re looking across Canada and saying, ‘That guy’s got a plan that makes sense to me,’” he said.
Bill Kudla, a former supporter of the late NDP leader Jack Layton, ran in 2025 for the Liberals in a New Brunswick riding but was defeated by the Conservative incumbent Rob Moore. He said Canadians should be allowed to change their political views and that now is the time to band together in the face of American aggression.
Longtime Conservative Marilyn Gladu crosses floor, Liberals 1 seat shy of majority
“To have a stable government for four years while (U.S. President Donald Trump) is in power is extremely important. I’d rather not run again right now in lieu of having a stable government so that we can fight back,” he said.
The opposition floor crossers have brought a majority government within reach for the Carney Liberals — though MacKinnon and other cabinet ministers said they did not want to count their chickens before they hatch.

The convention kicked off just ahead of three byelections scheduled for Monday, two in Liberal strongholds. The results are expected to grant the Liberals a majority mandate without the need to call a general election.
The party is also riding high in the polls nationally. Polling aggregator 338Canada has the Liberals at 45 per cent support.
Zita Astravas, a consultant with Wellington Advocacy and Trudeau’s former director of issues management, said Liberals from across the country are “feeling pretty good” right now.
“There’s a spring in people’s steps being a Liberal in politics right now,” she said.
“It’s not about patting themselves on the back, but momentum and energy are important in a political party,” said Jonathan Kalles, a consultant with McMillan Vantage who formerly served as Quebec adviser to Trudeau. “Right now the Liberals have it, so it’s an opportune time to get everyone together.”
Carney is set to address the convention on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET — the first time he has done so since winning the leadership.
Kalles said many at the party level still know little about Carney and the convention offers a way for them to get to know him, and for party brass to check the pulse of the grassroots.
That’s going to become increasingly important for Carney as the caucus gets more diverse and more challenging to manage, he said.

“With people that have such diverse points of view and are fairly ideological, that becomes a challenge. Most Liberals may lean one side or the other, but I would say they are not particularly ideological,” Kalles said. “I don’t know that it’s sustainable in the long term.”
Cameron Ahmad, a former director of communications for Trudeau, said five months of floor crossers in Parliament sends “a really strong signal that the party is doing well” and shows the party remains an “inclusive and welcoming place.”
Ahmad said Carney has re-energized the party and he remembers feeling a similar electricity in the air when Trudeau was first elected leader.
“There was such a breath of fresh air into the party and people felt like there was a renewal,” Ahmad said.
Azam Ishmael, the Liberal party’s national director, boasted Thursday that the party expects a “record-breaking number” of supporters to attend the convention — around 4,500 members.

President Donald Trump on Thursday condemned a violent video allegedly showing a Haitian illegal alien fatally attacking a Florida mother with a hammer last week, blasting the Biden administration for releasing the suspect in 2022.
Rolbert Joachim, 40, is charged with second-degree murder and criminal damage to property after he was caught on camera bludgeoning the mother of two in broad daylight last Friday outside a Fort Myers gas station.
“An Illegal Alien Criminal from Haiti, who was released into our Country by the WORST President in History, Crooked Joe Biden, and the Radical Democrats in Congress, just beat an innocent woman to death with a hammer at a gas station in Florida,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “The video of her brutal slaying is one of the most vicious things you will ever see.

Trump condemned a video of a Haitian immigrant allegedly killing a Florida mother with a hammer in broad daylight.
Joachim first entered the U.S. in August 2022, and was released into the country under former President Joe Biden, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Trump further said Democrats are turning the United States into what he called a “dumping ground,” flooded with tens of millions of unvetted and “mentally insane” individuals.
“To my fellow Republicans, and frankly all Common Sense Americans, NEVER FORGET that Joe Biden and the Democrat Party turned the United States of America into a dumping ground, allowing Tens of MILLIONS of Criminals, Lunatics, and the Mentally Insane from all over the World to pour into our Country, totally unvetted and unchecked through our wide Open Borders,” he said.
“As I’ve said all along, if you import the Third World, you become the Third World, and that is what happened over the four years of Democrat Control.”

In the attack, the female victim was reportedly a store clerk at the gas station.
According to the footage, she was repeatedly struck in the head with a hammer after confronting the suspect for smashing her car window.

Trump urged prayers for the victim, who was the mother of two teenage daughters, according to a reportfrom local outlet Gulf Coast News.

“Please say a prayer for this innocent woman’s family. We will ensure quick and severe JUSTICE is served in this case!” Trump said.

The University of Calgary is exploring the construction of a new stadium on its campus for its various varsity sports teams, after years of quietly fundraising for the project.
Those teams currently play at McMahon Stadium, a shared home for the University of Calgary Dinos and Calgary Stampeders since it was built 66 years ago.
“We’ve known for some time that the Dinos will outlive McMahon Stadium,” said Nick Holt, the dean of UCalgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology.
“We need a long-term solution to ensure the future of Dinos programming.”
That long-term solution could come in the form of a “fit-for-varsity stadium,” in which UCalgary plans to seek bids for design work in the coming days after “quiet phase” fundraising $21 million alongside the Dino’s 5th Quarter, the football team’s alumni group.

According to university officials, the proposal being explored would be a training and competition stadium with a capacity between 3,500 and 7,000 seats that could support multiple Dinos field sports, including football, soccer, and rugby.
The stadium would include a “seasonal dome” to allow for year-round use, and would be open to the public when it’s not in use, Holt told Global News.
“A big part of our vision is making it available to the community,” Holt said. “We know there’s a huge shortage of facilities in Calgary, we also know there’s a massive shortage in the wintertime so our vision is to have a seasonal dome and make it available to the community in the winter.”

According to Moshe Lander, an economist at Concordia University, the move signals McMahon Stadium is “not financially viable,” and opens the door to significant redevelopment on the site.
“Building something that’s much more in line with university athletics in Canada seems much more reasonable,” he told Global News.
“Once McMahon is no longer in use, there’s a huge opportunity there to build, whether it’s dorms, building or infrastructure to support a growing campus.”
The move is raising questions about where the Calgary Stampeders will play in the future as the university’s proposal is smaller than typical CFL venues.

In a statement, Calgary Stampeders president Jay McNeil said McMahon Stadium has been “an incredible home” for the team, but the building is “reaching the end of its functional life.”
“The conversation about what comes next must be led by the community it serves,” McNeil’s statement said. “This isn’t just about football — it’s about what Calgarians want for their city: a modern, accessible and welcoming gathering place that supports sport, culture and year‑round community use.”
While the building is owned by the University of Calgary, it’s the McMahon Stadium Society that oversees its operations and upgrades.
The McMahon Stadium Society’s chair, Steve Allan, told Global News he’s “rooting” for the university’s success in its proposal, as conversations are in early stages about a new home for the Stampeders.
“We’ve been working on this for about four years now when I realized we won’t be getting any more money to put into McMahon,” Allan said Thursday.
Last month, Calgary Stampede officials hinted future planned upgrades to the infield seating at GMC Stadium could make way for field sports to be played on the site.
According to Allan, moving the Calgary Stampeders to an upgraded facility on the Stampede Grounds is a logical step.
“The Calgary Stampede already has the guts of a stadium, they attract people down there, they have transportation, they have parking,” Allan said, “They’ve got a lot of what we need so I think it makes a ton of sense.”

Back at the university, officials expect to receive initial designs for a potential stadium by the fall to firm up timelines and costs, with a “more public” campaign to raise funds for the project in the coming months.
According to Holt, officials continue to assess potential locations for the stadium on the campus’ west side, noting the project is “years, not decades” away.
“The key thing is to be on campus to bring the energy to our campus and give something for our students to really get behind,” he said.
McMahon Stadium is set to host the 113th Grey Cup game later this year.
