MUMBAI: Former India and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has undergone a scan to assess the severity of a suspected hamstring injury, TOI has learnt. His availability for MI’s next match against Punjab Kings on Thursday in Mumbai will depend on the results.“Yes, Rohit underwent an MRI on Monday morning (at the HL Reliance Hospital) to determine the extent of his hamstring injury. If the results don’t look good, he may even miss a couple of matches. The scan results will come by today evening,” a source close to the developments told TOI.

The 38-year-old retired hurt during MI’s 18-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. He walked off in the sixth over after scoring 19 off 13 balls, including two fours and a six. Before retiring hurt, Rohit was attended by the MI physio before the first ball of that over. After a brief stoppage for treatment, he returned to face the next delivery, blocked it, and then left the field.Rohit has had hamstring concerns in the past. “I’m not entirely sure yet – perhaps it’s a bit of a hamstring issue – but I can’t say for certain. I was in the dugout, so I don’t have much information on it,” teammate Sherfane Rutherford said after the match.Rohit, who recently completed 15 years with MI, has scored 137 runs in four matches, including a half-century. His presence will be crucial for the side, who have lost three of their first four games.

MUMBAI: Royals Challengers Bengaluru’s 18-run win over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night tasted a tad bit more sweeter for Krunal Pandya. Enjoying a special outing against his former franchise, the all-rounder, who unveiled his new hairstyle – Jamaican braids which fans said was perhaps inspired by England pacer Jofra Archer – enjoyed getting the better of his brother Hardik Pandya. Revelling in a moment which will perhaps give him the bragging rights at home for a few days, Krunal quipped that it was always going to be a case of “one Pandya had to win.”

Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!In a high-scoring match, RCB posted a massive total of 240 for four, before restricting MI to 222 for four. On a flat surface which had nothing it for the bowlers, Krunal delivered a tight spell of one for 26 in four overs, taking the crucial wicket of India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, who was looking dangerous while batting on 33 before he swept the left-arm spinner to deep backward square leg. Krunal thus helped RCB derail MI’s inning in the middle overs, which proved to be decisive in the end. At a venue he is well-versed with, Krunal once again showed why he is a valuable asset for RCB.“Wankhede has always been close to my heart. I have played here for six years and was lucky enough to win three trophies in that time,” Krunal said at the post-match press conference.“So it has always been special coming over here, and as I said last year as well, eventually the points were coming home only. One Pandya had to win, and I guess I was the lucky one in that,” he added.Since moving to RCB from Lucknow Super Giants in 2025, Krunal has become a reliable figure in their setup. He played an important role in their title-winning campaign last season, taking 17 wickets in 15 matches@22.29 and contributing 109 runs@18.16 with the bat lower down the order. That run included a brilliant, match-turning effort of two for 17 in four overs in the final against Punjab Kings. Named as the ‘Player of the Match’ Krunal took the wickets of Prabhsmiran Singh and Josh Inglis to turn the tide in RCB’s favour, Punjab Kings fell six runs short while chasing 191. In IPL 2026 so far, Krunal has taken five wickets@23.60, at an economy rate of 9.07 in four matches@ for the defending champions. Pandya’s spells have helped RCB gain control and win the battle of the middle overs. More than the numbers, it is his ability to step up in the big moments that stands out. The 35-year-old Baroda captain is the only cricketer to win the Player of the Match award in an IPL final twice.‘Don’t pre-plan bowling bouncers but want to be one step ahead of batters’One ‘surprise weapon’ which Krunal has successfully used against the batters is the bouncer – not a delivery usually associated with the spinners. Krunal said that he uses the delivery as per his gut feeling and to be one step ahead of the batters.“I have never shied away from trying different and new things because with the Impact Player rule, previously, you had No. 6 or 7 as all-rounders and batsmanship was quite different. But now there are pure batters (coming in) at No. 8 and plus the skill sets, young boys like Mukul (Choudhary) and Vaibhav (Sooryavanshi) are hitting from ball one consistently. As a bowler, I want to be one step ahead with the skillset and mental part as well.“I am glad that it is coming out well and hope that in this format, there are finger spinners who survive and who can take something out of it and do well. Because for (a) finger spinner with having flat tracks and eight batters, it has become very difficult,” Krunal added.Often left surprised with a spinner bowling the short quick ball, batters tend to leave the delivery alone. Krunal said that his bouncers are pre-planned, but instinctive. “I am someone who follows my gut. I don’t pre-plan that I want to bowl the fourth or fifth or sixth ball (as a) bouncer. There are days where I will bowl two bouncers back to back and suddenly I will bowl the first ball and the sixth ball,” he said.“But yeah, it is more sort of gut feeling when to bowl which ball and I just commit 100 per cent to that. People tend to speak a lot about my bouncers and the balls which looks quite different and funny…but I have always worked on the basics of my bowling and if you see I am tall and I have been able to get that bounce, I have (also) been able to get batsmen out with spin and deceiving in the flight. I don’t practise bowling bouncers much. It is just that I actually bowl in the game,” he explained. ‘Kohli should be fine’ Meanwhile, Krunal said that Virat Kohli should be “fine” after the batting superstar did not take field in the second half of the game owing to an ankle niggle. “I have not spoken to the physio yet but I think he will be fine. I guess (there is) nothing to worry,” Krunal said.

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya cut a dejected figure after his side suffered a third consecutive defeat in IPL 2026, going down to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.MI, chasing a massive 241-run target, were always under pressure after RCB posted a huge 240/4, powered by half-centuries from Phil Salt, Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar. Despite a strong start from Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, Mumbai never truly took control of the chase and eventually finished on 222/5, with Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 71 being the lone standout effort. In the dressing room after the match, Hardik addressed the squad alongside head coach Mahela Jayawardene and urged the players to respond collectively to the setback rather than isolate themselves. He said, “Thinking from what MJ said, I think here there are two options we can do. One is go back in our rooms, go back into our cocoon spaces and try to figure it out. I know it’s tough losing but let’s learn… let’s not get disappeared. But let’s learn. It’s always winning and learning, never losing. So let’s do that. That’s something which tonight after the game, once we go back to hotel, let’s have a meal together, we’ll talk about cricket. We’ll talk about something else but we’ll figure it out,” Hardik said in the dressing room.Reflecting on the defeat, Hardik admitted that MI have struggled to control games in recent outings, often finding themselves chasing matches rather than dictating terms. After the match, he said, “I think we conceded way too many runs. I think that (241-run target) was always going to be catch-up. I think in the last couple of games, as a bowling unit or even as a batting unit, we’ve been quite catching up in the game rather than leading the game. We really need to reflect, really need to see what best we can do and how we can get that momentum and that click which we require. We have a couple of days off from here and we will play again. (bat second the way to go here?) To be very honest, now a lot of things needs to be rethink. Definitely, it’s not working. Couple of games we have won the toss, but maybe we need to see what other options we have as a batting group or bowling group. Looking at the kind of wicket it’s playing, if we can bat as well, that would be good. We still need to play cricket, we still need to bat well, we still need to bowl well,” Hardik said. With MI slipping to a third straight defeat, the skipper stressed the need for introspection and possible tactical changes as the franchise looks to halt its slide in the tournament.

NEW DELHI: Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Tim David left the umpire slightly annoyed with a playful act during their IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. The incident unfolded in the 18th over of the RCB innings when David smashed a towering six off Hardik Pandya over deep mid-wicket. The strike was so powerful that it altered the shape of the ball, which had also become wet, forcing the umpires to call for a replacement. As the box of used balls was brought out, David picked one up and began casually playing with it. Despite repeated requests from the umpire to hand it back, the Australian continued to toy with the ball for a few moments, leaving the official visibly miffed. After a brief delay, David finally returned the ball, bringing a smile back to the situation.Rohit Sharma also joined in, sharing a light-hearted moment with David as the incident drew laughter on the field.Earlier, RCB’s top order had dominated proceedings. Skipper Rajat Patidar, along with Phil Salt and Virat Kohli, struck impressive half-centuries to power the defending champions to a massive 240/4 — the second-highest total of the season.Salt led the charge with a blistering 78 off 36 balls, hitting six fours and six sixes, while Kohli anchored the innings with a composed 50 off 38 deliveries. The pair added a fluent 120 runs for the opening wicket before Shardul Thakur provided the breakthrough.Patidar then carried forward the momentum with a rapid 53 off just 20 balls, laced with four boundaries and five sixes, as RCB stamped their authority with a commanding batting display. In reply, Mumbai Indians could manage 222/5. RCB won the match by 18 runs

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli looked in ominous touch at the Wankhede Stadium, anchoring Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s batting effort with composure and control. He rotated strike smartly and allowed Phil Salt – who was in destructive form – to dominate the bowling. Salt’s blistering knock, along with half-centuries from skipper Rajat Patidar and Kohli, and a late flourish from Tim David, powered RCB to a daunting 240/4 against Mumbai Indians.Salt smashed 78 off 36 balls, sharing a 120-run opening stand with Kohli, who made 50 off 38 deliveries. Patidar then kept the momentum going with a 20-ball 53, adding 65 runs with Kohli, before David’s unbeaten 34 off 16 balls provided the finishing touches.

.

In response, Mumbai Indians managed 222/5, falling short despite a promising start. RCB spinner Suyash Sharma delivered the decisive blow with a double strike in the eighth over, halting the chase at a crucial stage. However, one of the most talked-about moments came after Kohli’s dismissal. Having reached his second fifty of the season, Kohli was removed by Hardik Pandya. As he walked back to the pavilion, the usually composed batter was visibly furious. In a moment that quickly went viral, Kohli vented his frustration by throwing his helmet and gloves, reflecting his hunger for a bigger score despite a solid contribution.RCB, the defending champions, have played four matches so far this season, winning three and losing one. With this win, RCB climbed to third on the points table and will next face Lucknow Super Giants on April 15.

‘We lost momentum’ – Mahela on MI’s defeat and key mistakes

“We’re going to bowl first. Looks like a good track. We played the first game on the other pitch, this looks similar. It’s always good to bat second here. I think it’s a big game. Just want to come out and play our best cricket, do the things we’ve spoken about in the meetings, and just enjoy the sport. We requested good wickets and we’ve been getting them. As long as you land the ball right as a bowler and play the right shots as a batter, you’re in the game,” Pandya said during the toss. “Over the years at Wankhede, chasing has worked for a lot of teams. Being our home ground, dew comes in later as well. So it’s good to know what you’re chasing, you can plan your innings accordingly. Mayank Markande and Mitchell Santner come in for Chahar and Ghazanfar,” he said. RCB made one change to their Playing XI. They included Jacob Duffy in place of Josh Hazlewood. “Obviously would have bowled first. But as you all know, it’s a good batting track. The ball comes nicely onto the bat with good bounce. So honestly, it won’t make too much difference. We’ll try to put a good total on the board and keep them under pressure. This is our fourth game. The way we’ve played the last few matches, there are a lot of positives,” RCB captain Rajat Patidar said.“In the last match, we were 97 for 6 and still managed to score over 200. That’s a positive sign for us. We enjoy it a lot here. Whenever we come, we see great crowds. It’s challenging, but at the same time, fun and exciting. Just one change, Duffy comes in place of Hazlewood,” he said.

Why were RCB and MI players wearing black armbands?

Both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect following the passing of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who died at the age of 92 on Sunday. Players also observed a moment of silence in her memory before the start of the match.Coming into the fixture, both sides were looking to bounce back after setbacks against Rajasthan Royals, where they were outplayed by 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.Mumbai Indians were aiming to arrest a two-match losing streak, while defending champions RCB were keen to return to winning ways after being outclassed in their previous outing.Historically, in IPL clashes between the two sides, Virat Kohli has enjoyed the upper hand. The RCB star has scored 922 runs in 34 matches (33 innings) against Mumbai Indians at an average of 31.79 and a strike rate of 128.77, including six half-centuries.Rohit Sharma, who has also faced Kohli during his stint with the Deccan Chargers, has represented Mumbai Indians in 26 matches against RCB, scoring 629 runs in 25 innings at an average of 27.34 and a strike rate of over 142, with four fifties and a highest score of 94.

Mumbai Indians (MI) and defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will face off tonight, April 12, 2026, at the Wankhede Stadium for Match 20 of the IPL. A high-voltage IPL clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Wankhede is set to be headlined by the iconic rivalry between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Former India left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan believes RCB may have momentum on their side heading into their IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians, but the latter edge ahead in terms of overall personnel. Both teams are coming off defeats to Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, raising questions ahead of this high-stakes encounter. Pathan pointed out that while RCB started strongly at home, their form dipped once they hit the road.“RCB are travelling now. When they played their first two games at home, they won comfortably, but the moment they went on the road, they lost in Guwahati against Rajasthan Royals, so, there will be a few questions in the camp. I feel the game might be decided by which team bowls better in the end overs, and the toss will be an important factor too. RCB have the form, but in a man-to-man comparison, I feel Mumbai are slightly ahead,” Pathan said on JioHotstar, as the league enters its ‘Rivalry Week’.

Death overs and toss could be decisive

Pathan emphasised that execution in the final overs could ultimately determine the outcome, especially in conditions where chasing teams often hold an advantage. While RCB’s recent performances give them confidence, he believes MI’s squad depth provides a slight advantage in a direct comparison. When Mumbai Indians set off for back-to-back away fixtures 10 days ago, there was a sense of renewed optimism. The long-standing jinx of opening-game defeats had finally been broken, and the early signs hinted at momentum.

But as it returns to familiar surroundings for Sunday night’s marquee Indian Premier League clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the mood is likely more subdued than buoyant.
