Virat Kohli has returned to the Indian Premier League with immediate impact, delivering a match-winning performance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their season opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The veteran batter appears focused on helping RCB defend the title they secured for the first time last season.Interestingly, Kohli entered the tournament without a prolonged preparation phase. After India’s last ODI assignment in January, he took a break before travelling to England and has since been spending more time in London with his family. The move, aimed at staying away from the constant spotlight in India, hasn’t impacted his performances, as he continues to deliver on the field. However, his decision to base himself in London has sparked chatter on social media, with some even poking fun at the situation. Addressing the buzz in a light-hearted exchange with Danish Sait, who appeared in his popular Mr Nags persona, Kohli was asked about the jokes suggesting RCB were fielding five overseas players.Kohli, smiling, brushed it off with humour: “I don’t know, why are you asking me? Ask the overseas players. I am not an overseas player. Am I an overseas player?”Reflecting on RCB’s long-awaited title win, Kohli spoke about the emotional release that followed years of near-misses. Winning the trophy in his 18th season with the franchise brought a sense of relief that he had long chased.“I had heard of this statement or this saying, four years, monkey off the back. That night I really felt what it means. Everything became light,” he added. The former India captain also offered a deeper perspective on what success represents after years of dedication and perseverance. For Kohli, victory is not just about the result but about validation of the effort invested over time.

Poll

Having achieved his long-awaited title with RCB, what should be Kohli's next goal?

“Victory is the accumulation of hard work, all the sacrifices you’ve made, to be committed to the sport. It all comes together as a form of assurance, a reward, to know that you haven’t wasted your time. A lot of people learn from losses, but a lot of people can get very disheartened as well. So when you win after a lot of hard work, it makes you feel a sense of justice to the work that you put in, and also gives you motivation to work harder,” Kohli said.

NEW DELHI: “Tayyar rahio, ek challenge aane wala hai”That was Axar Patel’s message to Sameer Rizvi ahead of IPL 2026. What Rizvi did not know then was how quickly that challenge would arrive—or how decisively he would stamp his authority on it.When it did, the 22-year-old delivered a statement.Chasing 142 against Lucknow Super Giants, Rizvi walked in at No. 4 and produced a composed, unbeaten 70 off 47 balls, guiding Delhi Capitals to a six-wicket win. He walked into a ring of fire, with his UP teammate Mohsin Khan and the rest of the LSG pace battery making life difficult for the batters. But Rizvi weathered the early storm before settling into his comfort zone and accelerating with control.‘No. 4 is his favourite position’Rizvi’s comfort at the position comes as no surprise. He entered IPL 2026 on the back of consistent domestic form—491 runs in the UP T20 League, where he primarily batted at No. 4.“I am comfortable batting at No 4. I wanted to bat at the spot and the coach had told me earlier that I would come in at No 4 and that they would back me,” he said. “He asked me to play my natural game and stay positive,” Rizvi had told reporters after the game.Axar’s reminder ahead of DC’s season opener was a validation of the trust the management had placed in him.As per his uncle and formative coach, Tankeeb Akhtar, Rizvi relishes batting at No. 4, with time in the middle being key to his game.“Tujhe 4 pe batting karni hai. Tayyar rehna [You have to bat at No. 4. Be ready]. That’s what Axar Patel told him,” Akhtar tells Timesofindia.com. “He was very happy. No. 4 is his favourite batting position. When he called me, he was extremely happy and said, ‘That was amazing, mamu’]”.

“Even last year, in the final match, he played a fine knock—scoring 58 runs to help Delhi win. That’s where it all started for him. Against LSG too, he played a very good knock. The only change was that he needed time at the crease, and Axar gave him that time yesterday. Once he got time to settle on the wicket, he batted really well. He was happy,” he added.’Mamu, you’ll see – I will play well this time’Rizvi was the second-highest run-getter in the UP T20 League, averaging 61.38 and striking at 161.51. He continued his rich vein of form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 238 runs at an average of 59.50.Back home in Meerut, his preparation for IPL 2026 was intense and methodical.“When he is in Meerut, he bats for three hours on the centre wicket. Medium pacers, spinners, fast bowlers—everyone was used to prepare him for the IPL. He has worked extremely hard for this season. I am sure he will continue to play match-winning knocks this season. While leaving, he just said, ‘Mamu, you’ll see – I will play well this time’,” says Akhtar.‘8 crore ho ya 20 lakh – cricket khelna hai bass’Rizvi’s IPL journey has already seen sharp turns. Picked by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 8.40 crore in 2024, he struggled to convert his opportunities and managed just 51 runs in eight matches. He was released the following season – a move that raised eyebrows and brought with it an inevitable dip in valuation. Delhi Capitals picked him up for Rs 95 lakh. That massive drop in price could have easily unsettled the youngster, but as Akhtar says, for Rizvi, it was always about playing the game, not the price tag attached to it.“Dekhiye bura bahot lagta hai but Sameer ne kabhi dikhaya nahi wo apne shakal pe [Look, it does hurt a lot, but Sameer never showed it on his face]. Cricket comes first for him. He never talks about the price tag. He used to say whether it is Rs 8 crore or a Rs 20 lakh base price, he just wants to play cricket, no matter which IPL team it is,” says Akhtar. In 2025, after starting in the playing XI for the initial matches, Rizvi lost his place to the likes of Abhishek Porel and Ashutosh Sharma, and eventually managed just five games the whole season – scoring 121 runs at 40.33 and striking at 153.16, including a fifty in DC’s final game.Making an Impact This year, though, as an impact substitute, Rizvi has made his mark with a match-winning knock in the first game itself. He will now hope for a consistent run – something Akhtar also believes is within reach.“Mauka bahut kam mila tha usko CSK mein [He didn’t get many opportunities at CSK]. Even in the IPL now, this was only his second or third chance, and he played a very good innings,” says Akhtar, adding that the CSK stint did help Rizvi evolve as a cricketer. “He learned a lot from MS Dhoni – both his approach to the game and his thinking evolved. But when Dhoni stepped down as captain, everything changed. I had even asked him about opportunities or moving up the batting order. He said the captain is different now. He just didn’t get enough chances, that’s all,” remembers Akhtar. At DC, Rizvi seems to have found the ideal support system – a captain who trusts him and a senior pro he can lean on.“Axar has supported him a lot. He treats him like an elder brother. He also spends time with KL Rahul. He has told him one thing: ‘Be focused on your goal,’” says Akhtar about the DC setup. From a quiet heads-up before the season to taking on the challenge head-on, Rizvi has shown early signs that he could seize his moment in his third IPL year.

Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Thushara has approached the Colombo District Court seeking legal intervention to allow him to play in the 2026 Indian Premier League. Thushara has filed a case against Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), requesting that the board be ordered to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for his participation. The matter was heard in court today and is scheduled for a full hearing on April 9. In his petition, Thushara has named SLC President Shammi Silva, Secretary Bandula Dissanayake, Treasurer Sujeewa Godaliyadda, and CEO Ashley de Silva as defendants.

Thushara, who was picked by Royal Challengers for the 2026 IPL, highlighted that he had previously played in the 2024 and 2025 editions after receiving NOCs from SLC. However, the board has refused to grant the 2026 NOC, citing that he did not meet the prescribed fitness standards. The pacer maintains that his contract with SLC ended on March 31, 2026, and that he had already informed the board of his decision not to renew it and to step away from international cricket. He argued that he had also been informed he would not be selected for national duties, making the refusal to issue an NOC on fitness grounds unreasonable.Thushara further stated that his current fitness levels are consistent with those maintained throughout his career and that similar standards had not prevented SLC from issuing NOCs in the past. He warned that failing to obtain the NOC would force him to be replaced by his IPL franchise, resulting in a loss of income and career opportunities.Through the court, Thushara is seeking a declaration confirming his entitlement to the NOC, along with interim and permanent orders directing SLC to issue the certificate, ensuring his eligibility for the IPL and other overseas leagues. The court has fixed the next hearing for April 9.

NEW CHANDIGARH: He woke up in the morning with nerves on Tuesday. “Which I was really happy about,” Cooper Connolly said after leading Punjab Kings to a three-wicket win over Gujarat Titans. For Connolly, it wasn’t the nerves, but the “happiness” about having them. That small detail captures something essential about this 22-year-old from Perth. He doesn’t run from pressure. And on Tuesday night in New Chandigarh, he walked out to bat like a man arriving exactly where he was always meant to be.

SUBSCRIBE NOW!By the time he was done, Connolly had scored an unbeaten 72 off 44, guided Punjab to their first win of IPL-2026, taking Player of the Match honours on IPL debut, and left his new teammate Yuzvendra Chahal making declarations on his behalf.“He’s only 20 something but has the hunger to excel on the big stage,” Chahal said in the post-match presser. “The way he performed in his very first match, batting at No. 3, playing a match-winning innings, shows how mature he is mentally.”Awareness is a word that comes up often around Connolly. It is there in how he builds an innings and in how he resists the urge to overhit. He describes himself as: “I’m just more of a tempo player, try to feel the flow of my hands, I don’t hit too many big sixes, it’s more about timing.”Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer offered something more considered than ordinary praise. “I’ve seen him in the past as well, playing for Australia. He’s got a great mindset and hopefully he continues with the same form,” Iyer said.Connolly has modelled himself after Shaun Marsh, the former Australian left-handed opening batsman who too came from Western Australia like Connolly. There is also something poetic that Connolly now plays for the very franchise Marsh once represented. “Shaun Marsh played for the Punjab Kings, and I grew up watching him. It’s sort of an honour to play for the same franchise as him,” Connolly said.Connolly also credited Punjab head coach Ricky Ponting for easing the pressure on him. “Ricky Ponting just kept me calm and collected,” Connolly said. “He told me to play my game, go out there and dominate. It was a nice team performance. We were very strong with the ball and made things easier for ourselves.”

Poll

Do you believe Cooper Connolly will continue to perform well under pressure in future matches?

Connolly traces his journey through the WACA’s (Western Australia Cricket Association) development pipeline. He is part of a generation that came of age in the Big Bash League’s glare, while still respecting the grind of Sheffield Shield cricket. He also captained Australia at the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup.His big-match temperament was first seen in the 2022-23 BBL final, where he hit an unbeaten 25 off 11 balls in just his second T20 innings to lift Perth Scorchers to the title. His first-class debut arrived in the 2023-24 Sheffield Shield final against Tasmania, where he scored 90 in the first innings as Western Australia won the title. First big-format match, high pressure game and a game-changing knock. There is a pattern here, and it is not coincidental. “I actually don’t mind a bit of pressure. I feel like that suits the sort of style of person I am,” Connolly stated.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar on Wednesday expressed confidence that spinner Varun Chakaravarthy would bounce back in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Varun conceded a lot of runs in the T20 World Cup and in KKR’s IPL opener against Mumbai Indians (0/48 in four overs) at the Wankhede Stadium the other night.

However, Nayar solidly backed the spinner. “He has gone through a lot more than this. He has accomplished a lot over the past year, which has increased expectations…Statistically, he’s pretty much bowled the similar speeds that he always has.

“Hawkeye suggests he has bowled the same lengths, but sometimes players play you better,” Nayar said on the eve of KKR’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“It (Wankhede) was a pitch that challenged all spinners…and Varun bowls (in) those phases where he’s always going to be challenged. As a franchise, as support staff, we back him. Teams are playing him well. Doesn’t mean he can’t come back. It just means that it’s another challenge in his life.

“At times you want to protect a bowler and bring him at a time where you feel he can be more effective. But the nature of the game is (such) that sometimes you want to put your best players in a position to perform. If he picks up wickets there, he’s a different bowler.”

Nayar said the support staff, including mentor D.J. Bravo and bowling coach Tim Southee, had been working with the less experienced bowlers in the side to bring out the best in them.

NEW DELHI: Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin heaped praise on Ricky Ponting for a decisive team selection call after Punjab Kings edged past Gujarat Titans in a tense IPL 2026 clash, stating that the legendary Australian “once again proved right.”Punjab secured a narrow three-wicket win, but it was the impact of lesser-expected contributors that caught Ashwin’s attention. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin admitted he had initially questioned the decision to include Xavier Bartlett over Azmatullah Omarzai.

“I thought before the start of the game that Azmatullah Omarzai should play. Dude, why is Bartlett playing? But the way Bartlett bowled and batted, Ricky Ponting once again proved right by filling all the overseas slots with Australians,” Ashwin said.Bartlett may not have made a major impact with the ball, returning 0/36 in four overs, but he played a crucial cameo with the bat. Coming in at No. 9, he released pressure in the penultimate over by smashing Prasidh Krishna for a six off his very first ball, shifting momentum back in Punjab’s favour.Connolly’s composure seals the dealWhile Bartlett provided late fireworks, it was young Australian Cooper Connolly who anchored the chase with a mature knock of 72 off 44 balls on his IPL debut, earning the Player of the Match award.

Poll

Was including Xavier Bartlett over Azmatullah Omarzai a good decision?

Ashwin was particularly impressed with the 22-year-old’s temperament under pressure. “This is his first game in the IPL. It isn’t easy. The guy comes from Australia and has never played cricket in India. It wasn’t a bouncy-type wicket; it was a skiddy wicket and he adapted and played a very good innings,” he said.“There was a lot of pressure near the end; even then, he held his nerve and finished the chase well. He is only 22 years old and he performed so well in the BBL that he opened everyone’s eyes,” Ashwin added.Despite a brief collapse triggered by Gujarat, Punjab’s young core and Ponting’s tactical decisions ensured they began their campaign on a winning note, reinforcing Ashwin’s belief that experience in the dugout continues to make a telling difference.

NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings may have opened their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign with a thrilling win, but skipper Shreyas Iyer found himself in trouble with the league for a slow over-rate during the match against Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh on Tuesday.PBKS edged GT by three wickets in a tense chase, riding on a superb debut performance from Cooper Connolly, who struck an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls. However, the victory was followed by disciplinary action, as the IPL confirmed that Iyer had been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate — the first such offence in IPL 2026.

Why was Shreyas Iyer fined?

According to the IPL’s official statement, the penalty falls under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offences. Since it was Punjab’s first offence of the season, Iyer received a fine of Rs 12 lakh. The statement read: “PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 4… As this was his team’s first offence under Article 2.22, he was fined INR 12 lakhs.”Captains are held accountable for ensuring their teams complete overs within the stipulated time, failing which penalties — including fines and potential suspensions for repeat offences — are imposed.

Connolly shines in nervy PBKS win

On the field, Punjab’s campaign began on a high note. Chasing 163, the hosts looked in control before a sudden collapse threatened to derail the chase. Prasidh Krishna triggered panic with a three-wicket burst, reducing Punjab from 110/2 to 118/6.However, Connolly held his nerve, stitching crucial partnerships and guiding the team home with five balls to spare. He was named Player of the Match for his composed knock.Reflecting on the tense finish, Iyer said, “These things happen in the IPL. You have to stay composed. Cooper was there, calm and composed.”He also praised the young Australian, adding, “Cooper has got a great mindset… some of the shots he played were surreal, especially against Rashid.”

NEW DELHI: An unusual moment grabbed headlines on Day 4 of the Indian Premier League 2026 as Rahul Tewatia was forced to change his bat after it failed the official gauge test during Gujarat Titans’ clash against Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the penultimate over of Gujarat’s innings when Tewatia walked in to bat following the dismissal of Washington Sundar. As he took guard, on-field umpires intervened, noticing the size of his bat and subjecting it to a gauge test — a standard procedure used to ensure bats comply with prescribed dimensions.Umpires intervene, bat fails testThe bat failed to pass through the gauge, prompting immediate action. Tewatia was asked to switch bats before facing a single delivery, leading to a brief but dramatic pause in play. The rule was introduced to prevent players from using oversized bats. With a replacement bat in hand, Tewatia managed an unbeaten 11 off 10 balls, including a boundary, helping Gujarat post 162/6 in their 20 overs.WATCH: Tewatia’s bat fails the gauge testGujarat fall short despite fightbackDespite a competitive total, the Shubman Gill-led side fell short as Punjab chased down the target in 19.1 overs in a tense finish. But I think 175-180 would have been ideal,” Gill said after the match, adding that conditions improved under lights with a slightly wet ball aiding stroke play.Gill also credited Prasidh Krishna for sparking a late fightback with a three-wicket burst after being introduced in the 13th over. “He was bowling well in the nets, and we felt his pace could make a difference on a slowing surface,” he explained. The GT skipper also praised debutant Ashok Sharma, calling him a “good find” despite a challenging outing.

‘Chennai offered double of BCCI’s prize’: Culture that made CSK a champion team | Cricket News – The Times of India

‘Chennai offered double of BCCI’s prize’: Culture that made CSK a champion team | Cricket News – The Times of India

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) remain one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, sharing the record of five titles with Mumbai Indians and boasting 10 final appearances. Their dominance in a fiercely competitive league reflects not just on-field excellence but also a well-structured system built over the years. A major factor behind their sustained success has been the stability provided by the ownership group, which has consistently backed players and maintained a balanced squad.CSK’s philosophy has always revolved around trust and continuity. Unlike many franchises, they have prioritized retaining a strong core group even after auctions, showing long-term faith in their players, support staff, and team environment. This approach has also contributed to nurturing players who go on to perform at the international level. They have shown remarkable consistency not just on the field but also off it, with Stephen Fleming serving as their head coach since 2009. His long-term guidance has been key in building a stable, experienced team, helping CSK maintain a winning culture and remain one of the most dominant IPL franchises.Former India cricketer Abhinav Mukund highlighted another unique aspect of CSK’s culture, their strong backing of players beyond the field. He revealed that the franchise has a long-standing tradition of doubling the prize money offered by the BCCI, regardless of the team’s result, a gesture that reflects their commitment to player welfare. “I think the credit should also go to the management. That time, they clearly told us that whatever prize money BCCI is offering you, whether we are losing or winning, we will double it. And this is a tradition of Chennai from day one. Ask any clear Chennai player, they will say ‘this is a tradition that they have followed’, so at that point it felt like a huge thing,” Mukund said on Doordarshan Sports.

CSK’s unforgettable start in IPL 2026

In their IPL 2026 opener on March 30, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) secured a crushing 8-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati. After RR’s pace attack, led by Nandre Burger (2/26) and Jofra Archer (2/19), dismantled the CSK lineup for a meager 127, 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stole the show by smashing the season’s fastest fifty in just 15 balls. Rajasthan chased down the target in a mere 12.1 overs, finishing at 128/2 to hand CSK a heavy defeat in a match that also featured Sanju Samson’s quiet debut for Chennai and Ravindra Jadeja’s successful two-wicket return to the Royals.

JioStar terminates Bangladesh IPL cricket broadcast deal, letter shows

JioStar has ‌terminated its broadcast deals in Bangladesh for the Indian Premier League cricket tournament, saying its local partner defaulted on payments.

Mukesh Ambani’s entertainment venture JioStar has ‌terminated its broadcast deals in Bangladesh for the Indian Premier League cricket tournament, saying its local partner defaulted on payments, according to a document seen by Reuters.

Bangladesh in January banned IPL broadcasts after one of its teams, Kolkata Knight Riders, dropped Bangladesh pacer ‌Mustafizur Rahman on Indian cricket board’s instruction, just as tensions rose between the two countries following the killing ‌of a Hindu man in Bangladesh.

Though Bangladesh is reviewing ‌the ban and had on Saturday (March 28, 2026) said any further steps will depend on the opinion of its Sports Ministry, the termination by JioStar means there will be no local broadcaster for the IPL season, even if the country were to change its ‌stance.

“The agreement stands terminated with immediate effect,” JioStar said in a letter dated February 17 to Bangladesh broadcaster TSports, which had sublicensed the rights from JioStar for IPL seasons from 2023 ‌to 2027.

The company cited its partner’s “continued failure and default in adhering to the payment timelines stipulated under the agreement”.

JioStar, a joint venture of Mr. Ambani’s Reliance and Walt Disney, did not respond to Reuters queries. TSports and Bangladesh’s Sports and Information ministries also did not respond to requests for comment.

IPL, ‌the world’s richest cricket league valued at $18.5 billion, enjoys huge popularity among the cricket-viewing public in Bangladesh, where the game is an obsession like it is in rest of the subcontinent. Its latest season started on March 28.

India-Bangladesh relations have been strained since a political transition in Dhaka in August 2024 disrupted previously ‌close ties under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to New Delhi after a mass uprising.

But there are signs of a thaw in the relations after Tarique Rahman, the newly formed government’s Prime Minister, said in February that Bangladesh would engage on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests with its neighbours.

A separate JioStar letter, also dated February 17, showed ‌the company has also terminated its broadcast deals in Bangladesh for the Women’s Premier League cricket tournament over similar defaults.
