Grantchester star announced for new BBC crime drama ahead final ITV series

The eight-part series is set to begin production this spring in the North East.

There’s good news for fans of Grantchester as they’re set to see Robson Green in another crime drama.

The actor, who plays Detective Inspector Geordie Keating in the ITV period drama, will take on the role of Joe Ruby in the forthcoming eight-part series, The Northumbria Mysteries.

Centring on an unlikely crime-solving partnership, the BBC programme will be set against the sweeping Northumberland coastline and its surrounding market towns.

Characterised as a ‘jack-of-all-trades’, Joe’s life has been moulded by missed opportunities, mistakes and regrets, according to Radio Times.

Meanwhile, Oxford-educated DI Rose O’Connell is the polar opposite of Joe, portrayed as a deep thinker with a brilliant mind and an ice-cool disposition.

However, it has not yet been announced who will take on the role of Rose, reports Chronicle Live.

A brief synopsis for the series reads: “In a classic odd-couple pairing, Joe and Rose combine their talents as they frustrate, confound, and ultimately surprise one another while unravelling a series of compelling crime mysteries.”

It’s believed the forthcoming drama will commence production this spring and will be produced by Lonesome Pine Productions.

Speaking about The Northumbria Mysteries, Lesley Douglas, the executive producer and co-founder of Lonesome Pine Productions, shared their excitement.

They expressed: “We could not be happier to have Robson Green lead the cast and bring Joe Ruby to life, within the magnificent backdrop of Northumberland. Working with the BBC to realise these characters has been a labour of love.”

Lonesome Pine Productions shared the news on Instagram, revealing that the series will be directed by Gordon Anderson and Duncan Foster, and produced by Lesley Douglas.

The announcement quickly garnered responses, with many expressing their anticipation. One person exclaimed: “Amazing work.”

Another individual commented: “Ahhh, such great news for @director_duncan as well” While another penned: “This is what we love to see, Lesley.”

This follows earlier reports this year that Robson Green will return as Patrick Harbottle for a second season of the Channel 5 thriller, The Game.

Starring Jason Watkins, the gripping show was labelled a ‘cat and mouse thriller’ as police detective, Huw Miller (played by Jason Watkins), was haunted by an unresolved case in his town.

When his new neighbour, Patrick Harbottle (Robson Green), eerily repeats a phrase once uttered by the mystery stalker who terrorised his town years ago, events take a sinister turn.

The air date for The Northumbria Mysteries has yet to be confirmed.

Grantchester star Robson Green received praise for his role in the psychological thriller.

This week, ITV viewers will witness the series finale of Grantchester as the tenth instalment concludes.

Having portrayed DI Geordie Keating for over a decade, actor Robson Green shared an emotional post last year confirming that the show will conclude with series 11.

However, there’s good news for fans of the crime drama as they can see the star in a completely different role in another detective series, which is available to stream for free on ITVX.

Wire in the Blood first aired back in 2002 and ran for six years before ending in 2008.

Robson assumes the role of psychologist Dr Tony Hill, who assists the police in solving intricate murders in the fictional town of Bradfield, reports the Mirror.

A synopsis for the series reads: “Gripping psychological thriller starring Robson Green. Oddball psychologist Tony Hill delves inside the twisted minds of murderers to help the police, but at what cost to himself?”

Over the years, fans have showered the show with praise, with many commending Robson’s performance.

One viewer said: “Robson Green is incredibly impressive (and maybe a little bit scary) as eccentric psychological profiler Dr Tony Hill, and Hermione Morris does a great job as tough DI Carol Jordan, a woman in what is still very much a man’s world. All the characters have distinct and believable personalities. All in all, this series is great fun.”

Another wrote: “One of the best Crime drama/ Mystery Thriller TV shows ever made” Someone else commented: “Just can’t stop watching. I absolutely love this program so so much! I just want to watch it over and over again without stopping.”

One fan added: “This is one of the best crime series, if not the best crime series, I’ve ever seen. Praying they will do another series. Robson Green is amazing in it.”

As another shared: “This is one of those bingeable shows that, as soon as the episode finishes, you want to go straight onto the next one without skipping a beat. And there are 6 seasons. You have been warned.”

Wire in the Blood is available to watch on ITVX.

Inside ITV Grantchester’s ‘pretty’ filming locations and when season 10 is set

Grantchester is back on ITV for season 10 and fans can’t get enough of the detective drama but what do we know about where its brought to life?

Grantchester church filming

Grantchester, ITV’s much-loved detective drama, has captivated audiences not just with its dashing vicars but also its picturesque locations.

DI Geordie Keating (portrayed by Robson Green) returns once more to unravel further mysteries in Grantchester, this time alongside the parish’s newest arrival, Reverend Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair), in the show’s tenth series on ITV.

This evening’s (Thursday, 12 February) instalment will see the duo probe the death of a photographer who had been assisting Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) and Mrs Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones) with their fledgling fashion boutique venture.

Where is Grantchester filmed?

The series is chiefly shot in the actual village of Grantchester from which it takes its name, situated just a short distance from Cambridge.

Key filming spots include the Church of St Andrew and St Mary, the village centre, and Grantchester meadows, alongside other locations across Cambridge, West Sussex, and Hertfordshire.

Speaking to PBS, the programme’s location manager David Halstead revealed: “It’s a small, very pretty, quiet little village, probably about 300 houses and a church. It doesn’t even have a shop, actually.

“[Even so] it did have four pubs-down to three now-and its own gin distillery, which has come in handy!”.

A substantial amount of filming also takes place in Cambridge itself, with production frequently based at King’s College campus. Fortunately, Cambridge boasts numerous streets that require minimal alterations to transport viewers back in time.

Halstead elaborated: “We change some shop frontages, put in our own phone box, cover the yellow lines in the road, but it’s not massive.

“I mean there are great streets in Cambridge that you can make feel like the 1950s in minutes. We use King’s Parade quite regularly. Also, Trinity Lane and Senate House Passage.”

However, the Grantchester production team does encounter one recurring challenge during filming: cyclists.

“You nearly get killed every time you try to film there,” Halstead remarked.

“They refuse to stop for anybody. They just ring a bell and charge at you. Happens every time we go there!”.

When is Grantchester set?

The drama has predominantly been set in the 1950s, with the first series beginning in 1953.

As the programme has progressed, the timeline has advanced accordingly, with Grantchester’s tenth series now taking place in 1962.

The show’s 11th and final series is anticipated to conclude in 1963.

Grantchester continues every Thursday at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.

Grantchester fans need to watch ‘triumphant’ period drama hailed as ‘best ever’

Grantchester is continuing to air its penultimate season tonight but as fans slowly prepare themselves to say goodbye, there is another “phenomenal” period drama ready to stream for free.

Grantchester season 29 is in full swing but there’s another series that viewers can’t stop re-watching.

DI Geordie Keating (portrayed by Robson Green) and Reverend Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair) are back in action for Grantchester’s tenth season, with episode seven airing tonight, Thursday, February 12, on ITV.

This time, Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) and Mrs Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones) venture into the world of fashion boutiques. However, their plans hit a snag when their promotional photographer turns up dead.

But if you’re in the mood for something different tonight, there’s an alternative that fans are hailing as an “absolute masterpiece”.

Set in the 1960s rather than the 1950s, this mystery series follows a novice detective and his mentor as they unravel intricate murder cases in and around Oxford.

Endeavour serves as a prequel to the highly popular Inspector Morse, based on Colin Dexter’s novel series, which ran for 13 years before wrapping up in 2000.

The younger version of Inspector Morse, Endeavour Morse, is played by Betrayal and Vigil star Shaun Evans, who joins the force as a rookie detective constable.

He shares the screen with his mentor DI Fred Thursday, played by actor Roger Allam, and Jim Strange star and Outlander Blood of My Blood actress Sara Vickers, who portrays Joan Thursday.

Whilst Grantchester earns a solid 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, Endeavour has achieved a remarkable 90% rating, with all nine series available to stream free of charge on ITVX.

On Reddit, an enthusiastic fan declared: “Endeavour is an absolute masterpiece.

“The finale messed me up. It’s not happy good feel times, but it’s phenomenal.”

Another devotee on IMDb hailed it as the “best detective show ever”, whilst a third proclaimed it was “without doubt, a triumph”.

One viewer enthused: “This show is proof that you can have an amazing show without the garbage!”

Another commenter described Endeavour as “superb” before elaborating: “It is such a good show that I can hardly express it.

“The writing, acting, production values, and direction are as fine as those in any film I’ve ever seen.”

Several viewers admitted they’d found themselves rewatching the series, with one posting: “As soon as I had finished watching I watched it again taking in all the things I had missed the first time.

“I’ve watched this 3 times and will definitely watch it again. My only complaint is that there aren’t enough episodes”, confessed another user.

Someone else praised: “You can just feel the old atmosphere through the screen. Amazing actors & music. Feels really authentic. A must watch!”

Endeavour is available to watch on ITVX.
