Marcus Rashford gesture left Aaron Ramsdale with clear opinion of Barcelona star

Marcus Rashford and Aaron Ramsdale are expected to go head-to-head in the Champions League tonight

Newcastle United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has previously discussed the ‘humility’ shown by Marcus Rashford, with the two England internationals poised to face each other once more. The pair will be battling it out when Barcelona travel to St James’ Park for Tuesday night’s Champions League clash.

With Nick Pope sidelined through injury, Ramsdale is anticipated to keep his place between the sticks for the fixture, as both sides attempt to secure an advantage ahead of next week’s second leg at the Nou Camp. He’ll be determined to prevent Rashford from replicating the brace he scored when the two sides met during the league phase of the competition.

Nevertheless, this won’t be the first encounter between the two Englishmen, having faced off numerous times in the Premier League whilst Rashford was at Manchester United. In December 2020, he found the net twice during a 3-2 victory over Sheffield United.

Ahead of the reverse fixture, just a few months afterwards, Ramsdale revealed a gesture from the striker that left a lasting impression on him.

Speaking in early 2021, Ramsdale, who was then with the Blades, told the Yorkshire Post: “With the game against Man United in December, me and Marcus had a conversation at the end and spoke about my family and his and what he is doing for the country.

“To be honest, me and Marcus do not know each other too well, so for him to ask about my mum and dad was a lovely gesture and one you can take something from even though he is an opponent – and he scored two past me. His humility shone through.”

Since then, the pair may have had more opportunities to become acquainted, having both been selected for the European Championships squad the following summer.

The tournament saw England reach the final, only to suffer a penalty shootout defeat to Italy.

Post-tournament, Ramsdale has had stints with Arsenal and Southampton before securing a loan move to Newcastle this summer. Rashford stayed at United until January of last year, when he was loaned out to Aston Villa.

He subsequently secured another loan move to Barcelona in the summer, and it’s anticipated that the Manchester United academy product will make the switch permanent in the upcoming transfer window.

Five Marcus Rashford replacements targets named as transfer U-turn demand issued

Manchester United have enjoyed a break thanks to their early FA Cup exit as Michael Carrick’s side look to bounce back from a loss to Newcastle

Michael Carrick and Manchester United are experiencing an extended break following their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle. United were absent from FA Cup action over the weekend after being knocked out in January by Brighton.

Manager Carrick endured his first loss in the Old Trafford dugout last week when his team travelled to St. James’ Park. A late William Osula strike made it 2-1 and clinched all three points for the hosts.

Up next for Carrick’s side is a fixture against fellow top-four contenders Aston Villa, where Marcus Rashford spent half of last season on loan. The England international is currently excelling for Barcelona.

A £26million purchase option in the 28-year-old’s agreement is anticipated to be activated by the Catalan side and a list of potential replacements United could target has emerged. The Manchester Evening News provides you with the latest developments from Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford replacements ‘shortlisted’

Having moved to Spain last summer on an initial loan arrangement, Rashford has made an impression. He has netted 10 goals and provided 13 assists for Barcelona across all competitions so far this season.

Rashford has flourished under Hansi Flick and the anticipation is that Barcelona will exercise the option to sign him on a permanent basis, whether that be the £26m reported clause or a reduced negotiated figure. Should Rashford depart, then United would probably seek to acquire a replacement. According to reports, there are five names on their shortlist.

United are believed to have RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande and Como 1907’s Jesus Rodriguez on their radar, whilst Strasbourg winger Martial Godo is also being assessed.

Furthermore, United are said to be tracking Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, who offers direct running ability and top-flight experience. Meanwhile, reports suggest Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola is emerging as a prime target.

Casemiro U-turn appeal

One United player who appears almost certain to be departing at the season’s end is Casemiro. The Brazilian midfielder’s contract expires in the summer and the club have already announced they won’t be extending it.

Yet in recent months, the 34-year-old has been producing performances of exceptional quality, prompting United legend Bryan Robson to urge Carrick to reverse the decision to allow his exit.

Robson told BoyleSports: “I would encourage Casemiro to stay. He’s had a really good season this year. He’s a top player. He’s got a great football brain. He’s a really good passer of the ball.

“He heads the ball well and when he goes in to tackle, he means it. You don’t stay at Real Madrid for the amount of years he did and win Champions League titles if you’re not an absolute top player.

“People see what you’re really good at. So I think next season he could definitely give us a little bit more with his experience. He was great in Europe last year too.”

Man Utd target £16m Premier League star as Marcus Rashford replacement

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Everton star Iliman Ndiaye as a possible replacement for Marcus Rashford ahead of the summer transfer window.

Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan deal as United splashed out in the region of £200million to overhaul their misfiring attack with the addition of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko last summer.

In that time, Rashford has made a total of 37 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish champions, chipping in with a respectable tally of ten goals and 13 assists.

Fierce competition for places means Rashford is yet to establish himself as a nailed-on member of Hansi Flick’s XI when everyone is fit. However, 14 of the forward’s 23 league games have come as starts this term.

Rashford is still yet to provide any assurances over his plans beyond the summer and the England international’s resurgence in La Liga has only intensified talk and speculation surrounding his long-term future.

However, according to Spanish publication Sport, Barcelona are now ‘finally convinced’ by Rashford’s worth and the club’s hierarchy are actively looking to sign the 28-year-old on a permanent deal.

It’s claimed the Catalan giants are ‘already working’ on exercising a €30million (£26m) option in their deal to sign Rashford outright at the end of the season.

The United academy graduate is said to ‘feel comfortable’ in Barcelona, telling those in his inner circle that he would be keen to continue his career at the Camp Nou.

Michael Carrick had been been ‘counting on’ the idea of having Rashford at his disposal should he still be in charge of United next season – but the forward’s stance means the club have been forced to consider alternative options in the transfer market.

The report claims Yan Diomande is one of the many attackers on United’s shortlist having caught the club’s attention with his speed and dribbling ability across a phenomenal debut season with RB Leipzig.

Como’s Jesus Rodriguez, Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola and Strasbourg’s Martial Godo are also named as players in the thoughts of key decision-makers at Old Trafford.

Closer to home, United are believed to be keeping tabs on Ndiaye’s situation, a player who would need no time to adjust to the Premier League after two outstanding years with Everton.

In a mid-table Everton team, Ndiaye has racked up five goals and three assists in the English top flight this season.

The 26-year-old also enjoyed success at international level at the start of this year, playing an instrumental role as Pape Thiaw’s conquering Senegal side won the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ndiaye has shone across his two seasons on Merseyside (Picture: Getty)

Everton stand to make a tidy profit should they decide to cash in on Ndiaye in the summer having signed the winger for a fee of just £16million from Marseille back in 2024.

Ndiaye has three-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

In a recent interview with AceOdds.com, ex-United striker Louis Saha encouraged his former club to explore a move for Ndiaye, who he described as a ‘mix of Amad and Mbeumo’.

‘Ndiaye, from the moment he signed, he’s been an amazing talent. I would love to see him, maybe at some point at Manchester United, to be honest,’ Saha explained.

‘He’s a very skillful player. I like Ndiaye’s style. Like Mbeumo, he’s comfortable with the ball.

‘His work rate is very good… he’s a bit like a mix of Amad and Mbeumo to be honest.’

Should Man Utd explore a move for Ndiaye?

Marcus Rashford’s team-mate speaks out as three Man United icons slammed

Manchester United are not in action this weekend due to their FA Cup exit

Michael Carrick will be searching for how Manchester United can improve after his first defeat as manager. The club’s earlier FA Cup elimination means the squad are not in action until next weekend.

While other teams plan their path to a Wembley final, the United boss will want to guarantee his players are thoroughly prepared for their vital game against Aston Villa. The two sides are equal on points, with United positioned above Unai Emery’s outfit on goal difference.

An impressive sequence of six victories in seven matches propelled the team firmly into Champions League contention before suffering defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday. It marked the first setback of Carrick’s reign and the reaction to the result has split opinion.

Beyond Old Trafford, a Barcelona star has indicated where United faltered in their management of Marcus Rashford. Here, MEN Sport examines some of the latest developments surrounding the club.

Man United receive Marcus Rashford dig

Robert Lewandowski has revealed why he believes his Barcelona team-mate Marcus Rashford has recaptured his best form. The 28-year-old, who last featured for United in December 2024, has flourished since moving to Spain.

The forward has been a standout performer at his parent club and Barcelona have the option to make Rashford’s move permanent for £26million. Lewandowski has suggested that United’s management style may have negatively impacted Rashford’s performances.

“Marcus is the guy, if you give him confidence and he sees that you believe in him, he can give you back 200 per cent,” the striker told Sky Sports. “He’s a very nice guy. We spoke because we are sitting in the dressing room beside [each other]. We also play ping-pong.

“I see that this guy is very kind, very nice guy but also because of this he needs someone standing behind him. If he does have this confidence he can really play his best football and on the best level.

“He has huge potential. He has everything. He has speed, he has technique, he has a shot, he has left foot, right foot, skills.”

Man United icons criticised

Patrice Evra has expressed his bewilderment at the reaction of some United legends following the team’s defeat to Newcastle. His former colleague Carrick has managed to turn around the club’s season but that hasn’t shielded the new manager from criticism.

Following the Newcastle game, United great Paul Scholes took a swipe at the head coach. In a now-deleted Instagram story, he wrote: “United have been crap last four games… night.” Evra has questioned why Scholes and other United stalwarts haven’t fully backed Carrick.

“I hope Paul Scholes’ Instagram story is fake,” Evra told gambling site Stake. “I hope he was hacked. To be honest, I’m not surprised at that from Scholesy. He was the quietest player I’ve ever played with in my entire career. Now, in the media, he drops bombshells.

“I really don’t understand the lack of support behind Michael Carrick, he’s one of us and he’s doing very well. There’s been negative analysis from Scholesy, but also from Roy Keane and Gary Neville.

“It annoys me because we want to be in the top four, and those comments are unnecessary, but this is what you do when you work in TV. You can’t be positive, you have to be negative.”

Rashford’s dressing room ally takes swipe at Man United over where club failed

Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United career went off track before his move to Barcelona, and one of his current team-mates has pinpointed where he believes things went wrong

Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has suggested that Manchester United failed Marcus Rashford after the England international saw his Old Trafford career drift off course. The 28‑year‑old struggled to enjoy his football under Ruben Amorim before eventually falling out with the Portuguese coach.

His United career appeared to be over when Amorim claimed he would rather put his 63‑year‑old goalkeeping coach on the bench, citing what he saw as a lack of effort from Rashford. The forward has not played for United since December 2024 and even lost his No.10 shirt to Matheus Cunha over the summer.

After joining Aston Villa in the second half of last season, Rashford showed flashes of his quality before moving to Barcelona in February, where he has flourished and rediscovered his best form. In Catalonia, he has won over the Barca supporters, producing 10 goals and claiming 13 assists in 36 appearances so far.

However, his Barca team-mate Lewandowski, who sits next to the England international in the dressing room, believes United let him down by failing to stand by him.

“Marcus is the guy, if you give him confidence and he sees that you believe in him, he can give you back 200 per cent,” the Poland international told Sky Sports.

Barca have the option to make his move permanent for £26million, though reports in Spain suggest the club are keen to bring that fee down.

While Rashford has made it clear he wants to join Barca permanently in the summer, manager Hansi Flick admitted last month that the forward’s long‑term future with the club remains uncertain.

“[Sporting director] Deco and I always speak about our team and what we can do,” the German said when quizzed about Rashford.

“Marcus’ performances have been really good until now, but we have to manage it. It’s Deco’s job and the club’s job to work on next season, so we have to wait.

“We still have plenty more time, there are many months, many days, many weeks ahead of us, and that’s how it is.”

Marcus Rashford racist facing year-plus prison sentence after slur on camera

A rival fan who targeted Marcus Rashford with racial abuse could be imprisoned for more than a year

A Real Oviedo fan is facing a potential 15-month prison sentence after aiming a racist insult at Marcus Rashford. The Barcelona star, who joined on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United last summer, faced Oviedo at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium on September 25 of last year.

A 19-year-old home supporter shouted a racist insult as the Barcelona forward was preparing to take a corner during the La Liga fixture. The fan in question allegedly called the England international a Spanish form of the N-word.

The incident was caught on camera by a fan in the stands and uploaded on social media. The clip quickly spread online and reached nearly 29 million views in less than 24 hours.

FOLLOW OUR MAN UNITED FB PAGE! Latest news and analysis via the MEN’s Manchester United Facebook page

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the comment was clearly audible to other spectators and carried a clear racist intent directed at the player because of his skin colour, causing Rashford feelings of ‘frustration, shame and humiliation.’

From a legal standpoint, prosecutors are treating the case as a crime against dignity on racist grounds under Article 510.2.a and 510.5 of the Spanish Criminal Code, combined with an offence against moral integrity under Article 173.1.

In addition to the prison term requested, they are seeking a fine of €2,880 (£2,500), a four-year ban on working in teaching, sports or leisure environments, disqualification from passive suffrage and €2,000 (£1,738) in compensation for moral damages.

If the court were to convict solely on the offence against moral integrity, prosecutors are still pushing for the same prison term, alongside a stadium ban of more than five years covering competitions organised by La Liga, the RFEF, UEFA and FIFA.

The case follows the identification of the fan by the National Police using stadium security cameras and the opening of legal proceedings for hate crimes in the sports arena.

The incident involving Rashford is not the only recent controversy linked to Oviedo’s stadium. According to reports from Spanish media, the Asturias Prosecutor’s Office has also filed another case against a different supporter for racist abuse directed at Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid’s French striker, during a match played on August 24.

Marcus Rashford impacted by injury blow after Man United transfer ‘agreement’

Barcelona look to have made another big decision on Marcus Rashford with the Manchester United star set for a major boost

Marcus Rashford has seen an injury change his situation at Barcelona change following claims he has agreed to leave Manchester United. The 28-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful spell on loan at the Spanish club this season with 10 goals and 13 assists arriving in 35 games.

The availability of both Raphinha and Lamine Yamal has seen Rashford’s minutes deteriorate in recent weeks and he has started just one Barcelona’s last seven La Liga games. That could change very soon however, with Robert Lewandowski out injured.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Rashford will have the chance to play up front, potentially featuring there in Tuesday’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid. They have claimed that it is more likely Ferran Torres continues starting in the role, but that the United loanee is expected to get a chance as the striker.

Rashford has mostly been deployed on the wing since joining the Catalan Club with only four of his appearance this season in all competitions being through the middle. His versatility is a key attribute and could be one of many reasons Barcelona appear to have made a decision on his future.

FOLLOW OUR MAN UNITED FB PAGE! Latest news and analysis via the MEN’s Manchester United Facebook page

According to Spanish news outlet Sport, an agreement has been reached to sign Rashford permanently in the summer transfer window, following discussions with the player’s representatives.

That report states Barcelona have agreed to pay the £26million buy-option included in his loan switch but for the move to go through, he would have to lower his salary – which is currently in excess of £300,000-per-week – to sign a reported three-year contract at the Camp Nou.

Rashford’s agent, Arturo Canales, is said to have been meeting with Barcelona chief Deco to agree upon a change to his wages.

If a positive outcome from those talks does not arrive, there is a scenario where Rashford is brought back into the fold at Old Trafford, particularly if Michael Carrick gets the head coach job permanently.

Speaking on a potential return for Rashford last month, he said: “It’s difficult to say, because circumstances at certain times that I have not been involved in.

“It’s difficult for me to comment really. I think the fact he’s come through the academy and had such a big impact here is a positive, and as a club, he’s had some really big moments and good moments.

“And I’ve shared some with him in the past. So, football throws up certain things, and obviously certain players. You can’t stay here forever, and things happen, that’s how it is.”

However, coming back to his boyhood club does look unlikely with Rashford having issued a glowing verdict on his time at Barcelona.

“I don’t see anything here as like a pressure,” Rashford told BBC Sport in December. “It’s just, I’m here to play football. It’s been amazing. I feel welcome, I feel at home. I’ve just been enjoying every step of the way.”

Spanish media forced to take note of Marcus Rashford after ‘transfer agreement’

Marcus Rashford returned to action in Barcelona’s comprehensive victory over Villarreal on Saturday

Marcus Rashford’s return to the pitch for Barcelona after injury came in their 4-1 thrashing of Villarreal.

Hosting La Liga’s fourth-placed side on Saturday, it was an excellent performance by Hansi Flick’s side in what was the German’s 100th game in charge of the Spanish champions. The game was defined by Lamine Yamal’s first career hat-trick, with Robert Lewandowski adding a fourth goal in stoppage time.

Starting the game on the bench, Rashford came on in the 73rd minute for Raphinha in his first match back from suffering a knee bruise against Mallorca last month. The Manchester United loanee’s return from the sidelines came amid the latest updates surrounding his footballing future.

According to a report in Spanish news outlet Sport, the La Liga holders have come to an agreement to sign the 28-year-old on a permanent deal, all set to activate their option to buy Rashford for a fee worth £26million (€30million).

The report also claims the winger has helped to make it happen by considerably lowering his current wage of over £300,000-a-week, with a compromise between Rashford and Barca on his salary having since been made.

With 23 goals and assists to his name this season, the opportunity to add to that tally remains for Rashford, who was subject to similar verdicts from the Spanish media after his bright cameo against Villarreal caught the attention.

Sport

Upon his return to full fitness, the Englishman enjoyed 17 minutes of playing time in the victory that opened up a four-point lead over Real Madrid. Carlos Monfort of Sport handed Rashford a match rating of six out of 10 and lauded his ability of causing danger on the pitch out of nothing.

Monfort also wrote that Rashford’s penchant on turning a game on its head is a major reason why Barcelona are reportedly nearing a deal to keep him at the Camp Nou permanently. He said: “He is capable of creating danger even when there is none, and this ability to unbalance the game explains why Barca is committed to keeping him permanently.”

Football Espana

The match rating of six was popular among Spanish media outlets with Football Espana also handing Rashford the grade. The game was already done and dusted by the time the England ace was brought on but he failed to add a goal or assist in his brief cameo. They wrote: “Tried his best to make a difference late on, but it wasn’t to be.”

Mundo Deportivo

Even without a goal contribution to his name, Rashford still has the ability to make his mark on a game, and that’s exactly what Xavier Muñoz of Mundo Deportivo picked up on in the home clash against Villarreal.

FOLLOW OUR MAN UNITED FB PAGE! Latest news and analysis via the MEN’s Manchester United Facebook page

Muñoz pinpointed Rashford’s powerful right foot and excellent movement as aspects of his game that were noticeable during his cameo as he wrote: “He played for just over a quarter of an hour but made his presence felt with some intentional runs and his well-known foot when taking corners.”

Tribuna

For a lot of attacking players, time on the pitch without contributions to goals could be looked at as a bad day at the office. However, that isn’t the case for Rashford, who has enjoyed praise for his run out against the Yellow Submarine by several media sites, including Tribuna.

While much of the compliments were saved for the hat-trick hero in Yamal, Rashford was handed a respectable rating of six out of 10 with Oleksii Yani writing: “Active but no decisive contributions.”

Six Man United stars replying to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s brief message says it all

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s return to Old Trafford was a triumphant one for two reasons

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s reputation at Manchester United was obvious by the reaction he received from some of his former team-mates.

In his first time playing at Old Trafford last May since leaving the club to sign for West Ham in 2024, the right-back enjoyed a triumphant return to his former stomping grounds. The Hammers earned a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen.

The 28-year-old provided the assist for the West Ham captain’s goal and was subject to praise for his performance for the club’s first victory in nine games. Wan Bissaka – who spent five years at United – took to Instagram after the win where he posted photos from before and during the match.

His caption read: “Big W. Thanks for the warm reception today OT.” The post was popular among several of his former team-mates with six current United players, at the time, liking the post.

Current stars such as Lisandro Martinez and Goodwill Kukoni were among that group while the likes of Antony, Marcus Rashford, Andre Onana and Alejandro Garnacho also liked the defender’s post.

Former United players David De Gea, Mason Greenwood, Willy Kambwala, Alvaro Carreras, Sofyan Amrabat, Brandon Williams and Shola Shoretire also reacted to the post. West Ham finished 14th in Wan-Bissaka’s first season and then-Hammers boss Graham Potter claimed the DR Congo international was playing the best football of his career.

“He’s been really impressive,” the Englishman said. “As I’ve said before, I can’t say this categorically because I don’t know Aaron’s career, but I can’t imagine he’s played as well [before] as he has for us at this point in his career.

“He looks like he’s enjoying his football. He gives a lot to the team, really pleased with what he’s giving to the team offensively and defensively. As I said, it looks like he’s enjoying his football.

“And that’s not easy because the results we’ve had haven’t been that enjoyable. But nevertheless, his individual performances have been strong.” In his five-year stint at Old Trafford, Wan Bissaka played 190 times for United, scoring two goals and providing 13 assists.

While the full-back will be in action on Saturday with West Ham taking on Liverpool at Anfield, two of his former clubs will clash on Sunday with United hosting Crystal Palace.

Michael Carrick’s side will have the opportunity to strengthen their case for Champions League qualification which was bolstered by their narrow 1-0 away win at Everton on Monday. Benjamin Sesko’s winning goal at Hill Dickinson Stadium marked the striker’s fifth goal in his last seven league games.
