Trump breaks silence on Andrew’s arrest as president faces fury over Epstein: ‘It’s very sad. It’s so bad for the royal family’

Donald Trump said he was ‘very sad’ to see Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The ex-prince was arrested on his 66th birthday after British police raided his luxurious estate in Sandringham.

Speaking to reporters on Airforce One, Trump said: ‘I think it’s a shame. I think it’s very sad. I think it’s so bad for the royal family. It’s very, very sad. To me, it’s a very sad thing.’

The President praised King Charles III as a fantastic person ‘who’s obviously coming to our country very soon.’

Trump also claimed he was ‘totally exonerated’ after the release of the Epstein documents. Following Andrew’s arrest, Trump has faced mounting pressure over the lack of arrests in the US connected to Epstein.

Andrew faced renewed scrutiny over his relationship with deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein after the Justice Department released three million documents related to the financier last month.

A photograph of Andrew lying on the floor with a young woman emerged as part of the DOJ’s Epstein document release.

Andrew was released from custody on Thursday evening after spending nearly the entire day in police custody. He became the first senior royal to be arrested in modern times.

Charles and his heir Prince William are expected to visit the US in late April as the royal family faces their most troubling scandal since the death of Princess Diana.

The former prince looked shellshocked as he slouched in the back of a car leaving Aylsham police station in Norfolk shortly after 7pm.

In a statement released minutes after Andrew’s departure, British police authorities said ‘a man in his sixties’ has been released but is under investigation.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police noted that authorities had finished conducting a search in Norfolk near Andrew’s new residence, Wood Farm.

The former Duke of York was reportedly arrested over allegations he passed sensitive information to Epstein while acting as a trade envoy for the British government.

The King was not given any prior warning of Andrew’s arrest, it emerged today, although the Daily Mail revealed Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s team was informed by a senior officer early this morning.

The monarch said in an unprecedented statement that ‘the law must take its course’ after expressing his ‘deepest concern’ after his younger brother was held on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Charles said: ‘I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office.

‘What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.

‘Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.

‘As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all’.

Inside Iran’s hellish Evin jail where British couple face 10 years of torture

For the next 10 years, Lindsay and Craig Foreman may call one of Iran’s most notorious prisons home.

The British couple were jailed today over allegations of espionage after being arrested last year during an around-the-world motorcycle journey.

They’re currently held in Evin prison, a detention facility in Tehran where dissidents and political prisoners are held.

Human rights campaigners have long viewed the jail as a symbol of the iron-fisted rule of the Islamic Republic.

The Foremans, who deny all wrongdoing, have described being holed up in eight-foot cells with nothing more than a hole in the floor and a sink.

Here’s what to know about the prison.

What is Evin prison?

The compound, opened in 1971, sits on the picturesque slopes of the Alborz Mountain in northern Tehran.

Within a few years, the institution gained a reputation for the conditions prisoners face inside.

In 1988, thousands of prisoners were executed after cursory trials in what the Human Rights Watch called the ‘darkest period in Evin’s history’.

Inmates include opposition politicians campaigner’s journalists, lawyers and even students, with concrete walls, electrified barbed-wire fences and a minefield between them and the outside world.

Citizens of foreign countries and dual citizens have routinely been placed in Evin, such as French nationals Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris.

The pair, who were imprisoned on charges of spying for France and Israel, were held for three years before being freed last year.

These years-long prison sentences have led to the UK and the US accusing Iran of using foreign nationals as political bargaining chips.

Also among them are the protesters who took to the streets in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman arrested by the country’s so-called morality police.

During the unrest, a fire broke out at Evin amid clashes between prisoners who had been staging sit-ins and chanting anti-government slogans.

Although Amnesty International said the fire was used as a justification for the bloody crackdown that followed at the hands of prison guards.

Israel targeted Evin prison last year, killing 79 people and wounding dozens, including prison guards, prisoners and visiting family members.

At least six projectiles damaged 28 buildings, reducing stretches to piles of debris and mangled metal beams. Human Rights Watch said this amounted to a war crime.

What are conditions like at the prison?

Harsh treatment and abuse are widespread, according to former prisoners.

They say they have gruelling interrogations, torture, rape, psychological humiliation and solitary confinement.

Some ex-inmates say they endured hours-long interrogations while blindfolded and the lights were constantly on in their cells to stop them from sleeping.

All they could hear were the cries from the other cells or the barks from prison guards threatening their families.

Bed bugs, cockroaches and rats are said to scuttle through the feet of the sometimes dozens of people housed in halls with just four rooms.

That includes Craig, who said he spent 57 days in confinement, which ’emotionally and physically’ broke him.

Lindsay told the BBC that she has spends her days running ‘in circles’ in the prison’s cramped yard.

She told the broadcaster: ‘I’ve resigned myself to the fact that my physical health might not be what it was when I came in but I can regain it when I leave…

‘I’m surrounded by people who are in worse situations who have to live this their entire life, so in some way I feel lucky that I’ve had the life I have until this point – and hopefully one day for me it will end.’

King Charles reacts to Andrew’s bombshell arrest as police raid homes in Windsor and Sandringham: Live updates

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office after police visited his new home on the Sandringham estate this morning.

The former Duke of York has been taken into custody while officers search properties in Norfolk and Berkshire – his former home at Royal Lodge.

It comes as police detectives probe his conduct as a trade envoy for the UK after emails in the Epstein Files suggested he shared confidential information with his paedophile friend including reports of his official visits and potential investment opportunities.

King Charles said the ‘law must take its course’ in his first public remarks reacting to the arrest with his statement supported by the Prince and Princess of Wales

The King has said ‘the law must take its course’ after expressing his ‘deepest concern’ over the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Charles III revealed that the police will have his ‘wholehearted support and co-operation’ after his younger brother was held on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Calling for a ‘full, fair and proper process’, the King added: ‘My family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all’.

The disgraced former Duke of York was held on his 66th birthday today and is in custody at a secret location after a morning raid on his new Norfolk home was first revealed by the Daily Mail.

He can be held without charge for 24 hours, which begins upon arrival at a police station.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor ‘pushed through’ the appointment of Jeffrey Epstein’s fixer to the board of a Windsor Castle trust despite opposition from members, it was claimed today.

The former prince, who turns 66 today, is said to have ‘imposed’ David Stern, a close confidant of the paedophile financier, on board members of the St George’s House Trust in 2016.

German businessman Stern features in at least 7,461 documents in the Epstein files and is seen in a photograph alongside Andrew and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson.

The 48-year-old is understood to have been introduced to the former Duke and Duchess of York in 2009 by Epstein, and went on to become a close friend of the couple.

Documents released in the files appear to show that Stern accompanied Andrew on trips to China and southeast Asia during his time as a trade envoy and served as a director of Andrew’s Pitch@Palace startup from 2017 to 2019.

When Stern, who described Epstein as ‘my boss’, was proposed to the board by Andrew, other members are said to have raised concerns about his background.

This Morning host Alison Hammond has been blasted for making a ‘moronic’ comment about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest live on air.

The ITV star was joined by Dermot O’Leary, Nick Ferrari and Sonia Sodha for the news segment of the breakfast show when talk turned to the arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Talking about the breaking news story at the start of the show, Alison, 51, was quick to offer up her opinion on Mountbatten-Windsor being arrested on his birthday.

She told her co-stars: ‘They could’ve done it yesterday, the day before his birthday.’

Alison continued: ‘It is developing, we don’t know very much beyond what you’ve just said. All we know is that police can tell you.’

Viewers of the ITV series immediately flooded social media platform X, formerly Twitter, to hit back against Alison’s comment, calling it ‘weird’.

What CPS and police need to prove following Andrew’s misconduct arrest

Misconduct in public office is notoriously difficult to define, let alone prove, with only 191 people convicted between 2014 and 2024.

Authorities will have to find clear evidence that Andrew was in a public office role, and that he knowingly abused or exploited his position.

Sean Caulfield, a criminal defence lawyer at Hodge Jones & Allen, said:

Proving misconduct in a public office is an extremely high bar. Firstly, it must be determined if Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was in a role within government that constitutes the title of public officer.

There is no standard definition to clearly draw on, but case law indicates that a public officer is someone who holds an office of trust or performs a public duty.

Thames Valley Police previously said it was reviewing allegations that Andrew shared sensitive information with Jeffrey Epstein while serving as the UK’s trade envoy.

The case will rest on whether sharing confidential government briefing documents constitutes an abuse of the public’s trust, Mr Caulfield added.

The King has carried on with his duties as monarch in the wake of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest.

Charles continued with his planned ambassadorial in-person audiences in the Throne Room at St James’s Palace on Thursday.

He was pictured welcoming the ambassador of El Salvador Francisco Lima Mena as part of a series of audiences at the royal residence.

The monarch earlier vowed he and the royal family would ‘continue in our duty and service to you all’ after issuing a written statement insisting the ‘law must take its course’ and expressing his ‘deep concern’ over allegations against his younger brother of misconduct in public office.

Andrew’s ‘seismic’ arrest leaves Royal Family in ‘uncharted waters’

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt has claimed the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has left the Royal Family facing a situation it is ‘ill-equipped to navigate’.

Mr Hunt said senior royals find themselves in ‘uncharted waters’ following the Epstein scandal which has rocked the UK’s political and royal institutions.

He told the Press Association:

The arrest of the eighth in line to the British throne is seismic. Senior royals are now in uncharted waters that they are ill-equipped to navigate.

They will have to answer questions about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and be held accountable, something which, up until now, has been an alien concept for them.

Watch: Why Andrew’s arrest is ‘ghastly’ for King Charles

Royal commentator Alastair Bruce has explained why Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest will be ‘ghastly’ for King Charles as he reacted to the bombshell developments today.

Former prime minister Gordon Brown has revealed he has sent new information to police in the wake of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest earlier today.

Mr Brown, who led the UK from 2007 to 2010, said:

I have submitted a five-page memorandum to the Metropolitan, Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley and other relevant UK police constabularies.

This memorandum provides new and additional information to that which I submitted last week to the Met, Essex and Thames Valley police forces where I expressed my concern that we secure justice for trafficked girls and women.

Mr Brown has previously police to interview Andrew as part of a new investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and his ‘Lolita Express’ private jet.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have expressed their support for the King’s statement following the arrest of his brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Prince William and Princess Catherine approve of King Charles’ words issued this morning, the Press Association understands.

The King has said ‘the law must take its course’ after expressing his ‘deepest concern’ over the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Charles III revealed that the police would have his ‘wholehearted support and co-operation’ after his younger brother was held on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The Prince and Princess of Wales also support the King’s unprecedented statement following the arrest of William’s uncle Andrew at Sandringham on Thursday.

Virginia Giuffre’s lawyer: Andrew’s arrest marks ‘monumental moment’ for Epstein survivors

A lawyer who represented Virginia Giuffre and other victims of Jeffrey Epstein hailed the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor as a ‘monumental moment’ for survivors.

Sigrid McCawley, who was assigned to represent Ms Giuffre in 2014, said in a statement:

This is truly a monumental moment in the Epstein survivor’s relentless pursuit of justice.

Virginia Guiffre worked for years to shine a light on the crimes being committed by Epstein and his co-conspirators and to send the message that no one should be above the law and the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor today is a step toward that accountability

What now for Sarah Ferguson? Whereabouts of Andrew’s ex-wife and daughters remain unknown as former prince is arrested over public misconduct claims

Questions are mounting over Sarah Ferguson’s future after her ex-husband Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested at Sandringham today.

The former Duchess of York, 66, has been lying low amid growing outrage over her ties to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and is recently said to have spent time with friends in the French Alps before moving on to the United Arab Emirates.

She has also been spending time with her youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie, 35, who has been in the region for work, attending an art fair in Doha, Qatar, in her role as a director at dealer Hauser and Wirth.

But Fergie who has, along with her former husband Andrew, become a pariah in Britain has not been seen in public since September 25 2025 – when she was photographed being driven out of Royal Lodge.

Until recently the disgraced pair – who Fergie once described as the ‘happiest divorced couple in the world’ – continued to live together at Andrew’s vast Windsor mansion, a staggering three decades after their split.

But her future was plunged into further uncertainty today after Andrew, the eighth in line to the British throne who turns 66 today, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and is being held in custody.

Multiple unmarked police cars were seen swooping on Andrew’s new home in Sandringham, Norfolk, where he has been living since he and Sarah were forced out of Royal Lodge.

This is the first time the former prince, who has faced a several allegations relating to convicted sex offender Epstein, has been arrested.

Detectives are now carrying searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk, Thames Valley Police said.  It is not confirmed which properties are being searched but Royal Lodge is in Windsor, Berkshire, while his new home, Wood Farm is in Sandringham, Norfolk.

Andrew’s dramatic arrest comes in stark contrast to his ex-wife, Sarah, who has been keeping a low profile since leaving Royal Lodge.

But sources say she has openly told friends: ‘I need to get back to work. I need money.’

It comes after emails between the ex-duchess and Epstein show her repeatedly chasing him for money to pay off her debts, as well as practical support over a considerable period of time.

They contain evidence she remained in close contact with him after he was released from prison for sex offences against children, even taking her two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, to have lunch with him five days after his release.

She also privately issued a grovelling apology to Epstein for publicly denouncing him, claiming she only did so to protect her career as a children’s author.

She told him he had been a ‘steadfast, generous and supreme friend’.

As the fallout continues, friends believe that she may conclude that the only place where her former royal status may still open doors is in the Middle East.

Earlier this week, royal author Andrew Lownie, who wrote a damning book on the scandal-hit couple called Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, said he believes that multi-millionaires in Dubai and the surrounding countries of Bahrain and Qatar will probably be bankrolling Fergie already.

He said: ‘In Britain neither Sarah or Andrew will be socially accepted again whatever they try to do or wherever they go. But in the Middle East no one will care about what they have got up to.

‘There are people there – royalty, politicians and business types – whom Sarah can quite happily sponge off and who will be happy to bankroll both of them.

‘These types of people in the Middle East simply couldn’t care less what Sarah has done. And even if she doesn’t have her title of the Duchess of York anymore, she will still be seen as royalty and treated as such – and she knows it.’

Sarah and her daughters, Eugenie and Beatrice, will no doubt be rocked by Andrew’s high-profile arrest today. They have not commented yet.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: ‘As part of the investigation, we have today (19/2) arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk.

‘The man remains in police custody at this time.

‘We will not be naming the arrested man, as per national guidance. Please also remember that this case is now active so care should be taken with any publication to avoid being in contempt of court.’

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said: ‘Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.

‘It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence.

‘We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.’

Tucker Carlson ‘DETAINED’ in Israel: Journalist ‘dragged into interrogation room’ as explosive interview sparks diplomatic firestorm

Conservative podcasting titan Tucker Carlson said he and his staff were detained in Israel on Wednesday following an interview with Donald Trump’s ambassador to the country.

The former Fox News host flew into Tel Aviv for a sit-down with Mike Huckabee, who challenged Carlson to speak to him directly following an online spat about the country’s treatment of Christians.

Carlson, who also frequently criticizes Israel for its military actions in Gaza, took Huckabee up on his offer.

But as critics and pro-Israel activists began piling on Carlson for purportedly not leaving the airport during his brief visit, he revealed that he was met with hostility in the Middle Eastern country.

Carlson exclusively told the Daily Mail that shortly after the interview, Israeli officials confiscated his passport and hauled one of his colleagues off to an interrogation room.

‘Men who identified themselves as airport security took our passports, hauled our executive producer into a side room and then demanded to know what we spoke to Ambassador Huckabee about,’ Carlson told the Daily Mail.

Tucker Carlson ‘DETAINED’ in Israel: Journalist ‘dragged into interrogation room’ as explosive interview sparks diplomatic firestorm

Tucker Carlson says he and his staff were detained at Ben Gurion airport and interrogated by Israeli officials on Wednesday following an interview with US Ambassador Mike Huckabee

‘Too bad Tucker stayed in the airport in the face of so many invitations to see so many wonderful places. A huge and obviously intentional missed opportunity,’ taunted David Friedman, the former US ambassador to Israel during Trump’s first term.

Two sources familiar with the matter, however, told the Daily Mail that the Israeli government initially did not want to allow Carlson into the country, prompting a delicate negotiation involving the State Department.

In the end, the Israeli government decided not to bar Carlson from entering the country in order to avoid a ‘diplomatic incident,’ according to a Channel 13 report.

A spokesman for the US embassy in Israel denied that Carlson was detained and claimed he ‘received the same passport control questions that countless visitors to Israel, including Ambassador Huckabee and other diplomats, receive as part of normal entrance and exit from Israel.’

‘It is not accurate that Israel only was going to let Tucker into the country for the interview,’ the representative added.

‘The only engagement the Embassy had with Israel about his visit was to coordinate his private plane landing as part of facilitating a seamless visit. It was Tucker who chose to only come into the country for a few hours and depart. And Tucker received the same positive treatment of any visitors to Israel.’

The Daily Mail has contacted the White House and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office for comment.

Carlson accused Huckabee last week on his YouTube show of not ensuring proper protections for Christians in Israel.

Huckabee, who has known Carlson for more than three decades and previously worked with him at Fox News, responded by inviting him to Israel for a discussion.

‘Instead of talking about me, why don’t you come talk to me?’ Huckabee wrote on X. Carlson replied by welcoming the invitation, before noting that they were working on setting up the interview.

Israel’s popularity remains at an all-time low in the GOP among young Republican voters and Trump supporters.

The Carlson-Huckabee event was reportedly an attempt by the Trump administration to prevent debates surrounding Israel from breaking the GOP’s conservative coalition ahead of the midterms.

FBI ‘has names and photos of people who may be masked suspect caught on surveillance video outside Nancy Guthrie’s home’

The FBI reportedly has names and photos of people who match the description of the masked suspect caught on surveillance footage outside of Nancy Guthrie’s home the night she disappeared.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on the night of January 31. Authorities believe she was kidnapped in the early hours of February 1.

Nancy seemingly disappeared without a trace. Law enforcement’s first leads were blood on her front door and a disconnected front door camera.

A break in the case came on February 10 when the FBI uncovered previously lost surveillance footage from the night she disappeared, revealing a masked individual approaching her home.

The FBI now reportedly has names and photos of people who match the mysterious masked man, CBS News reported.

The eerie footage shows what authorities believe is a man disabling Nancy’s camera. The suspect was also carrying what appears to be a gun in a holster.

Local business and gun shop owners told CBS that authorities have asked them if they recognize any names and faces that could potentially be the suspect.

One gun shop owner told the outlet that he received a packet from law enforcement with photos of driver’s licenses and pictures from social media.

Nancy Guthrie, right, has been missing for 18 days in what authorities are investigating as a kidnapping. Her daughter, Today show host Savannah Guthrie, left, has publicly pleaded in video messages for Nancy’s alleged captor to return her safely

The gun shop owner told authorities that he didn’t recognize any of the names or faces. He searched the company’s purchase history for names, but no leads came of it.

Philip Martin, the co-owner of Armor Bearer Arms, told local CBS affiliate, KOLD, that an FBI agent visited his shop sometime between February 10 and 12.

Martin said he received a packet of between 18 and 24 images and names to check if any had purchased a gun at his store in the last year.

He searched the company database but didn’t find any matches. The FBI agent didn’t disclose what the names were regarding, but Martin told KOLD he believed they matched the suspect’s description.

‘Based on that video I saw of the kidnapper at the house who was caught on camera — the facial hair that I saw on the video reminds me a lot of these photographs,’ Martin told KOLD.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told Fox News that investigators haven’t narrowed their search down to a specific group.

When asked whether authorities have identified around 40 people as potential suspects, Nanos replied that those claims were false.

‘We haven’t narrowed it down to anything other than we have pieces of evidence that we’re looking at to try to find this individual,’ the sheriff added.

Nancy Guthrie cops investigate abductor’s ‘pinky ring’ spotted under glove in doorbell footage as NEW ‘sophisticated’ ransom note comes to light

Investigators in Nancy Guthrie’s case have turned their attention toward a pinky ring that they believe her alleged abductor was wearing in the chilling doorbell camera footage taken before she vanished.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said on Tuesday that the unknown male suspect seen on the porch of her Tucson, Arizona home appeared to be wearing a ring under his black gloves.

‘I look at the same photo you look at and I get it, I see it,’ Nanos told NBC News, referring to the mysterious figure who was seen in the clip.

‘I’m going to give that to my team. They’ll look at that. They’ll analyze it and we’ll see. Maybe, maybe it is.’

Meanwhile TMZ announced on Wednesday that it has received a new ‘sophisticated’ ransom note in connection to missing Nancy, who is the mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie.

It comes as the search for the 84-year-old enters its 17th day, with still no sign of a suspect or person of interest.

‘We have received yet another ransom demand—this one is sophisticated and puts the media right in the middle of it,’ TMZ wrote in an Instagram post.

The latest letter demands another large amount of money, but in another cryptocurrency form other than the previously requested $6 million in bitcoin, per the outlet.

The email also ‘graphically describes the consequences if the ransom isn’t paid,’ the report stated.

The message included a cryptocurrency account number which differs from one that was originally sent in previous ransom demands.

The outlet also revealed that the FBI has contacted law enforcement in Mexico, though the expansion of the investigation has not yielded any new leads.

The latest update in the mysterious investigation comes after a similar glove found two miles from Nancy’s home failed to match DNA found inside of her property, officials said.

Nanos said the glove offered no new leads after failing to match the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) – a national archive of all DNA from arrestees nationwide.

The singular glove was discovered on Sunday and became a briefly regarded piece of evidence in the ongoing case.

Several leads and pieces of evidence have popped up along the way, but none of them have stuck.

Persons of interest were previously taken in for questioning, but later released. A number of ransom notes, including several sent to TMZ, have also been revealed.

Nancy was last seen on the night of January 31 after going to her eldest daughter’s house for dinner and a game night.

Her daughter Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni, then drove her back home, just a few miles away.

Cioni told police he watched his mother-in-law enter her garage door that night.

Hours later, around 2.12am, Nancy’s Nest doorbell camera detected a person on camera.

Around 2.30am Nancy’s Apple Watch and iPhone stopped syncing with her pacemaker.

She was reported missing at around 11am after local church friends grew worried after Nancy failed to show up for services.

They then notified her family, leading her relatives to check on her home.

After not locating her, the family dialed 911 and reported her missing. She has not been seen or heard from since.

Her heartbroken children have taken to social media multiple times pleading for their mother’s safe return home.

On Sunday night, Savannah shared a somber video to Instagram, begging her mother’s captors to ‘do the right thing’.

‘And I wanted to say to whoever has her or knows where she is that it’s never too late, and you’re not lost or alone, and it is never too late to do the right thing,’ the Today Show host said.

‘We are here and we believe, and we believe in the essential goodness of every human being, and it’s never too late,’ she concluded the video, which she captioned ‘bring her home’.

The villagers cut off from civilisation after storm destroyed coastal road that connects them to the outside world… and no one knows who’ll pay £18m bill to fix it

Villagers have been stranded after a massive storm destroyed the coastal road that connects them to the outside world and nobody knows where they’ll get the £18million to fix it.

The A379 into Torcross was swept into the sea after being pummeled by 12ft waves and 60mph winds in Storm Imogen in south Devon earlier this month.

It was not the only casualty in the storm. Landlady Gail Stubbs’ pub, the Start Bay Inn, was smashed up by the deluge along with several neighbouring houses.

The road runs a precarious two-mile stretch along a narrow shingle bar between Torcross and nearby Slapton and is nicknamed ‘The Slapton Line’.

After the storm, 200 metres of the vital access road had been washed into the south Devon sea. The shingle bar had been used for rehearsals of the D-Day landings because it resembled Utah Beach in Normandy, but it looks more like a warzone now than ever.

Even if someone is found to pay the £18million bill to fix the gouges in the tarmac, repairs may not be finished until 2027.

The destruction at the pub itself and the ruined road connecting the village to the outside world have spelt misery for Mrs Stubbs’ pub.

The 47-year-old told The Telegraph: ‘We predict that our business could be down by up to 50 per cent – we don’t know whether to start hiring for the summer season or not.’

300,000 holidaymakers come to the South West each summer. Now access to Torcross is much more limited, with only one road remaining, which forces a massive detour on narrow country lanes for drivers heading to Slapton or nearby Dartmouth.

Mrs Stubbs has made the drive with her partner and said she had to stop and reverse 22 times on the trip to let other cars pass.

Her inn dates back to the 1400s, but Mrs Stubbs fears storms like this could wipe out that 600 year history. She added: ‘The damage to the village has been quite severe, and if it carries on, we may not even be here physically anymore.

‘I’m really not sure how many more storms the village can sustain.’

Windows and roofs were smashed in by rogue waves crashing over the sea wall onto a row of houses along the promenade. Alleyways were left sitting full with waist deep water.

The Start Bay Inn defiantly remains open despite its boarded-up windows. It was still busy of the half-term weekend too, as well as neighbouring cafes – admittedly due to an influx of rubbernecking ‘disaster tourists’.

But this will not last, and there are already reports of holidaymakers cancelling bookings in the wake of the news.

Gerd Masselink, professor of coastal geomorphology at the University of Plymouth, said the damage to the road, village and beach was ‘the biggest change that’s happened here in the last 10 years.’

The beach was lowered by 6.6ft in the storm, essentially amounting to over six years of damage. In the past 20 years, the beach has fallen 20ft, Masselink said.

As well as the damage to the road, several buildings including Gail Stubbs' pub the Start Bay Inn have been heavily damaged with smashed windows and roofs

Metal clanking in the waves means that Ali Willcock, owner of Torcross’s Billy Can cafe can’t  sleep. He said: ‘Everything rattles all the time, it’s impossible to sleep’

‘It is very significant but it’s part of an ongoing trend at beaches along the south coast, of gravel and sand being moved from the western end, to the eastern end,’ warned Mr Masselink.

He added: ‘We’re going to see increased flooding, we’re going to see erosion on beaches that used to be stable. We’re going to see increased erosion at beaches that are already eroding.

‘We can’t keep defending coastlines for the next 20, 30, 40 years.

‘Unless we start casting the whole coast in concrete, we have to start retreating’.

For now, however, a school bus service has been set up for children who need a lift around the collapsed road. What was once a 10-minute journey to Dartmouth now takes 45 minutes and locals are worried about access to doctors, chemists and emergency services.

Torcross is no stranger to terrible flood and storm damage. The Slapton Line has collapsed three times already in 2001, 2016 and 2018 and the government has not said it is willing to repair it yet again.

Mrs Stubbs’ inn has also seen bad storm damage, with the pool table nearly being washed out of the doors in one storm in 1979. It was this that prompted a proper sea wall being built at the village.

The £18million repair cost estimate is well over Liberal Democrat-run Devon County Council’s budget with hopes central government funding from the new £1billion Structures Fund might save the road, but nobody is confident.

‘It’s difficult when you have a road right next to the sea,’ says local Lib Dem councillor Dan Thomas. ‘Highways authorities nationwide don’t have enough money as it is, never mind roads like this.’

In a village hall meeting, things got heated with locals angry as county council leader Julian Brazil explained that government funding was limited.

They aired resourceful ideas like the Army building a pontoon bridge, the £18million be taken from the billions in the foreign aid budget, making it a toll road, even a kelp bank to protect the coastline.

A Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs spokesperson said: ‘We’re committed to supporting coastal communities through our record investment of £10.5bn in protecting against flooding and coastal erosion by 2036, benefitting nearly 900,000 properties.

‘In addition, having inherited flood defences in the worst condition on record, we have reprioritised more than £100m into urgent maintenance works to make sure defences are properly maintained.’

Tour company’s eerie video just days before monster avalanche left nine skiers missing in California as they race to find survivors and fury erupts

The tour company that organized the group of backcountry skiers who were swept away an avalanche in California warned of incoming inclement weather just two days before the storm hit.

A Blackbird Mountain Guides ski guide stationed in Mt Rose, the Tahoe’s highest elevation, on Sunday revealed that there was ‘atypical layering’ in the snow pack.

The guide, in a post on the company’s Facebook  page, warned that the extended dry season impacting the area has caused faceting, a process in which snow becomes weak.

‘As we move into a large storm cycle this week, pay close attention to places where faceting has been particularly strong – avalanches could behave abnormally, and the hazard could last longer than normal,’ the guide said, urging snow sportsmen to ‘use extra caution this week.’

But 15 skiers led by Blackbird Mountain Guides were on Castle Peak, about 40 miles from Mt Rose, late Tuesday morning when they were hit by a slide and a huge storm dumping heavy snow.

Six skiers had been rescued ‘with varying injuries’ Tuesday evening, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said, though mountain rescue teams battling treacherous conditions were still trying to find the others as daylight faded.

Blackbird Mountain Guides said it is ‘working in full coordination’ with authorities to support the rescue mission, but local skiers have hit back, claiming that the firm made a ‘bad call’ and should have never let the group up the mountain in the first place.

‘I was at Frog Lake from Thursday to Sunday but we got out before the storm moved in,’ one skier told the Post. ‘Absolutely a preventable tragedy is all I will say about it.’

Another skier accused the ski guides of making a ‘bad call’ and questioned why they ever took the group up the mountains in such poor conditions.

‘Praying for all but questions about how “guides” took them out in these conditions. Really? Did they not read the warnings?’ one added.

Another said: ‘What in God’s name were they doing up there today of all days! Hope they survive and learn a really important lesson.’

Crews pushed through mountainous wilderness near Lake Tahoe during a snowstorm on Tuesday to rescue six skiers who survived the avalanche but were trapped by its snow and ice. Two of the rescued skiers were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Nine others from their tour group remained missing.

Blackbird Mountain Guides revealed that skiers had been in the process of returning to the trailhead at the end of a three-day trip when the avalanche struck.

Some were forced to seek safety in a makeshift shelter erected with a tarp as rescuers battled blizzard conditions to reach them, the Post reported.

The group of backcountry skiers had been staying at the Frog Lake Backcountry Huts, a collection of remote cabins near the Castle Peak.

Authorities previously said 16 people – four guides and 12 clients – were on the trip, before revising that number down to 15.

Blackbird Mountain Guides said in a statement on its website that it was coordinating with authorities on the rescue operation.

‘The leadership team at Blackbird Mountain Guides is working in full coordination with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada County Search and Rescue to support the ongoing rescue operation,’ the statement said.

‘Blackbird Mountain Guides is in direct contact with the emergency contacts of the affected clients and guides and is providing them with regular updates as verified information becomes available.’

Search and rescue crews were dispatched to Frog Lake in the Castle Peak area, northwest of Lake Tahoe, after a 911 call reporting an avalanche and people buried. A powerful winter storm was moving through California at the time.

Extreme conditions in the Northern California mountains slowed the rescue effort. It took crews several hours to reach the skiers and take them to safety, where they were evaluated by the Truckee Fire Department.

The skiers were on the last day of a three-day backcountry skiing trek and had spent two nights at huts on a trip that required navigating ‘rugged mountainous terrain’ for up to 4 miles while bringing along all food and supplies.

Nevada County Sheriff Capt. Russell Greene said authorities were notified about the avalanche by Blackbird Mountain Guides, and by emergency beacons the skiers were carrying.

Forty-six emergency first responders were involved in the search, including ‘highly skilled rescue ski teams’ from both Boreal Mountain Ski Resort and Tahoe Donner’s Alder Creek Adventure Center, who were dispatched to rescue the six known survivors.

The powerful storm continued to pummel the Sierra Nevada mountain range throughout the day, with forecasters warning of white-out conditions.

The Sierra Avalanche Center, based in Truckee, issued an avalanche warning for the area in the Central Sierra Nevada, including the Greater Lake Tahoe region, starting at 5am Tuesday with large slides expected into Wednesday

‘HIGH avalanche danger exists in the backcountry. Large avalanches are expected to occur Tuesday, Tuesday night, and into at least early Wednesday morning across backcountry terrain,’ the Sierra Avalanche Center said.

‘HIGH avalanche danger might continue through the day on Wednesday.’

The town of Soda Springs, near where the avalanche took place, recorded at least 30 inches of snow in a 24-hour period, according to the Soda Springs Mountain Resort.

The dangerous conditions were caused by rapidly accumulating snow piling on fragile snowpack layers coupled with gale-force winds.

The storm wreaked havoc on roads from the Sierra Nevada to Sonoma County. Traffic was halted temporarily in both directions on I-80 over and around Donner Summit due to spinouts and crashes, the authorities reported.

Several Tahoe ski resorts were fully or partially closed due to the weather. Resorts along highways have avalanche mitigation programs and were not expected to be at as high of a risk as the backcountry, where travel in, near or below avalanche terrain was strongly discouraged, the center said.

‘It’s particularly dangerous in the backcountry right now just because we’re at the height of the storm,’ said Brandon Schwartz, Tahoe National Forest lead avalanche forecaster at the Sierra Avalanche Center.

The National Weather Service said parts of the Sierra above 3,500 feet could see up to eight feet of snow over the next 48 hours, with gusts of wind as strong as 55 miles per hour.

Sheriff’s office Captain Russell Green told local media station KCRA that officials discourage people from backcountry skiing.

‘People go out and use the backcountry at all times,’ Green said. ‘We advise against it, obviously, but I wouldn’t say that it’s uncommon. Not that it was a wise choice.’

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has tallied six US avalanche fatalities so far this season, including one in Castle Peak in January.
