NEW DELHI: Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin heaped praise on Ricky Ponting for a decisive team selection call after Punjab Kings edged past Gujarat Titans in a tense IPL 2026 clash, stating that the legendary Australian “once again proved right.”Punjab secured a narrow three-wicket win, but it was the impact of lesser-expected contributors that caught Ashwin’s attention. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin admitted he had initially questioned the decision to include Xavier Bartlett over Azmatullah Omarzai.

“I thought before the start of the game that Azmatullah Omarzai should play. Dude, why is Bartlett playing? But the way Bartlett bowled and batted, Ricky Ponting once again proved right by filling all the overseas slots with Australians,” Ashwin said.Bartlett may not have made a major impact with the ball, returning 0/36 in four overs, but he played a crucial cameo with the bat. Coming in at No. 9, he released pressure in the penultimate over by smashing Prasidh Krishna for a six off his very first ball, shifting momentum back in Punjab’s favour.Connolly’s composure seals the dealWhile Bartlett provided late fireworks, it was young Australian Cooper Connolly who anchored the chase with a mature knock of 72 off 44 balls on his IPL debut, earning the Player of the Match award.

Poll

Was including Xavier Bartlett over Azmatullah Omarzai a good decision?

Ashwin was particularly impressed with the 22-year-old’s temperament under pressure. “This is his first game in the IPL. It isn’t easy. The guy comes from Australia and has never played cricket in India. It wasn’t a bouncy-type wicket; it was a skiddy wicket and he adapted and played a very good innings,” he said.“There was a lot of pressure near the end; even then, he held his nerve and finished the chase well. He is only 22 years old and he performed so well in the BBL that he opened everyone’s eyes,” Ashwin added.Despite a brief collapse triggered by Gujarat, Punjab’s young core and Ponting’s tactical decisions ensured they began their campaign on a winning note, reinforcing Ashwin’s belief that experience in the dugout continues to make a telling difference.

‘Chennai offered double of BCCI’s prize’: Culture that made CSK a champion team | Cricket News – The Times of India

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) remain one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, sharing the record of five titles with Mumbai Indians and boasting 10 final appearances. Their dominance in a fiercely competitive league reflects not just on-field excellence but also a well-structured system built over the years. A major factor behind their sustained success has been the stability provided by the ownership group, which has consistently backed players and maintained a balanced squad.CSK’s philosophy has always revolved around trust and continuity. Unlike many franchises, they have prioritized retaining a strong core group even after auctions, showing long-term faith in their players, support staff, and team environment. This approach has also contributed to nurturing players who go on to perform at the international level. They have shown remarkable consistency not just on the field but also off it, with Stephen Fleming serving as their head coach since 2009. His long-term guidance has been key in building a stable, experienced team, helping CSK maintain a winning culture and remain one of the most dominant IPL franchises.Former India cricketer Abhinav Mukund highlighted another unique aspect of CSK’s culture, their strong backing of players beyond the field. He revealed that the franchise has a long-standing tradition of doubling the prize money offered by the BCCI, regardless of the team’s result, a gesture that reflects their commitment to player welfare. “I think the credit should also go to the management. That time, they clearly told us that whatever prize money BCCI is offering you, whether we are losing or winning, we will double it. And this is a tradition of Chennai from day one. Ask any clear Chennai player, they will say ‘this is a tradition that they have followed’, so at that point it felt like a huge thing,” Mukund said on Doordarshan Sports.

CSK’s unforgettable start in IPL 2026

In their IPL 2026 opener on March 30, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) secured a crushing 8-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati. After RR’s pace attack, led by Nandre Burger (2/26) and Jofra Archer (2/19), dismantled the CSK lineup for a meager 127, 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stole the show by smashing the season’s fastest fifty in just 15 balls. Rajasthan chased down the target in a mere 12.1 overs, finishing at 128/2 to hand CSK a heavy defeat in a match that also featured Sanju Samson’s quiet debut for Chennai and Ravindra Jadeja’s successful two-wicket return to the Royals.

NEW CHANDIGARH: There is a particular sound that has come to define the IPL evening these days — not the applause of a boundary, but the thud of a ball disappearing several rows back, followed by a collective murmur that asks: How far did that go?In this version of T20 cricket, now 200 is not even a par total. For the bowlers, increasingly in the IPL, it feels like survival rather than contest.

The Impact Player rule, Punjab Kings’ Ponting suggested, hasn’t just deepened batting line-ups; it has liberated them. “It’s a really hard thing for the bowlers now,” Ponting said. “The modern T20 batter… they’re big, strong athletes. The bowler has to miss by a couple of inches on line or on length, and they pay the penalty. The ball is going over the fence and it’s going a long way over.ALSO READ: India’s overlooked stars Gill, Iyer in focus as PBKS host GT “The margin for error has shrunk to something almost invisible,” said Gujarat Titans’ Hayden, “Once upon a time in the IPL, the approach was incremental… from taking a single to hitting a six. Now, it is on the other spectrum. Six, four… then maybe a single. It is a reversal not just of order, but of philosophy.”When intent is this absolute, how do you disrupt it? The answers, both coaches agree, are not revolutionary, but old-fashioned and executed with precision.Hayden listed them out like a checklist: wide yorkers, yorkers at the stumps, slower offcutters into the pitch. “Variations are not new, accuracy is everything. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist,” Hayden said, “But you do have to be near-perfect.”Ponting leaned into the tactical. “Change of angles, better use of the bouncer. The search for the unfamiliar — a mystery spinner, perhaps, someone who can buy a few deliveries of doubt in a format that rarely allows it,” he said.

MUMBAI: Australian allrounder Cameron Green, at Rs 25.20 crore, the IPL’s costliest-ever overseas player, is at the centre of a controversy. When the Aussie didn’t bowl a single over in Kolkata Knight Riders’ defeat to Mumbai Indians in Sunday’s high-profile, high-scoring clash at the Wankhede, it raised questions over why KKR splurged so much on an allrounder who was not being called in to bowl.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!After KKR failed to defend 220 and went down by six wickets, captain Ajinkya Rahane further raised hackles in his reply to why Green didn’t bowl. “That question you need to ask Cricket Australia,” said Rahane, indicating that the board may have asked Green to avoid bowling.

In response, Cricket Australia clarified that Green has a lower back injury and that KKR were fully informed about it. “Cameron has a lower back injury, which is being managed but requires him to abstain from bowling for a short period. You would note he also did not bowl in his last Sheffield Shield game for Western Australia due to the same issue,” a CA spokesperson told TOI on Monday. “Cameron is currently rebuilding his bowling loads in India with a view to returning in around 10-12 days. KKR has been communicated with and is fully aware of this information,” the spokesperson added.During the IPL 2026 auction in November last year, Green was registered as a specialist batter instead of an allrounder, sparking concerns around his fitness. Green later clarified it was a clerical error by his manager and that he was fit to bowl in the IPL, triggering a record bid for him. Green was part of Australia’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign, where he bowled just a few overs and on returning home featured in a Sheffield Shield match only as a batter. Across his last eight matches, he has bowled just 7.1 overs. On Sunday, KKR used six bowlers but all proved expensive as MI chased down the target in 19.1 overs for a six-wicket win. At the post-match presentation, Rahane admitted that Green not bowling disrupted KKR’s balance.Former India opener Aakash Chopra criticised the situation, saying it was unfair for a franchise to pay for an allrounder and receive only a batter. “If you pay for an allrounder and get a batsman in return, you should, at the very least, be eligible for a refund,” Chopra wrote on X on Sunday.

Gujarat Titans opener B. Sai Sudharsan’s batting in IPL 2025 was pure poetry in motion.

The southpaw was at his elegant best for a major part of the season and eventually scaled a peak when he bagged the Orange Cap for his 759-run effort.

But the 24-year-old is not resting on past laurels. In fact, Sai Sudharsan, in batting coach Matthew Hayden’s words, is going above and beyond to become better than the near-perfect player he was last term.

“It has been a privilege to watch him and Shubman Gill prepare,” Hayden showered praise on the Tamil Nadu batter.

“As Ricky Ponting said, you do not get better by doing less of something. Sai is a phenomenal example of that. Ponting was one of the hardest-working cricketers during my time. What Sai does would be two times of what Ponting ever did. Sai is one of those guys who has just embraced the evolution,” added the Australian.

Like Sai Sudharsan, his ‘partner in crime’ Gill is hungry to leave a lasting impression.

“Shubman is a very clear thinker of the game, and he brings in a lot of confidence. He also brings a bit of a swagger of the modern generation, which I really enjoy. He is shaping himself and his own destiny. But irrespective of the side he plays for, he is very unselfish,” Hayden said of India’s Test and ODI captain.

If Sai Sudharsan and Gill get going, the opposition bowlers may start scratching their heads.

After the skies threatened to open up, Rajasthan Royals produced a downpour of wickets as Chennai Super Kings was consigned to a disastrous start in the season opener at the ACA-Barsapara Stadium here on Monday (March 30, 2026). The relentless display from the hosts’ bowlers knocked out the visitors for 127.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed a 17-ball 52, with five towering sixes and four crisp fours, as the Riyan Parag-led outfit romped to an eight-wicket win with 47 balls to spare.

Royals drew first blood after opting to bowl. Opener Sanju Samson’s much-anticipated debut ended in a brief stay as he was castled by a peach of a delivery from left-arm seamer Nandre Burger in the second over.

Jofra Archer made it worse for Super Kings when he sent back skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad with a full delivery that crashed into the stumps. Ayush Mhatre fell for a golden duck as a searing short ball from Burger kissed the glove. Super Kings was reeling at 19 for three at that stage.

Impact Player Sarfaraz Khan counterattacked, pulling Burger for a boundary through mid-wicket and lofting a length ball over deep-midwicket.

The introduction of the ever-reliable Sandeep Sharma ended Mathew Short’s stay as he misjudged a loopy delivery and was caught at mid-wicket, leaving Super Kings precariously placed at 41 for four in the PowerPlay.

Debutant Kartik Sharma, who joined Sarfaraz, dispatched leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi over deep square-leg for a maximum. Just as the duo looked to rebuild, Ravindra Jadeja, playing in pink, struck. The left-arm spinner trapped Sarfaraz in front and forced Shivam Dube to mishit to long-off.

Brijesh Sharma, making his debut for Rajasthan, had Kartik leg-before with a full-length delivery. Jamie Overton’s determined knock — 43 (36b, 2×4, 2×6) — pushed Super Kings past the 120-run mark. Once Suryavanshi emerged from the dugout, the result was never in doubt.

No IPL telecast in Bangladesh as JioStar terminates broadcast agreement | Cricket News – The Times of India

JioStar has ended its broadcast agreement with a local partner in Bangladesh, a move that means the Indian Premier League (IPL) will not be shown in the country this season, according to a Reuters report. The earlier ban in Bangladesh on broadcasting IPL followed tensions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released from his contract by Kolkata Knight Riders.“The agreement stands terminated with immediate effect,” a JioStar letter said to Bangladesh broadcaster TSports, as cited by Reuters. The local company had sublicensed IPL rights for the 2023 to 2027 period.JioStar cited financial issues behind the move, stating its partner’s “continued failure and default in adhering to the payment timelines stipulated under the agreement”.The decision also applies to the Women’s Premier League (WPL), with the broadcaster ending arrangements for both tournaments in Bangladesh on similar grounds. The situation unfolds amid strained ties between India and Bangladesh following political changes in Dhaka in August 2024, when former prime minister Sheikh Hasina left the country after a mass uprising. The initial broadcast ban earlier in 2026 was triggered by controversy surrounding Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who had been signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 9.20 crore. The franchise eventually released him following directions from the BCCI.

IPL 2026 | Whenever I play, I only think of becoming a match-winner: Harpreet

‘Harpreet Brar’ and ‘hype’ seldom get mentioned in the same sentence.

The Punjab Kings left-arm spinner has influenced many an IPL match with his miserly spells, especially in the last three seasons. But Harpreet has often flown under the radar as his numbers — 35 wickets in 49 games at 8.03 — do not tell the whole story.

Back in red and blue to quietly go about his business in IPL 2026, the 30-year-old is eager to remain a pivotal piece of the PBKS puzzle.

“I have never paid attention to it (spotlight not being on him), but I have been put under pressure after being told that this is happening (laughs). Whenever I play, I only think of becoming a match-winner,” Harpreet told The Hindu during a virtual interaction on Sunday.

“I want to do well for the team and help it cross the line. That is what I keep trying. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I do not,” he added.

In a tournament where the bowlers are put under the pump from the very beginning, Harpreet operates with a simple mantra.

“I never pre-plan such things (whether to attack the batters or defend); I bowl according to the situation. But I always think about taking a wicket. Only when I take a wicket can I put my team in a better position and grow as a player.”

Being led by Shreyas Iyer has helped Harpreet immensely. “Shreyas is the best captain I have played under so far. He has an on-field attitude; he talks a lot. He allows us to do what we want and asks us to play without pressure. If a Punjabi guy gets such backing, he can win the world,” said Harpreet.

For now, the tweaker would not mind clinching PBKS’ maiden IPL trophy.
