NEW DELHI: Calm under pressure and fearless at the death, Mukul Choudhary lit up Eden Gardens with a 27-ball 57, launching seven sixes to script a remarkable last-over win for Lucknow Super Giants against Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday. The emotions were written all over the 21-year-old from Jhunjhunu’s face as he struck the winning runs – holding his nerve, battling anxiety, negotiating yorkers in the final over from Vaibhav Arora, waiting for the right ball to send over the ropes, and then raising both arms in celebration before his teammates sprinted in from the dugout to mob him. That six-hitting IPL night, however, is backed by an even bigger story of preparation. This wasn’t the first time the youngster from Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan had taken bowlers apart. Long before making headlines in the IPL, he had already smashed an incredible 36 sixes in an innings.

36 SIXES IN AN INNINGS

In Sikar (Jhunjhunu), where Mukul trains, he practices on black soil. Adjusting to red-soil wickets, however, became a major challenge. That’s when he turned to his Under-23 batting coach Chandrapal Singh. In Rajasthan, red-soil pitches are found in Udaipur and Nathdwara. The distance was daunting, but an adamant Mukul embraced the challenge.Packing his kit at night, he would board a bus to Udaipur (in Rajasthan) – and sometimes Nathdwara (in Rajasthan) – both nearly 500 km from Jhunjhunu.“Mukul is extremely hardworking. I didn’t know if he would agree to it, but he accepted the challenge despite all the travel. He had to cover long distances – it’s not easy to travel 500 km by bus, play a match, stay overnight, and then return. He did this almost three times a week,” Chandrapal told TimesofIndia.com. “He once hit 36 sixes in a T20 match. We had called up a couple of teams, and Mukul’s side was up against them. I knew he would play a big knock, but I didn’t expect him to set things on fire the way he did. He was hitting the ball brutally. He has also practiced MS Dhoni’s helicopter shot,” Chandrapal said.“You will find red soil in places like Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Cuttack and Karnataka. The way he stepped out of his comfort zone to prepare for this IPL is remarkable. He is a complete team man—team always comes first for him,” he added.Mukul enjoyed an impressive run in domestic cricket. After making a mark at the Under-23 level, he scored 173 runs in five innings in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025–26 at a striking rate of 198.85. His superb form with the bat earned him an IPL contract, with Lucknow Super Giants picking him up for Rs 2.60 crore at the IPL 2026 auction.

MUKUL CHOUDHARY: NOT JUST ANOTHER HITTER

For the 21-year-old, the ability to clear the ropes with ease – from bat swing to footwork, reach, and reading the situation – has not come overnight.“I have practised that shot since childhood,” Mukul had said during the post-match press conference after pulling off the heist.“My body is naturally a bit powerful, and that has helped me. I also practise hitting 100–150 sixes every day, so the bat speed develops if you keep repeating it. I have been training hard for the last five to six months, and it has now become part of my game,” he had said. After the match, LSG captain Rishabh Pant, who had looked tense until the final delivery, appeared visibly relieved. A broad smile spread across his face as he walked up to hug Mukul. For Chandrapal, Mukul has always been a player who puts the team above everything else.“More than just a classy batter, he is a brilliant team man. His first priority is always the team. I noticed this when he first came to me. In every situation, he would ask, ‘Sir, how can I help the team win?’ That attitude has made him special and brought him this far,” he said.“We have seen players like Russell and Pollard, who are physically very strong hitters. He is similar in that sense. He has that kind of muscular build and a very different mindset. If he has to hit 100 sixes in a day, he can do it comfortably,” added Chandrapal.

ULTIMATE DREAM – MEETING DHONI

Among his seven sixes against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday night, one stood out – a Dhoni-esque helicopter shot that sent the Eden Gardens crowd into a deafening roar. The entire LSG dugout, including Rishabh Pant, was left stunned.Lucknow Super Giants now will next face Chennai Super Kings on May 10 and for Mukul Choudhary, he will not just be riding on the high of his incredible innings, he will be looking forward to meeting his idol MS Dhoni. “I always look up to MS Dhoni because I am also a finisher. I always look up to him. His helicopter shot, which is very iconic, is my favourite. The way he led India in the 2011 World Cup, everybody remembers it. I want to be like him and finish off matches and help my team win,” Mukul had said on JioHotstar after the game.

Lucknow Super Giants will next face Chennai Super Kings on May 10.

Before that, their schedule is packed: they take on Gujarat Titans on Sunday, followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 15, Punjab Kings on April 19, Rajasthan Royals on April 22, Kolkata Knight Riders on April 26, Mumbai Indians on May 4, and once again Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 7.

NEW DELHI: Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Thushara has taken a step back in his dispute with Sri Lanka Cricket after earlier going to court over being denied permission to play in the IPL. Thushara had filed a case after SLC refused to grant him a No Objection Certificate (NOC), which is required for players to participate in overseas leagues.

Now, in a surprising turn, Thushara has apologised to the board via email, saying it was not his intention to “cause inconvenience to the governing body”. He clarified that he was only “seeking fairness and justice” as he felt he had been treated unfairly.

Dispute over NOC

The issue began when SLC rejected Thushara’s NOC request, reportedly due to failed fitness tests. In response, the 31-year-old approached the court, asking for intervention so he could play in IPL 2026, where he was set to feature for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, SLC opposed his plea in court and said it would file objections. The court accepted the board’s request, and the next hearing has been scheduled for April 23.Following this, Thushara appears to be reconsidering his legal action and may withdraw the case altogether. His apology signals a softer stance and an attempt to ease tensions with the board.Thushara, who has played 30 T20 internationals since 2022, had also featured in previous IPL seasons. While his immediate participation in IPL 2026 remains uncertain, the situation now seems to be moving towards a resolution rather than further conflict.

Rajasthan pacer Ashok Sharma has packed a remarkable rise into a short span — from his maiden T20 season for his State side to finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and now making his IPL debut with Gujarat Titans (GT) and having delivered the fastest ball of the ongoing season (154.2 kph). With his trajectory sharply on the upswing, Ashok said his ultimate goal is clear: to represent India.

Under GT head coach Ashish Nehra, the focus has been less on outright speed and more on execution. “He knows I bowl fast. His thing is just to bowl in the right areas and focus on what improvements you can make. Pace, I can bowl anytime,” Ashok said over a Zoom interview with journalists on Friday.

MUMBAI: A remarkable journey in the IPL reached a major milestone on Thursday as Rohit Sharma completed 15 years with the Mumbai Indians (MI), a franchise he has led to five IPL titles, building a legacy that will be hard to match and will inspire future generations.Rohit began his IPL career with Deccan Chargers (2008-10) before joining MI in 2011, a move strongly backed by Sachin Tendulkar, who captained the side then. “It was Tendulkar’s decision that MI must buy Rohit, back in 2011. It happened right in front of me,” Tendulkar’s close friend and former Mumbai seamer Atul Ranade told TOI.

It was on April 10, 2011, that Rohit made his MI debut against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) at the Feroz Shah Kotla. He scored an unbeaten 27 in a comfortable eight-wicket win, sharing a match-winning stand with Tendulkar. Reflecting on that phase, Rohit had said, “It was an emotional moment for me to join MI. It was like coming back to my home.”Rohit’s career with MI took a defining turn in 2013 when he was handed the captaincy mid-season after Ricky Ponting stepped down. The ‘Hitman’ immediately delivered, guiding MI to their maiden IPL title that year and later the Champions League T20 crown.Between 2013 and 2020, Rohit led MI to five IPL titles, establishing himself as the franchise’s most successful captain. He has 87 wins as captain for MI, the most by any skipper for the franchise, and boasts a perfect 5-0 record in IPL finals. He also became the first MI captain to win back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020. His success at the franchise level played a key role in him being appointed India’s white-ball captain in November 2021.Rohit continued to lead MI until IPL 2023, after which the franchise handed over captaincy to Hardik Pandya. Despite the leadership change, Rohit remains MI’s highest run-scorer, with 5,994 runs in 230 matches, along with the most centuries and Player of the Match awards for the team. In recognition of his contribution, a stand at the Wankhede Stadium was named after him last year. The veteran opener started IPL 2026 strongly, scoring 78 against Kolkata Knight Riders, followed by 35 against Delhi Capitals. With 118 runs in three matches so far, he continues to contribute significantly. As Rohit enters a crucial phase of his career, his long-standing association with MI remains one of the most iconic player-franchise partnerships in IPL history.

Sara’s silence could be linked to her brother Arjun Tendulkar, who is part of the LSG squad this season. He was bought at his base price of Rs 30 lakh ahead of the mega auction and is currently competing in a team filled with both experienced and young fast bowlers.Though he hasn’t had many chances yet, his all-round skills and performances in training keep him in the mix for selection. Ex-cricketer slam Pant for poor performance

Lucknow Super Giants won the last ball thriller against Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday, debutant Mukul Choudhary pulled the chase single handedly. Although despite LSG’s win former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif has criticised Rishabh Pant stating that the skipper must improve his game awareness and take greater responsibility. Pant endured another underwhelming outing, scoring just 10 runs, as LSG’s top order struggled. However, the team managed to pull off a thrilling three-wicket victory in Kolkata. Pant’s form has been inconsistent this season, with two low scores surrounding a solitary half-century in his first three matches. Speaking on Star Sports, Kaif highlighted the lack of consistency and stressed that an experienced player like Pant should take charge of the chase and bat till the end.”…the team needed him to stay till the end,” Kaif said. “He is an experienced player and has been playing in the IPL since 2016. The situation when he came in wasn’t very difficult, LSG had already scored 41 in the first five overs. One batter needed to take responsibility and guide the chase, and that role was meant for Pant.”Kaif further emphasised the importance of leadership, stating that a captain must lead from the front.“As captain, if you don’t take responsibility, you cannot help your team win games. Yes, he did well against SRH, but he needs consistency. One good innings followed by failures isn’t enough. He must read the match situation better and understand when to accelerate.”He also advised Pant to focus on building his innings and spending more time at the crease.“A captain’s role in a chase is to stay till the end, and that is something Pant needs to work on,” Kaif added.Lucknow Super Giants pulled off a thrilling last-ball victory against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, chasing down 182 in dramatic fashion. Batting first, KKR posted a competitive 181/4, with useful contributions across the order. However, they couldn’t fully capitalise despite a solid platform. In reply, LSG found themselves under pressure midway through the chase, but a stunning lower-order fightback turned the game around. Ayush Badoni anchored the innings with a composed half-century, while debutant Mukul Choudhary stole the show with a fearless 54 off 27 balls. The match went down to the final ball, where Choudhary held his nerve to seal a memorable win for LSG. His knock not only completed the chase but also announced his arrival on the big stage.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ Finn Allen (R) walks back to the pavilion after losing his wicket.

NEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Rovman Powell did not hold back after his side’s heartbreaking last-ball defeat to Lucknow Super Giants, pointing to an umpiring “blunder” while also admitting that conditions at Eden Gardens played their part in the result.Defending 181/4, KKR seemed in control when LSG slumped to 128/7 after 16 overs. But a sensational late onslaught from Mukul Choudhary, who smashed an unbeaten 54 off 27 balls, turned the game on its head as LSG sealed a three-wicket win on the final delivery.‘Maybe it was a blunder’The flashpoint came earlier in the innings when Finn Allen was dismissed in controversial fashion. His top-edge was caught at deep third man, but replays suggested the fielder may have brushed the boundary rope. Despite the close call, on-field umpires chose not to refer the decision upstairs.“Definitely more angles should have been looked at,” Powell said. “We thought we had seen in the IPL that umpires have gone upstairs for lesser things, and not as close as that.”“Maybe it was a blunder on their part, but we’re not going to say that is what cost us two points tonight,” he added, stopping short of placing full blame on the officials.‘Not a 220-wicket’Powell also highlighted the nature of the Eden Gardens surface, saying it was far from the high-scoring tracks typically associated with the venue.“It’s not that classic Eden Gardens wicket where you just go and blast. It was not a 220-wicket; there was a little bit in it for the bowlers, especially with slower balls,” he explained.Despite the loss, Powell credited Mukul’s composure under pressure. “You want to make Eden Gardens your fortress… but credit to the youngster, he batted really well,” he said.KKR’s struggles continue, with just one point from four matches so far. However, Powell remains optimistic.“If you see the history, winners build momentum in the middle and back end. It’s not easy when you don’t start well, but our destiny is still in our hands. We still have 10 games left,” he said.

NEW DELHI: Lucknow Super Giants’ stunning last-ball win over Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026 had a new hero, as young Mukul Choudhary announced himself on the big stage with a fearless match-winning knock. Chasing 182, LSG looked down and out at one stage, but Choudhary’s explosive unbeaten 54 off 27 balls turned the game on its head.Reflecting on his journey after the game, the Player of the Match said, “My journey actually started even before I was born. My father had a dream that one day his son would play cricket. But back then, our financial condition wasn’t strong, so I couldn’t start early.”

He added, “I began playing at around 12-13 years of age. There weren’t many academies at that time. One academy, SBC Cricket Academy, had just opened, and I trained there for about 5–6 years.”Choudhary’s rise hasn’t been easy, moving cities in search of better opportunities. “After that, I moved to Jaipur because if you want to play at a higher level, you have to move forward. I’ve been practicing in Jaipur for the last four years,” he said, before explaining how match exposure helped him grow. “I stayed in Gurugram for 3-4 months and played matches in Delhi, which helped me a lot in adapting to faster-paced cricket.”Despite the pressure of a tense chase, his mindset remained simple. “There is pressure, sir. But I think that God has given me this opportunity, so I just believe in my ability. This is a chance where you can become something big or make a name for yourself.”His approach during the chase was clear: “My plan was simple – I wanted to stay till the end. I trust myself that if I remain not out till the last, I can win the game.”Choudhary waited patiently for his moment. “My thinking was that even if the bowler delivers four perfect balls, at least one will come into my zone. I just need one ball to hit a six.”And when it came, he didn’t miss. “The first one. I hadn’t hit a six in the previous two matches, so that first six was special for me.”Summing up his fearless style, he said, “Since childhood, I’ve always played attacking cricket. I’ve always been someone who hits.”In the end, Choudhary remained grounded: “Yes sir… but they serve the country at the borders. I’m just doing my part here.”

NEW DELHI: The focus ahead of the IPL 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has been on whether Cameron Green will return to bowling. During the warm-up ahead of the match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, the all-rounder was seen bowling in the nets, raising hopes that he might soon resume full duties after missing out with the ball in earlier matches.KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane made it clear that Green’s bowling is key to improving the team combination.

“When he (Green) is allowed to bowl, we will see him, the combination gets better, so Rovman Powell plays, when Cam Green bowls then we have an extra bowler,” he said at the toss after being asked to bat first. He also confirmed a lineup change, adding, “Just one change – Sunil (Narine) comes in place of Blessing, Varun is still recovering from his hand injury.”Talking about batting approach, Rahane said, “We just want to, as a batting unit, watch the ball and react, rather than putting pressure on ourselves, trying to focus on a certain target and then try to achieve that. I think just being in the moment, try to react and watch the ball.”The discussion around Green started after KKR’s loss to Mumbai Indians, where he didn’t bowl and the team struggled to defend a big total. Rahane’s earlier comment, “That question you need to ask Cricket Australia,” added to the confusion and sparked debate about player workload and outside influence.Later, Cricket Australia clarified that there was no sudden restriction. Green has been managing a lower back issue and is gradually working towards bowling again. His recent net session suggests progress, though it’s unclear if he will bowl today against LSG. For such a high-profile player, expectations remain high for both batting and bowling contributions.

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans finally got their first win of IPL 2026 after a dramatic last-over finish against Delhi Capitals. The match turned on a crucial moment when David Miller refused a single late in the final over, a decision that proved costly.

Last-over drama decides the match

Delhi looked in control towards the end, especially with Miller hitting big shots and bringing the equation down quickly. However, the game changed in the final over bowled by Prasidh Krishna. Miller declined a single on the second-last ball, keeping strike but putting pressure on himself. On the final delivery, with two runs needed, he missed a slower ball and attempted a run, but Jos Buttler ran him out at the striker’s end, leaving Kuldeep Yadav short. Delhi finished agonisingly short, handing Gujarat a thrilling one-run win.

How the match unfolded

Earlier, Gujarat Titans posted a strong total of 210/4, thanks to key contributions from Jos Buttler (52), Shubman Gill (70) and Washington Sundar (55). Buttler’s aggressive start, including multiple sixes, set the tone, while Gill and Sundar kept the momentum going. In response, Delhi Capitals got off to a solid start with KL Rahul (92) and Pathum Nissanka (41) building a strong opening partnership. However, Rashid Khan’s three wickets in the middle overs shifted the momentum.Despite Miller’s late heroics, including a big penultimate over, Delhi couldn’t cross the line. The result marked Gujarat’s first win of the season, while Delhi suffered their first defeat after a promising start.
