Sweden intercepts suspected Russian drone during visit by French aircraft carrier

The Swedish military has intercepted a suspected Russian drone off the south of the country as a French aircraft carrier was docked in the port of Malmö, officials say.

The armed forces said on Thursday that a Swedish naval ship observed the suspected drone during a patrol in the Öresund, the strait that divides Sweden from Denmark.

They said that unspecified countermeasures were taken to disrupt the drone, and that contact with the drone was then lost.

The French nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is in the southern Swedish city of Malmö this week as part of regular NATO exercise activities. Malmö is located on the Öresund, opposite the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

French military spokesperson Guillaume Vernet told The Associated Press that the drone was detected on Wednesday and handled by Swedish forces integrated into a security system around the carrier.

He said Friday that the drone was more than 6 miles from the Charles de Gaulle.

“This system showed it is robust, and this event had no impact on the activity of the aircraft carrier battle group,” Vernet said.

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson told public broadcaster SVT Thursday evening that the suspected violation of Swedish airspace by a drone happened in connection with a Russian military ship being in Swedish territorial waters.

Asked what country he thinks the drone belongs to, he replied: “Probably Russia.”

The Russian ship continued into the Baltic Sea, and Swedish authorities have been in close contact with Denmark about the incident, Jonson said. The armed forces said no further drones were observed.

Western officials say Russia is masterminding a campaign of sabotage and disruption across Europe. An Associated Press database has documented well over 100 incidents.

Not all incidents are public and it can sometimes take officials months to establish a link to Moscow. While officials say the campaign — waged since President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 — aims to deprive Kyiv of support, they believe Moscow is also trying to identify Europe’s weak spots and suck up law enforcement resources.

Small boat migrants are being waved through UK ports and onto British soil after just 30-minute security checks, reveals SUE REID

Channel boat migrants are being waved on to British soil without strict security checks when they disembark, a Daily Mail investigation can reveal.

In a glaring lapse, hundreds of migrants arriving illegally on the Kent coast from France in the past month have been whisked through less than half an hour after stepping ashore.

Our investigation has found a lack of rigorous vetting by Border Force and the intelligence services which is designed to weed out suspected foreign criminals or potential terrorists coming in on trafficking gangs’ boats.

The Home Office has temporarily switched the Kent arrival port for boat migrants from Dover to Ramsgate, 20 miles away, opening what whistleblowers have suggested is a ‘dangerous’ gap in security.

The Daily Mail timed the movement of migrants who arrived in Ramsgate after being picked up mid-Channel by the Border Force vessels Typhoon, Defender and Volunteer since the beginning of February.

From there, hired coaches take them three miles to a processing centre in Manston.

On Tuesday, the time between their disembarkation from Typhoon to arrival at the Manston camp was 38 minutes.

The migrants were at the port, where they handed in their lifejackets, for 27 minutes before being let into the UK. They were given fresh clothes, medical wipes, a check for weaponry with a hand scanner and were then packed off to Manston.

On February 9, Defender brought in migrants at 9.50am. At 10.20am they left the port, arriving 13 minutes later at Manston processing centre – a total of 43 minutes.

The Volunteer berthed later that day, with migrants disembarking at 10.58am, before leaving on a coach 24 minutes later and arriving in Manston at 11.42am – 44 minutes in total.

The new arrivals at the camp, almost all illegal entrants, stay for up to three days for fingerprinting, identification and security interviews.

The interviews, we were told by those recently arrived, can last for just 45 minutes.

They are then sent to migrant hotels or Home Office properties around the country.

Manston is said by the Home Office to be a secure camp. But a whistleblower warned: ‘We know of cases where migrants have disappeared, been picked up by relatives and even visited the local McDonald’s. It is not a prison, nor meant to be.’

By contrast, those at Dover got dry clothes, were screened for illnesses and faced questions about their identity, according to the Home Office – a process that could take each contingent hours before they were taken to Manston.

It was designed to root out those with knives, guns, criminal records, or links to terrorism.

A whistleblower said: ‘Many were undocumented, completely anonymous. They often throw away their passports in France or during their journey. No one really knows who they are or what their intentions might be. It is potentially hazardous.’

Yesterday at 6.30am the Border Force vessel Ranger brought in a group who had set off from France soon after midnight. Following brief checks, they left Ramsgate on a coach less than half an hour later. There were no security interviews.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: ‘The Government must ensure proper checks are done on all these illegal immigrants.

‘We have no idea who they are or where they come from. They are mostly young men. Many commit sexual offences and crimes in the UK.’

Zia Yusuf, Reform UK’s home affairs spokesman, said: ‘Every individual arriving illegally must be immediately detained and deported. Anything less puts public safety at risk.’

The Home Office said: ‘Security‑check processes have not been affected by this temporary relocation, and all arrivals continue to be processed in the usual way.’

Some 74 migrants arrived in Ramsgate on Tuesday, the first since February 9, bringing the total this year to 1,604.

Yesterday, more than 400 arrived in the busiest Channel crossing this year, according to estimates, which would push the total since January 1 over 2,000.

Fromage affray! Moment French farmers use cheeseboards as weapons during brawl with visitors at agriculture show

A ‘fromage affray’ erupted at France’s premier farming show on Sunday night, resulting in 15 arrests after a violent dispute saw exhibitors and visitors turn heavy cheeseboards into improvised weapons.

The extraordinary violence at the world-famous Salon d’Agriculture mainly involved young men, with some wearing chefs’ aprons.

Police and paramilitary officers were among those injured during the brawling.

An officer at the scene said: ‘The fighting started at around 6.30pm, in Hall 4 of the salon

‘It seemed to between stall holders and visitors. Fifteen of those involved are in custody, and some are being treated for minor injuries. Police and gendarmes who tried to intervene were also heard.’

A video posted online and broadcast by BFM, the rolling TV news channel, shows a group fighting around a nougat stand.

Punches and kicks were exchanged, while others used the cooking implements to hit people around the head.

At one point, a blade used to cut nougat was held aloft, before being discarded.

Another visitor to the Salon said: ‘People were being very boisterous. It may be that they had been drinking all day – something that is very common at the Show.’

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, is among those who regularly visit the Salon d’Agriculture, which is held every year at an exhibition centre at Porte de Versailles, in the west of Paris.

Vast showrooms exhibit the best French food and wine, along with more than 4,000 farm animals, tractors and other farming equipment.

The idea is to transform the area into ‘the biggest farm in France’, according to organisers.

Around 600,000 people attend every year, and it typically hosts over 1,000 exhibitors

French politicians see this event, which is broadcast all over the world, as a show, as they strive to impress voters in a traditionally agricultural nation.

Mr Macron holds the current record for the longest a president has spent at the Salon, enjoying a full 13-hour stretch in 2024.

He said he wanted to meet ‘anybody who wants to have an exchange of views’.

There have been years of protests by farmers angry about low earnings, increasing bureaucracy, the imposition of environmental regulations, and what they see as unfair competition from abroad.

The 35 Britons on Trump’s ‘worst of the worst’ list of illegal immigrants… as he deports more back to the UK than Afghanistan or Iraq

Donald Trump is sending 35 criminal illegal aliens back to the UK amid his immigration crackdown that triggered shockwaves across America and the world.

The Britons feature on a list of shame dubbed the ‘worst of the worst’ drawn up and published by Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

It means more ‘worst of the worst’ criminals are being deported back to the UK from America than to Afghanistan or Iraq. There are 19 Afghans on the list, and 31 Iraqis.

A Daily Mail analysis of the countries of origin of the ‘worst of the worst’ illegal migrants also shows more are being sent back to the UK than France, Germany and Italy combined.

France is receiving nine, Germany eight, and Italy 10.

Offenses committed by the Britons include homicide, drug trafficking, sexual exploitation of minors, fraud, and making bomb threats.

Those on the list include three British women.

Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said more than half of the 35 British criminals – 22 of them – had already been deported.

She told the Daily Mail: ‘If you break the law, you will face the consequences. Criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the US.

‘The 35 criminal illegal aliens from the UK listed on the Worst of the Worst website [have] criminal histories including multiple counts of homicide, enticement of a minor, lewd or lascivious acts with a minor, robbery, assault, aggravated assault, weapons offenses, and drug trafficking.

’22 of these criminal illegal aliens have already been removed from the US.

‘Under President Trump’s and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s leadership, DHS has already removed more than 700,000 illegal aliens.’

It comes as Trump, Noem and ICE are embroiled in turmoil in the wake of the recent fatal shootings of protesters Renee Good and Alex Pretti by immigration agents in Minneapolis.

The ‘worst of the worst’ list – which is expected to grow – reflects the approach of Trump’s border czar Tom Homan, who has been at odds with Noem over how best to enforce the president’s immigration policies.

Noem pursued a strategy of high-profile raids to round up as many illegal immigrants as possible, sometimes joining operations herself in tactical gear and taking TV cameras along.

Homan has argued for a more targeted approach to capture and deport the ‘worst of the worst’ illegal alien criminals – like the ones featured on the list of shame.

In the wake of the fatal ICE shootings Trump sent Homan to Minneapolis to ‘fix’ the problem there.

Homan subsequently confirmed that future immigration operations would be ‘targeted’ against specific individuals.

The list of shame so far also features 25 criminals from Russia and 34 from Ukraine.

There are 137 from China, 347 from Venezuela, and 62 from Somalia, according to an analysis by the Daily Mail.

In total, the number of illegal aliens so far featured on the ‘worst of the worst’ list was 20,249 as of January 28.

The country with by far the most citizens on it is Mexico with 9,739.

The 35 UK-origin criminals represent only a portion of the total removals to the UK under Trump’s widespread immigration crackdown.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the three women on the ‘worst of the worst’ list include Raechal Wood, who it said had a conviction for drug possession and was detained by ICE in Florida.

Jessica Bell Tulloch had convictions for offenses including robbery and was arrested in New Jersey, according to the DHS.

Rosalie McCann was convicted of identity theft and held in Pennsylvania, the list showed.

Also on the ‘worst of the worst’ list was Sean Bourne, who was shown as convicted of homicide and assaulting a police officer, and detained in Orlando, Florida.

Shawn Winston Percival Lee was listed as convicted of homicide, and detained in New York, according to the DHS.

Harry Stacey was convicted of drug trafficking in Bentonville, Arkansas, the department said.

Richard Castle was convicted of offenses including ‘sexual exploitation of minor’ and arrested in Springfield, Missouri, according to the ‘worst of the worst’ list.

The DHS says the list was produced to ‘highlight the worst of worst criminal aliens arrested by ICE’.

‘Under Secretary Kristi Noem’s leadership, the hardworking men and women of DHS and ICE are fulfilling President Trump’s promise and carrying out mass deportations – starting with the worst of the worst – including the illegal aliens you see here,’ it says.

Noem is currently under heavy pressure over her handling of the Good and Pretti shootings.

She called Good, an unarmed mother, a ‘domestic terrorist,’ and suggested Pretti was ‘brandishing’ a gun, which videos from the scene showed he was not.

On Monday, Trump held a two-hour meeting with her in the Oval Office before sending Homan to Minneapolis, but the president has said she will stay in her job.
