With the Indian Premier League 2026 set to begin in just six days, all eyes are once again on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The Rajasthan Royals prodigy, who turns 15 this Friday, returns after a spectacular debut last year when he smashed a 35-ball century against Gujarat Giants, leaving fans and bowlers stunned. That innings made him the youngest centurion in IPL history and the fastest Indian to reach three figures, surpassing Yusuf Pathan’s record.Sooryavanshi’s rise has been meteoric. During the IPL mega auction for the 2025 season, he secured a deal worth Rs 1.1 crore with Rajasthan Royals, making him the youngest player ever to be signed. Over the past year, he has dominated across continents, scoring centuries in Australia, South Africa, and England. His crowning moment came in the Under-19 World Cup final against England, where he scored a match-winning 175 off just 80 balls, including 15 fours and six sixes each. His 55-ball century is among the fastest in Under-19 World Cup history, helping India lift the trophy for a sixth time. But as IPL 2026 approaches, Sooryavanshi faces new challenges. Bowlers are believed to have studied his game and will look to expose weaknesses. His talent is unquestionable, and many see him as a potential trailblazer and future legend. Yet, not everyone is convinced about his professional approach. On AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel, Jitesh Sharma, who captained Sooryavanshi during India A’s Asia Cup campaign last year, praised the youngster’s skill but expressed doubts about his off-field habits. “Right now, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. I feel he can dominate world cricket. He has gear No. 6 and a very good set of skills,” Sharma said when asked which youngster he would invest in.De Villiers, who watched Sooryavanshi’s 175-run masterclass in the Under-19 World Cup final, was full of admiration. “He’s a great player. I watched him in the Under-19s. It’s not always easy when you get the taste of IPL and big cricket, and still show the same kind of standard. I was very impressed with the way he played in that World Cup. Very professional. He’s very mature for his age,” said the former South African captain.De Villiers added that Sooryavanshi stayed true to his game plan, replicating the approach he used in the IPL, without arrogance or trying to be someone else. “But he will get professional,” he said.Sharma, however, was more sceptical. “He’s not professional. I can tell you that. Everyone is trying to get him to be professional, but I don’t think he will ever get professional. He may be on the field, but off the field, he won’t. I’m trying my best. I ask him not to have ice-cream in the night,” he added.

MUMBAI: The cricketing fraternity, today, acknowledges Hardik Pandya as one of the finest white-ball allrounders in the game, but when Mumbai Indians first spotted him in domestic cricket, he was just a hardworking youngster from Baroda, who only knew how to bat. Recounting his journey at a fireside chat with MI batting coach Kieron Pollard during the ‘MI MIX’ fan event at Jio World Garden on Sunday, Pandya said his rise was shaped by hard work and MI’s sharp scouting system.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!“Before I played for Mumbai Indians, I was just a pure batter for 17-19 years. The only thing I knew was hard work — if someone told me to run 12 rounds, I would run 15,” Pandya said, recalling his early days in domestic cricket. The turning point came during a Ranji Trophy match when MI scouts noticed him — almost by chance. “I was playing a Ranji game, and the scouts had not even come to watch me. That’s the beauty of the Mumbai Indians’ scouting system. They identified something special even when they were not there specifically for me. That shows the strength of their system,” he said.Pandya joined MI in 2015 as a young prospect and gradually transformed himself into a match-winning allrounder. The 32-year-old admitted that the transition from a pure batter to an allrounder was not an easy one and required him to adapt significantly, especially in terms of fitness and body management.“I had to adapt. I had no idea how to look after my body or what it takes to be an allrounder. The only thing I knew was to work hard, and that helped me come out of difficult phases,” he said, urging young cricketers to be disciplined. Now set to lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 for the third year in-a-row, Pandya made his ambitions clear — win a sixth Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the franchise.“My ultimate dream is to win the IPL for the sixth time for MI. The franchise already has an amazing legacy, but I want us to play the best cricket Mumbai Indians have ever played and win as many trophies as possible,” he said drawing loud cheers from fans, who he praised for their unconditional support through good times and bad.Pollard, who has watched Pandya’s journey from close quarters, credited him for inspiring the next generation of players at MI. “The bravery and youthful exuberance of the young players excite me. When Hardik came into the setup, he worked hard and produced results on the field. The next generation is seeing that and coming in fearless — that’s what Mumbai Indians are all about,” Pollard said.

‘IPL 2026 is likely to be MS Dhoni’s last’: Former CSK star makes big prediction | Cricket News – The Times of India

‘IPL 2026 is likely to be MS Dhoni’s last’: Former CSK star makes big prediction | Cricket News – The Times of India

The future of MS Dhoni in the IPL has once again become a major talking point after former India cricketer Robin Uthappa suggested that IPL 2026 could mark the end of Dhoni’s illustrious career with Chennai Super Kings. Speaking on JioHotstar’s TATA IPL: Out or Out of the Park, Uthappa offered a detailed perspective on Dhoni’s evolving role, leadership transition within CSK, and what the upcoming season could mean for the franchise icon.According to Uthappa, Dhoni’s role in the upcoming season is expected to evolve significantly. Rather than being a central on-field figure, he could take a step back and operate more as a guide for Ruturaj as Captain.“I don’t think CSK should hand over the leadership duties to Sanju Samson. You have to give Ruturaj Gaikwad time to settle as captain. He has been leading the team since 2024. No matter what people say, he is coming out of the shadow of MS Dhoni. You want him to come out completely and stand in his own light. You want to see what he can produce. You want him to lead the team when MS is not playing and stand on his own, without that overwhelming feeling of always being under that energy. So I think you can see Dhoni being a little more hands-off,” Uthappa said Uthappa made a bold and emotional prediction about Dhoni’s future, indicating that the 2026 season could be his farewell. The statement has immediately sparked conversations among fans, as Dhoni, one of the greatest captains in IPL history edges closer to the final phase of his playing career.“IPL 2026 is likely to be his last year in the yellow jersey. I see him playing more of a mentor-cum-player role this year. I don’t see him batting at number seven. I see him batting at number eight. Knowing that he is on his way out, he wants to wean himself out. I think he will do that. Only then will we see the true potential of Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain. Give him a few years. If it doesn’t work, you always have Sanju Samson in the team to handle the captaincy duties.” Robin on dhoni’s role in CSK

MS Dhoni in IPL 2025

MS Dhoni’s IPL 2025 season was a mix of evolving responsibility, flashes of brilliance, and growing questions about his role in a transitioning Chennai Super Kings setup. Dhoni entered IPL 2025 primarily as a finisher and wicketkeeper, with reduced batting responsibility compared to his prime years. However, his role changed mid-season when captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to injury, forcing Dhoni to step back into leadership duties. As captain, Dhoni was responsible for guiding a struggling CSK side through a difficult campaign, balancing leadership with his limited batting role lower down the order. Dhoni mostly batted in the lower order (No. 7 or below), often coming in during the final overs. His role was not to build innings but to provide quick cameos and finish games.

Wicketkeeping Excellence Continues

Even at 43, Dhoni continued to shine behind the stumps. He achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first wicketkeeper to reach 200 dismissals in IPL history, reinforcing his legacy as one of the greatest keepers in the league. However, with the inclusion of Sanju Samson wicket-keeping duties might be handed over to him.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, batter Shreyas Iyer opened up about a tough phase in his career after suffering a serious spleen injury during the Australia tour. The injury forced him into hospital and led to significant weight loss. “It’s always challenging to come back after an injury. I had lost around 7 kg due to the injury, it was a severe one. Thankfully, I was back in good shape after two months. But gaining those 7 kg back took a lot of effort. I enjoy challenges, and that was one I had to overcome. I’m glad I came through that phase and am back representing my team, and also having represented India in the previous series. I feel proud of myself,” Iyer told reporters in the pre-season press conference.

Despite the setback, Iyer worked hard to regain his fitness and return to competitive cricket. He resumed playing as Mumbai’s captain in domestic cricket and had mixed results afterwards, including a modest ODI series against New Zealand. Still, his focus remained on improving and leading from the front. Speaking again about his recovery, he said, “It is always challenging to come back after an injury. I had lost around seven kilos, and it took a lot of effort to gain that weight back. But I love challenges. I am glad I overcame that part of my life, and I am back here proudly representing the team.” Now leading Punjab Kings, Iyer is fully focused on winning the IPL trophy. “Expectations are high, which is fun. I love the challenge. But the important thing is that whenever we step in, we have to win. My eye is on the trophy,” he added. He emphasised team bonding off the field, saying, “This is the period where we live as a family for two months,” and highlighted how spending time together helps performance.Teammate Arshdeep Singh echoed the positive energy, saying, “When you feel the pressure, it is a privilege.”

NEW DELHI: As the cricket world gears up for IPL 2026, one of the tournament’s most iconic “bromances” is back in the spotlight. AB de Villiers, the legendary South African batter and former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart, has made a candid admission regarding his first impression of former captain Virat Kohli. While the duo eventually became the most feared batting pair in T20 history, De Villiers revealed that it wasn’t exactly “friendship at first sight”. Speaking about their early encounters on Mbangwa Media YouTube channel, the man known as Mr. 360 confessed that Kohli’s initial demeanour rubbed him the wrong way.“I didn’t initially like him a lot, to be honest. He was a bit cocky, you know, and I’ve told him that before. I’ve said it in many interviews. We sort of laugh at that now,” De Villiers remarked.

However, the Proteas legend was quick to clarify that this perceived arrogance was actually a mirror image of his own personality. “Why I say cocky is because I probably saw a similar kind of thing that I have in him; it’s that competitive drive,” he added. “It’s that thing that you’re born with, that I don’t like losing, nothing is going to change that. So I probably saw that in Virat initially when I met him.”The ice began to melt as the two spent more time together on the international circuit. De Villiers noted that beneath the aggressive exterior was a cricketer driven by a profound sense of duty to his team.“Then in the second or third meeting, getting to hear his voice and hear him speak, I’m like, oh okay, he’s also just human, you know, just a nice guy who’s got a deep drive of wanting to perform and win games of cricket for his country,” he added. The foundation of their legendary RCB partnership was actually laid during a tense Test match at the Wanderers after RCB picked Kohli. Despite being in the heat of an international battle, Kohli reached out to his future teammate.“And I remember in that tunnel, he came up to me, he’s like, ‘I’m glad you’re on our team.’ And we sort of vibed, like we’re going to be good friends. In the middle of a Test match, we would hardly ever speak to each other, and he just went like, ‘Yes, I’m so glad we got you.’ I’m like, okay, this guy actually likes me, we can maybe be mates,” De Villiers recalled

Rana’s injury has further complicated KKR’s pace-bowling plans, with the team still evaluating replacements.

Bravo backs India’s fast-bowling depth

Despite the setbacks, KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo struck an optimistic tone, highlighting India’s growing pool of fast bowlers.“In any tournament with any team, once you lose some of the key bowling options, these are things you plan for, but also things you have to accept. The good thing about Indian cricket, especially at the moment, is that there is a lot of depth,” Bravo Said“So there are some guys, as the coach mentioned, that we are definitely looking at to fill the spot – the likes of Umran Malik. These guys are also players who have represented the national team at some point in time and have also played in the IPL before. They are young, exciting talents. Also, I can’t forget Vaibhav – what a fantastic season last year. He’s been the leader of the attack over the last two seasons as well. So, yes, we’ve lost some key players, but I feel comfortable [knowing that] we have what it takes to replace those guys,” Bravo stated confidence.KKR also have additional pace options in Akash Deep and Kartik Tyagi, giving them flexibility despite the injuries.

He’s grown a lot as a cricketer over the years, so it’s not easy to replace him.”He added that the team management is actively exploring replacement options: “Having said that, over the last few days, we’ve looked at a few bowlers. We’re trying to evaluate, with the help of the leadership group, who fits in and who can do that role to the best of their prowess, we’re still evaluating that and haven’t made that decision yet, but hopefully we’ll identify someone soon who can make a difference to this squad.

NEW DELHI: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes Kohli’s transition to playing fewer formats might impact his T20 rhythm, especially after breaks.“This time, things will be a little different for Kohli. For the first time, he will play the IPL having completely retired from Test cricket. He is playing only one format. It is not easy for anyone,” Pathan said in a video on his YouTube channel.

“But he has scored, and his performance has been brilliant. With Kohli now retired from Test cricket and only playing limited formats, expectations are high, but experts feel the shift could bring new challenges in T20 cricket.“In T20S, when you play the aggressor and come in not having played a lot, it will be challenging. But he has faced many challenges before as well. I am very excited to see how he will go forward this season,” he added.Pathan also highlighted how Kohli’s change in batting style last season played a big role in RCB’s success. Instead of anchoring the innings, Kohli took a more attacking role, which helped the team win the title.“Virat Kohli and RCB is an identity that goes together. He started with RCB and is still playing for them. He has delivered brilliant performances. It was also a golden period in his career when he captained the team; there were a lot of brilliant performances,” he noted.“When they won last season, his strike rate also went up. He did not play anchor but took the role of an aggressor. It was a very big factor. They will expect even this time that he keeps up the same form.”

Sanju Samson (Pic credit: CSK)

Just like MS Dhoni did all those years ago, the Kerala cricketer is making a grand entrance to the franchise following his heroics in the T20 World Cup. His first task, however, will be to revive Chennai’s fortunes by being consistent with the bat.It was the game against Zimbabwe in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup. Sanju Samson, who had just made a comeback in India’s playing XI at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, was asked after the match about his “new home”. The reference, of course, was to the wicketkeeperbatter’s transfer to Chennai Super Kings from Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!“I’m really excited about it, but right now I have other priorities. When the time comes, I’ll be looking forward to it,” Sanju said.Following that game, Samson went on to play three match-winning knocks for India in the next three games, winning the player of the tournament award as India won the World Cup. Now, he comes to Chennai as the toast of the nation as another IPL season beckons.

Shashi Tharoor & Samson’s Redemption Story: From Setbacks to Glory

It is similar to the way MS Dhoni made a grand arrival in Chennai as CSK captain all those years ago after leading India to the 2007 T20 World Cup title. That time too, the franchise bosses hadn’t missed a chance to cash in on Dhoni’s growing popularity. It was a move that shaped the history of CSK and IPL.Now, as the sun is about to set on Dhoni’s long career, there’s a new hero emerging. No, Sanju isn’t the new CSK skipper. He doesn’t even have the responsibility of establishing the franchise as a brand. But there’s another challenge for the Rajinikath fan from Kerala — to reestablish the supremacy of CSK as a powerhouse in the IPL.The last couple of years have been wretched for the five-time champions. They’ve been unable to make the lastfour stage of the tournament. Though the fans still troop to Chepauk on match day just to catch a glimpse of Dhoni hitting a couple of sixes or showing his skill with the gloves, there’s been a growing sense of frustration about the team’s performance.

Sanju Samson in the IPL

The move to draft Sanju in was, in fact, a little bit of a desperate move to get CSK’s house in order. They had flirted with a couple of other established Indian names as Dhoni’s longterm wicketkeeper batter replacement in the past years, but those moves hadn’t exactly materialised. Once it was clear after last season that Sanju wanted to leave RR, CSK didn’t want to miss the chance. The Super Kings have been missing the firepower at the top of the order and Samson does solve a few riddles. As per indications, Sanju will open the batting with Ayush Mhatre while skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad will come in at No. 3. The right-hander, whose best year in IPL for Rajasthan Royals was in 2024 when he scored 531 runs at a strike-rate of 153.46, will look to recreate similar magic in his first year for his new franchise. What may just work for Sanju in Chennai is the fact that he will be coming to this IPL as a man free of any burden. For years, he has been trying to prove himself as an international cricketer. In the past, it has always been at the back of his mind that a poor IPL might curtail his India dreams. After the recent heroics in the T20 World Cup, though, those fears would have eased. Sanju has nothing left to prove to cement his India place. Given the nature of his free-flowing batting style, that easing of pressure can give him the freedom to express himself and give CSK those rollicking starts day in and day out. While that’s one part of the deal, the 31-year-old has to take care of the wicketkeeping responsibilities as well. It’s almost an open secret that this will be Dhoni’s last year. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has indicated that the legend may not be playing all the games. In all probability, Sanju will keep wickets in most of the games, unless of course the team needs Dhoni’s onfield tactical acumen to wriggle out of a tough corner. Sanju, on his part, has already spoken to Dhoni about how to go about the job.“I’ve spoken to Mahi bhai over the phone and interacted with him. Playing with him as part of a team will be great. I see it as an opportunity to learn from him,” Samson told reporters after the World Cup triumph. “Whenever he calls or we meet, there is always something positive to take away. But being with him in a team for two months and seeing first-hand how he approaches cricket and prepares for games will be a huge benefit for me,” Sanju added.Taking over from Dhoni the icon, especially in Chennai, entails going beyond the cricket field. The 42-yearold, over the last two decades, has become a cultural beacon, ‘Thala’ to his legions of fans . To Sanju’s advantage, he already has a strong fan base in the city, courtesy a big Malayali population in Chennai. Many of them used to be Rajasthan Royals fans but have started shifting allegiance now. The fact that Sanju speaks the local language and has been coming to the city since he was kid will help him grow an immediate connection with the Tamil population. But then, to win them over and create an aura that comes close to Dhoni’s will need one crucial component — performance. After the World Cup, there’s a growing belief in Chennai that the mild-mannered cricketer will deliver as expected. The ball is well and truly in Sanju’s court.
