Chennai Super Kings are in unfamiliar territory. For a franchise built on consistency and calm starts, losing the first two matches of an IPL season has been a rare occurrence. In fact, it has happened only twice in their history — first in 2022 under Ravindra Jadeja and now again in IPL 2026 under Ruturaj Gaikwad. What makes the stat even more striking is that under MS Dhoni, CSK went nearly two decades without such a start, highlighting just how unusual the current situation is for the five-time champions. The latest setback came against Punjab Kings, who chased down a stiff target of 209 at Chepauk to hand CSK their second successive defeat. Led by Shreyas Iyer, Punjab executed a near-perfect chase, winning by five wickets and registering their second consecutive victory. Iyer’s 50 off 29 balls was the cornerstone of the chase, as he stitched a crucial 59-run stand with Nehal Wadhera. The chase was set up early by Priyansh Arya’s explosive 39 off just 11 balls and further stabilised by contributions from Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly, ensuring the required run rate never spiralled out of control. Earlier, CSK had put up a competitive 209 for five, thanks largely to a brilliant 73 off 43 balls from young Ayush Mhatre. The youngster dominated the Punjab attack with fearless strokeplay, finding boundaries at will and showcasing his growing confidence. He was well supported by Gaikwad, who added 28 in a 96-run stand for the second wicket. However, the innings wasn’t without setbacks. Sanju Samson fell early, edging an ambitious shot behind the wicket, and the middle overs saw a slowdown as CSK managed just 45 runs between the 10th and 15th overs.Late contributions from Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube helped CSK add 64 runs in the final five overs, pushing the total past 200. But it ultimately proved insufficient against a composed Punjab batting unit. The numbers paint a deeper concern for CSK. Gaikwad is currently enduring the longest losing streak by a captain in the franchise’s history:

  • 6 – Ruturaj Gaikwad (2025/26)*
  • 4 – Ravindra Jadeja (2022)
  • 4 – MS Dhoni (2022/23)
  • 4 – MS Dhoni (2025)

For a team that thrived on stability under Dhoni, these back-to-back defeats — and the extended losing run under Gaikwad — underline a phase of transition. The challenge now is not just about bouncing back in the tournament, but about rediscovering the consistency that once defined Chennai Super Kings.

CSK’s ‘Roar 26’: Nostalgia, Dhoni buzz and an AR Rahman concert light up Chepauk before IPL 2026

Chepauk was wrapped in a cricketing time capsule – one where the past and the present met.

The hallowed MA Chidambaram cricket ground has seen thrilling sporting clashes, thanks to it hosting some great India and Chennai Super Kings matches. But Sunday evening was about something different: celebrating what the men in yellow have meant to Chennaiites over the years.

It was, in many ways, a pat on the back for the 20,000 people assembled to witness ‘Roar 26’. A sea of yellow engulfed Chepauk as passionate fans brought out the whistles — not just for this curtain raiser for the upcoming IPL 2026, but also for a musical concert by AR Rahman. Here, key highlights from the ‘Roar 26’ event, held at Chepauk on Sunday evening:

Nostalgia stirred

Other cities have cricket franchises. Chennai has an emotion — the Chennai Super Kings. One to which every player returns, years after moving away from cricket, and some even a decade after moving on to other franchises. That probably explains why players like Mutthiah Muralidharan, Joginder Sharma, Murali Vijay, Harbhajan Singh, Dwayne Bravo and Michael Hussey — few of the names that have contributed significantly to the success of the team over the years — lined up to have a friendly cricketing clash with the current CSK squad.

Watching the OG squad in action got every cricketing fan in the stadium go down memory lane. “These players were an integral part of my growing-up years,” says Rakesh M, a fan from Ashok Nagar, “As fans, we now back different players, but when you look back at our franchise’s history, these are the OG stars that started the fandom.” With veteran Muralidharan bowling to the current sensation, Sanju Samson, even as MS Dhoni crouched low behind the stumps, Chennai slipped into a different decade.

Chinna Thala’ bonds with ‘Thala’

If the city took on to MS Dhoni in a big way, even calling him ‘Thala’ wherever he went, his trusted lieutenant was none other than ‘Chinna Thala’ Suresh Raina. Chennai’s love affair with Raina — fondly dubbed Mr IPL — has lasted several years and the loud cheers he received at the ground, something that spectators usually reserve only for Dhoni, showcased how much he means to the city.

Along with Matthew Hayden, Raina was inducted into the franchise’s first-ever Hall of Fame. Part of four IPL-winning CSK squads in the past, Raina stated, “CSK is the best franchise and they have the best fans in the world. The crowd here is very knowledgeable — they know their cricket — and have been so supportive to the team over the years; that’s why we got all those trophies.”

Practice makes perfect

In 2018-19, when Team CSK practised at Chepauk in the evenings before the commencement of the tournament, thousands of fans enthusiastically cheered them. The sight of more than 12,000 fans lining up just to watch a practice match had the cricketing community across the world in awe.

Sunday evening presented a similar experience, with the current squad of 2026, including the likes of Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Noor Ahmed, getting some time at the nets, which Chennai cheered with much fervour.

A different pitch

Post the cricketing highlights and nostalgia, the stage was set for music. If Asal Kolaar and Paal Dabba got the crowd grooving to popular tracks like ‘Makamishi’ and ‘Paiya Dei’, the Mozart of Madras, AR Rahman, kickstarted with an energetic ‘Yuva’, followed by Shweta Mohan-driven melodies (‘Nenjinile’ and ‘Munbe Vaa’), dedicated to Sanju Samson and Suresh Raina. The loudest cheers were dedicated to the popular ‘Nee Singam Dan’ tracks, with the cameras panning on MS Dhoni vibing to the track along with his daughter.

Actor Sivakarthikeyan, who said he was invited as a representative of CSK fans, turned into a fanboy as he excitedly shook hands with Dhoni, Sanju and posed for photographs with the team. “I live 25 kilometres from Chepauk – on the ECR – but whenever Dhoni walks in, I can hear the noise back home. I am just one of the many fans here who have been inspired by his leadership skills. IPL can be about entertainment, but CSK has always been an emotion and family,” said the actor, referring to Dhoni as Mufasa and current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, as Simba.

Singling out the latest CSK entrant Sanju Samson, affectionately called ‘Cheta’ by fans, he said, “We all know of the bonding between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Malayalam films are hits here. All the heroines from Kerala are superhits here. And now, you are a cricketer from Kerala representing Chennai… you are a blockbuster.”

The class of 2026 is new. Prashant Veer, Karthik Sharma and Sarfaraz Khan are some of the exciting new players to watch out for. . The faces may have changed, but the emotion and belief remains the same. This IPL 2026, the whistles are back.

A simple gesture off the field once again showed why Sanju Samson continues to win hearts — even before playing a single game for Chennai Super Kings. As Samson begins a new chapter in yellow ahead of IPL 2026, he has already been making the most of his time alongside MS Dhoni — sharing nets, engaging in cricketing conversations and learning from one of the game’s greats. The wicketkeeper-batter has also been seen accompanying Dhoni at events, soaking in the experience. But it was during one such event that Samson’s humility stood out.

After Dhoni signed a bat, organisers requested Samson to do the same. The former Rajasthan Royals captain politely declined, choosing to let the moment remain about the CSK legend. Dhoni, however, ensured Samson eventually added his autograph — a small moment that resonated widely with fans.Fresh off a stellar ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, where he played a key role in India’s title-winning run, Samson now gears up for his first season with CSK after a major move from Rajasthan Royals.Speaking about the opportunity to share the dressing room with Dhoni, Samson said, “I have spoken to Mahi bhai (Dhoni) over the phone and interacted with him, but playing with him as part of a team will be great. I see it as an opportunity to learn from him.”“(I am) looking forward to playing for CSK, I feel grateful for the love and attention I have been getting from fans,” he added.Samson’s journey with CSK will begin with an emotional clash against his former franchise, as Chennai take on Rajasthan Royals in their opening game on March 30 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.“This is the first time I will play against Rajasthan Royals, but I don’t let emotions rule me on the field. I left Rajasthan Royals because I felt my time in the team was over. Even if we come up against them now, I will play my best cricket,” Samson said.High on confidence after being named Player of the Tournament in India’s T20 World Cup triumph — sealed with a dominant win over New Zealand — Samson believes the momentum is with him.“I wasn’t very confident when I left home to play in the World Cup, but the universe had other plans; I played well and the reception has been great,” said Samson.

Chennai Super Kings suffered a big blow ahead of the IPL 2026, with Nathan Ellis set to be ruled out of the competition. The 31-year-old Australian fast bowler has suffered a hamstring injury and won’t recover in time.

“It is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements,” said CSK CEO K.S. Viswanthan to The Hindu on Thursday during an event to announce Kauvery Hospitals as an official partner of the team.

The hospital’s medical director Dr. Iyappan Ponnuswamy, Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, co-founder and executive director, and Dr. S. Sivaram Kannan, clinical lead & chief consultant physician, were present on the occasion.

The loss of Ellis could force a major rethink of plans for the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led outfit.

Since 2022, the team had relied on Matheesha Pathirana as the death-overs specialist, but released the Sri Lankan pacer after a disappointing campaign last year.

Meanwhile, Viswanathan also said that the foreign recruits will join the camp in the next few days. He said the recent West Asia crisis, which has affected major airline hubs in the UAE and Qatar, hasn’t significantly affected the travel plans of their overseas recruits.

Noor Ahmad has already arrived, while Jamie Overton was expected to reach Chennai by Thursday tonight.

The likes of Dewald Brevis, Matt Henry, Zack Foulkes and Matthew Short will join by March 22, while Akeal Hosein will join on the 25th.

Meanwhile, Sanju Samson, the star of India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign, arrived in the city on Thursday to join the pre-season camp.

The five-time champion made one of the biggest trade deals in the IPL last year when it traded in Samson from Rajasthan Royals for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.

The Super Kings, including their star player M.S. Dhoni, have been training in the city since March 1, initially at its High Performance Centre and currently at the MAC Stadium. They could also have an intra-squad game on March 23.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has long been an admirer of Sanju Samson, who recently earned the Player of the Tournament award as India clinched a record third T20 World Cup title. Reflecting on the wicketkeeper-batter’s rise, Tharoor recalled telling a young Samson that he could become the next MS Dhoni.“I feel tremendous pride. I first met him when he was 14, a young club cricketer with a big smile and immense talent, already excelling in both wicketkeeping and batting. I had told him, somewhat patronisingly, that he would be the next Dhoni,” Tharoor said.

Gautam Gambhir reflects on India’s World Cup win and backing Sanju Samson in the tournament

However, former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir later advised Tharoor that Samson did not need to emulate anyone else and would instead forge his own path. Gambhir, even before becoming India’s head coach, had consistently backed Samson. In 2020, he had called him “not just the best wicketkeeper-batsman in India, but the best young batsman in India.”“Years later, Gambhir corrected me, saying he does not need to be the next Dhoni; he will be the one and only Sanju Samson — and that is exactly what he has become,” Tharoor added.Dhoni remains the benchmark for wicketkeeper-batters, arriving at the international stage as a big-hitting top-order batter before becoming one of India’s finest middle-order finishers and captains, winning all three major ICC white-ball trophies.Samson, meanwhile, had struggled with form in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup and was even benched before returning for the crucial Super 8 clash against Zimbabwe. He then followed that performance with three consecutive half-centuries: 97* against West Indies, 89 against England, and 89 against New Zealand in the final, consistently anchoring India’s innings and guiding them to defend the title.“He has been a terrific success — quiet, modest, unpretentious, and an effective leader,” Tharoor said. “He has led Rajasthan Royals very well for years and brought stability to India’s top order. Even during his difficult phases, I always felt that if he composed himself, his core talent would shine through.”Recalling Samson’s semi-final and final displays, Tharoor added, “In both matches, he reached 89 before being dismissed while selflessly playing big shots for the team. He could have played conservatively, but he chose to accelerate, showing the selfless, talented, and dedicated nature of Sanju Samson.”

Sanju Samson’s record-breaking T20 World Cup 2026 campaign

Sanju Samson’s stellar campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 has rewritten the record books. In just five innings, he scored 321 runs, breaking Virat Kohli’s long-standing record of 319 runs in the 2014 T20 World Cup for the most runs by an Indian in a T20 World Cup, and set a new benchmark for the most sixes in a single World Cup with 24.Samson also broke multiple other records, including the most runs for India in consecutive innings, the most runs in T20 World Cup knockout matches, and the highest score for India in a T20 World Cup final and in a chase. His blend of power-hitting, composure under pressure, and match-winning instincts made him the standout performer of the tournament. With these feats, Samson not only helped India clinch their third T20 World Cup title but also elevated himself into the elite echelon of T20 cricket legends.

Former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath believes it would be extremely difficult for the Chennai Super Kings team management to leave MS Dhoni out of the playing XI in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.Dhoni is set to return for Chennai Super Kings in the 2026 campaign, with franchise CEO Kasi Viswanath already confirming that the veteran will be available for the entire tournament. However, the exact role he will play during matches is yet to be finalised. According to Viswanath, the decision will be taken by the team management, who will decide whether Dhoni features as the wicketkeeper or is used as an impact player depending on the match situation. The 44-year-old had a relatively quiet season in IPL 2025 season, scoring 196 runs from 14 matches. Batting mostly in the lower order, Dhoni averaged 24.50 and maintained a strike rate of 135.17 while often coming in during the closing stages of the innings to provide quick runs.Despite questions around his role, Badrinath feels the management would find it almost impossible to bench the legendary captain given the stature he holds within the franchise. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former CSK batter suggested that even head coach Stephen Fleming may not be in a position to make such a call.“I don’t know if it is an administrative decision where he (CSK CEO) said that he (Dhoni) is ready to play all matches. He said that he would support the cricketing decision and stop. Now, will Fleming go and tell Dhoni that you don’t play this match, we are dropping you. I don’t think Fleming has a chance at all. How will he go and tell Dhoni that you are dropped? I literally feel that it is not possible,” Badrinath said on his YouTube channel.Badrinath further emphasised the level of respect Dhoni commands inside the CSK dressing room. According to him, it would be extremely hard for any member of the coaching staff to even suggest that the former India captain should sit out or be used only as a substitute.“I don’t think any support staff in the world, be it even Fleming, can tell Dhoni you are an impact player, or you don’t play this match. There is no chance. We can take it that he is going to play all the matches,” he added.

The batting position of MS Dhoni in the Chennai Super Kings line up has become a talking point in recent seasons. Fitness concerns have often seen the legendary wicketkeeper batter walk in much lower down the order, sometimes at No. 8 or even No. 9. As a result, Dhoni has been left with only a handful of deliveries to influence the game with the bat.In his prime, Dhoni built a reputation as one of the most destructive finishers in world cricket. Even now, the former CSK captain has produced several quick cameos that remind fans of his finishing ability. Those flashes have sparked debate among supporters and experts who feel he should bat higher to maximise his impact.

Sanju Samson opens up on T20 World Cup journey, and title win

India Test veteran Cheteshwar Pujara is among those who believe Dhoni should be given a bigger role with the bat. Speaking on JioHotstar, Pujara said he struggles to understand the logic behind sending the former India captain so far down the order.“I don’t see a point in MS Dhoni batting at No. 8 or 9, because he has the potential to turn games around single-handedly, something no other batter in the CSK team can do. If he bats for only five or ten balls, imagine what Mahi bhai can do if he plays 25 or 30 balls,” Pujara said on JioHotstar.Pujara, who was part of the CSK squad that lifted their record-equalling fifth Indian Premier League title in 2021, also spoke warmly about the franchise’s dressing room culture.“I’ve been in the CSK setup. In that environment, players are very comfortable; it’s like a family. When you’re in that setup, there is clarity about what is expected of you as a player,” Pujara said.He added that loyalty has always been a defining feature of the franchise’s philosophy.“Loyalty also comes into the picture because most of CSK’s players, if you look at the history, stay for a long time once they become part of that setup. There is a transition in the team now, so there is a bit more preference for young players,” he added.Meanwhile, CSK chief executive Kasi Viswanathan has expressed confidence that Dhoni will feature regularly for the team throughout the season.“He (Dhoni) will play all the matches, according to me,” Kasi said.CSK recently secured the services of wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson from the Rajasthan Royals, a move that has raised fresh questions about what role Dhoni will perform in the playing eleven.Kasi clarified that the final call on Dhoni’s responsibilities will rest with the team’s coaching staff rather than the administrative management.“That is a cricketing decision which will be taken by the cricketing staff, not by the administrative staff. So they will decide whether he is going to play as a batsman, as a wicketkeeper-batter, or as an impact player,” he said.

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has praised India head coach Gautam Gambhir for backing Sanju Samson, whose red-hot form with the bat has become one of the biggest talking points of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.Samson was drafted back into the Indian playing XI after the team lost to South Africa, in what was effectively a knockout clash against the West Indies cricket team. The wicketkeeper-batter seized the opportunity in style, smashing a superb 97 during a tense chase to guide India to victory. He carried that momentum into the semi-final, producing a blistering 89 off just 42 balls as India defeated the England cricket team to book a place in the final against the New Zealand national cricket team.

Speaking on the ‘Game On Hai’ show on PTV Sports, Akhtar explained that Samson’s return to the side was not a straightforward call. According to the former pacer, Gambhir had to strongly advocate for the batter’s inclusion within the team management setup.“Samson has been in the Indian cricket circuit since 2014. Back in the days when I was working in India, around 2015, there was a lot of hype surrounding him. He had to wait for a long time to get regular chances as India had wicketkeepers like MS Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik and others. Even now, Gambhir has fought with everyone to get him into the team. Basically, his selection has been done forcefully and after a lot scrutiny. He didn’t feature in the tournament initially,” said Akhtar in a video shared by Tapmad.Samson’s numbers in the tournament underline his remarkable run of form. In four matches so far, he has accumulated 232 runs at an impressive average of 77.33 and a strike rate of 201.73, including two half-centuries. His highest score remains the unbeaten 97 against West Indies in the virtual quarter-final in Kolkata. The 31-year-old also etched his name alongside Virat Kohli after his semi-final heroics. Samson’s 89 against England equalled Kohli’s record for the highest score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup knockout match. Kohli had produced an identical 89 not out off 47 balls against the West Indies during the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2016 at the same venue.Samson has also dominated the six-hitting charts in this edition of the tournament. With 16 maximums to his name, he has already surpassed the previous Indian record of 15 sixes in a single T20 World Cup campaign, which was set by Rohit Sharma in the 2024 edition.

The captaincy handover from Rohit Sharma to Shubman Gill in 2025 sparked plenty of debate in Indian cricket. Nearly eight years earlier, a similar shift had taken place when MS Dhoni made way for Virat Kohli as India’s full-time captain across formats in 2017.Dhoni had already stepped down as Test captain in 2014, but 2017 marked the complete transition. It has now come to light that the move was initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India selection committee, who informed Dhoni of their intention to make a change. He was also asked to formally communicate his decision via email.

Former selector Jatin Paranjpe, speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show, recalled how he and then chief selector MSK Prasad approached Dhoni about the matter.“Mahi (Dhoni) was batting. He kept batting for an hour, and MSK and I were just looking at each other. We had prepared how to tell him in the most respectful way. So we went to him and said, ‘You know, Mahi, I think it’s the right time to move on’,” Paranjpe said.According to Paranjpe, Dhoni accepted the proposal without resistance.“He told MSK, ‘Anna, this is the perfect decision. Let me know what you want from me’. MSK told him that he will have to put it in writing that you are ready to move on. He said, ‘Alright, I will do it’.”“Late at night, we received an email: ‘I would like to step down’. We had to make this decision. We were criticised for it as well, but these are the tough decisions that you have to take,” he added.Paranjpe further revealed that Dhoni assured complete support to Kohli.“He also said, ‘Don’t worry. I will work completely with Virat. He is like my brother. I will do everything that is required of me for him. Whatever experience I have, I will give it to him. And we’ll make a good team’,” Paranjpe shared. At the time, Dhoni was 35 and had already achieved everything in white-ball cricket, guiding India to the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
