BENGALURU: When KL Rahul walked into the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday evening, it was with his usual swagger — but also a quiet sense of homecoming. From security personnel to ground staff, familiar faces paused to greet the homegrown star, who acknowledged them with a smile. The venue, after all, remains a second home for the Delhi Capitals’ senior pro. It’s a ground where he honed his craft and one where he will hope to rediscover rhythm after a stop-start campaign so far.Up against his former side, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on Saturday afternoon, Rahul will be eager to make the most of familiar conditions. After a prolific 2025 season in which he amassed 539 runs, the elegant opener has managed just 111 from four outings this year, with a highest score of 92 against Gujarat Titans. Few can question his pedigree, but consistency has eluded him. RCB, however, know better than most how dangerous Rahul can be if he settles in.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. The larger challenge, though, lies in halting a rampaging RCB unit that has made the Chinnaswamy a fortress this season. The surface here can be unforgiving for erring bowlers, and Capitals will need a marked improvement from their attack. Skipper Axar Patel and fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav are yet to find their rhythm, while the pace unit has lacked continuity. Auqib Nabi, who enjoyed a breakthrough domestic season, has featured only once, with Lungi Ngidi, Mukesh Kumar and T Natarajan preferred options so far. On a ground where variations and execution are key, that inconsistency could prove costly.ALSO READ: Impact role again on the cards for Virat Kohli? The struggles are not limited to bowling. Barring the promising Sameer Rizvi, the batting line-up has lacked stability. Experienced campaigners like David Miller, Pathum Nissanka, Nitish Rana and Tristan Stubbs have all blown hot and cold, leaving the side searching for a collective effort. The visitors, however, have had time to regroup. They arrived early in the city from Chennai and have put in the hard yards at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. For RCB, it has taken more than a decade to turn Chinnaswamy into a stronghold. This season they have been near flawless, winning all three home games in high-scoring encounters. Their campaign, much like last year, has been built on depth and shared responsibility rather than individual brilliance. While Phil Salt is yet to explode to his full potential, Virat Kohli has already donned the Orange Cap. Tim David’s finishing prowess and Devdutt Padikkal’s solidity at the top have further strengthened the batting unit. Leading the charge, however, has been skipper Rajat Patidar, who has been in imperious touch, scoring 222 runs in five matches at a strike rate in excess of 200.“His batting has been unbelievable,” Josh Hazlewood said on the eve of the game. “He walks in and can hit the first ball for four or six. He hasn’t just maintained momentum, he’s taken it to another level, especially in that 7-15 over phase.”RCB, who will don their green jerseys for the fixture, face a fresh challenge in what will be their first day game of the season. But with momentum and form on their side, they will back themselves to extend their dominance.

BENGALURU: The early phase of IPL has largely belonged to emerging talent and young turks. But the midweek fixture at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here was different. It turned out to be a vintage Wednesday. Two experienced exponents of the sport from Royal Challengers Bengaluru came out to show Lucknow Super Giants how the job is done.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Two seasoned campaigners led the charge. The 36-year-old Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/27) set the tone with a masterclass in swing bowling, exploiting movement early before nailing his yorkers at the death. At the other end, 35-year-old Josh Hazlewood (1/20) was relentless, operating on probing lengths that proved difficult to read. On a spongy surface, RCB’s pacers — with Rasikh Dar (4/24) joining the party — used the short ball to unsettle the opposition before bundling LSG out for a modest 146.Chasing a below-par target, RCB did flirt with a wobble but eventually sealed a five-wicket win in 15.1 overs, maintaining their unbeaten run at home this season.Phil Salt fell early, but Virat Kohli, coming in as an Impact Player for Suyash Sharma, quickly found his rhythm. Consecutive boundaries off Mohammed Shami showcased his trademark wristwork and timing. Kohli raced to 34 off his first 14 deliveries, putting the chase firmly on track. However, disciplined bowling from Avesh Khan, coupled with wickets at the other end, slowed the tempo. Kohli was denied a half-century, falling for 49 (34b; 6×4, 1×6), caught by Nicholas Pooran at long-on. But the others ensured the job was done with plenty to spare.

Josh Hazlewood

Earlier, LSG’s sluggish start to the IPL season showed little sign of improvement as their batting unit faltered again. On the eve of the clash, the franchise’s global cricket director, Tom Moody, had hoped the venue’s run-friendly reputation would act as a tonic. Instead, LSG’s struggles deepened.RCB’s tactic of using short-pitched deliveries effectively unsettled the batters. Hazlewood brought control at the top, Bhuvneshwar was incisive, and Rasikh starred with clever variations that left batters guessing.LSG never quite recovered after an early setback. Aiden Markram fell in the fourth over, miscuing a full toss from Rasikh to Devdutt Padikkal at covers. From there, it became a slow-paced procession. The batters struggled to gauge the pace of the wicket, often committing too early. RCB tightened the screws with 15 dot balls in the Powerplay, setting the tone for the collapse.Pooran’s lean run continued as he fell to Hazlewood, dragging a short ball back onto his stumps while attempting a pull. Mitchell Marsh (40; 32b; 3×4, 2×6) and Ayush Badoni (38) offered brief resistance, stitching together a 36-run stand to steady the innings. But Krunal Pandya (2/38) broke through, deceiving Marsh with a quicker delivery that crashed into the stumps before removing Abdul Samad in his next over.Mukul Choudhary’s 39 added some late respectability, but the innings never gained real momentum.

INJURY SCARE FOR RISHABH PANT

Rishabh Pant’s difficult outing was compounded by an injury scare. He was first beaten outside off by Hazlewood before being struck on the right abdomen by a rising short ball. Attempting to counterattack, he then inside-edged onto his left elbow, leaving him in visible discomfort. After receiving treatment, Pant walked off, only to return in the 16th over with LSG in trouble at 118/5. Still not fully at ease, the LSG skipper struggled for timing and was eventually dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar after facing just three deliveries.

Lucknow Super Giants are set to take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in what promises to be a high-octane IPL clash, with a potential major boost in the form of pace sensation Mayank Yadav’s return. The young speedster, who has been sidelined due to injury, is likely to be back in contention, and his comeback could add serious firepower to LSG’s already impressive bowling attack. On the eve of LSG’s match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mayank spent some time doing spot bowling at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, before having a long conversation with bowling coach B Arun as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The franchise’s Global Director of Cricket, Tom Moody, clarified that Mayank’s absence earlier in the season was not due to fitness concerns but a matter of match readiness.“Mayank is ready to go,” Moody said. “He didn’t come into our thinking early in the tournament because he was still a little underdone. Not from a fitness point of view, his fitness was good, but in terms of bowling loads and feeling comfortable. We feel he is now at that point. He has worked exceptionally hard.”While Mayank’s return is a positive, it also presents LSG with a selection dilemma. Their bowling unit has performed consistently so far, even though the team has struggled to put up competitive totals.“Our bowling has been pretty solid so far. We just haven’t produced the runs to support that,” Moody added. If Mayank is included in the playing XI, it could come at the expense of fellow pacer Avesh Khan, who is also returning from injury. Avesh had a preparatory stint with Durban Super Giants in SA20 to build up his workload ahead of the IPL season. Though he has been slightly expensive, conceding runs at over 10 per over, his experience remains a valuable asset for the team.Moody also confirmed that LSG’s pace battery is close to full strength, with Mohsin Khan nearing a return as well.“The likes of Mayank, Mohsin and Avesh have all had long-term injuries. Our medical team has worked exceptionally hard to get them ready. They’re all available now. Mohsin will probably have a final test on match day,” he said.As LSG gear up to face an in-form RCB side at a batting-friendly venue, the possible return of Mayank Yadav could be a game-changer, adding pace, excitement, and a fresh edge to their campaign.

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 23 of IPL 2026 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium today, April 15. This encounter features a stark contrast between the tournament’s best batting unit and its most economical bowling attack . RCB enters the match in third place after a high-scoring win over Mumbai Indians, having crossed the 200-run mark in every match this season . LSG, currently seventh, is looking to bounce back after a loss to Gujarat Titans, relying on a bowling unit that has yet to concede 200 runs this year. Lucknow Super Giants have had an inconsistent season, winning as many matches as they’ve lost, largely due to underwhelming performances from key overseas players Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran. However, unexpected contributors such as Mukul Choudhary and a strong bowling unit led by Mohammed Shami have provided positives. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, meanwhile, have started strongly, winning three of their four matches and looking like a well-settled unit under captain Rajat Patidar, who has been in excellent form, especially against pace. While RCB’s batting has been consistent, their bowling, particularly at the death, remains a concern, with one of the poorest economy rates this season.

M Chinnaswamy set for massive revamp! KSCA plans 20,000-seat expansion | Cricket News – The Times of India

Plans are underway to significantly upgrade the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, with the Karnataka State Cricket Association initiating steps towards a long-term renovation aimed at enhancing capacity and overall fan experience. The move comes shortly after KSCA officials, led by president Venkatesh Prasad, met Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar to discuss an ambitious expansion plan. The proposal seeks to increase the stadium’s seating capacity, currently around 34,000, by an additional 20,000 seats.

Taking the first formal step, the KSCA has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI), inviting proposals for a comprehensive overhaul. The project will cover architectural and structural redesign, improved spectator facilities, better crowd movement systems, along with upgraded parking and traffic management solutions. While no fixed deadline has been outlined yet, Prasad acknowledged the scale and complexity of the project.“We haven’t set a timeline for completing the renovation because it’s a lengthy process,” Prasad told Deccan Herald. “We have to invite bids and hold multiple meetings to secure various approvals. It will take considerable time. But we are determined to transform the stadium, hopefully during my tenure.”Prasad also clarified that the idea has been in the works for years and is not a sudden initiative.“It’s not that I’ve come into office now and want to make changes immediately,” he emphasised. “I’ve been thinking about this for the last 10 years. Even when I was pursuing my MBA in International Sports Management, I kept coming back to one thing — the spectators. They are our biggest stakeholders, yet they have little say. The game is what it is because of them, and the least we can do is provide the best possible match experience at the stadium.Highlighting the need for modernisation, he pointed out that the venue, originally built in the 1970s, must now evolve with the city’s rapid growth.“The stadium is, of course, quite old. With due respect to those who built it, it needs to evolve. It was constructed in the 1970s with perhaps a vision for the next 50 years. But Bengaluru has grown beyond anyone’s imagination, so everything must evolve accordingly.”He also referenced upgrades carried out at other iconic Indian venues such as Wankhede Stadium, Eden Gardens and M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, stressing that it is now time for Chinnaswamy to undergo a similar transformation.“So many facilities at the stadium look temporary and inadequate at the moment. Commentators’ boxes, spectator amenities… All that needs to change, and that’s the only constant,” he added. With Bengaluru continuing to grow as a major cricketing hub, the proposed revamp could mark a significant step towards aligning one of India’s most iconic venues with modern standards.

NEW DELHI: Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori didn’t mince words after his side’s IPL 2026 opener defeat, labelling their bowling effort as “one of our poorer performances” following a six-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Despite posting a competitive 201/9 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, SRH were left chasing shadows as RCB stormed home in just 15.4 overs, powered by Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal.Vettori admitted the game slipped away after an early breakthrough, with SRH failing to maintain control. “You have to get a good start, which we did against (Phil) Salt, but we weren’t at our best with the ball. We weren’t as disciplined as we needed to be,” he said. The former New Zealand captain highlighted how the bowlers allowed too many scoring chances. “We gave a lot of scoring opportunities to Virat and Padikkal, who played exceptionally well,” he added.Even after removing Phil Salt early, SRH could not build pressure. “We should have been able to maintain a little bit more discipline after that wicket,” Vettori noted, stressing that inconsistency in lengths proved costly.Missed lengths, missed opportunityVettori pointed to execution as the key difference, especially after observing how effectively RCB bowled. “We learned a lot from how RCB bowled… but we just weren’t able to implement that,” he said.He singled out debutant Jacob Duffy for setting the benchmark. “Duffy in particular showed the length to bowl on that surface,” Vettori said, contrasting it with SRH’s inability to hit the right areas consistently.“We just missed our lengths too much. Today was one of our challenging bowling displays,” he admitted, adding that SRH only found some rhythm towards the end.200 no longer enough at ChinnaswamyVettori also acknowledged that 200 is no longer a safe total on batting-friendly surfaces. “Maybe a couple of years ago you’d think 200 is safe, but we understand where the game’s gone and how destructive that RCB batting line-up is,” he said. While the bowling came under scrutiny, Vettori backed his batting unit, highlighting contributions from players like Aniket Verma and the depth in the top order. With young bowlers like David Payne and Harsh Dubey still finding their feet, SRH will look to regroup quickly.

Virat Kohli spills truth: ‘I’ve always risked burnout, not being undercooked’ after RCB win | Cricket News – The Times of India

Virat Kohli once again showed why he is the heartbeat of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, steering his side to a dominant six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 season opener on Saturday. The former India captain hit an unbeaten 38-ball 69 as RCB chased down 202 in just 15.4 overs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Reflecting on his performance, Kohli said, “It’s good to get back out there. The last T20 game I played was the final last year, but the way I batted in the recent one-day series really helped me stay in that momentum. I wasn’t playing shots that I don’t usually play… these breaks help me mentally. I stay fresh, I stay excited. Whenever I come back to play, it’s 120%.” The chase was powered by a brilliant 26-ball 61 from impact substitute Devdutt Padikkal. Kohli lauded his young partner’s performance: “Outstanding knock. Right from the word go, I had plans of going aggressive in the powerplay. But when I saw him play, I was like, just keep putting him back on strike. He completely took the game away from the opposition. I even told him, that shot he hit off the slower ball over mid-on for six… just keep going. He’s hitting the ball amazingly well.” Kohli also emphasised the importance of team contribution over individual records: “As a player, you don’t want to just hold on to a spot; you want to keep performing and keep putting in the work for the team.” RCB’s chase was anchored by Kohli and Padikkal’s 101-run stand for the second wicket, after the team lost opener Phil Salt early. Kohli’s innings included five fours and five sixes, with some trademark shots like the straight six that hit the sight screen, and a swat flick executed with minimal movement, demonstrating his mastery of timing and placement. Earlier, SRH had posted 201/9, with stand-in captain Ishan Kishan top-scoring with 80 off 38 balls, including eight fours and five sixes. Jacob Duffy, on IPL debut, impressed with figures of 3/22, dismantling SRH’s top order. Phil Salt also took a stunning one-handed catch in the deep to dismiss Kishan. Kohli, who now plays only 50-over cricket for India after retiring from Tests and T20Is, remains a key figure for RCB. “The kind of scheduling over the last 15 years meant there was always a risk of burnout. These breaks help me mentally… as long as you’re physically fit and mentally excited, both things come together nicely, then you’re able to contribute to the team’s cause,” he added. With this victory, RCB began their IPL 2026 campaign in style, honouring the 11 fans who tragically lost their lives at last year’s title parade with black armbands, empty seats, and a minute’s silence before the game.

BENGALURU: Nine months after a homecoming that ended in tragedy, Royal Challengers Bengaluru returned to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, beginning preparations for the Indian Premier League, which begins here on March 28.A small but vocal group of fans gathered outside the stadium to welcome the players as the RCB contingent arrived around 4.30 pm. The session lasted two hours before rain forced an early wrap at 6.30 pm.

The spotlight, unsurprisingly, was on Virat Kohli. The former captain looked in rhythm right away as the session opened with a team huddle, where Kohli and head coach Andy Flower addressed a partially assembled squad.Skipper Rajat Patidar was the most notable absentee and is expected to join on Thursday. Batting coach Dinesh Karthik was also missing, while left-arm pacer Yash Dayal, retained for Rs 5 crore and facing criminal charges, was also absent. Among overseas recruits, only England wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox has arrived so far. However, TOI has learnt that the director of cricket Mo Bobat and the logistics team have mapped out travel plans for the overseas players well in advance, ensuring minimal disruption despite the ongoing unrest in West Asia.Amid the noise of construction work inside the stadium, Kohli’s bat provided the loudest sound. His trademark lofted strokes repeatedly cleared the midwicket boundary, landing deep into the stands.Kohli trained alongside Karnataka skipper and southpaw Devdutt Padikkal, with the duo taking turns against a mix of pace and spin. In an interesting move, RCB did away with net bowlers for the session, relying instead on their own bowling unit and sidearm specialists. The 37-year-old appeared particularly assured against spin, stepping out confidently against the Krunal Pandya-led spin attack. He showed similar intent against Bhuvneshwar Kumar and new recruit Venkatesh Iyer, maintaining intensity throughout.RCB, who returned to the Bengaluru venue after much dilly-dally, will open their campaign against fellow southerners Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28. They will play four more home games at the venue and play two fixtures in Raipur.

Unbox event scrapped

The franchise’s popular ‘Unbox’ event — a fan engagement initiative that has drawn large crowds in recent seasons — will not be held this year. While there hasn’t been an official announcement, it appears the tight schedule and the planned mock drills at the stadium on Mar 23 and 26 led to the decision.

Virat Kohli has arrived in Bengaluru well ahead of the upcoming IPL season, joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru as they gear up to defend their title. The star batter was central to RCB’s historic triumph last season, finishing with 657 runs at a strike rate of 144.71 and an impressive average of 54.75, including eight half-centuries. His consistency at the top played a huge role in ending the franchise’s long wait for silverware.RCB finally broke their 18-year title drought, with Rajat Patidar stepping up as a leader during the campaign. Having achieved that milestone, the focus now shifts to repeating the success in what promises to be a challenging title defence.Kohli had already retired from T20Is and Tests. With only ODIs and the IPL left, each appearance now carries added significance.Even at 37, Kohli continues to perform at an elite level. His numbers from last season underline his enduring quality, as he remains one of the most complete batters in the format, capable of both anchoring and accelerating as needed. His recent ODI form further highlights his consistency.
