5 Man United stars at risk if Luis Enrique gets job and picks favourite set-up

Spanish manager Luis Enrique has been linked with the Manchester United job on more than one occasion

Until Manchester United make an official decision on their new permanent manager, some familiar names are likely to be in the mix. Luis Enrique was linked with an Old Trafford move in 2022, the same year in which United ended up appointing Erik ten Hag, while he has been in the headlines again of late to give the current squad food for thought. He is also the fourth favourite with the bookies.

The Spaniard has thrived at Paris Saint-Germain, leading the club to their first ever Champions League triumph last season. His current contract at the Parc des Princes is believed to run until 2027, though the club’s higher-ups are keen on keeping him around for longer.

It may be the case that Michael Carrick’s results as interim manager are enough to convince United chiefs to keep him on board on a permanent basis. However, if the club decides to look elsewhere, Luis Enrique’s past history could spell bad news for some players in the squad.

In April 2023, shortly before the PSG boss took his current role, The Coaches’ Voice delved into Luis Enrique’s preferred formations and tactics. However, as we have seen in the last two-and-a-half years, he has shown a flexibility based on the players at his disposal.

The 55-year-old has generally favoured a 4-3-3 set-up for club and international sides, though he has also shown a willingness to operate with a back three when the situation calls for it. Here’s what that might mean for United’s current crop.

4-3-3 (Spain style)

At Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup with Spain, 4-3-3 was the favoured approach from Luis Enrique. However, the make-up of those sides wasn’t always the same. In Qatar, possession-focused Dani Olmo was used in a wide role for the memorable 7-0 victory over Costa Rica – a contrast to more direct players like Pablo Sarabia and Mikel Oyarzabal at the previous major tournament.

A return to the 2022 approach could see Bruno Fernandes move from midfield into a more attacking role off the left. Matheus Cunha’s skill-set also suits the system, though, and he might not want too much overhaul after Casemiro’s exit.

Based on the current players on United’s books, this approach might need a few new faces. Luis Enrique preferred some control at the back with Spain, using Rodri as a central defender during the 2022 World Cup. Such an approach appears to lend itself well to Lisandro Martinez, who is comfortable enough on the ball to have slotted in as a defensive midfielder in the past, while it could offer a route back in for Noussair Mazraoui ahead of Diogo Dalot at full-back, though the likes of Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt might worry about their minutes in the middle.

While we’ve included Manuel Ugarte in this set-up, it’s worth noting the Uruguayan didn’t gel with the manager at Paris Saint-Germain. He may end up being given another chance, but it’s perhaps more likely that we see a new addition in the middle of the park.

Potential XI: Lammens; Mazraoui, Yoro, Martinez, Shaw; Ugarte, Mainoo, Fernandes; Mbeumo, Sesko, Cunha

4-3-3 (PSG style)

The 4-3-3 he uses with PSG has at times made use of a false nine system, with Ousmane Dembele thriving in the role during last season’s run to Champions League glory. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue occupied the wide roles in the final, leaving Inter Milan with no hope against the attacking threat.

One player whose role might be called into question is Benjamin Sesko, who fits the Alvaro Morata role used by Luis Enrique for Spain but whose closest analog in PSG’s squad – Goncalo Ramos – has largely been used as a substitute.

Luke Shaw is another who might struggle for regular minutes. Luis Enrique likes his full-backs to be high-energy players who get up and down the field at will – think back to those occasions when Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi have combined – so a 30-year-old with a patchy fitness record might not be someone he feels he could rely on.

This could well be a set-up that lends itself to Martinez stepping into midfield to offer some balance as the full-backs fly forward. Whet United might give for the 2022/23 version of Casemiro in this squad.

Potential XI: Lammens; Dalot, Yoro, Maguire, Dorgu; Martinez, Mainoo, Fernandes; Mbeumo, Cunha, Amad

3-4-2-1

United’s players have plenty of experience with a back three thanks to Ruben Amorim, even if it wasn’t always successful. The Portuguese coach prioritised a new wing-back after taking charge in 2024, with Patrick Dorgu brought in, and the Dane might well be Luis Enrique’s preference to occupy the left wing-back role in which Nuno Mendes thrived at times in Ligue 1.

The manager has varied his attacking approach on those occasions he has gone three-at-the-back. Two genuinely attacking supporting forwards has been the order of the day, though, suggesting a front three of Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko isn’t out of the question.

This approach was often taken against weaker opponents, allowing for a combination between Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes which Amorim didn’t consider workable in the Premier League. Based on Luis Enrique’s previous, it may be that this set-up is used a little less frequently (if at all).

Potential XI: Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martinez; Amad, Mainoo, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko

Who is at risk?

As we can see, there’s a fair amount of variability in the approaches Luis Enrique has taken in the past. The Premier League is different enough from both Ligue 1 and international football that – if installed – the manager would probably prefer to experiment during pre-season to get a feel for what works best.

Certain roles will no doubt be filled by new additions but there are players who might already look for an escape route if the Spaniard comes in. Ugarte’s reasons have already been documented, while De Ligt, Sesko, Shaw and Dalot could all sense their opportunities becoming limited depending on the new manager’s preferences – though one would imagine Sesko is the most likely of that group to get a proper chance to make his case after clear signs of improvement over the course of this season.

Top Man Utd target to rule himself out of replacing Carrick as agreement nears

Paris Saint‑Germain boss Luis Enrique has been among the names linked with the Manchester United job

Manchester United have suffered a major setback in their search for a new manager, with shortlisted candidate Luis Enrique now expected to sign a new contract at Paris Saint‑Germain. According to the i paper, club president Nasser Al‑Khelaifi is eager to extend Enrique’s deal beyond 2027 – a development that leaves Michael Carrick ‘closing in’ on the full‑time job.

It’s reported that the signing of Spanish wonderkid Dro Fernandez, secured ahead of several top European clubs, was used as a ‘sweetener’ to reassure Enrique that PSG are fully committed to his long‑term project. United are thought to have shortlisted Enrique, with interest said to come from chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox – but that move may now be off the table.

Last week, Enrique was asked about his future during a brief interaction with a fan. The video, which went viral online, suggested the 55‑year‑old wants to stay put.

In the video, Enrique stopped his car to sign autographs for fans when one stated: “I hope you stay with PSG for a long time.”

The Spanish manager’s reply was telling as he said: “Me too.”

The same fan then brought up United, asking: “Not at United though?” Enrique simply laughed off the suggestion.

Following that development, Carrick is now said to be ‘closing in’ on becoming the next permanent manager, with Ineos understood to be leaning towards offering him the full‑time role at Old Trafford – albeit initially on a ‘short‑term basis.’

The former midfielder has impressed since taking over in January, losing just once and guiding United up to third in the table.

Champions League football is becoming an increasingly realistic prospect for next season, and if United do secure qualification, it would be difficult to overlook Carrick.

While no decision is expected before the end of the season, it’s clear that if the club choose to go in a different direction, Enrique could already be off the table.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has emerged as another contender for the Old Trafford job. His contract is due to expire this summer after nearly three years in charge on the south coast.

Iraola has built an impressive reputation, guiding Bournemouth to 12th and ninth in his first two Premier League seasons.

Despite losing several influential players in the summer, he has the Cherries on course for another strong finish – currently sitting 13th and unbeaten in 11 matches.

Five Pep Guardiola replacements Man City could eye as boss to decide on future

Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to consider his long-term future at Manchester City after the Carabao Cup final with five potential successors identified

Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to contemplate his long-term future at Manchester City following the upcoming Carabao Cup final this weekend. The Blues will face off against Arsenal at Wembley Stadium in a bid for silverware on Sunday.

This crucial match comes hot on the heels of City’s Champions League exit, having been defeated 5-1 on aggregate by Real Madrid in the round of 16. Guardiola’s team suffered a 3-0 loss at the Bernabeu last week and were dealt a further blow when Bernardo Silva was sent off early in the return leg at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola reportedly plans to take some time out immediately after the Carabao Cup final to consider what’s best for both him and the club. The 55-year-old’s current contract extends until 2027, following an extension signed in November 2024.

Despite the length of his contract, speculation about Guardiola’s future has been rife. Former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is among those rumoured to be in the running as a potential successor when Guardiola eventually steps down. The Manchester Evening News takes a look at five managers who could potentially replace him.

Enzo Maresca

The former Chelsea manager was linked with the City job during his tenure at Stamford Bridge. The Italian is currently without a club after parting ways with the west London side in January.

During his 18-month tenure, Maresca secured the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup with Chelsea. Maresca has had two previous stints with City, first overseeing the Elite Development squad and subsequently returning as a first-team assistant in 2022.

He was linked with the City position towards the conclusion of his Chelsea tenure and is understood to have held discussions with the club. The 46-year-old is presently regarded as the bookmakers’ frontrunner to take over from Guardiola.

Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique is the most decorated manager on this list. The 55-year-old has already followed in Guardiola’s footsteps once during his career, when he took over from him as Barcelona B boss in 2008.

Following periods at Roma and Celta Vigo, Enrique became the first-team manager at the Camp Nou and guided the Catalan side to two La Liga titles and Champions League success in 2015. Two periods in charge of Spain followed but it is his achievements at Paris Saint-Germain that are currently earning recognition.

Enrique was the manager who eventually delivered PSG a Champions League trophy last season. Like Guardiola, his contract is set to expire in 2027, though there have been suggestions of a potential extension.

Xabi Alonso

The former Liverpool midfielder is currently available after leaving Real Madrid in January. Alonso’s earlier achievements at Bayer Leverkusen showcased his managerial credentials. Guardiola initially brought Alonso to Germany when he signed him for Bayern Munich in 2014.

Following his retirement from playing, the 44-year-old spent several years coaching youth teams before taking charge at Leverkusen in 2022. During his second campaign, Alonso guided the club to their maiden Bundesliga championship, going undefeated throughout the league season, whilst also securing the 2024 DFB-Pokal.

Vincent Kompany

A City icon, Kompany is now thriving in management. Questions were asked when the former Burnley manager replaced Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich in 2024, though the Belgian rose to the challenge, claiming the Bundesliga last term.

Kompany featured under Guardiola for three seasons during the latter stages of his City playing days and would probably embrace a sentimental return to the club at some point. Nevertheless, the Bayern manager penned a contract extension until 2029 in October.

Pep Lijnders

An unconventional choice for City. The former Liverpool assistant joined Guardiola’s backroom team in June 2025. Lijnders collaborated with Jurgen Klopp throughout much of his spell at Anfield.

He has previously held two managerial positions with NEC Nijmegen and Red Bull Salzburg, respectively. The blueprint for Guardiola being replaced by his assistant was established by the late Tito Vilanova at Barcelona in 2012.

JJ Gabriel makes big impression as Luis Enrique labelled ‘dream’ Man United boss

Manchester United youth star JJ Gabriel continues to impress for the Under-18s while he is made to wait for a first-team chance

Manchester United are benefiting from a weekend break following their early exit from the FA Cup. The 2024 winners were knocked out by Brighton in the third round, whilst top-four rivals Liverpool and Chelsea have both faced additional fixtures to put extra miles in their legs.

Michael Carrick’s squad also have no midweek commitments, having missed out on European qualification this season thanks to their Europa League final defeat. This means that by the time they take on Aston Villa on March 15, they’ll have enjoyed more than a week without a match.

Victory over Unai Emery’s side could prove pivotal in the race for Champions League football. United and Villa are tied on points in third and fourth positions respectively, with Chelsea trailing the duo by just three points and Liverpool still in the mix.

Whatever unfolds between now and May has a chance of significantly influencing United’s managerial strategy and transfer activity. Here are the latest developments from around Old Trafford.

Gabriel continues scoring streak

Manchester United prodigy JJ Gabriel delivered another standout performance on Saturday. The youngster was on target twice as United’s Under-18s thrashed Nottingham Forest, making the case for a first team chance when he becomes eligible to play Premier League football next season.

Gabriel’s opener arrived eight minutes before the interval when his strike from distance appeared to catch a deflection en route to the top corner. His second goal was even better with the teenager giving Forest defenders short shrift before bending a shot high beyond the goalkeeper’s reach.

Jay McEvoy, Louie Bradbury and Noah Ajayi were also on the scoresheet in a 5-2 victory for Darren Fletcher’s side. Gabriel has now netted 16 times in 18 league matches this campaign despite only celebrating his 15th birthday in October.

Luis Enrique backed

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has heaped praise on Luis Enrique. The Paris Saint-Germain manager is amongst those who have been touted for the Old Trafford position should Michael Carrick not be handed the role on a permanent basis, although he could still choose to prolong his tenure in France.

“Luis Enrique would be a dream coach for Man United,” Evra told Stake as he offered his assessment of the ex-Spain and Barcelona boss. “I love the man, I love his philosophy, what he went through in his personal life and overcame it shows his personality.

“The job he’s done at PSG by bringing them a Champions League without Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe or Neymar, it’s a fantastic job. Players would have to work really hard to play for Man United, they’ll have to run a lot and I think Enrique would bring that.”

PSG have a big test against English opposition in midweek as they take on Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash. They prepared for the game with defeat, though, losing at home to Monaco on Friday night.

Man United deny manager approach as Luis Enrique dismissed for Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick aims to maintain his unbeaten run during this tenure as Manchester United manager when his team heads to Everton next week

Michael Carrick and Manchester United are benefiting from an extended spell without fixtures after their early exit from the FA Cup. Following their elimination under Darren Fletcher’s stewardship, United found themselves without a match over the weekend.

Attention turns instead to their upcoming Premier League encounter against Everton. By the time they return to action, United will have had 13 days since their 1-1 stalemate with West Ham.

Carrick will be aiming to extend his unbeaten streak, having overseen five matches without defeat thus far, including victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham. Currently, he holds the position until the campaign’s conclusion, but his brilliant beginning has already sparked considerable demands for his appointment beyond the summer.

One manager who has been suggested as a potential successor is Luis Enrique. However, the prospect of his arrival has now been dismissed by a club legend. The Manchester Evening News delivers the latest developments from Old Trafford.

Luis Enrique prospect dismissed

United legend Wayne Rooney was questioned about who he’d prefer to see permanently replace Amorim and he backed Carrick. The England icon also downplayed the influence a manager such as PSG boss Enrique would bring.

“I think with Luis Enrique, I’ve been there and we’ve tried different managers. We tried [Jose] Mourinho and [Louis] van Gaal,” said Rooney on The Overlap Fan Debate.

“Then we tried the likes of [Erik] ten Hag and [Ruben] Amorim and they don’t work. I just think Carrick makes sense. I felt that from the minute I knew he was going in.

“He’s a real calming influence. I think we’re sometimes quick to overlook what’s right here in front of us and say, ‘We’ve got this manager from Turkey or Spain who is going to come in and do this.’

“But actually they’ve got no interest in the football club. At least this will give the foundations for the club to keep building. The infrastructure will be back at the football club.”

Club responds to Jurgen Klopp claims

Elsewhere on the managerial front, the representative of former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made a bombshell claim on Monday, suggesting that both Chelsea and United approached the German following his departure from Anfield.

Klopp departed in 2024 following a silverware-filled eight-year spell. His representative, Marc Kosicke, now alleges that both the London side and United subsequently sounded out Klopp.

However, sources tell MEN Sport that the club has dismissed claims of approaching Klopp. United rejected the suggestion they ever made contact with the manager either directly or via a third party. Chelsea are also understood to have issued a denial.
