Trump’s World Cup ‘safety’ warning sparks backlash as Iran questions USA’s credibility, FIFA stays mum

FIFA remains missing as US President Donald Trump issues ‘safety’ warning to the Iranian football team ahead of the World Cup in the States and the Asian federation hits back at the politician.

Iran football team has hit out at the United States of America (USA) President Donald Trump after the politician issued a veiled threat to the Asian team if they participated in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the North American country. Iran are scheduled to play two group matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.

But the ongoing war between Iran and the US has changed the dynamics. Amid the geopolitical tension, US President Trump said on Thursday that while the Iranian soccer ‌team was welcome to participate in the FIFA World Cup, it was not appropriate that they be there “for their own life and safety”.

“The Iran national soccer team is welcome to the World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” Trump said on Truth Social.

Iran lash out at Trump’s ‘safety’ warning for 2026 World Cup

Hitting out at Trump for trying to threaten its football team, the Iranian Football Association (FFIRI) said late on Thursday that the United States must be stripped of hosting rights for the FIFA World Cup as it could not guarantee the safety of players.

“The World Cup is a historic and international event and its governing body is FIFA — not any individual or country,” the Iranian Football Association said in an Instagram Story.

“Iran’s national team, with strength and a series of decisive victories achieved by the brave sons of Iran, was among the first teams to qualify for this major tournament. Certainly, no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup; the only country that could be excluded is on that merely carries the title of “host” yet lacks the ability to provide security for the teams participating in this global event.”

FIFA stays mum as Trump threatens Iran

Trump later clarified that any threat to Iranian players at the FIFA World Cup would not come from the ‌United States.

“It will be the Greatest and Safest Sporting Event in American History,” he said in a latest Truth Social post. “All Players, Officials, and Fans will be treated like the “STARS” that they are!”

It has to be noted that Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali has already officially said that the country
would not take part in the World Cup amid its ongoing war with the US.

Iran’s withdrawal from the World Cup is going to be a first in modern-day football, but governing body FIFA has not clarified who will replace Iran, nor has it rebuked Trump for his recent comments.

President Donald Trump suggested on Thursday (March 12, 2026) that Iran’s national soccer team should withdraw from the upcoming FIFA World Cup as a personal safety measure.

Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social, the social media ‌platform he owns, that Iran is welcome to play this summer in the United States, “but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Each of ‌Iran’s three group stage matches is scheduled to take place on American soil.

The Iranians open Group G ‌play in Inglewood, Calif., against New Zealand on June 15 ‌and Belgium on June 21. They are slated to face Egypt on June 26 in Seattle.

The U.S. and Israel initiated war with Iran on Feb. 28 with a series of airstrikes that killed the longtime Iranian supreme leader, Ali ‌Khameini, and other officials.

Iran’s national sports minister, Ahmad Donyamali, reportedly told state television this week that the country could not participate in the World Cup following Khameini’s death.

The White House did ‌not immediately explain the reference to “safety” in Mr. Trump’s post, which seemed to conflict with what he said in a recent meeting with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

“President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States,” Mr. Infantino wrote ‌in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

“We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever, and I sincerely thank the President of the United States for his support, as it shows once again that Football Unites the World.”

The 48-team World Cup, the largest ‌in tournament history, runs from June 11 to July 19 in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Iran planned to train in Tucson, Ariz., before the group stage.

Ranked No. 20 in the world, the Iranians qualified for the World Cup for the fourth consecutive time last March as one of the top sides in the Asian Football Confederation. They were ‌eliminated from the group stage in 2022 with a 1-0 loss to the U.S. in Doha, Qatar.

Iranian athletes and coaches are exempt from the travel ban Mr. Trump imposed against their country last June.

Iran’s sports and youth minister said it’s “not possible” for the country to take part in the World Cup after the United States killed its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in its ongoing war.

Iran was expected to take part in the World Cup that will be held across North America in June, but Iranian Sports and Youth Minister Ahmad Donyamali told state television that his country’s soccer team players are not safe in the U.S., according to a video of the interview posted on Tuesday (March 10, 2026).

“Due to the wicked acts they have done against Iran — they have imposed two wars on us over just eight or nine months and have killed and martyred thousands of our people — definitely it’s not possible for us to take part in the World Cup,” he said.

Iran is scheduled to play in Inglewood, California, against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21 before finishing group play against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The U.S. is hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

FIFA said Tuesday night (March 10, 2026) that it anticipates Iran’s national team will be allowed to come to the United States.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump said “I really don’t care” if Iran takes part in the 48-nation tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he met with Trump on Tuesday night (March 10, 2026) “to discuss the status of preparations” for the tournament and received assurances that Iran would be permitted to come to the U.S.

Iran to skip FIFA World Cup 2026 after US attacks? Football federation chief responds

The US and Israeli attacks on Iran have put the participation of the West Asian country in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in doubt. Iran’s football chief has now reacted to the matter.

Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 has become uncertain after the United States and Israel launched an attack in the West Asian country, killing its supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. Iran are part of Group G in the FIFA World Cup along with New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.

No Iran in FIFA World Cup 2026?

The president of Iran’s football federation has declared that the national team most likely won’t take part in the football World Cup.

“What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Mehdi Taj told sports portal Varzesh3.

The US-Israeli strikes on Iran continued for a second day on Sunday after the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threw the future of the Islamic Republic into uncertainty and raised the risk of regional instability.

The US is hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

Fans from Iran were already banned from entering the US in the first iteration of the travel ban announced by the Trump administration.

FIFA is yet to react to the uncertainty over Iran’s participation in the World Cup.
