Manchester United have a rich history when it comes to promoting players from their academy into the first team. The Class of ’92 will forever be the standard the Reds aspire towards for their young players but in recent years, golden generations have been few and far between.

That being said, we have still seen gems come through the ranks who have contributed to the first team. Kobbie Mainoo is the standout of recent years while Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad have all had varying degrees of success and exposure to the United starting XI.

With Ruben Amorim in charge, the relationship between the first team and academy was strained but, under Michael Carrick’s watch, this is starting to mend. Once again, it seems like the club are united in their approach to development and that pathway from Carrington to Old Trafford is now realistic.

There are plenty of young players who are impressing but United’s attackers are the ones who are really catching the eye. Even if you are not following the academy regularly, you will have heard of the name JJ Gabriel. The 15-year-old has been the subject of highlight reels aplenty this season.

Despite being in his mid teens, the forward has been excelling in the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup. He has scored an astonishing 21 goals in 24 appearances and plays with the elegance of a more seasoned professional. Gabriel has even been invited into first team training sessions this season – a remarkable feat for someone so young.

However, because of his age, Gabriel has been unable to play in the Premier League this season. That ban will lift in the summer and there is already hope he will be able to emulate the success of Max Dowman at Arsenal.

Thanks to the brilliance of Gabriel, Noah Ajayi has floated under the radar this season. However, he is another player who the Reds think highly of.

The 17-year-old German winger has scored a more modest seven goals in 16 appearances this season but has hit red hot form at the right time as United fought their way to the FA Youth Cup semi-finals. That competition is a testing ground for young players and Ajayi is proving more than capable of holding his own.

He is also closer to making that step up to the first team as he has a physical presence that is more suited to senior football. His goal in the victory over Sunderland was a sign of his potential as he showed great awareness to drift through the defence and slot home.

But while Ajayi is progressing nicely away from the limelight, Kai Rooney is having to adapt to senior exposure at just 16.

Of course, his surname has led to this fame but don’t be fooled, Rooney is not simply living off his father’s legacy. The winger has been slowly exposed to the U18s this season and has made his Old Trafford debut in the FA Youth Cup.

He bagged his first U18s goal against Middlesbrough in August and after a spell away from the age group, returned in February to bag a goal and an assist in three U18 Premier League matches. Sadly for Rooney, injury has brought a premature end to his season.

But, those dreaming of another Rooney stealing the headlines for United in the future can take encouragement from the progress he has made this term. All this is incredibly positive for the Reds and should be encouraged for the future.

Continuing to bring players through the academy will allow the Reds to save money in transfer windows. Even if just one of these players becomes a regular United starter, the investment in the academy continues to be worthwhile.

With Manchester United enjoying a strong run of form, supporters could be forgiven for wanting to stay in the moment.

However, as the campaign moves to its closing stretch, focus is naturally shifting toward the forthcoming summer transfer window. Which coach will be in charge of United’s recruitment strategy remains uncertain, although Michael Carrick has firmly placed himself as the leading candidate after guiding the team to seven victories in 10 games since stepping in for Ruben Amorim as interim manager in January.

But additions are expected, particularly in midfield. Casemiro has already confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season, the longer-term situation surrounding Kobbie Mainoo remains unresolved, and uncertainty still surrounds players such as Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte.

If Rio Ferdinand has his way, reinforcements could arrive across multiple areas (but more on that shortly). A key question is whether the club will look to external signings or promote from within – with talents like JJ Gabriel making an impression in the academy. With that in mind, here are the latest Manchester United-related headlines.

JJ Gabriel decision made

Manchester United intend to include JJ Gabriel in their pre-season squad this summer, highlighting just how highly the 15-year-old is valued internally. Already regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in the nation, Gabriel has excelled for United’s U18 side during this season.

His development has caught the attention of senior staff, including Carrick, who has monitored him closely in recent weeks. Plans are now in place for the youngster to be part of the club’s upcoming European pre-season tour, with talks continuing regarding a schedule that may include Scandinavia and other locations.

United are committed to creating a clear route into the senior squad for their top academy players, and Gabriel’s involvement in the tour strongly reflects their confidence in his ability. He is not expected to be the only youngster included, especially with several first-team players likely to miss early pre-season due to World Cup duties.

Gabriel has delivered outstanding numbers, netting 21 goals in 23 matches for the U18s this season. He has also trained with the senior side multiple times, with Carrick describing him as a “big talent.”

Whether this early involvement leads to a senior squad role next season is still uncertain, but Gabriel now has a chance to follow a similar path to Max Dowman of Arsenal, who received a pre-season opportunity at 15 last summer before moving into the first-team setup.

Ferdinand outlines transfer wish list

Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has detailed what he believes would constitute a successful transfer window, calling for four key additions: a striker, a full-back and two midfielders.

Ferdinand believes a “realistic” window would not involve a full-scale rebuild, but instead focused upgrades – especially in midfield – along with extra depth in attack and at full-back. While he acknowledges the benefit of signing another striker to compete with Sesko, he stresses that reinforcing central midfield should take precedence.

“If United go and get four players in the next window and two of those are starters, then I think that’s a realistic transfer window,” Ferdinand said on his podcast. “If I was the club, my priorities would be two central midfielders, one who starts and maybe a younger one who you can blood in here and there around Bruno [Fernandes], Kobbie [Mainoo] and the one you bring in.

“I would also go for another forward, a younger one who is going to be more of a back-up to what we’ve already got. And I would go for a full-back. That’s it. I know you can say you want 10 new players and most positions can be improved but I don’t think you need a huge revamp, it’s still a lot but that’s realistic.”

A number of midfielders have already been connected with a potential move to Old Trafford, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. However, Ferdinand made it clear which player he would prioritise.

“Beginning of the season everyone was talking about [Carlos] Baleba, he seems to have gone off the boil a little bit form wise. Elliot Anderson, he seems to have jumped to the front of the queue. I think he’s a wonderful player.”

He continued: “I think he is the right type not only of player but character, I think he’d be a good addition to the squad… I just think the type of midfielder United need is somebody who is all-action, who can cover ground, who is dynamic, who is robust, strong, who can drive a team. Right now Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes.”

Manchester United are planning to include talented youngster JJ Gabriel in their pre-season tour squad this summer. United are keen to show Gabriel there is a pathway to the first-team, and taking him on tour would be another show of faith in his huge potential.

Gabriel has scored 21 goals in 23 appearances for the Under-18s this season. He has already trained with the first-team on several occasions, and Michael Carrick described him as a “big talent.”

As recognition of Gabriel’s talent, it’s understood the teenager is expected to form part of United’s tour squad, which will include more academy products than usual due to the World Cup.

United are set to tour Europe this summer, with talks ongoing to finalise a schedule that includes visits to Scandinavia and other parts of Europe.

Historically, United have earmarked the first week of July as the first week of pre-season training at Carrington. This year the World Cup will run between June 11 and July 19.

Gabriel has not stepped up to Under-21 level this season because he was 14 when the campaign began. United could have been fined for playing Gabriel in the U21 team due to his age at the start of the season, so it was agreed that he would exclusively play U18 football this term.

United are developing Gabriel by playing him in the U18s and promoting him to first-team training on a more regular basis. The talented prospect only celebrated his 15th birthday in October.

Gabriel may already have been included in a senior Premier League matchday squad this season if the rules had been different. Because Gabriel was 14 at the start of the season, he is ineligible to play in the Premier League, although the FA Cup allows teenagers to feature.

But United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton at the first hurdle. Darren Fletcher was in caretaker charge for that game, and he was asked whether Gabriel could be involved during the build-up.

Fletcher smiled, saying: “Well, he could be, but he’s not going to be because obviously anybody could be picked. But JJ is a fantastic talent. I’ve enjoyed working with him immensely, getting to know him.

“He’s a young lad with a massive sort of hype, you know there’s a lot of noise around him and deservedly so because he’s a real talented kid. He works hard. First thing I’d say is he loves football.

“He loves training, he loves playing, he loves having the ball, he loves expressing himself. He makes fantastic decisions. “He’s just got an enthusiasm for the game that’s just amazing.

“15-year-old, a bright future ahead of him. I’m super excited by his talent, but the most important thing is that he keeps developing, and he’s in the U18 team, and he’s doing fantastically well, but he’s still got lots to learn.

“The world is his oyster and he just needs to go on his journey and his time will come in due course. But for just now, it’s a little bit early I think, and I think a lot of people would agree with me.”

United invited Gabriel and his family into the Old Trafford directors’ box to watch the opening game of the season against Arsenal. He was subsequently introduced to Ruben Amorim at Carrington.

The head of United’s academy, Stephen Torpey, recently admitted he was excited by Gabriel, adding: “We have some special talents right now in our groups, and JJ is one of those, for sure.”

Both teenagers found the net on Saturday as Manchester United’s Under-18s beat Blackburn 3-0, further fuelling excitement among supporters who see them as future first-team prospects. But despite the rising hype, those closest to their journeys are urging restraint.

Carrick, United’s interim head coach, has already highlighted the need for patience with 15-year-old Gabriel. He stressed that while the club rates him highly, careful development is key to managing both his talent and the attention that comes with it.

“JJ is a big talent. We obviously think an awful lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development,” Carrick said earlier this month.

Rooney, United’s all-time leading scorer with 253 goals, has taken a similar stance regarding his son Kai. Speaking to former team-mate Gary Neville, he made it clear it is far too early to predict whether the 16-year-old will follow the same path he took to the top.

“You never know. I think he’s shown potential and good signs,” Rooney Sr said. “He’ll be at United for the next two years and that’s when they make decisions on you so we’ll have to just wait and see.”

Man United’s U18s are locked in a title battle with neighbours Manchester City for the U18 Premier League crown, and their latest win over Blackburn only strengthened their push. Gabriel opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Kai doubled their lead shortly after coming on from the bench. Jim Thwaites then wrapped up the victory with a stunning free-kick.

Gabriel has been the U18s’ star this season, scoring 21 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions. Although still too young for Premier League action, he has already trained with the first team on several occasions – an indication of how highly he is rated within the club.

“What he’s done when he’s trained, he’s done well as you’d expect and it’s good to have the younger players come up with us,” Carrick said. “He’s doing really well.”

United have been keen to show Gabriel a pathway to the first-team – and the youngster and his family were invited into the Old Trafford directors’ box for the opening game of the season against Arsenal.

Kai, meanwhile, has drawn attention of his own after rising rapidly through the academy ranks. Like Gabriel, he is among the youngest players featuring regularly at U18 level, underlining just how highly both are regarded.

Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has caught the eye of Marcus Rashford with his performances for the Under-18s

It hasn’t taken long for JJ Gabriel to come good on his promise as a young footballer. Former Manchester United academy graduate Marcus Rashford tipped the teenager to become a future star and believes he’s already there – despite still waiting on a senior debut.

Gabriel, who turned 15 in October, isn’t allowed to play Premier League football until next season due to competition rules on the age of players. He has already trained with the first-team squad under Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick, though, while continuing to score for fun while turning out for United’s Under-18s.

In April 2025, Gabriel became the youngest player to turn out for the Under-18 side. It didn’t take long for him to also become their youngest scorer, bagging a brace after coming off the bench against Leeds.

At the time, Rashford was on loan at Aston Villa. This didn’t stop him from commenting on the teenager’s post celebrating his achievement, though, writing “”Future star” and adding a star emoji.

Since that goalscoring debut, Gabriel has gone from strength to strength. He has scored 18 goals in 19 matches in the Under-18 Premier League this season and also became United’s youngest FA Youth Cup scorer when he netted the winner against Peterborough on his debut in the competition.

Rashford, who is spending this season with Barcelona, has kept tabs on the youngster. Gabriel shared photos of himself training with the first-team yet again, prompting the England international to write: “Lil bro is a star” – losing that ‘future’ qualifier already.

Gabriel and Rashford have very different tasks awaiting them this week. The former will be out to fire United into the FA Youth Cup semi-finals when they face Sunderland on Wednesday while the latter is in action for Barcelona against Newcastle in the Champions League.

Earlier this season, United interim boss Carrick spoke about bringing Gabriel in for first-team training sessions. “He is not allowed [to be part of a first-team squad on a matchday]. He’s too young,” he said.

“JJ’s doing really well. We’ve got some really good players in the academy and we try and get the younger players up [with the main group] as much as we can.”

He added: “We’re always trying to give them (academy prospects) that exposure. JJ is a big talent, it is pretty obvious and he has had a good season for the Under-18s. We think an awful lot of him.

“But patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and developing him and picking the right moment to step up, to leave them in a certain place. He’s trained well and it is good to have young players up.”

Arsenal academy sensation Max Dowman made history on Saturday night as he became the youngest ever goalscorer in Premier League history in the Gunners’ 2-0 lead over Everton.

The midfielder came off the bench and at 16 years and 73 days and wrote his name into the history books. He broke the record previously held by former Toffees striker James Vaughan, who was 16 years and 270 days old when he scored against Crystal Palace in 2005.

This season, Dowman has become the youngest player ever to play in the Champions League, the youngest player to start a match for Arsenal and the youngest player to feature for the Gunners in the FA Cup.

Dowman’s heroics over the weekend have resulted in fans talking up potential names who could follow the 16-year-old and break the record. As expected, Manchester United’s JJ Gabriel is one player with huge excitement around him.

However, the talented teenager will have to wait until he makes his senior debut given he is ineligible to play Premier League or Premier League 2 football until next season. Rules mean that because he was 14 when the current campaign started, he is not permitted to make an appearance.

Gabriel has scored 20 goals in 22 games for Darren Fletcher’s Under-18s this season, with him tipped to become a success at senior level. While nobody will want to pile the pressure on the youngster, there is a date that he will have to score by in the Premier League to overtake Dowman.

With him turning 16 on October 5 this year, the 15-year-old will have until December 19 to find the back of the net in the Premier League to become the youngest-ever goalscorer.

United interim head coach Carrick revealed he was well-aware of Gabriel’s talent, but seemed keen to play down the hype around him. “He’s doing really well, JJ,” he said.

“We’ve got some really good young players in the academy and we try and get the younger players up as much as we can. We’re always trying to give that exposure to the players to come and train and feel it. JJ is a big talent, it’s pretty obvious to know that, and he’s had a really good season for the under-18s.

“We obviously think an awful lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development as we do with all the different age groups and younger players and picking the right moment to step up, picking the moment to leave them in a certain place and ups and downs.

“When he’s trained, he’s done well, as you’d expect, and it’s good to have the younger players come up with us.”

JJ Gabriel already carries a great deal of pressure on his shoulders despite being just 15 years of age.

Luckily for him, the Manchester United wonderkid is at a club which has developed a plethora of other talents in the past, allowing them to go from academy prospects to genuine world beaters. Gabriel is currently one of the most exciting youngsters at Carrington, having been a revelation for the Under-18s this season despite his tender age.

He has even been called up to train with the first-team by Michael Carrick and his predecessor Ruben Amorim this season. However, the London-born forward will have to stay patient before earning his first minutes under Carrick, given he is ineligible to play Premier League or Premier League 2 football until next season.

And while there is no doubting his quality, there are certain traits Gabriel still needs to develop and rules he needs to adhere to in order to guarantee his inclusion in the first team, just as the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo did before him.

Former United captain Roy Keane previously explained how a player, even one as gifted as Gabriel, cannot be labelled world class unless they manage to play at a consistently high level for many years. Keane lifted almost every trophy there was to win during his time as skipper and will know very well what it takes to be a world class player.

The pundit believes very few of his former team-mates managed to reach those heights due to a lack of consistency – a crucial lesson for Gabriel if he ever hopes to become a world class player himself.

The Irishman used his former team-mate Ryan Giggs as an example, saying: “If I look back now, you’d have to class Giggsy. I always class the world-class players as lads who were doing it for nine, 10, 11 [years] – obviously, Giggsy’s done it for a lot longer. To me, that’s the key to being a really good player: you’ve got to be consistent.”

Giggs himself has explained what it takes to make it through the United academy and become a star previously, by recalling his own journey and mindset. The Welshman, who has more Premier League titles than any other player in history, came through the ranks with the famous Class of ‘92, who each went on to become important first-team players.

The winger revealed the key trait that made each of them successful was a fire in their belly to win and to constantly improve. He recalled how he and his young team-mates were so competitive on the training ground that they often played on the edge of what could be deemed acceptable.

“When I was growing up in the youth team literally I would do anything to win a five-a-side game, against my best friends in Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, we’d be kicking each other and if you lost it would be with you for the rest of the day and this is the day before the game, an eight-minute, nine-minute five-a-side game,” Giggs told beIN SPORTS.

“Whereas in my experience now you see players coming off and they’ve just lost a small-sided game and they’re laughing and joking and I’m like ‘you’ve just lost a game’. Even if it doesn’t mean anything, it’s that winning mentality and doing anything you can to win.

“My youth team coach, Eric Harrison, I can’t remember him giving free-kicks. He would just let you get on with it, you don’t want injuries but he wanted that will to win and he wanted that feeling you’d take into the Saturday. Maybe that’s taken away from the players a little bit now, but you have to find that winning mentality from within somehow. Sir Alex was the master of mind games and psychology.”

Gary Neville has perhaps been the most outspoken about what it takes for an academy youngster to break into the first team at United. The former right-back even created a list of 14 key bits of advice for young players to adhere to, which used to hang in the academy changing room.

Neville’s list was made up of the following commandments:

1. Choose who you follow.

2. Give 100 per cent all the time. You have never arrived at Manchester United so you must maintain a high standard all the time, every day.

3. Always remember why you began to play football — you loved it for its own sake and not as a means to get money, fame, girls, cars etc.

4. Ownership and responsibility — take care of your own affairs thus learning to do things for yourself, and not relying on others to do things for you: bank accounts, passports and so on. Make your own decisions!

5. Analyse and assess your own performance — be your own coach.

6. Have a strong work ethic — work harder than anyone else and you’ll overtake players with far more talent than you have.

7. Give the profession all that you have got, and you’ll have no regrets.

8. You have to have character and personality to play for Manchester United which you can develop over time.

9. Be a risk taker because it is a different kind of leadership.

10. Success and failure are two sides of the same coin, and you have to deal emotionally with both experiences. Remember that if you win or lose you can still have that Chinese on a Saturday night — keep things in perspective.

11. Learn more about yourself and what works for you.

12. Don’t leave anything to chance.

13. There are different routes to reach the top and very few players go ‘route one’ — like Giggs or [Wayne] Rooney. The challenge for you is to find the right pathway because we’re all different.

14. The ability to deal/cope with injuries is vital and should be approached with a strong mentality. See injury as an opportunity to develop body strength, and ‘reset’ your mind (refresh) for the various challenges ahead.

Manchester United youth star JJ Gabriel continues to impress for the Under-18s while he is made to wait for a first-team chance

Manchester United are benefiting from a weekend break following their early exit from the FA Cup. The 2024 winners were knocked out by Brighton in the third round, whilst top-four rivals Liverpool and Chelsea have both faced additional fixtures to put extra miles in their legs.

Michael Carrick’s squad also have no midweek commitments, having missed out on European qualification this season thanks to their Europa League final defeat. This means that by the time they take on Aston Villa on March 15, they’ll have enjoyed more than a week without a match.

Victory over Unai Emery’s side could prove pivotal in the race for Champions League football. United and Villa are tied on points in third and fourth positions respectively, with Chelsea trailing the duo by just three points and Liverpool still in the mix.

Whatever unfolds between now and May has a chance of significantly influencing United’s managerial strategy and transfer activity. Here are the latest developments from around Old Trafford.

Gabriel continues scoring streak

Manchester United prodigy JJ Gabriel delivered another standout performance on Saturday. The youngster was on target twice as United’s Under-18s thrashed Nottingham Forest, making the case for a first team chance when he becomes eligible to play Premier League football next season.

Gabriel’s opener arrived eight minutes before the interval when his strike from distance appeared to catch a deflection en route to the top corner. His second goal was even better with the teenager giving Forest defenders short shrift before bending a shot high beyond the goalkeeper’s reach.

Jay McEvoy, Louie Bradbury and Noah Ajayi were also on the scoresheet in a 5-2 victory for Darren Fletcher’s side. Gabriel has now netted 16 times in 18 league matches this campaign despite only celebrating his 15th birthday in October.

Luis Enrique backed

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has heaped praise on Luis Enrique. The Paris Saint-Germain manager is amongst those who have been touted for the Old Trafford position should Michael Carrick not be handed the role on a permanent basis, although he could still choose to prolong his tenure in France.

“Luis Enrique would be a dream coach for Man United,” Evra told Stake as he offered his assessment of the ex-Spain and Barcelona boss. “I love the man, I love his philosophy, what he went through in his personal life and overcame it shows his personality.

“The job he’s done at PSG by bringing them a Champions League without Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe or Neymar, it’s a fantastic job. Players would have to work really hard to play for Man United, they’ll have to run a lot and I think Enrique would bring that.”

PSG have a big test against English opposition in midweek as they take on Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash. They prepared for the game with defeat, though, losing at home to Monaco on Friday night.

JJ Gabriel has been making strides for Manchester United at age group level to catch the eye of Michael Carrick

Manchester United prodigy JJ Gabriel won’t be able to make his debut for the team this season due to Premier League rules. However, it could have been a different story had the team not suffered an early elimination from the FA Cup.

Players need to have turned 15 before August 31 in order to be registered for first team action in the Premier League this season. This means October-born Gabriel missed out by a matter of weeks.

The rules are different for the FA Cup, though, where no such age restrictions apply. The issue for Gabriel in that competition is United’s early elimination, with caretaker manager Darren Fletcher overseeing a third round defeat to Brighton.

Had they remained in the competition under new interim boss Michael Carrick, though, an opportunity might have presented itself to Gabriel. According to GiveMeSport, Carrick would have considered using the teenager in later rounds to give him a first taste of senior action.

Gabriel has already trained with the first team, both under Carrick and under United’s last permanent manager Ruben Amorim. Both bosses have been willing to give minutes to academy stars in the league, with Amorim handing several substitute appearances to Jack Fletcher and Carrick giving the midfielder’s twin brother Tyler his debut.

Carrick has also watched Gabriel and his Under-18s colleagues in action in the FA Youth Cup. The 2010-born star became United’s youngest ever scorer in the competition when he netted the winner over Peterborough in round three and also scored in a victory at Oxford in the round of 16.

He had already reached double figures for goals in the Under-18 Premier League before that trip to Oxford. Highlights include a pair of hat-tricks, including one in a crushing 7-0 victory away at Liverpool.

United’s first team are unbeaten in six games under Carrick, all of them in the Premier League. Their most recent defeat was that cup tie against Brighton in January, when their former player Danny Welbeck scored for Brighton in a 2-1 Seagulls win.

Another of United’s academy stars was given minutes in that game, with Shea Lacey brought on for the final half-hour. However, the 18-year-old’s day ended early when he was sent off for a second yellow card.

“He’s disappointed because he cares and he understands and he knows he will learn from it,” caretaker boss Fletcher said after the game. “There is no doubt about his talent and it was a steep learning curve today but we believe in Shea. He’s one of our most exciting young prospects and I’m sure at Old Trafford he will have a chance to make amends for that in the future.”
