A cat left outside tried to get back indoors. Once a family welcomed him in, he was determined to win them over.

About two months ago, Little Wanderers NYC, an all-volunteer rescue, received a request for help about a cat who had been left to fend for himself on the streets.

A concerned neighbor reported hearing him cry night after night and watching him attempt to climb a brick wall, trying to get inside. He eagerly accepted affection from strangers, making it clear that he didn’t belong outdoors.

“Friendly cats on the street don’t have the skills to survive,” Little Wanderers NYC shared.

Volunteers sprang into action, determined to change the fate of this abandoned cat. While rescue efforts were underway, the team put out an urgent call for a foster family who could offer him a safe, warm place to stay while he waited for a forever home.

One volunteer saw the post and responded immediately. “I knew I could make his life better, so I decided to foster.”

In less than ten hours, the cat, named Emmanuel, was brought to safety thanks to the tireless efforts of many volunteers. “Thousands of cats have been helped over the years, and Emmanuel is one of them,” the rescue said.

“He is super friendly and was so grateful to be rescued.”

Once Emmanuel realized he was no longer outside, he stepped out of his carrier and went straight to his people, rubbing against them as if to say thank you. After months of pleading to be let back indoors, his wish had finally come true.

He explored his new surroundings, then curled up beside his human and purred, making himself right at home.

As the foster family spent more time caring for him and taking him to vet appointments, they realized they were in this together.

Emmanuel followed them from room to room, supervising their work in the office and offering a “helping paw” during chores. He became the perfect companion, always nearby and always ready to jump in whenever someone needed a cuddle.

“His melodic meows melted my heart, his calm demeanor brought peace, and he got along beautifully with my other cats,” the foster family shared. That’s when it hit them: they couldn’t let him go. Emmanuel was already home.

He claimed his favorite spot by the window, watching birds and small critters from the comfort and safety of his home.

After everything he’d endured, Emmanuel finally found stability and endless love. “I wanted to give him that, not just temporarily, but for the rest of his life.”

He no longer cries at night, trying to climb into someone’s apartment, or faces another day without food. He has full bowls, cozy beds, and people who adore him deeply.

What began as a foster placement turned into a forever home. Emmanuel now lives happily with his family, far from the cold, unforgiving streets he once knew.

“I may not be able to save every cat in the world, but I can change one cat’s world, and I’m so glad I changed Emmanuel’s. Fostering saves lives, but adopting? That’s even better.”

An orange cat dad helped care for kittens after leaving the street life. His wish came true with two kittens by his side.

After wandering the streets for some time, an orange cat named Harry was finally rescued, alongside a heavily pregnant calico named Reba.

Amber, an experienced foster volunteer with Tails of the Forgotten Paws, prepared a quiet, cozy space for the pair. While Reba was shy and reserved, Harry quickly warmed up to Amber, greeting her with loud purrs and affectionate snuggles.

Once cleaned up and fed, Harry kneaded his blanket with joy and filled the room with his contented purrs.

Harry was likely once someone’s pet, but somehow ended up unwanted and left behind. Given a second chance, he regained his trust in people and touched everyone he met with his gentle, loving nature.

A few days later, Reba welcomed five healthy kittens into the world: two calicos, two gingers, and one white with tabby markings. She immediately embraced motherhood, feeding, cleaning, and showering her babies with love.

While nestled close to their mom, the bolder kittens turned into tiny lion cubs, hissing their fiercest little hisses at unfamiliar scents. Harry, believed to be the kittens’ father, was soon neutered. He respectfully gave Reba the space she needed while quietly keeping her company.

When the kittens were upgraded to a larger playpen, they began waddling around. During one of Reba’s breaks, Patsy, one of the calicos, made a beeline for Harry and curled up beside him.

Within weeks, the kittens’ eyes were wide open, and their curiosity soared.

As soon as they found their footing, they toddled around the nest, setting off on tiny adventures. Fully convinced they were sprinting at top speed, the kittens crept across the room in slow motion.

As the kittens grew more playful and independent, Reba started taking more time for herself. But the moment she heard their cries, she chirped back, prompting them to gather around her for another round of nursing.

No longer timid or wanting to hide, Reba began seeking affection, leaning into chin scratches and happily accepting pets from ears to tail.

The kittens blossomed into confident, mischievous youngsters. Their boundless energy and playful antics awakened the inner kitten in Harry. He happily joined in their games, shared toys, and watched the little ones fall asleep mid-play.

While Reba enjoys some well-earned me-time, Harry doesn’t mind the kittens climbing all over him for attention. They race around the room, keeping him fully entertained.

Kenny is Harry’s little mini-me and greets him with gentle paws. She’s always nearby, ready to play and soak up his affection.

When adoption time arrived, three of the kittens (Patsy, Hank, and Lainey) quickly found their forever families. An adopter named Julie came to meet Harry when she learned that his two other kittens (Kenny and Merle) were still waiting for a home.

“I couldn’t believe it when Julie told me she wanted to adopt all three,” Amber shared. “I don’t dance and have never done a happy dance in my life, but I did yesterday.”

As Harry and all the kittens prepare for their forever homes, Reba can finally focus on herself. “This will give her a chance to shine all on her own. She’s a beautiful, quiet girl who will flourish given some one-on-one time. Then we can find Reba her fabulous forever home as well.”

Harry is thriving with his little ones racing around him, and there’s never a dull moment. He’s been an incredible dad and a loyal companion, and now he’ll get to spend the rest of his life with his daughter and son.

A cat got a fresh start after spending many years on the streets, and his glow-up is nothing short of incredible.

Ralphie, a gray cat, was 10 years old when he was brought to Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission, hoping for a better life.

Rough around the edges, he had likely spent most of his years on the streets. By the time he arrived at the shelter, it was clear he needed urgent care and a foster home where he could finally heal.

When rescuers at Thrifted Kittens Animal Rescue noticed him, they immediately offered to take him in.

“This sweet 10-year-old boy was brought in as a stray and has a myriad of health concerns,” the rescue shared. Ralphie was born with a congenital abnormality that caused a malformation of his mouth, and years of harsh outdoor living left it inflamed.

“Despite everything he’s facing, he’s the sweetest, purriest boy who just wants love.”

With the support of the community, the rescue was able to pull Ralphie from the shelter and place him into foster care just in time for Christmas. “This senior boy gets to spend the holidays in a warm, safe, loving foster home where he’ll be doted on.”

Once inside a home, Ralphie blossomed. He eagerly sought affection, leaning into comfort as if trying to make up for lost time.

“He has the best personality, and we couldn’t be happier that he is in our care,” shared Haley, rescue coordinator at Thrifted Kittens Animal Rescue.

Ralphie rose onto his hind legs and put his paws on Haley, rubbing his face against her for attention. Before long, he climbed onto her shoulders, thrilled to be carried around.

As if he understood he was getting the help he needed, Ralphie faced every treatment like a champ. He seemed grateful for his meals, cozy beds, and all the love he received. With proper care, he began to heal, and his hearty appetite returned in full force.

“He has gained weight, and most of it seems to have gone to his cheeks.”

With improved health came a renewed zest for life. Ralphie rediscovered his playful, adventurous side, batting at toys and following his humans from room to room. He was always ready for a cuddle or a snack.

When he discovered the shoe rack, he promptly appointed himself the official shoe watcher and door greeter, welcoming everyone home with soft, chirpy meows.

After a few weeks in foster care, Ralphie’s mouth fully healed, and his transformation was remarkable. He zipped around the house with energy to spare and maintained a strong appetite for both food and affection. “He is a sweet boy who has had quite the ‘He’s All That’ makeover.”

He found a new vantage point on top of the kitchen cabinets, where he could comfortably supervise his people and survey his kingdom.

Ralphie is the perfect companion, affectionate and playful. He showers his people with purrs and snuggles, approaches each day with curiosity, and makes sure not a single crumb is left behind at mealtime.

Cat Town: How did you pick your first cat? How did you know they were the right one for you?

Kareem: He chose me. I went to a shelter in Florida thinking I was going to pick out a female cat, sat down on the floor, crossed my legs, and this orange cat just walked up to me. He meowed, jumped in my lap, and just looked at me. I adopted him and named him Cloud.

When I first got him home, I worried that it wouldn’t work out. I wasn’t used to having a cat, so I actually took him back to the shelter. Looking back, he was just acting like a cat. Then I started dreaming about him. So I went back and brought him back. From that point on, he was the best cat I ever had. Everyone who met him loved him too.

Cat Town: What made Cloud so special as your first ever cat?

Kareem: He always wanted my attention, but Cloud would put on this show for people that he didn’t know, and make his eyes look big and pitiful so people would  give him treats. And then as soon as he got the treat, he would run off! But once he got to know you, he would let you touch him and play with him. Cats get a bad rep for being aloof, like they don’t get attached to people. Cloud taught me that’s not true. He had this green plush toy, and every so often he would just bring it to me. No matter where I was — on the couch, in bed, anywhere — he’d bring it to me. I later learned that’s one way cats show affection. 

I actually got him a playmate a few years later named ​Yuna. A Maryland shelter was giving her away. Nobody wanted to adopt her. The shelter was waiving fees. That really shaped how I think about older cats, because everybody wants kittens, but they don’t realize all kittens grow up to become cats. Cloud and Yuna bonded deeply. They groomed each other, ate together, slept together. If one couldn’t find the other, they would cry and call out.

We kicked off 2026 with 33 adoptions in January. Each adopted cat had different needs and timelines on their journey to their new homes. From longtime senior foster cats like Ollie and Pip, to young fearful kittens like Sprite and Fresca, each cat got the space and care they needed to build confidence and be set up for success.
