Manchester United’s £60m star needs to prove he has a future at the club

Manchester United are approaching the Premier League run-in and Mason Mount has more to prove than most of his teammates.

“Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies,” Mason Mount said after agreeing to join Manchester United in 2023. The attacking midfielder was a gamble when Erik ten Hag signed off the £55m transfer.

He ended the 2022/23 season dealing with a pelvic injury and after scoring just three goals in his final campaign at Stamford Bridge, Mount needed to hit the ground running at the Theatre of Dreams. Unfortunately for him, he failed to do so.

The former Chelsea man picked up an injury after just two Premier League appearances and did not score his first goal in the top-flight until March 2024. Since then, his United career has been plagued by injuries as he’s struggled to gain any momentum.

That was until this season. Mount became a Ruben Amorim favourite. The Portuguese head coach’s two No.10s system was perfect for the attacking midfielder and between October and December he scored three goals in seven Premier League appearances.

“He can defend, he can attack, the quality when he touches the ball is really good, so it’s not a surprise for me,” Amorim said after Mount’s third goal of his purple patch. “He’s a different type of leader. It’s not like Licha [Lisandro Martinez], for example. It’s a guy that leads by the example.

“It doesn’t matter the situation, Mason Mount is always the same thing – training, talking, dealing with people around Carrington. That is not easy, so he’s a very, very good player.”

Things had been looking good for Mount individually but collectively United were struggling. By January, Amorim had been sacked after his extraordinary outburst following the draw at Leeds.

Mount missed that game due to a knock but returned for a half hour cameo at Burnley under Darren Fletcher. That was the last time the midfielder played meaningful minutes for the Reds.

Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim head coach saw United return to a 4-2-3-1 and Bruno Fernandes was pushed into the No.10 role. Mount soon discovered, like Kobbie Mainoo before him, that Fernandes is undroppable.

The midfielder has been fit for just four games of the Carrick era. In two of them he was an unused substitute. In the others he was brought on in the final minutes.

United are in the midst of a 24-day break thanks to a lack of European or domestic cup football. They will spend some of this week in Ireland at a training camp but once they return, Mount needs to prove there is a place for him at United.

In Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad, Benjamin Sesko and, of course, Fernandes, United have a wealth of attacking options at their disposal. Three of those can also play Mount’s preferred position, leaving him well down the pecking order.

Fernandes will consider his options after the World Cup but it is understood United want to commit him to a new deal. If he agrees to stay long-term, Mount will definitely be a back-up next season at best.

Between now and the end of the campaign, Mount has to prove his fitness and his quality to the Reds. If he doesn’t, United will need to consider his future.

Mbeumo, Martinez, Mount – Latest Man United injury news and return dates

Manchester United were handed a new injury worry in their Premier League win over beat Aston Villa this past weekend

Manchester United got back to winning ways on Sunday afternoon as they beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford. Goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko sealed the victory, with Bruno Fernandes also putting in another superb performance.

Michael Carrick’s are now three points clear of Villa in the race for Champions League football next season. Chelsea and Liverpool also failing to win meant it was a great weekend for United as they now sit six and five points above their two rivals, respectively

There was some good news for Carrick and Co. even before the action kicked off with Mason Mount back in the matchday squad. He remained an unused substitute on his return to the fold after six weeks out due to injury.

Three key players remain unavailable however, with a possible fresh injury concern spotted late into the win against Villa. With all of that being said, the Manchester Evening News has rounded up the latest updates on United’s injured stars and when they could all return.

Bryan Mbeumo

In the 75th minute, Mbeumo was replaced by Sesko with Gary Neville suggesting he may have been injured as the Sky Sports co-commentator questioned if he was limping while he made his way off. He also noticed him look at a United teammate “as if he might be carrying something.”

Carrick was not asked about a potential Mbeumo injury after the game. Having struggled to have an impact, it seems more likely he was disappointed with his performance.

Possible return date: Bournemouth (A) – March 20

Lisandro Martinez

Martinez has missed United’s last four games through injury. It looked to be a minor issue for the Argentine but he suffered a setback in training recently, as per The Daily Mail, that delayed his return.

What Carrick has said (March 3): “He’s not quite ready for that. We’ve got one or two we’re trying to work to get them back.”

Possible return date: Leeds United (H) – April 13

Mason Mount

Mount was named on United’s bench for the visit of Villa following a positive update from Carrick earlier this week.

What Carrick has said: “Mason is back with the group, which is fantastic. He’s not 100 per cent, because he’s only trained with us a small amount of time, but he’s back, and that’s good for us. So, we’ll see if he’s involved or not.”

Possible return date: Returned

Matthijs de Ligt

It has nearly been four months out of action for Matthijs de Ligt due to a back issue. United have been managing the problem carefully and thus it seems likely he will return after the upcoming international break and FA Cup quarter-final weekend.

What Carrick has said (Feb 28): “Matthijs, he’s had a back issue, which has been a little bit slower to progress, really. It’s something we’ve been working through, and he’s getting there.

He’s in the right direction, but as I said, he’s just a little bit further behind. It’s a difficult one to pin down, especially time-wise. He’s definitely improving, so that’s a good thing

Possible return date: Leeds United (H) – April 13

Patrick Dorgu

Dorgu has missed the last month-and-a-half with a hamstring injury suffered in the win over Arsenal. He is another expected to be back for the game against Leeds United in mid-April, however.

What Carrick has said (Jan 30): “Pat, unfortunately, he’s going to be out for a period of time. We’re still working through how long that’s going to be. We weren’t sure whether it was a little bit of cramp or whether it was something a little bit more serious, and at the moment, it looks a little bit more on the serious note.”

Possible return date: Leeds United (H) – April 13

Man United injury latest and possible return dates ahead of Aston Villa

Manchester United return to action on Sunday after an 11-day break without any games when they take on Aston Villa in the Premier League

Manchester United will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat under the guidance of Michael Carrick in their last outing when they are back in Premier League action this weekend. They have a chance to give their hopes of Champions League qualification a big boost.

Third-placed United host fourth-placed Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon (2pm kick-off). The match comes 11 days after a 2-1 loss against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

While United have had a bit longer to prepare for the game, Villa were in action on Thursday night, recording a 1-0 away win over Lille in the first leg of their Europa League tie.

The extra time will come as a boost to United, with players nursing and overcoming knocks having a longer chance to recover and be available for selection.

Ahead of the game, Carrick has given the latest update on his squad, with two boosts, although there are still some players remaining on the sidelines. With that in mind, here is the latest from the Carrington treatment room.

Mason Mount

Injury: Knock.

The midfielder has been out since early in Carrick’s reign.

What Carrick has said: “Mason is back with the group, which is fantastic. He’s an important player for us, Mason, and to have him back and involved is a good step for us.

“He is not 100 per cent in terms of back, because he’s only trained a very small amount of time, but he’s back and that’s good for us so we’ll see whether he’s involved or not on Sunday, but it’s a big step for him, so we’re happy with that. That’s it in terms of players coming back for now.”

Possible return date: vs Aston Villa (H) – Sunday, March 15.

What Carrick has said: “That’s it in terms of players coming back for now.”

What Carrick has said: “That’s it in terms of players coming back for now.”

The back injury has caused De Ligt to miss the last three-and-a-half months of action.

What Carrick has said: “Matthijs, he’s had a back issue, which has been a little bit slower to progress, really. It’s something we’ve been working through, and he’s getting there. He’s in the right direction, but as I said, he’s just a little bit further behind. It’s a difficult one to pin down, especially time-wise. He’s definitely improving, so that’s a good thing.” (Feb 27)

Mazraoui, Shaw, De Ligt – Latest Man United injury news and return dates

Manchester United will now enjoy a 10-day break before their next Premier League game against Aston Villa following Wednesday’s defeat to Newcastle United

Manchester United suffered their first defeat under Michael Carrick on Wednesday night as Newcastle United beat them 2-1 at St James’ Park. William Osula’s injury-time winner handed Eddie Howe’s 10-men all three points after Jacob Ramsey was sent off.

The defeat leaves the race for Champions League football wide open with Chelsea picking up an emphatic 4-1 victory at Aston Villa. Fortunately for Michael Carrick’s men, they will get over a week to recover and prepare for their next league clash against Villa.

It comes at the perfect time for United, with a number of players suffering with injuries. At Newcastle, Noussair Mazraoui was forced off and replaced by Tyrell Malacia late on. Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Lisandro Martinez all missed the defeat.

With all of that being said, the Manchester Evening News has taken a look at the latest updates on United’s injured stars and when they could return.

Noussair Mazraoui

Since returning from AFCON, Mazraoui came off the bench in three straight games before starting the previous two. After playing 66 minutes against Palace, he lasted 85 minutes at Newcastle.

However, as the United players left the stadium late on Wednesday night, the Moroccan international was spotted walking with a small limp and looking uncomfortable.

Possible return date: Aston Villa (H) –Sunday, March 15.

Luke Shaw

Shaw came off in the first half against Crystal Palace last weekend with what appeared to be a foot issue. He started the Newcastle defeat, but was replaced on the hour by Manuel Ugarte.

Possible return date: Returned

Lisandro Martinez

Martinez has been absent for United’s last three games with a calf issue. He wasn’t in the squad at Newcastle, with Under-21s defender Godwill Kukonki named on the bench as defensive cover.

What Carrick has said: “Licha, it was a small issue, so he’s getting closer. He won’t be out for very long so we’ll just monitor him over the next day, two, three or four days and see when he can come back, but he’s he’s not far away.”

Possible return date: Aston Villa (H) – Sunday, March 15.

Mason Mount

Mount has not played for United since Carrick’s first game in charge against Manchester City. He was in the squad in the 3-2 win over Arsenal, but was left on the bench.

There is hope that he could return for the game against Aston Villa next weekend.

What Carrick has said: “Mason is getting closer, really. He’s on the grass, and he’s getting closer. He’s looking to train and be in around it pretty soon. He’s just had to be patient… He’s a big player, so we’re looking after him, making sure he’s ready for a big finish to the season.”

Possible return date: Aston Villa (H) – Sunday, March 15.

Matthijs de Ligt

De Ligt has been out with a back injury for the last three months. However, the latest update on the defender suggests that he is getting closer to a return.

What Carrick has said: “Matthijs, he’s had a back issue, which has been a little bit slower to progress, really. It’s something we’ve been working through, and he’s getting there.

“He’s in the right direction, but as I said, he’s just a little bit further behind. It’s a difficult one to pin down, especially time-wise. He’s definitely improving, so that’s a good thing.”

Possible return date: Leeds United (H) – April 13

Patrick Dorgu

Dorgu suffered a hamstring injury in the 3-2 win over Arsenal and Carrick confirmed he would miss a considerable period back in late January.

What Carrick has said: “Pat, unfortunately, he’s going to be out for a period of time. We’re still working through how long that’s going to be. We weren’t sure whether it was a little bit of cramp or whether it was something a little bit more serious, and at the moment, it looks a little bit more on the serious note.”

Possible return date: Late March

Man United injury latest and possible return dates as update given

Manchester United host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday, with Michael Carrick hoping to welcome one player to his matchday squad

Manchester United will be looking to make it six wins from seven games under the guidance of interim head coach Michael Carrick when they host Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. United are back in action on Sunday afternoon (2pm).

The match comes just six days after they got back to winning ways with a 1-0 away victory over Everton. Benjamin Sesko’s 71st-minute goal was enough to separate the two sides. That result saw United open up a three-point gap to both Chelsea and Liverpool in fifth and sixth place.

The injury situation at Old Trafford is also looking better compared to the start of the season. With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest news from the treatment room at Carrington.

Patrick Dorgu

Injury: Hamstring

The full-back has been unavailable for the last four Premier League games due to a hamstring injury suffered in the win over Arsenal last month. But there is hope that he could be back soon, with Denmark head coach Brian Riemer saying that there is a chance that he could be back for next month’s World Cup play-offs.

Possible return date: Vs Leeds United (H), April 11.

Matthijs de Ligt

Injury: Back

The defender has been out of action since the end of November with a back injury, with him missing the last 15 games in all competitions.

What Carrick has said: “Matthijs, he’s had a back issue, which has been a little bit slower to progress, really. It’s something we’ve been working through, and he’s getting there. He’s in the right direction, but, as I said, he’s just a little bit further behind.

“It’s one of those things that’s disappointing, but it’s just a part of football, unfortunately, so we’ll get him back when we can.

“It’s just the nature of the injury and the issue in the back. It’s a difficult one to pin down, especially time-wise. He’s definitely improving, so that’s a good thing, and we’re just working towards that really. There’s not much more I can give at this stage.”

Possible return date: Unknown

Mason Mount

Injury: Knock

The midfielder has missed the last four Premier League games with a knock but is closing in on a return to action.

What Carrick has said: “Mason is getting closer, really. He’s on the grass and he’s getting closer, he’s looking to train and be in around it pretty soon.

“He’s getting close. He’s just had to be patient really and he’s a big player, so we’re looking after him, making sure he’s ready for a big finish to the season.”

Possible return date: Vs Aston Villa (H), March 15.

Lisandro Martinez

Injury: Knock

The centre-back was not included in the squad for Monday night’s Premier League win over Everton, having previously started the last nine league games. It’s reported that the issue is only minor and he could make a quick return.

What Carrick has said: “Unfortunately, he just picked up something during the week. It doesn’t seem too bad at all, but we’re just kind of working through that at the moment, so he’s not available tonight.”

Possible return date: Vs Crystal Palace (H), March 1.

Man United’s forgotten £55m man has a point to prove to Michael Carrick

Mason Mount could return for Man Utd this weekend but he has hardly had a look-in under Michael Carrick and it’s hard to see how he gets into the team this season.

When Manchester United won at Crystal Palace earlier this season, it was Mason Mount who was the match-winner. The midfielder scored the second goal to ease the pressure on Ruben Amorim and continue his own resurgence.

Mount scored again at Wolves a couple of weeks later to take his tally to three in seven games and he was enjoying his best moment since his £55million move from Chelsea in 2023.

But when Palace visit Old Trafford for the return fixture this weekend, Mount will be something of a forgotten man. Michael Carrick will provide an update on his fitness in his press conference today and the 27-year-old could return to the squad after four games out injured.

Try MEN Premium NOW for just £1

If he is fit, the best he can hope for is a role on the bench and perhaps a late cameo. He has played just one minute for Carrick so far, as a late substitute in his first game in charge, when he actually scored only for VAR to disallow it, and the change of system since Amorim was sacked has been bad news for Mount.

With Amorim in charge, Bruno Fernandes was playing in a deeper and with two No.10s, there was room for Mount, who started 10 Premier League games before the Portuguese was dismissed. Now there is only one attacking midfielder in Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 system and that position belongs to Fernandes once again.

Mount could play off the left with Patrick Dorgu injured, although Matheus Cunha has that position at the moment, and he could play alongside Casemiro, a position currently nailed down by Kobbie Mainoo. Mount’s best hope is minutes off the bench.

His biggest issue at Old Trafford has been his fitness. He has now had three separate injury absences this season, taking the total to seven since he signed for United. He has missed 55 games in total due to injuries.

FOLLOW OUR MAN UNITED FACEBOOK PAGE! Latest news and analysis via the MEN’s Manchester United Facebook page

Before United’s win against Fulham, which happened to be the first game he missed with his latest injury issue, Carrick was asked about Mount and a potential role for him this season.

“I’m a big fan of Mason,” he said. “I think he’s got so many good things to like about him. His quality to start with, his attitude, his personality.

“That’s why we’ve got the squad. Certain times, certain games, certain players will play and as we work through the season, that will come into fruition. Again, I like Mason a lot and I think he’s an important player for this team and this club.”

Most coaches are drawn to Mount, but finding a position for him in this team right now looks difficult. While Mainoo is making a late run for inclusion in England’s World Cup squad, Mount’s chances of reuniting with Thomas Tuchel look to be over.

If he does get a chance in the coming weeks, with United’s fixture list sparse, he will need to make sure he takes it.

Manchester United are about to receive an injury boost – but there is a catch

Man Utd are set to play Everton in the Premier League on Monday and Mason Mount could return to the squad.

After Ruben Amorim’s sacking, Mason Mount was seen as the biggest ‘loser’ in Manchester United’s dressing room. Amorim did not hide his affection for Mount, saying that he “loved” the midfielder’s determination.

United were statistically a better team when Mount started in the first half of the campaign, which backed up the eye test. The 27-year-old scored goals against Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Wolves to finally build genuine momentum for the first time since his move to Manchester.

Unfortunately for Mount, he’s been unable to impress Michael Carrick as he did Amorim because he picked up a knock in training just as Carrick was getting his feet under the table at Carrington.

FOLLOW OUR MAN UNITED FACEBOOK PAGE! Latest news and analysis via the MEN’s Manchester United Facebook page

Mount made a small cameo with an offside goal to his name in the Manchester derby victory, and was an unused substitute at the Emirates Stadium. He then picked up the training injury during the team’s preparation to face Fulham.

Earlier in the month, Carrick suggested Mount should be back in the squad to face Everton, but he did confirm the midfielder would return at the Hill Dickinson Stadium when he spoke on Friday.

Speaking at Carrington, Carrick explained: “Mason is getting closer, we have been patient with him. We don’t want to push anything. We want him back and fit. He is getting closer, which is good for us.”

Carrick did not outright commit to Mount returning to the squad in Merseyside, but it appears he has a strong chance of being available for selection again for the first time since Arsenal.

Mount will go from facing the challenge of regaining fitness to regaining a starting role, though. The change of formation poses questions about where he best fits into Carrick’s system.

The Portsmouth-born lad was perfectly suited to playing in one of the No.10 roles in Amoirm’s system, and perhaps his ideal position in Carrick’s shape would be the central attacking midfield role.

Bruno Fernandes has that position nailed down. You only need to look at Kobbie Mainoo, who was pitted against Fernandes by Amorim, meaning he did not make a start in the Premier League this season until Carrick was appointed, to see that Mount would face an impossible task to usurp the United captain.

The silver lining is that Mount is adaptable and versatile. He could play on either of the flanks or down the middle, where Bryan Mbeumo has played, so it’s certainly not all doom and gloom.

And Mount can take comfort from the fact that his position in the United squad looked weaker last summer when Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were signed. He still found a way to force his way into the team and become a key player, which shows he’s got the mettle to rise to another challenge.

Mbeumo and Cunha were signed to be the first choice in the No.10 roles, but Mount backed himself. Speaking in pre-season, he reflected: “Any opportunity you get, you’ve got to try and take it. And, yeah, I mean, I’ll always back myself. I know what I can do. But we’re a team and we’re all working together in that.

“Obviously, with the new signings coming in, they (Cunha and Mbeumo) are going to elevate us to another level, and we all need to be at that level to really perform.”

Mount will need to show the kind of determination that endeared him to Amorim in the second half of the campaign. He has missed some time to impress Carrick, who could land the job permanently in the summer, but he’s got form for bouncing back from setbacks and proving people wrong.

Dorgu, Mount, De Ligt – Man United injuries and return dates after Spurs win

Manchester United secured a comfortable 2-0 win over a 10-man Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s early kick-off as Michael Carrick made it four victories from four games

Manchester United secured a comfortable fourth consecutive win under Michael Carrick during Saturday’s early kick-off at Old Trafford. The Reds ran out 2-0 winners over Thomas Frank’s struggling Tottenham Hotspur after 90 minutes, their path to victory slightly eased as a result of Cristian Romero’s red card in the 29th minute.

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes ultimately sealed the deal for United, who climbed to fourth in the Premier League standings through the fruits of their labour. Carrick was not afforded the chance to field a full-strength squad against Spurs as a result of a number of respective injuries to key players.

Thankfully, no further injuries are thought to have occurred during Saturday’s match, with Carrick making all five of his available substitutions through choice, rather than through need. Here, the MEN breaks down all of the latest injury news surrounding Manchester United, as well as player return dates…

FOLLOW OUR MAN UNITED FB PAGE! Latest news and analysis via the MEN’s Manchester United Facebook page

Patrick Dorgu

Patrick Dorgu sustained a thigh injury during United’s 3-2 upset over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium at the end of January – a game in which he scored a vital goal. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match with Spurs, Carrick delivered an update on the 21-year-old, citing how he will be back “stronger than ever” when he is ready to return.

The interim head coach said: “We’re working through it. It’ll definitely be a number of weeks. It will be a considerable period of time.

“He’s not going to be back in the next two or three weeks. To be more exact is a little bit difficult, at this moment. It could possibly be [10 weeks], we’re working through it.

“Certainly, we’re looking forward to getting him back as quickly as we can and getting on the pitch long before the end of the season.”

Potential return date: Late February to March

Mason Mount

As a result of picking up a knock in training last week, Mason Mount missed out not only on United’s 3-2 win over Fulham last weekend, but also Saturday’s victory over Spurs. However, Carrick is confident that the attacking-midfielder will be back in the not too distant future.

He said: “Mason sooner. He’s not too far away. We’re hopeful it won’t be too long.”

Potential return date: Tuesday, February 10 vs West Ham (A)

Matthijs De Ligt

Matthijs De Ligt has missed the last 13 matches as a result of a back problem, with Carrick confirming that this weekend’s game with Tottenham came as a little too soon.

Speaking on Thursday, Carrick said of the centre-half: “Matta, he’s working his way back, taking good steps and improving. It’s a little bit too soon at the moment but, hopefully, it won’t be too long.

Potential return date: Late February

De Ligt, Mount, Dorgu – Man Utd injury latest and predicted return dates

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United will target fourth successive win when Tottenham head to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime.

Manchester United are expected be without at least three first-team players for Saturday lunchtime’s Premier League showdown against Tottenham. Michael Carrick’s side host Spurs at Old Trafford looking to make it four successive victories after beating Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham.

It’s a run of form that has seen United move up to fourth place in the Premier League table, just five points behind third-placed Aston Villa and six adrift of City in second. But the Reds are aware that failure to beat Spurs could see them drop to as low as sixth position with Chelsea and arch rivals Liverpool close behind them.

With Tottenham winless in six top-flight matches, however, United are going to no doubt be confident of securing yet another important victory. This is despite the Reds still having some players not available.

Here, we take a closer look at the United treatment table;

FOLLOW OUR MANCHESTER UNITED FB PAGE! Latest news and analysis via the MEN’s Manchester United Facebook page

Matthijs de Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt has missed the last 12 matches due to a back problem. He is not expected to be available to face Tottenham, either, with Carrick confirming that it is “a little bit too soon at the moment.”

A return for De Ligt is anticipated at some point in February.

“Matta [De Ligt], he’s working his way back, taking good steps and improving,” Carrick said on Thursday. “It’s a little bit too soon at the moment but, hopefully, it won’t be too long [before De Ligt is back].”

Potential return date: Late February 2026

Mason Mount

Mason Mount missed out against Fulham last time out, due to a knock that he suffered in training. The England international is a major doubt to face Tottenham.

“Probably, Mason [will be available] sooner [than De Ligt],” Carrick said on Thursday. “He’s not too far away really. We’re hopeful it won’t be too long.”

Potential return date: Tuesday, February 10 – West Ham (A)

Patrick Dorgu

Patrick Dorgu had been in inspired form for United before injuring his hamstring injury against Arsenal – and now the Denmark international is facing at least another two months on the side-lines.

“Pat, unfortunately, he’s going to be out for a period of time. We’re still working through how long that’s going to be,” Carrick said last Friday. We’ll have to see, it’s disappointing, he’s had such a big couple of weeks, Pat.
