NEW DELHI: In an era of fleeting flamboyance in cricket, Axar Patel is an outlier. The all-rounder played a pivotal role in India winning three ICC titles — two T20 World Cups and a Champions Trophy — in a span of 21 months. He has won games with both bat and ball, and his fielding has been equally memorable.Who can forget his catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh with a perfectly timed leap at deep square leg in Gros Islet in 2024, or the effort at a packed Wankhede where he ran back from point to grab a skier from England captain Harry Brook during the thrilling T20 World Cup semi-final.

Then there was the Will Jacks catch in the same match. While the scorecard will credit Shivam Dube, it was Axar’s stunning effort that made all the difference. He plucked the ball on the run, lost balance without losing awareness of the boundary cushions, and tossed it towards a converging Dube to complete the dismissal. The 32-year-old has always been hailed as a team man to the very end. Over the years, he has been labelled India’s “crisis man”, “the underrated one”, Ravindra Jadeja’s “understudy”, and even tagged as “forever the bridesmaid”.The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League presents him with a chance to shed those tags. Leading the Delhi Capitals for a second consecutive season, Axar has an opportunity to claim a crowning moment in his career. On Monday, at the Delhi Capitals pre-season press conference, Axar deservedly received all the plaudits, but he looked like a man on a mission. IPL 2026 could also mark a defining chapter for a player who has given his sweat, tears and blood to a franchise often seen as the IPL’s perennial underachiever, while entering his eighth consecutive season with the team.

“In the first year as captain, you are learning a lot, be it about your players, about situations and about yourself as a leader. Now I feel more settled. I understand the players better, I understand what works for this team and what kind of environment we want to create,” said Axar.“The focus is on being positive, aggressive and, most importantly, building trust. When players feel that backing and trust, they automatically take responsibility and perform better. That is something I am very clear about as a captain.”Delhi Capitals will start their campaign on April 1 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. The first job for Axar will be to kick off the campaign with a win. The Delhi franchise, in the past, has often come close but not finished the job. Axar knows this very well, having played 84 games in Delhi colours.MUST READ | Understated, indispensable: Why Axar Patel remains India’s unsung MVP“We don’t sit and keep talking about the past. Everyone knows that we have come close in certain moments, and as players you are aware of it anyway. The conversation is always about what we can do better going forward. Maybe one or two matches could have changed things, but that is how the game goes. We focus on staying positive and improving as a unit rather than carrying those thoughts into a new season,” he said.

If Delhi Capitals are to end the drought, Axar will have to step up with the bat, ball and as a captain. Interestingly, Axar has never crossed the 300-run mark in the IPL in the 162 games he has played over twelve years. The all-rounder is yet to better his debut season with the ball, where he picked up 17 wickets for Kings XI Punjab, now Punjab Kings. But as Venugopal Rao, Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket, said, the management believes in Axar to take the franchise to that elusive trophy.“Franchise cricket and the Indian team are totally different. There are different cultures. At the franchise level, there are players from different countries who come together and play. In the Indian team, everybody knows how they will play. The winning mentality of the Indian team is such that everyone is flexible enough and adapts to any role and conditions. At the franchise level, as skipper, I would like to bring that. You can’t just play one way,” he said.“In the Indian team, roles are set. At the franchise level, sometimes someone who opens has to play in the middle order.“I am very excited about the new season. Whatever mistakes we made last season, we have got good back-ups in the opening slot and the pace department at the auction. We have a full-fledged squad, and we are very excited about fighting for the title,” added Axar.

Axar also made it pretty clear that, as an all-rounder, he is not a big fan of the Impact Player rule. “As an all-rounder, I am personally not a fan of the Impact Player rule. Earlier, you would have to pick all-rounders. Because of this, team managements can pick a particular batter or bowler. So, I am not a fan of it,” he said.Axar Patel also shared what he has learnt from captaining Delhi last season. Not to forget, he is the vice-captain of India’s title-winning T20 World Cup team and was dropped in the Super Eight against South Africa because of match-ups.“I am not saying I don’t look at data or match-ups completely. It depends on the situation. I look at all factors and assess. It is not that I don’t look at match-ups or data. I follow everything and then it depends. You have to know when to use what weapon. When you are on the ground and taking decisions, it is about what you feel at that point of time. Obviously, you go on instinct as well. It is a mix of things,” he said. For Axar Patel, IPL 2026 is not just another season, it is a chance to redefine his narrative. A player long valued for his selflessness now stands at the centre of Delhi Capitals’ ambitions. If he can combine his all-round consistency with decisive leadership, this could finally be the season where he moves from being the dependable support act to the man who delivers the ultimate prize.

Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings will once again begin their quest for a maiden Indian Premier League title when the 2026 season kicks off on March 28. Both franchises, despite nearly two decades in the competition, are yet to lift the trophy.Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who has represented both teams, reflected on their journeys and highlighted key reasons behind their prolonged title drought.

IPL 2026 should be audition for the next India T20I captain

Speaking on JioStar, Pathan pointed out that Delhi struggled with talent identification during the early 2010s, which hindered their progress.“When I was in Delhi, Eric Simmons, who is now with CSK as the bowling coach, was the coach, and there was an effort to bring stability. But when you let go of players like AB de Villiers, and you have Andre Russell, starting from scratch is not easy. I played alongside Russell in the same dressing room, and there were a lot of discussions about giving him more opportunities, but they just couldn’t find a place for him consistently in the XI. So, identification of talent is very important, and I feel Delhi used to fall short in that area,” Pathan said.Punjab, on the other hand, have shown signs of progress in recent seasons. Ahead of IPL 2025, the franchise made significant changes by appointing Australian great Ricky Ponting as head coach and signing Shreyas Iyer for ₹26.75 crore. The team enjoyed a strong campaign and reached the final before falling short against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.Pathan credited Punjab’s improved leadership and strategic planning for their resurgence.“Leadership has played a huge role in Punjab’s turnaround. You win half the IPL at the auction table. Big purses don’t necessarily mean you will always get what you want, but they did, and they reached the final. Even in the mini-auction, they took bold but important calls, like letting go of players who were not performing, such as Glenn Maxwell,” he explained. He also referred to the situation involving Josh Inglis, noting how circumstances impacted their plans.“They were a bit unfortunate with the Josh Inglis situation, given he would miss most of the season, but then you see another team going after him for a huge price. In that respect, they are making a lot of the right decisions,” Pathan added.Another key improvement, according to Pathan, has been Punjab’s focus on strengthening their squad depth.“Look at the backup players. In the past, Punjab struggled with that when the focus was entirely on building the first XI, but now you see all-rounders like Azmatullah Omarzai, Marco Jansen and Marcus Stoinis, along with a young Indian batting core. Apart from that, they went all-out for Shreyas Iyer after deciding he would be the Captain. So, there is clarity of thought, and I feel Punjab have started to move in the right direction,” he concluded. As IPL 2026 approaches, both Delhi and Punjab will be aiming to finally break their title drought, armed with lessons from the past and renewed optimism for the future.

The 26-year-old endured a difficult phase, going unsold as Delhi chose not to re-sign him. His wait for another opportunity continued into the IPL 2026 auction, where he was initially overlooked in the main rounds. However, fortunes turned during the accelerated phase, as Shaw was among the final set of players picked, securing a Rs 75 lakh deal with his former franchise.

“Delhi, Your Boy is Home”

Delhi Capitals marked Shaw’s return with an emotional video on social media, captioned “Our Boy is back home.”In the video, Shaw reflected on his bond with the franchise and the stadium:“You don’t forget a place like Kotla. Aakash Chopra has raised concerns over Cricket Australia’s reported decision to delay Mitchell Starc’s availability for IPL 2026, questioning the logic behind resting a fully fit player.Starc, who was expected to spearhead the bowling attack for Delhi Capitals, is likely to miss the initial matches due to workload management despite not playing any competitive cricket for nearly two months. In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra expressed his confusion over the move, especially with other Australian quicks like Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins already sidelined due to injuries.“If Mitchell Starc is also not going to come at the start, what is Cricket Australia doing? You didn’t let Josh Hazlewood come, Pat Cummins isn’t coming, and now you have held back Mitchell Starc, even though he is absolutely fit. He has already said goodbye to T20Is. So what has he done in the last two months or so?” he said.Chopra pointed out that Starc has not featured in any matches since the 2025–26 Ashes and questioned the need to preserve him so early for the upcoming five-Test series against India.“He hasn’t played any cricket after the Ashes, but despite that, you have asked him to rest because a big Test season is coming up, in which there are five Test matches against India. That’s just before the next IPL. Why are you doing that now?” he observed. The former India batter also suggested that franchises may soon need to rethink their stance if players begin missing IPL matches despite being fit, simply as a precaution.Chopra also spoke about Lockie Ferguson, who is reportedly set to miss the start of IPL 2026 to spend time with his family.“I am thinking about Lockie Ferguson, and that’s a serious one. I don’t know whether he has an injury or not, but based on what I have read, he isn’t available for seven matches. He is saying he wants to spend some time with the family,” he said.Ferguson, who will represent Punjab Kings after being picked up for ₹2 crore, could miss a significant portion of the tournament, something Chopra believes franchises will need to take seriously.“He was available at the base price. He was bought for ₹2 crore. He is playing for New Zealand. Then he will go home and spend time with his family. It’s not a bad thing. Don’t judge anyone, but if you are leaving seven matches in the IPL after giving a commitment just because of that, then teams will have to realize that this is not right,” Chopra observed.Chopra added that there is a growing possibility of players opting for partial participation while earning pro-rata payments, though he clarified he was not accusing anyone of doing so deliberately.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood to miss early IPL 2026; Nathan Ellis injured

Australia’s big three, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, will miss the early stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, with young pacer Josh Ellis also sidelined completely from the tournament due to injury.

The development was confirmed by cricket.com.au on Friday (March 20, 2026).

However, it is understood none of Australia’s ace speedsters, Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood will be available for their franchises when the IPL 2026 kickoff on March 28.

Cricket Australia (CA) is taking a precautionary approach with their veteran pacers as they are set to have a lengthy 12-month period, where they will play up to 21 matches, including crucial tours of South Africa, India and England, before defending their ODI World Cup crown in southern Africa in late 2027, the statement said.

The trio’s availability will depend on progress in their return to play protocols over the next few weeks.

Test captain Cummins played one Test match against England during the Ashes series last year due to a back stress injury, while Hazlewood was ruled out of the entire Ashes series due to hamstring and Achilles issues. The veteran pacers also missed the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Starc, on the other hand, played all five Ashes Tests and also featured in the Big Bash League. However, the left-arm pacer missed the T20 World Cup, having retired from T20Is late last year.Nathan Ellis has suffered a recurrence of the right hamstring injury he suffered in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.

The 31-year-old recovered to feature in all four of Australia’s group-stage games, but Cricket Tasmania has confirmed he reaggravated his hamstring during last week’s One-Day Cup final in Hobart.

Cummins is the skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad, whereas Mitchell Starc is with Delhi Capitals, and five-time champions Chennai Super Kings bought Nathan Ellis for the Indian Premier League 2026 season. In place of Cummins, the Hyderabad-based franchise has confirmed that India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan will be the stand-in skipper for the 2026 season.

Australia selector Tony Dodemaide had said that Cummins and Hazlewood’s availability for the IPL purely was a “timing issue”.

“If it was in reverse, the IPL was first and the World Cup was second, then they’d be missing the IPL to play in the World Cup,” said Dodemaide.

“It’s not going to be frustrating for us at all. We know their commitment to want to play and succeed for Australia.”

Jack Edwards ruled out due to foot injury

Australia all-rounder Jack Edwards has also been ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 due to a foot injury, according to ESPNcricinfo on Friday.

The 25-year-old Edwards was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for ₹3 crore during the IPL auction. The Australian all-rounder was the only uncapped overseas player to be signed up at the 2025 auction.

Edwards made his T20I debut for Australia against Pakistan at Lahore in January 2026. The all-rounder has played just one match till now, scoring five runs.

In T20s, the 25-year-old has played 77 matches and 57 innings, scoring 853 runs and picking up 52 wickets.

Edwards had a strong Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 edition. He picked up 19 wickets and scored 133 runs in 13 matches for the Sydney Sixers. He has played two Sheffield Shield games for New South Wales, his state team, since then, the last of those fixtures getting over only on Thursday.

Edward’s absence is an additional blow for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who will be without their regular skipper Pat Cummins for the start of the IPL 2026 as he continues to recover from lumbar stress injury. The Hyderabad-based franchise has named India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan as the stand-in skipper.

Edwards’ injury is an extension of the list of injuries to Australian fast bowlers. Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Ellis, apart from Cummins, are also missing the IPL either partially or completely owing to injuries.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have announced the schedule of the first phase of IPL 2026 edition. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the tournament opener on March 28.

The Hyderabad-based franchise will then face three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders on April 2, followed by their matches against Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings on April 5 and April 11, respectively.

The Women’s Premier League has quickly established itself as a landmark tournament in women’s cricket, delivering high-quality competition, packed stadiums and memorable finals since its inception in 2023. In just four editions, the league has already produced a clear pattern of dominance, heartbreak and recurring rivalries.Mumbai Indians were the inaugural champions in 2023, setting the benchmark in the league’s first season. Led by a balanced squad and strong leadership, MI defeated Delhi Capitals in the final, beginning a trend that would see DC repeatedly fall short on the biggest stage.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, inspired by captain Smriti Mandhana, lifted their second WPL title with a commanding six-wicket win over Delhi Capitals in the final.
